ABSTRACT

The Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was born as a radiology journal, and over its century of existence it has gone through various names and owners while shifting its contents from radiology to physical medicine to physical medicine and rehabilitation. These developments are sketched in light of the growth and eventual merger of physical medicine and rehabilitation in the United States and societal historical developments in the United States and elsewhere.

Following a section on the initial beginnings of the department, the current status of the department offering comprehensive rehabilitation by the multidisciplinary team is highlighted. The article ends with the challenges faced, including limitations in providing affordable solutions, architectural and attitudinal barriers, and inadequate number of rehabilitation physicians and comprehensive rehabilitation centers in the country.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to show the conformation of a dispositive of disability during the Late-Francoist Spain. In order to do so, we will first introduce the theoretical and methodological framework of the proposal. Secondly, we will analyse both the discourses and the dynamics of the disability dispositive by studying three main areas: the economic field, the social and medical area and the pedagogical practices. The main objective of this particular analysis is to become a tool that will allow us to expose the specificities of the dispositive of disability during the proposed time frame, always in connection with the Spanish previous scenario and with contemporary international dynamics. The article will conclude with a series of final considerations that will serve as an interpretative framework for further approaches to more specific case studies

ABSTRACT

John C. Carapanayiotis was specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation in the USA in 1948, at a time when the medical world in post-war Greece was ignorant of this specific medical specialty, and the political, economic and social backdrop was incapable of accepting and understanding the wealth of scientific knowledge that he was trying to introduce. At this point it should be noted that the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established in Greece in 1973. John C. Carapanayiotis was a member of the American Congress of Physical Medicine during the 1950's. In the same period, he expressed interest, on behalf of the New York University, in the establishment of a Physical Therapy Clinic in Greece, which would be granted unlimited funding by the Marshal Plan. His efforts clashed constantly with the backward mentality of his time, with the entrenched conservatism and with the bureaucratic red tape. Unfortunately, he was far ahead of his time and was condemned to the same fate as all other visionaries and pioneers in the way that his knowledge and scientific background were not put into practice for decades to come.

ABSTRACT

The field of physical medicine and rehabilitation in Israel was developed in different ways. Some services were developed as a part of comprehensive rehabilitation centers like the Loewenstein Hospital and others were developed as a part of specific disciplines, like the Polio-Rehabilitation Center at Assaf Harofeh hospital. Moreover, the various fields of rehabilitation medicine were developed at different rates. The origin of each stemmed from different circumstances. Sometimes they were developed with a direct connection to a national event and sometimes separately. Occasionally, the field was developed as a result of one person's initiation and others as a result of the establishment's recognition of the value and the essentiality of the field. This essay will focus, in a chronological manner, on the development of the medical rehabilitation fields, that took place in the two leading rehabilitation centers in Israel, the Loewenstein Hospital and at Tel Hashomer. These rehabilitation centers were established in Israel close to the establishment of the State of Israel and their activity will be discussed until 1974, the year in which the Israeli society had to deal with the results of the Yom Kippur war, which had drastic implications on rehabilitation medicine.

ABSTRACT

Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) is a basic medical specialty officially recognized in Europe since 1962. This article briefly presents the significance, attainments and tasks recently undertaken by the leading structures responsible for international harmonization and management of the specialty within healthcare systems in Europe and for scientific development: the Section and Board of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS-PRM), European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (AEMR) and European Society of PRM (ESPRM). The concept of rehabilitation according to the biopsychosocial model of functioning recently promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) closely follows the assumptions of the Polish Model of Rehabilitation, formulated in the 1960's and approved by the WHO in 1970. Since its accession to the European Union in 2004, Poland has been gradually increasing active participation in the European structures of PRM.
