ABSTRACT

Therapy with water has been known for thousands of years. Hot water bath was always pleasant for people. During the 19th century it was applied for the treatment of several diseases and modern medicine should not miss it. Today balneotherapy may help gymnastic procedures and it is commonly used in combination with other types of physiotherapy, too.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Newer circulating-water systems supply more heat than forced-air, mainly because the heat capacity of water is much greater than for that of dry warm air and, in part, because they provide posterior as well as anterior heating. Several heating systems are available, but three major ones have yet to be compared directly. We therefore compared two circulating-water systems with a forced-air system during simulation of upper abdominal or chest surgery in volunteers. METHODS: Seven healthy volunteers participated on three separate study days. Each day, they were anesthetized and cooled to a core temperature near 34 degrees C, which was maintained for 45-60 min. They were then rewarmed with one of three warming systems until distal esophageal core temperature reached 36 degrees C or anesthesia had lasted 8 h. The warming systems were 1) energy transfer pads (two split torso pads and two universal pads; Kimberly Clark, Roswell, GA); 2) circulating-water garment (Allon MTRE 3365 for cardiac surgery, Akiva, Israel); and 3) lower body forced-air warming (Bair Hugger #525, #750 blower, Eden Prairie, MN). Data are presented as mean +/- sd; P < 0.05 was statistically significant. RESULTS: The rate of increase of core temperature from 34 degrees C to 36 degrees C was 1.2 degrees C +/- 0.2 degrees C/h with the Kimberly Clark system, 0.9 degrees C +/- 0.2 degrees C/h with the Allon system, and 0.6 degrees C +/- 0.1 degrees C/h with the Bair Hugger (P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The warming rate with the Kimberly Clark system was 25% faster than with the Allon system and twice as fast as with the Bair Hugger. Both circulating-water systems thus warmed hypothermic volunteers in significantly less time than the forced-air system.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to present a new and challenging model of treatment that combines two therapeutic interventions: hydrotherapy and Snoezelen or controlled multisensory stimulation. The combination of the two therapeutic approaches enhances the treatment effect by utilizing the unique characteristics of each approach. We believe that this combined model will further enhance each media to the benefit of the clients and create a new intervention approach. This article relates to a hydrotherapy swimming pool facility that has been established at the Williams Island Therapeutic Swimming and Recreation Center, Beit Issie Shapiro, Raanana in Israel, after acquiring many years of experience and gaining substantial knowledge both in the field of hydrotherapy and Snoezelen intervention. Beit Issie Shapiro is a non-profit community organization providing a range of services for children with developmental disabilities and their families. The organization provides direct services for nearly 6,000 children and adults each year. This article provides an overview of hydrotherapy and Snoezelen and presents a case study, which will demonstrate the new model of treatment and show how this new and innovative form of therapy can be used as a successful intervention. We believe it will open a path to enriching the repertoire of therapists helping people with special needs. This article is also addressed to researchers to provide ideas for further studies in this area.

ABSTRACT

The need to minimize the threat of infection to patients and the high incidence of health problems in hydrotherapy pool workers, have led to recommendations especially tailored to the design and operation of the water and air treatment plant of hydrotherapy pools. Hitherto unpublished surveys are detailed which confirm that pathogenic species of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pools (in which ears may be wetted) cause a high incidence of otitis externa, but rarely cause body rashes (pseudomonas folliculitis) unless there has also been prolonged skin wetting. In brominated pools contact dermatitis is common and can be distinguished clinically from pseudomonas folliculitis by the onset of a pruritic rash less than 12 hours after exposure to the pool and reactivation of the rash on re-exposure to the brominated pool.
