ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Postoperative shivering (POS) is a common and vital complication after anesthesia, which may result in serious consequences and uncomfortable experiences. Acetaminophen has been used to treat fever and mild to moderate pain. However, there is not enough evidence to prove its advantage for POS. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the prophylactic use of acetaminophen as a valid agent for POS. METHODS: Two researchers independently searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase for controlled clinical trials. The meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed by Review Manager. RESULTS: Nine trials with 856 patients were included in our meta-analysis. Acetaminophen significantly reduced POS compared with placebo (pooled risk ratio [RR]: 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.35-0.52). What is more, not only 15 mg/kg but also 1000 mg intravenous acetaminophen could reduce the incidence of shivering compared with placebo. CONCLUSION: Our present meta-analysis demonstrates that the intravenous prophylactic infusion of acetaminophen may prevent POS, and the results may provide new evidence to expand the clinical value of acetaminophen in addition to its routine usage.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral vasodilation causes a redistribution of body temperature from the core to the periphery, resulting in shivering and hypothermia. These are normal pathological and physiological processes during spinal anaesthesia. Two drugs, norepinephrine and phenylephrine, have peripheral vasoconstrictive effects. It is unclear the effects of norepinephrine and phenylephrine on shivering and hypothermia in patients undergoing caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia. METHODS ANALYSIS: 240 eligible parturients will be recruited for this randomised, double-blind, controlled trial and randomly assigned to either the norepinephrine or phenylephrine groups. The primary outcome will be the incidence of shivering while secondary outcomes will include the severity of shivering, rectal temperature, incidence of hypothermia and umbilical artery blood pH value. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The Institutional Ethics Committee of The Second People's Hospital of Hefei approved the trial protocol (ID: 2023-093). The results will be published in a compliant journal. The original data will be released in December 2029 on the ResMan original data-sharing platform of the China Clinical Trial Registry (http://www.medresman.org.cn). ABSTRACT

Purpose: Shivering occurs frequently after caesarean delivery. The present study aimed to investigate the ED50 and ED95 of an intravenous (i.v.) bolus of dexmedetomidine for treating severe shivering after caesarean delivery under combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia. Patients and methods: Seventy-five parturients with severe shivering after caesarean delivery were randomized into one of the five groups to receive an i.v. bolus of 0.2 (Group D1), 0.25 (Group D2), 0.3 (Group D3), 0.35 (Group D4) or 0.4 (Group D5) µg/kg of dexmedetomidine. Effectiveness of shivering treatment was defined as a standardized shivering score decreasing to ≤1 within 10 min of dexmedetomidine injection. The ED50 and ED95 were determined by probit regression. Adverse effects were also compared among the groups. Results: The ED50 and ED95 of i.v. dexmedetomidine to treat severe shivering were 0.23 (95% CI, 0.16-0.26) µg/kg and 0.39 (95% CI, 0.34-0.52) µg/kg, respectively. No difference in the incidence of adverse effects was found between groups. Conclusion: An i.v. bolus of 0.39 µg/kg of dexmedetomidine will treat 95% of parturients experiencing severe shivering after caesarean delivery.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the impact of intraoperative hypothermia on the recovery period of anesthesia in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 384 elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in a grade A tertiary hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province from October 2021 and October 2022. After anesthesia induction, inflatable warming blankets were routinely used for active heat preservation, and nasopharyngeal temperature was monitored to observe the occurrence of intraoperative hypothermia. Patients were divided into hypothermia group and nonhypothermia group according to whether hypothermia occurred during the operation. Anesthesia recovery time and the incidence of adverse events or unwanted events during anesthesia recovery between the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The numbers (percentage) of 384 patients who underwent abdominal surgery developed intraoperative hypothermia occurred in 240 (62.5%) patients, all of whom had mild hypothermia. There were statistically significant differences between mild hypothermia after active warming and nonhypothermia in the occurrence of shivering (χ2 = 5.197, P = 0.023) and anesthesia recovery time (Z = -2.269, P = 0.02) in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery during anesthesia recovery, and there were no statistically significant differences in hypoxemia, nausea or vomiting, hypertension, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, analgesic drug use,postoperative wound infection or postoperative hospitalization days. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of intraoperative mild hypothermia after active warming was high in elderly patients who underwent abdominal surgery. Mild hypothermia increased the incidence of shivering and prolonged anesthesia recovery time in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a proper treatment for cholecystitis but the Carbon dioxide gas which is used in surgery stimulates the sympathetic system and causes hemodynamic changes and postoperative shivering in patients undergoing operations. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of clonidine on reducing hemodynamic changes during tracheal intubation and Carbon dioxide gas insufflation and postoperative shivering in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective, randomized, triple-blind clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients between the 18-70 years-old age group, who were candidates of laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery. The patients randomized into two groups (30 patients received 150 µg oral clonidine) and 30 patients received 100 mg oral Vitamin C). Heart rate and mean arterial pressure of patients were recorded before anesthesia, before and after laryngoscopy, before and after Carbon dioxide gas insufflation. Data were analyzed using Chi-2, student t-test, and analysis of variance by repeated measure considering at a significant level less than 0.05. RESULTS: The findings of this study showed that both heart rate and mean arterial pressure in clonidine group after tracheal intubation and Carbon dioxide gas insufflation were lower than patients in the placebo group, but there was not any statistically significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05) and also postoperative shivering was not different in groups. There was no significant statistical difference in postoperative shivering between the two groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Using 150 µg oral clonidine as a cheap and affordable premedication in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy improves hemodynamic stability during operation.

BACKGROUND: Recently, use of HT35 receptor antagonists to prevent postoperative shivering has attracted a great deal of attention. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of granisetron as an HT35 antagonist when compared with ondansetron and meperidine in preventing postoperative shivering. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this triple blind random clinical trial study, 90 patients 18-50 years of age with ASA Class I and II undergoing general anesthesia were randomly assigned into one of the three drug groups: O (4-mg ondansetron), G (40 µg/kg of granisetron), and P (25 mg meperidine), immediately before induction of anesthesia. After anesthesia induction, at the end of the surgery, after the entrance and after leaving the recovery state, central temperature, peripheral temperature, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and shivering were measured and documented. Two-tailed P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: In the meperidine, ondansetron, and granisetron groups, 4 (13.3%), 3 (10%), and 10 (33.3%) of patients experienced shivering during recovery, where the difference between the ondansetron and granisetron groups was significant (p-value=0.02). The variations in the mean arterial pressure during the investigation stages only in the ondansetron group were not significant (p>0.05). At the beginning of recovery, the reduction of peripheral temperature significantly was lower in the ondansetron group (p<0.05), while reduction of the central temperature was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the granisetron group. By the end of the recovery, the variations in the peripheral temperature across the three groups were consistent with the changes at the beginning of recovery, but variations of the central temperature across the three groups was not significantly diverse. CONCLUSION: Granisetron was not found to be much effective in preventing postoperative shivering. Ondansetron and meperidine were equally effective in preventing postoperative shivering. Ondansetron also causes less hemodynamic changes compared to other drugs, while granisetron is more effective in terms of preventing nausea and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: Shivering occurs more frequently for women having caesarean section under neuraxial anaesthesia compared to other patient groups and causes an increase in pain and interrupts bonding with her newborn. AIM: This study aimed to report the evidence on non-pharmacological methods to treat shivering, defined as uncontrollable shaking, because of being cold, frightened, or excited, post neuraxial anaesthesia; the use of local anaesthesia inserted around the nerves of the central nervous system such as spinal anaesthesia and epidural in women having a caesarean section. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using six electronic health databases that were searched with no restrictions placed on language, date, or study type. FINDINGS: Of the 1399 studies identified, following screenings only one study was deemed suitable for inclusion. The study, a randomised controlled trial, compared forced air warming blankets (intervention) with the usual care of warmed cotton blankets (control) and its impact on maternal and newborn outcomes. The only statistically significant difference found was the perceived thermal comfort of the mother. DISCUSSION: Non-pharmacological treatments for shivering are underrepresented in the literature; only one study identified where the impact of active warming was compared to warmed cotton blankets (usual care) for the measures of: oral temperature; degree of shivering; and thermal comfort pain scores. There was a decline in temperature in both groups at odds with some women reporting feeling too warm such that they asked for the active warmer to be turned down. CONCLUSION: Social engagement strategies are interventions that send a signal of safety to the nervous system leading to a sense of calm and wellbeing and have biological plausibility and warrant evaluation. Recommendations for further research: design a robust study to test the effectiveness of social engagement strategies on shivering for women having caesarean section under neuraxial anaesthesia.

ABSTRACT

The mammalian brain controls heat generation and heat loss mechanisms that regulate body temperature and energy metabolism. Thermoeffectors include brown adipose tissue, cutaneous blood flow and skeletal muscle, and metabolic energy sources include white adipose tissue. Neural and metabolic pathways modulating the activity and functional plasticity of these mechanisms contribute not only to the optimization of function during acute challenges, such as ambient temperature changes, infection and stress, but also to longitudinal adaptations to environmental and internal changes. Exposure of humans to repeated and seasonal cold ambient conditions leads to adaptations in thermoeffectors such as habituation of cutaneous vasoconstriction and shivering. In animals that undergo hibernation and torpor, neurally regulated metabolic and thermoregulatory adaptations enable survival during periods of significant reduction in metabolic rate. In addition, changes in diet can activate accessory neural pathways that alter thermoeffector activity. This knowledge may be harnessed for therapeutic purposes, including treatments for obesity and improved means of therapeutic hypothermia.

ABSTRACT

Postoperative shivering is one of the most common complications of surgeries. The current research compared the effects of ketamine, granisetron, and dexmedetomidine on reducing postoperative shivering after general anesthesia. This double-blind clinical trial enrolled 148 patients (39.08 ± 5.99 years old) who had been admitted to Vali-Asr Hospital of Arak, Iran in 2019-2021. The study drugs, including dexmedetomidine, ketamine, granisetron and normal saline, were administered in corresponding groups 30 minutes before the end of surgery. The results showed that dexmedetomidine reduced mean arterial pressure and heart rate in patients. The lowest incidence of shivering was observed in the dexmedetomidine group and it increased the duration of recovery. Overall, dexmedetomidine is recommended to reduce postoperative shivering after general anesthesia, but the increase in duration of recovery should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Shivering is one of the most common adverse outcomes associated with the administration of spinal anaesthesia, which, when clinically relevant, leads to numerous detrimental effects on the human body. Hence, its management becomes imperative. Meperidine, an opioid analgesic, is the drug of choice for this condition. However, the use of meperidine is controversial, as it carries the devastating adverse effect of respiratory depression. We explored the role of granisetron, a 5HT3 antagonist and a commonly used antiemetic premedication, in minimising the incidence of post-spinal shivering and decreasing the use of meperidine as a rescue drug. METHODS: Overall, 160 parturient patients, between the ages 18-50, undergoing uncomplicated, elective caesarean section, were enrolled in the study, and randomized into two groups with 80 participants each: Group A received 3ml of normal saline, and Group B was administered 3 mg granisetron,15 minutes before spinal anaesthesia institution. Incidence of clinically relevant shivering (score of 3 or more) was noted, and it was recorded whether meperidine was used or not. RESULTS: 67.5% of participants in Group A, and 32.5% of patients in Group B, experienced clinically relevant shivering, with 62.5% of patients in Group A and 28.75% in Group B warranting the use of meperidine. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of incidence of clinically relevant shivering, and meperidine consumption (p-value <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Premedication with 3 mg granisetron effectively attenuates the occurrence of post-spinal shivering and, hence, lowers the requirement of meperidine as rescue medication.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain and postanesthesia shivering are the two common problems in patients undergoing surgery under spinal anesthesia (SA). The present study aimed to compare the preemptive prescription of the single dose of intravenous (IV) ketorolac versus nalbuphine on postoperative shivering and pain in patients undergoing surgery under SA. METHODS: Present study was a prospective, randomized double-blind study, conducted on patients of either gender, with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status class I or II, aged 21-60 years, posted for elective lower abdominal surgeries under SA. Patients were randomized by computer-generated random numbers into two groups of 50 patients each: group N (received 0.2 mg/kg nalbuphine IV) and group K (received 0.5 mg/kg ketorolac IV). RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative shivering was 22 % and 36 % in groups N and K respectively and the difference was statistically significant. The first request for analgesia (minutes) was later in group N (295.17 ± 54.62) than in group K (223.80 ± 15.34) and the difference was statistically significant. Increased total analgesic consumption was noted more in group K (131.34 ± 43.27) than in group N (79.23 ± 21.34), and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.0001). The incidence of side effects was comparable among both groups. CONCLUSION: Preemptive nalbuphine had less incidence of postoperative shivering, delayed first request for analgesia, and less total analgesic consumption than ketorolac in patients undergoing surgery under SA.

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on laparoscope postoperative shivering in patients undergoing general anesthesia and explore its effect mechanism.@*METHODS@#A total of 80 patients with elective laparoscopic resection of intestinal tumor under general anesthesia were randomly divided into an EA group and a tramadol group, 40 cases in each group. Thirty min prior to the end of the operation, in the EA group, EA was exerted at Neimadian and Zusanli (ST 36), with disperse-dense wave, 2 Hz/100 Hz in frequency, 1 mA in intensity, and lasting 30 min. In the tramadol group, tramadol hydrochloride injection was dropped intravenously, 1 mg/kg. The conditions of shivering, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and agitation were observed in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were observed before treatment (T0), at the moment of extubation (T1), in 3 min of extubation (T2) and 1 h after operation (T3). Using ELISA, at T0 and T3, the expression levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in plasma were detected separately. Choking and agitation were recorded during extubation.@*RESULTS@#① In the EA group, the incidence of shivering, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and agitation in the PACU was lower than that in the tramadol group (P<0.05). ②Compared with T0, HR, SBP and DBP were increased at T1 and T2 in the tramadol group (P<0.05). HR, SBP and DBP in the EA group were lower than the tramadol group at T1 and T2 (P<0.05). ③Compared with T0, the expression levels of IL-6 and 5-HT in plasma were increased at T3 in the tramadol group (P<0.05). The expression levels of IL-6 and 5-HT in the EA group were lower than the tramadol group at T3 (P<0.05). ④The incidence of choking and agitation during exudation in the EA group was lower than that in the tramadol group (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Electroacupuncture can reduce the incidence of laparoscopic postoperative shivering under general anesthesia. The potential mechanism mays related to the modulation of the expression levels of IL-6 and 5-HT caused by surgical trauma.

The recommendations in this guideline were developed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol recommends prevention of intraoperative hypothermia. However, the beneficial effect of maintaining normothermia after radical cystectomy has not been evaluated. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of fluid warming nursing in elderly patients undergoing Da Vinci robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy. METHODS: A total of 108 patients with bladder cancer scheduled to undergo DaVinci robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy were recruited and randomly divided into the control group (n=55), which received a warming blanket (43°C) during the intraoperative period and the warming group (n=53), in which all intraoperative fluids were administered via a fluid warmer (41°C). The surgical data, body temperature, coagulation function indexes, and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the warming group had significantly less intraoperative transfusion (p=0.028) and shorter hospitalization days (p<0.05). During the entire intraoperative period (from 1 to 6h), body temperature was significantly higher in the warming group than in the control group. There were significant differences in preoperative fibrinogen level, white blood cell count, total bilirubin level, intraoperative lactose level, postoperative thrombin time (TT), and platelet count between the control and warming groups. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that TT was the only significant factor, suggesting that the warming group had a lower TT than the control group. CONCLUSION: Fluid warming nursing can effectively reduce transfusion requirement and hospitalization days, maintain intraoperative normothermia, and promote postoperative coagulation function in elderly patients undergoing Da Vinci robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia below 36℃ is a common problem during arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Geriatric patients are more vulnerable to perioperative hypothermia. The present study compared postoperative hypothermia between geriatric and young adult patients receiving arthroscopic shoulder surgery. METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from a geriatric group (aged 65 or more, n = 29), and a control group (aged 19–64, n = 33) using the anesthesia records of patients who had undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The primary outcome measure was the incidence of hypothermia upon arrival in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). The secondary outcome measure was the decrease in body temperature from admission into the operating room to admission into the PACU. RESULTS: The incidence of hypothermia was 93.1% and 54.5% in the geriatric and control groups, respectively, demonstrating a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.001). Comparison between body temperature revealed a decrease of 1.5 ± 0.6℃ and 1.0 ± 0.4℃ in the geriatric and control groups, respectively, showing a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.001). The degree of hypothermia was significantly different between the groups (P = 0.027). No shivering was observed in either of the two groups, but the incidence of thermal discomfort was higher in the geriatric group than in the control group (P = 0.021). CONCLUSIONS: In geriatric patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery, both the incidence of postoperative hypothermia and the associated temperature drop are more prominent than those in young adult patients. Additional warming methods will be needed to prevent postoperative hypothermia in geriatric patients.

Abstract Introduction Shivering, a common intraoperative problem under spinal anesthesia increases the oxygen consumption considerably and is uncomfortable and distressing to the patient, anesthesiologist as well as surgeon. The present study was designed to explore the effectiveness of tramadol, clonidine and dexmedetomidine in the treatment of post spinal anesthesia shivering and to look for their adverse effects. Methods This prospective, randomized, double blinded control study was done on 90 patients who developed shivering under spinal anesthesia. They were randomly allocated into three groups with Group T receiving tramadol 1 mg.kg-1, Group C getting clonidine 1 mcg.kg-1 and Group D patients receiving dexmedetomidine 0.5 mcg.kg-1. The time taken to control shivering, recurrence rate, hemodynamic variables, sedation score and adverse effects were observed. Results Dexmedetomidine was faster in the control of shivering in 5.7 ± 0.79 minutes (min) whereas tramadol took 6.76 ± 0.93 min and clonidine was slower with 9.43 ± 0.93 min. The recurrence rate was much lower in the dexmedetomidine group with 3.3% than for clonidine (10%) and tramadol (23.3%) group. The sedation achieved with dexmedetomidine was better than clonidine and tramadol. The tramadol group had more cases of vomiting (four) and dexmedetomidine group had six cases of hypotension and two cases of bradycardia. Two of the clonidine patients encountered bradycardia and hypotension. Conclusion Dexmedetomidine is better than tramadol and clonidine in the control of shivering because of its faster onset and less recurrence rate. Though complications are encountered in the dexmedetomidine group, they are treatable.


Resumo Introdução O tremor, problema comum no período intraoperatório sob raquianestesia, aumenta consideravelmente o consumo de oxigênio, além de ser desconfortável e angustiante para o paciente, o anestesiologista e o cirurgião. O presente estudo foi concebido para explorar a eficácia de tramadol, clonidina e dexmedetomidina no tratamento de tremores pós-raquianestesia e observar seus efeitos adversos. Métodos Este estudo prospectivo, randômico, controlado e duplo-cego foi feito com 90 pacientes que desenvolveram tremores sob raquianestesia. Os pacientes foram randomicamente alocados em três grupos para receber 1 mg.kg-1 de tramadol (Grupo T), 1 mcg.kg-1 de clonidina (Grupo C) e 0,5 mcg.kg-1 de dexmedetomidina (Grupo D). O tempo necessário para controlar os tremores, a taxa de recorrência, as variáveis hemodinâmicas, os níveis de sedação e os efeitos adversos foram registrados. Resultados Dexmedetomidina foi mais rápida para controlar os tremores, com tempo de 5,7 ± 0,79 minutos (min); o tempo de tramadol foi de 6,76 ± 0,93 min; clonidina foi mais lenta, com tempo de 9,43 ± 0,93 min. A taxa de recorrência foi muito menor no grupo dexmedetomidina (3,3%) do que nos grupos clonidina (10%) e tramadol (23,3%). A sedação obtida com dexmedetomidina foi melhor do que a obtida com clonidina e tramadol. O grupo tramadol teve mais casos de vômito (quatro); o grupo dexmedetomidina teve seis casos de hipotensão e dois casos de bradicardia. Dois pacientes do grupo clonidina apresentaram bradicardia e hipotensão. Conclusão Dexmedetomidina foi melhor do que tramadol e clonidina para o controle de tremores devido ao seu início de ação mais rápido e à taxa de recorrência mais baixa. Embora complicações tenham sido observadas no grupo dexmedetomidina, elas foram tratáveis.

BACKGROUND: At least 30 minutes of pre-warming has been recommended for the prevention of redistribution hypothermia. However, it has been reported that less than 30 minutes of pre-warming is also effective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of 10 minutes of pre-warming to prevent inadvertent perioperative hypothermia. Results were compared with 30 minutes of pre-warming. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 59 patients scheduled for elective surgery less than 120 minutes under general anesthesia were divided into 2 groups: the first group was pre-warmed for 10 minutes (n = 30), the second group for 30 minutes (n = 29). The patients were pre-warmed for 10 or 30 minutes in the pre-anesthetic area using a forced-air warmer. When the patients' body temperatures decreased below 36℃, we warmed them with a forced-air warmer intraoperatively and postoperatively. Body temperatures were recorded during perioperative periods. Shivering and thermal comfort were evaluated in the pre-anesthetic area and post-anesthesia care unit. RESULTS: The incidence of intraoperative and postoperative hypothermia were not significantly different (P > 0.05). However, the temperatures were higher in the 30 minute group from the post-warming time to 90 minutes after anesthetic induction (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Ten minutes of pre-warming has the same effectiveness as 30 minutes of pre-warming for preventing inadvertent perioperative hypothermia. It is a preferable choice for the patients scheduled for surgery less than 120 minutes under general anesthesia.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to synthesize the best available evidence for active warming interventions during cesarean section. METHODS: A database search was done for randomized controlled trials utilizing active warming interventions. Maternal temperature, shivering and neonatal temperature were evaluated as outcome variables. Data were analyzed using Cochrane Review Manager software Version 5.3. RESULTS: Thirteen studies including 1306 patients were reviewed. The degree of lowering of maternal temperature decreased in the warmed fluids (MD 0.51; p=.004) and warming mattress interventions (MD 0.22; p<.001) compared with control groups. Incidence of shivering was also lower in the active warming group (OR 0.55; p=.003). There was no statistically significant difference in maternal temperature with a forced air warming intervention (MD 0.64; p=.15) or in neonatal temperature (MD 0.12; p=.26). CONCLUSION: Findings show that with warmed fluids and warming mattresses applied during cesarean sections maternal temperature decline was reduced and also the incidence of shivering declined, but no significant effect was observed for forced air warming interventions. These findings provide a basis for developing a warming guideline for women having a cesarean section and will help to improve the quality of care for cesarean section patients.
