ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia (RO) is a rare non-hereditary dental anomaly associated with dysplasia. Its etiology remains unclear but is known to affect both the mesodermal and ectodermal dental components, as well as deciduous and permanent dentitions. Its young age of onset and complexity has great physical and psychological impact on the affected patients. However, the clinical management of RO remains unified without standardized treatment guidelines. Thus, this study aimed to report an RO case, the first from Jiangxi Province, China, and discuss its clinical diagnosis and treatment to provide a reference to treat similar cases more effectively in the future.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to report the main clinical aspects, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) findings, and conservative oral rehabilitation in a child born from a consanguineous marriage who presented with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) and generalized odontodysplasia. A 5-year-old girl presented with a diagnosis of HSS for oral evaluation. Radiographically, all teeth showed wide pulp chambers and roots with thin dentinal walls and open apices, resembling ghost teeth and indicating a diagnosis of odontodysplasia. Oral rehabilitation consisted of partial dentures that were regularly adjusted to conform the device with the pattern of growth and development of the child. CBCT scan provided great insight into HSS, allowing a detailed view of the morphologic aspects and associated trabecular bone pattern. Treatment of these 2 rare conditions in young children must consider the stage of growth and development. Although extremely rare in HSS, odontodysplasia should be investigated and conservatively managed in young children.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare and unique dental anomaly involving both dentitions, but mostly the teeth of 1 quadrant. This report describes the combined surgical and orthodontic treatment of a boy with regional odontodysplasia. The mandibular right central and lateral incisors and the canine (as well as the deciduous predecessors) were affected. In a 2-step procedure, the maxillary right and left second premolars were autotransplanted to the affected area. The extraction sites in the maxilla were closed, and a good functional occlusion was established.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia is an unusual nonhereditary dental anomaly of uncertain origin. It presents clinically as delayed or failed eruption, abscess formation, early exfoliation, and malformed teeth and radiographically as defective enamel and dentin formation, giving the teeth a fuzzy silhouette. Because teeth are essential for psychological and functional development of the child, appreciation and management of regional odontodysplasia is important for comprehensive dental care. The purpose of this paper was to present the case of a 12-year-old female who presented with an eruption disturbance affecting a single segment of her jaw and characteristic ghost teeth radiographic appearance. The approach toward management should be aimed at preserving the unerupted affected teeth for the development of the alveolar ridge, conserving the erupted teeth (if salvageable) or extraction followed by prosthetic rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia (RO) is an uncommon, nonhereditary, odontogenic developmental disturbance characterized by hypoplasia and hypocalcification of the dental tissues that produce so-called "ghost teeth." This report describes a case of a 2.5-year-old girl who came to the clinic with RO affecting her right maxillary arch. The distinguishing characteristics of this case were the involvement of both the primary and permanent dentitions and the early occurrence of odontogenic abscesses that required the patient's hospitalization. Ultrastructural analysis revealed dental tissue failures that compromised the integrity of the involved teeth, justifying the high susceptibility to caries that was clinically observed. Follow-up was characterized by periodic prosthetic adjustments to maintain the patient's ability to masticate and for social interaction, beyond allowing normal development of her maxillofacial complex. Patients with RO require individualized treatment planning and close follow-up with a multidisciplinary approach.

ABSTRACT

Oculodentodigital dysplasia is an extremely rare autosomal dominant pleiotropic disorder. The syndrome is characterized by abnormal facial features, central nervous system involvement, syndactyly and clinodactyly of fourth and fifth fingers, dry and lusterless hair, generalized enamel hypoplasia and odontodysplasia. Combination of odontodysplasia, poor oral hygiene, and parental neglect can lead to extensive destruction of tooth structure and the treatment options become limited. Early diagnosis with a proper treatment plan and meticulous oral hygiene program helps eliminate the necessity of multiple tooth extractions. This case report describes the comprehensive dental treatment aimed at rehabilitation of function and aesthetics of the dentition in an 8-year-old boy with oculodentodigital dysplasia.

ABSTRACT

In a 3-year-old child, acute dental abscesses in combination with clinical and radiographic impressions of a number of deciduous teeth indicated regional odontodysplasia as probable diagnosis. Histological examination of the removed deciduous teeth confirmed the diagnosis. Early determination of this regional developmental anomaly in the odontogenesis is of great importance for optimal guidance of the dental care of a patient with regional odontodysplasia.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare developmental anomaly of the teeth that affects enamel and dentin. Its etiology is unknown, but the most accepted theory refers to circulatory disorders associated with vascular nevi. An uncommon case of regional odontodysplasia involving three quadrants of the jaws is reported. An 8-year-old boy was referred to the authors' institution with lack of teeth as a major symptom. There was no hereditary anomaly in the family. Extraoral examination revealed a brown discoloration on the skin on the right side of the face, neck, and chest. Detailed intraoral examination showed hypoplastic and carious teeth. Fistulae and gingival overgrowth were also observed. Radiographically, the affected teeth presented the pathognomonic image of "ghost teeth." Conservative treatment was instituted.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia, or "ghost teeth," is a dental abnormality derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth bud. Teeth within a particular quadrant are affected. Affected teeth usually have thin enamel and dentin of poor quality with shortened roots, open apices, or enlarged pulp chambers. The permanent teeth and maxillary arch are observed to be more severely affected than primary teeth and the mandibular arch (ratio=1.6:1), respectively. Eruption of the affected teeth is delayed or may not happen. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown. Since this problem affects both dentitions and can involve multiple care disciplines, patients often require oral care over a long period of time. The purpose of this report was to present the management of a case from initial presentation at the age of 20 months to a final prosthesis completion at the age of 22 years. The long-term treatment may involve a pediatric dentist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, and prosthodontist.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia is an uncommon developmental anomaly affecting a localized area of the dentition. The affected teeth are often grossly malformed and develop abscess soon after eruption. Although extractions are often required, in some milder cases the teeth may be retained for a long period. The treatment plan should be based on the degree of involvement as well as functional and esthetic needs in each case. This article describes a conservative treatment approach in a 10-year-old boy with regional odontodysplasia.

ABSTRACT

Regional odontodysplasia (ROD) is a rare, localized developmental anomaly of the dental tissues with distinctive clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings. The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics and clinical management of 2 patients diagnosed with ROD at the Pediatric Dentistry Service at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona, Spain. In both cases, temporary and permanent dentition were involved. It was concluded that therapeutic decisions during childhood must be based on the degree of involvement and each case's functional and aesthetic needs. Autotransplantation may be a good partial treatment option during the period of mixed dentition in some cases. Definitive treatment will include prosthetic rehabilitation with implants once the patient reaches adulthood.

ABSTRACT

Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia has only recently been delineated from other osseo-odontogenic dysplasias. Yet, this seldom-reported developmental abnormality might be diagnosed by a unique combination of clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings. Unilateral maxillary hyperplasia combined with displaced molars and unusual bone trabeculation is quite obvious at an early age. Recognition and subsequent reporting by dental specialists is encouraged to more clearly define the natural progression and the appropriate treatment of this abnormality.

ABSTRACT

A case of regional odontodysplasia in a 13 year old female is reported. The restorative options in this case are considered along with the rational for providing a dentine bonded all-porcelain bridge. This approach restored both function and aesthetics with minimum destruction to the hypoplastic tooth tissue of the abutment.
