ABSTRACT

The winter solstice marks the astronomical moment when the sun is aligned over the Tropic of Capricorn. On December 21, those who live in the Northern Hemisphere had the shortest day and longest night of the year. This was accompanied in 2020 by a rare alignment of Jupiter and Saturn, which appeared as a singular bright point of light in the night sky for the first time since the Middle Ages. Although many cultures celebrate the winter solstice, the solstice is mostly overlooked in the United States, largely because of the multitude of other holidays around this time of the year. However, the shortest day and longest night seems like a metaphor of sorts for a year like no other in the memory of most-a fitting end and a pause. From the stillness, we can reflect in the space between the past and the future, reviewing the year behind us while appreciating the challenges to be faced in 2021.

ABSTRACT

This past summer, while attending a genetics conference in Bar Harbor, Maine, I was informed that I would be the incoming editor of the Oncology Nursing Forum (ONF). Since then, I have tried to coalesce my thoughts to write my first editorial. Bar Harbor in July is as idyllic a setting for musings as one could hope for. Even so, I was finding it difficult to express my gratitude for this opportunity to provide stewardship to ONF, one of the premier journals in the field of oncology nursing and an important part of the history of the Oncology Nursing Society.

ABSTRACT

The life and careers of Cecile, Marthe and Marguerite Vogt are chronicled in this article during an era where women were not readily accepted in the upper echelons of academia. By exploring important questions, these women made major contributions to the broad base of scientific knowledge which impacted the fields of neurobiology in both the central and peripheral nervous systems, infectious disease, and oncogenesis. As a result, each was considered the elite of her respective field and achieved an enduring legacy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to describe the strategies of nurses in the National Institute of Cancer to disseminate its scientific capital and discuss the symbolic effects capitalized in the field of oncology in the 1980s. METHOD: historical social studies, with primary sources consisting of written documents and oral reports, and as secondary sources, articles and books on the subject, based on the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of scientific capital and habitus. RESULTS: it revealed the effective performance of nurses in this Institute on policies of cancer prevention and control and strategies used in the teaching of oncology nursing at the undergraduate level. In conclusion, nursing stands out in this context, through the dissemination of its scientific knowledge, as a participant in the construction of a scientific field of oncology nursing in Brazil, highlighting the occupation of important social areas.

ABSTRACT

Cancer is a devastating diagnosis for anyone, but none more so than for children and their parents--so many questions to be asked, so much information to sift through and absorb, and so many difficult decisions to be made. It is no wonder that a diagnosis of childhood cancer is often met with fear, anger, guilt, and feelings of being overwhelmed, yet also a determined resilience on the part of families to do whatever it takes to help their child get well again (Rishel, 2010).

ABSTRACT

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) has been a priority symptom in the management of patients with cancer since the inception of chemotherapy. In the mid-1970s, the most effective agents available were the standard antiemetics used for gastrointestinal illnesses, postoperative nausea, and morning sickness. The Oncology Nursing Forum has documented the study of this symptomcauses, pathophysiology, and manifestationsin the past four decades as well as emerging treatment therapies. To date, CINV is fairly well controlled, but work still needs to be done, particularly in delayed and refractory management.
