ABSTRACT

This study examines if, and how, the size of the community in which people live may contribute to explaining differences in traffic safety behaviour (self-reported behaviour regarding the use of seat belts, bicycle helmets and reflectors) among young people in Sweden. The study is based on a Swedish nationwide traffic safety survey with a net sample of 2854 respondents aged 16-25. Ordered logit regressions were performed, and place of residence is shown to have an impact on traffic safety behaviour. The results are presented and discussed in relation to risk exposure and traffic safety facilities in different settings. The implications of the study are considered, and the importance of investigating the way in which young people see traffic safety behaviour is emphasised.

ABSTRACT

The efficient commercial production of Arctic charr is hampered by the limited and subtle sexual dimorphism shown by this species. This project examined the feasibility of low-cost videoendoscopy through the genital pore to determine sex, stage of maturity, and safety for 80, randomly selected, anesthetized Arctic charr. The sensitivity and specificity for correct assignment of male sex were 90% and 100%, respectively, among 3 observers in a single-blind design. Sensitivity and specificity for relative sexual maturity in the same fish were 96% and 54%, respectively. The observed mortality rate of 7% at the end of 3 weeks was confounded by the presence of unrelated disease. We conclude that the technique holds promise for application by producers to improve production efficiency.

ABSTRACT

Surgery equipment was modified for ovine surgery. Pre- and postoperative holding pens were designed to meet the specific requirements of sheep. A hydraulic trolley lift was constructed and operating tables fitted with spilltrays. A gag was made to protect Magill tubing and the indifferent electrode was altered for electrosurgery. For fluoroscopy a flexible table was constructed to accommodate sheep.

ABSTRACT

The significance of chronic exposure to anesthetic pollution for veterinarians and their associates is not well defined, but one cannot ignore the evidence that a potential occupational health hazard exists. Installation of a scavenging system can reduce anesthetic pollution and personnel exposure to waste gases significantly. However, it is important to realize that these systems are not a replacement for safe anesthetic practices and are only effective when used correctly and maintained properly.
