ABSTRACT

Medial displacement calcaneal osteotomy (MDCO) is the standard procedure for flatfoot. We investigated the effect of MDCO on the foot using a finite element analysis. Foot models were created from computed tomography data of 8 patients with flat feet. MDCO was performed on each model with bone translation distance of 4, 8, and 12 mm. The morphological changes, plantar pressures, and stress percentage on the talocrural and subtalar joints were evaluated before and after surgery. Morphological evaluation showed improvement in the medial longitudinal arch. The stress percentage of plantar pressure in the medial area decreased, and the stress percentage of plantar pressure in the mid- and lateral forefoot area increased. At the talocrural joint, the medial and middle stress percentage increased, while the lateral and posterior stress percentage decreased. In the subtalar joint, the stress percentage in the middle subtalar joint increased and that in the posterior subtalar joint decreased. Within the posterior subtalar joint, the anterior and medial stress percentage increased, while the posterior and lateral stress percentage decreased. Preoperative simulation using the finite element analysis may be useful in understanding postoperative morphological changes and loading conditions to perform patient-specific surgery.

ABSTRACT

Subtalar dislocations, ankle dislocations, and total talar dislocations are high-energy injuries. As such, there may be associated osseous or soft tissue injuries that can be diagnosed with advanced imaging such as computed tomography (CT) or MRI. With closed injuries, closed reduction may require sedation or general anesthesia, flexion of the knee to release the tension of the gastrocnemius-soleus complex, distraction is applied, the deformity is accentuated, then the deformity is corrected. Open injuries are usually associated with a higher level of energy and a higher rate of infection. It is important to thoroughly irrigate and debride open dislocations both before and after reduction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The complex anatomical structure of the foot-ankle imposes challenges to accurately quantify detailed hindfoot kinematics and estimate musculoskeletal loading parameters. Most systems used to capture or estimate dynamic joint function oversimplify the anatomical structure by reducing its complexity. RESEARCH QUESTION: Can four dimensional computed tomography (4D CT) imaging in combination with an innovative foot manipulator capture in vivo hindfoot kinematics during a simulated stance phase of walking and can talocrural and subtalar articular joint mechanics be estimated based on a detailed in silico musculoskeletal foot-ankle model. METHODS: A foot manipulator imposed plantar/dorsiflexion and inversion/eversion representing a healthy stance phase of gait in 12 healthy participants while simultaneously acquiring 4D CT images. Participant-specific 3D hindfoot rotations and translations were calculated based on bone-specific anatomical coordinate systems. Articular cartilage contact area and contact pressure of the talocrural and subtalar joints were estimated using an extended foot-ankle model updated with an elastic foundation contact model upon prescribing the participant-specific rotations measured in the 4D CT measurement. RESULTS: Plantar/dorsiflexion predominantly occurred at the talocrural joint (RoM 15.9±3.9°), while inversion/eversion (RoM 5.9±3.9°) occurred mostly at the subtalar joint, with the contact area being larger at the subtalar than at the talocrural joint. Contact pressure was evenly distributed between the talocrural and subtalar joint at the beginning of the simulated stance phase but was then redistributed from the talocrural to the subtalar joint with increasing dorsiflexion. SIGNIFICANCE: In a clinical case study, the healthy participants were compared with four patients after surgically treaded intra-articular calcaneal fracture. The proposed workflow was able to detect small but meaningful differences in hindfoot kinematics and kinetics, indicative of remaining hindfoot pathomechanics that may influence the onset and progression of degenerative joint diseases.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Planovalgus foot deformity (PVFD) is common in children with neuromuscular conditions and severe deformity may require surgical correction. This study aims to assess clinical and radiological outcomes of PVFD secondary to neuromuscular disease managed by subtalar arthroeresis (SuAE), midfoot soft tissue release and talo-navicular arthrodesis (TNA). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of children with neuromuscular disease and nonreducible PVFD who underwent SuAE, midfoot soft tissue release, and TNA and with a minimum follow-up of 5 years was performed. A total of 60 patients with neuromuscular disease (108 feet) including cerebral palsy were reviewed. Mean age at surgery was 12.7 ± 4.6 years (6-17). Mean follow-up was 7 ± 2.9 years (5-10). Clinical outcomes and radiologic correction at final follow-up were compared with preoperative values. Statistical analysis was performed and significance was set at P < 0.01. RESULTS: Statistically significant radiological improvements between pre- and postoperative values were found for all angle values. At final follow-up, there was a significant improvement in VAS score (4.8 vs. 2; P < 0.01). There was also a positive trend in the improvement of walking ability. No cases of pseudoarthrosis were reported at final follow-up. Screw removal was required in 5 out of 108 feet (4.6%) and 2 feet (3.3%) had delayed medial wound healing. CONCLUSIONS: SuAE combined with TNA and midfoot soft tissue is a safe and feasible procedure that can provide good clinical and radiologic results in patients with neuromuscular disease and nonreducible PVFD; the procedure can improve foot stability, and has a limited number of complications. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The etiology of flatfoot and cavus foot is multicausal and controversial. So far, no literature reports the relationship between the sagittal morphology of subtalar joint and the alignment of foot. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the subtalar alignment would influence the configuration of foot. METHODS: From January 2017 to January 2020, we included 109 feet in the flatfoot group, 95 feet in the cavus group, and 104 feet in the control group in this retrospective comparative study. The Gissane angle and calcaneal posterior articular surface inclination angle represented the sagittal morphology of the subtalar joint. Meary's angle, calcaneal pitch angle, and talar pitch angle reflected the alignment of foot. They were measured in the weightbearing foot X-rays. The angles in different groups were compared via Mann-Whitney U test. We calculated the correlation between the sagittal alignment of subtalar joint and the alignment of foot using Spearman's correlation analysis. Interobserver and intraobserver reliability were calculated. RESULTS: The Gissane angle, calcaneal posterior articular surface inclination angle, Meary's angle, talar pitch angle, and calcaneal pitch angle were significantly different in the three groups. The Gissane angle had an excellent correlation with the Meary's angle (r = 0.850, p < 0.0001), and the talar pitch angle (r = -0.825, p < 0.0001), and a good correlation with the calcaneal pitch angle (r = 0.638, p < 0.0001). The calcaneal posterior articular surface inclination angle had an excellent correlation with the Meary's angle (r = -0.902, p < 0.001), and the talar pitch angle (r = 0.887, p < 0.0001), and a good correlation with the calcaneal pitch angle (r = -0.702, p < 0.0001). The interobserver and intraobserver reliability for all radiographic measurements was good to excellent. CONCLUSION: A subtalar joint with a larger Gissane angle and a more horizontal calcaneal posterior articular surface angle tended to have a higher foot arch and vice versa. The inspiration from this study was that the deformities of flatfoot and cavus foot may relate to the subtalar deformity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Landing from heights is a common movement for active-duty military personnel during training. And the additional load they carry while performing these tasks can affect the kinetics and ankle kinematic of the landing. Traditional motion capture techniques are limited in accurately capturing the in vivo kinematics of the talus. This study aims to investigate the effect of additional trunk load on the kinematics of the talocrural and subtalar joints during landing, using a dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS). METHODS: Fourteen healthy male participants were recruited. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on the right ankle of each participant to create three-dimensional (3D) models of the talus, tibia, and calcaneus. High-speed DFIS was used to capture the images of participants performing single-leg landing jumps from a height of 40 cm. A weighted vest was used to apply additional load, with a weight of 16 kg. Fluoroscopic images were acquired with or without additional loading condition. Kinematic data were obtained by importing the DFIS data and the 3D models in virtual environment software for 2D-3D registration. The kinematics and kinetics were compared between with or without additional loading conditions. RESULTS: During added trunk loading condition, the medial-lateral translation range of motion (ROM) at the talocrural joint significantly increased (p < 0.05). The subtalar joint showed more extension at 44-56 ms (p < 0.05) after contact. The subtalar joint was more eversion at 40-48 ms (p < 0.05) after contact under the added trunk load condition. The peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) significantly increased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: With the added trunk load, there is a significant increase in peak vGRF during landing. The medial-lateral translation ROM of the talocrural joint increases. And the kinematics of the subtalar joint are affected. The observed biomechanical changes may be associated with the high incidence of stress fractures in training with added load.

ABSTRACT

The optimal extent of arthrodesis for severe and rigid progressive collapsing foot deformity is controversial. Traditionally, triple arthrodesis has been recommended; however, good results have been reported using subtalar arthrodesis only. We compared the results of triple arthrodesis and isolated subtalar repositional arthrodesis. A total of 22 symptomatic feet were evaluated retrospectively. Isolated subtalar repositional arthrodesis was performed in 13 cases (the subtalar group) and double or triple arthrodesis in 9 cases (the triple group). Various radiographic variables for assessing flatfoot and osteoarthritic changes in ankle and tarsal joints were measured and compared between the 2 groups at 3 time points: preoperatively, 3 months postoperatively, and 4 y postoperatively. Additionally, we analyzed various factors that affect postoperative valgus talar tilt in the ankle joint, which has been associated with poor prognosis. There were no differences in preoperative demographic data and the severity of the disease between the 2 groups; both groups showed improvement in radiographic parameters postoperatively compared with preoperative results. With the numbers available, no significant differences could be detected in postoperative radiographic measurements between the 2 groups. Of all the variables analyzed, postoperative hindfoot alignment angle was associated with postoperative talar tilt development. Additionally, postoperative talar tilt was observed more in triple group than in subtalar group. In conclusion, isolated subtalar repositional arthrodesis is an effective procedure to correct advanced progressive collapsing foot deformity. In addition, Chorpart joint arthrodesis with improper position can cause valgus talar tilt in the ankle joint.

BACKGROUND: Cadaver biomechanical testing suggests that the morphology of articulating bones contributes to the stability of the joints and determines their kinematics; however, there are no studies examining the correlation between bone morphology and kinematics of the subtalar joint. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of talar and calcaneal morphology on subtalar kinematics during walking in healthy individuals. METHODS: Forty ankles (20 healthy subjects, 10 women/10 men) were included. Participants walked at a self-selected pace while synchronized biplane radiographs of the hindfoot were acquired at 100 images per second during stance. Motion of the talus and calcaneus was tracked using a validated volumetric model-based tracking process, and subtalar kinematics were calculated. Talar and calcaneal morphology were evaluated using statistical shape modeling. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationship between subtalar kinematics and the morphology features of the talus and calcaneus. RESULTS: This study found that a shallower posterior facet of the talus was correlated with the subtalar joint being in more dorsiflexion, more inversion, and more internal rotation, and higher curvature in the posterior facet was correlated with more inversion and eversion range of motion during stance. In the calcaneus, a gentler slope of the middle facet was correlated with greater subtalar inversion. CONCLUSION: The morphology of the posterior facet of the talus was found to a primary factor driving multiplanar subtalar joint kinematics during the stance phase of gait. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This new knowledge relating form and function in the hindfoot may assist in identifying individuals susceptible to subtalar instability and in improving implant design to achieve desired kinematics after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis is frequently performed by foot and ankle surgeons in the management of complex ankle and hindfoot pathology. In this study, the authors describe the clinical and radiological outcomes of tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis using a solid posterior offset hindfoot arthrodesis nail. METHODS: Forty-four consecutive patients underwent tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis by a single surgeon operating in two centers. Clinical and radiological outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 6-month, 12-month and final follow-up (mean 47 months). Clinical outcomes were assessed with VAS, AOFAS and MOXFQ scores. Serial radiographs were used to assess union at each follow-up visit. RESULTS: Forty-four patients attended 12-month and final follow-up (mean 47 months). A total of 44 (100%) ankle joints and 44 (100%) subtalar joints were completely united at 12-month follow-up. The VAS score improved significantly from a mean of 6.5 preoperatively to a mean of 0.98 at final follow-up (P = <0.0001). AOFAS score improved significantly from a mean of 36.4 preoperatively to a mean of 73 at final follow-up (P = <0.0001). MOXFQ score improved significantly from a mean of 44.5 preoperatively to a mean of 12.7 at final follow-up (P = <0.0001). The mean change in frontal plane alignment was 5.7 degrees (P = 0.005). A total of 6 patients (13.6%) had an adverse event during the course of the study. CONCLUSIONS: Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis with a solid posterior offset hindfoot arthrodesis nail is a safe and effective surgical option for patients with severe ankle and hindfoot pathology. It has a high union rate, low complication rate and significantly improves clinical outcomes.

Percutaneous antegrade (anterior to posterior) fixation for subtalar joint (STJ) arthrodesis offers various intraoperative and biomechanical advantages. Currently, the entry point for percutaneous antegrade STJ screw fixation is not clearly described and variable. To our knowledge, there are no publications that evaluate anatomic structures at risk or define an anatomically safe entry point for this fixation. The aim of this investigation was to define an anatomically safe and reproducible entry point for percutaneous antegrade STJ arthrodesis fixation, while also describing anatomic structures at risk when undertaking this method of fixation. We hypothesized that percutaneous single screw antegrade STJ fixation would encroach upon named anatomic structures in more than one cadaveric specimen. Ten cadaver limbs were used in this investigation. A percutaneous guidewire was inserted 5 mm lateral to the tibialis anterior tendon. The midpoint of the talar neck served as the sagittal plane starting point, as seen on the lateral fluoroscopic view. A cannulated 6.5-mm headed screw was inserted antegrade through the STJ into the calcaneus. Each specimen was dissected to assess the distance from the screw to nearby anatomic structures and distance from the tibialis anterior tendon to named structures. Our hypothesis was found to be incorrect, as 0/10 screws invaded neurovascular or tendinous structures. The dorsalis pedis artery and deep peroneal nerve were on average 12.1 ± 2.79 mm and 12.2 ± 2.82 mm lateral to the screw, respectively. These findings are clinically relevant and ultimately allow us to define an anatomic safe starting point for percutaneous antegrade STJ single screw fixation.

BACKGROUND: A medializing calcaneal osteotomy (MCO) is considered as one of the key inframalleolar osteotomies to correct progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD). While many studies were able to determine the post-operative hind- and midfoot alignment, alternations of the subtalar joint alignment remained obscured by superposition on plain radiography. Therefore, we aimed to assess the hind-, midfoot- and subtalar joint alignment pre- compared to post-operatively using 3D weightbearing CT (WBCT) imaging. METHODS: Seventeen patients with a mean age of 42 ± 17 years were retrospectively analyzed. Inclusion criteria consisted of PCFD deformity corrected by a medializing calcaneal osteotomy (MCO) as main procedure and imaged by WBCT before and after surgery. Exclusion criteria were patients who had concomitant calcaneal lengthening osteotomies, mid-/hindfoot fusions, hindfoot coalitions, and supramalleolar procedures. Image data were used to generate 3D models and compute the hindfoot (HA), midfoot (MA) - and subtalar joint (STJ) alignment in the coronal, sagittal and axial plane, as well as distance maps. RESULTS: Pre-operative measurements of the HA and MA improved significantly relative to their post-operative equivalents p < 0.05). The post-operative STJ alignment showed significant inversion (2.8° ± 1.7), abduction (1.5° ± 1.8), and dorsiflexion (2.3° ± 1.7) of the talus relative to the calcaneus (p < 0.05) compared to the pre-operative alignment. The displacement between the talus and calcaneus relative to the sinus tarsi increased significantly (0.6 mm±0.5; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study detected significant changes in the sagittal, coronal, and axial plane alignment of the subtalar joint, which corresponded to a decompression of the sinus tarsi. These findings contribute to our clinical practice by demonstrating the magnitude of alteration in the subtalar joint alignment that can be expected after PCFD correction with MCO as main procedure.

BACKGROUND: Osseous structures have been demonstrated as risk factors for chronic ankle instability (CAI). Previously, the researchers only focused on the osseous structures of ankle, but ignored the osseous structures of subtalar joint(STJ). Accordingly, the aim of our study was to investigate the morphological characteristics of STJ osseous structures in CAI. METHODS: 52 patients with CAI and 52 sex- and age- matched control subjects were enrolled from The Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Southwest Medical University. The lateral radiographs of ankle in weight-bearing were used to compare the diversity of the two groups. Specifically, The Length of calcaneus, Calcaneal facet height and Absolute foot height, Böhler's angle, Gissane's angle, Calcaneal inclination angle, Talocalcaneal angle, Tibiotalar angle, Tibiocalcaneal angle, Talar-horizontal angle, talar declination angle, facet inclination angle were gauged in the two groups. RESULTS: The Böhler's angle, Calcaneal inclination, Talocalcaneal angle, Tibiotalar angle, Talar-horizontal angle, Talar declination angle, Facet inclination angle and Absolute foot height of CAI group were significantly higher than normal control group (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in Gissane's angle, Tibiocalcaneal angle, Length of calcaneus and Calcaneal facet height between patients with CAI and normal controls (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The osseous structures of STJ in CAI patients are different from normal people in morphology. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the changes of STJ anatomical parameters in the diagnosis and prevention of CAI. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Ⅲ.

ABSTRACT

Aims: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may provoke ankle symptoms. The aim of this study was to validate the impact of the preoperative mechanical tibiofemoral angle (mTFA), the talar tilt (TT) on ankle symptoms after TKA, and assess changes in the range of motion (ROM) of the subtalar joint, foot posture, and ankle laxity. Methods: Patients who underwent TKA from September 2020 to September 2021 were prospectively included. Inclusion criteria were primary end-stage osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence stage IV) of the knee. Exclusion criteria were missed follow-up visit, post-traumatic pathologies of the foot, and neurological disorders. Radiological angles measured included the mTFA, hindfoot alignment view angle, and TT. The Foot Function Index (FFI) score was assessed. Gait analyses were conducted to measure mediolateral changes of the gait line and ankle laxity was tested using an ankle arthrometer. All parameters were acquired one week pre- and three months postoperatively. Results: A total of 69 patients (varus n = 45; valgus n = 24) underwent TKA and completed the postoperative follow-up visit. Of these, 16 patients (23.2%) reported the onset or progression of ankle symptoms. Varus patients with increased ankle symptoms after TKA had a significantly higher pre- and postoperative TT. Valgus patients with ankle symptoms after TKA showed a pathologically lateralized gait line which could not be corrected through TKA. Patients who reported increased ankle pain neither had a decreased ROM of the subtalar joint nor increased ankle laxity following TKA. The preoperative mTFA did not correlate with the postoperative FFI (r = 0.037; p = 0.759). Conclusion: Approximately one-quarter of the patients developed ankle pain after TKA. If patients complain about ankle symptoms after TKA, standing radiographs of the ankle and a gait analysis could help in detecting a malaligned TT or a pathological gait.

ABSTRACT

Subtalar joint arthrodesis is a commonly used procedure for numerous pathologic conditions in the foot and ankle. Although rarely performed in isolation, this procedure can provide successful resolution of various lower-extremity complaints. There are traditional approaches to isolated subtalar joint arthrodesis; however, when these fail, the authors recommend alternatives to enhance the success of revisional surgery. These include the use of intramedullary nailing, larger harvest of autograft, and metallic wedge.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to find the factors influencing successful bone union for isolated subtalar arthrodesis in posttraumatic subtalar arthritis following calcaneal fracture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the rate of successful bone union of 119 cases of isolated subtalar arthrodesis for posttraumatic subtalar arthritis performed at five university hospitals between January 2010 and December 2019. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to find the factors associated with successful bone union. Successful bone union was defined as resolution of hindfoot pain with the presence of osseous trabecular bridging involving more than 50% of the posterior facet within 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: There were 77 (64.7%) cases of successful bone union, 11 (9.2%) cases of delayed union, 8 (6.7%) cases of questionable union, and 23 (19.3%) cases of nonunion. Use of fully threaded screws was 5.90 times [odds ratio (OR) = 5.90, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.42-24.49, p = 0.02] more likely to achieve successful bone union compared to the use of partially threaded screws. Use of two parallel screws or the two divergent screws were 3.71 times (OR = 3.71, 95% CI = 1.05-13.14, p = 0.04) and 4.65 times (OR = 4.65, 95% CI = 1.23-17.53, p = 0.02) more likely to achieve successful bone union compared to the use of a single screw. Use of cancellous autograft or structural autograft was 4.72 times (OR = 4.72, 95% CI = 1.17-19.06, p = 0.03) and 7.12 times (OR = 7.12, 95% CI = 1.46-34.68, p = 0.02) more likely to achieve successful bone union compared to no graft use. CONCLUSION: Use of fully threaded screws, autograft, and two screws compared to a single screw were the factors associated with successful bone union within six postoperative months after subtalar arthrodesis for the posttraumatic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The subtalar joint may compensate for tibio-talar deformity, but what would happen to the joint after the deformity was corrected is not well known. Supramalleolar osteotomy (SMOT) is an effective procedure for the treatment of varus deformity of ankle arthritis. The objective of this study was to investigate the subtalar joint alignment pre and postoperatively following SMOT, and the factors which influenced the alignment of the subtalar joint. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with varus ankle arthritis (Takakura stage 2, 3a and 3b) who were treated using SMOT were retrospectively reviewed. The subtalar and ankle joint alignment was measured on weightbearing radiograph and weightbearing computerized tomography (WBCT). RESULTS: The foot and ankle offset (FAO), tibial articular surface angle (TAS), tibio-talar surface angle (TTS), and subtalar vertical angle (SVA) were significantly corrected (P<0.05). The subtalar inclination angle (SIA) decreased in 19 patients and increased in the other 12 cases after the SMOT (P<0.001). The shift of subtalar joint (ΔSIA) showed an inverse correlation with the preoperative FAO (P<0.001, r = -0.621). CONCLUSIONS: The shift of subtalar joint after SMOT could maintain the neutral position of the hindfoot and showed a negative correlation with the preoperative FAO. The ΔSIA was greater in the severer preoperative hindfoot deformity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, case series.

ABSTRACT

Subtalar instability is a confusing yet important condition in patients with lateral ankle instability. The author will explore subtalar kinematics, and how they are closely related to the joint stability of the subtalar joint, both with respect to its intrinsic ligaments and its extrinsic ligaments. As subtalar instability is difficult to diagnose, this article will provide readers with a better understanding of its clinical presentation. Discussions will also include useful radiographic modalities and the most recent evidence regarding their accuracy. The last section discusses surgical options and what the readers need to know in order to make a decision.

BACKGROUND: Varus ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is typically associated with peritalar instability, which may result in altered subtalar joint position. This study aimed to determine the extent to which total ankle replacement (TAR) in varus ankle OA can restore the subtalar alignment. METHODS: Fourteen patients (15 ankles, mean age 61 ± 6 years) who underwent TAR for varus ankle OA were analyzed using semi-automated measurements based on weight-bearing computed tomography. Twenty healthy individuals served as a control group. RESULTS: All angles improved between preoperative and a minimum of 1 year (mean 2.1 years) postoperative and were statistically significant in 6 out of 8 angles (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that talus repositioning after TAR restores the subtalar joint alignment which may improve hindfoot biomechanics. Future studies are required to implement these findings for TAR in presence of hindfoot deformity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the clinical effect of incongruent subtalar joint space on total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients who underwent TAA were grouped according to the status of subtalar joint incongruency. A comparison of clinical and radiographic parameters between groups as well as multiple regression analysis was performed to identify contributing factors to the final functional outcome. RESULTS: The final American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score was significantly higher in the congruent group compared to that of the incongruent group (p = 0.007). There were no significant differences between the two groups in measured radiographic angles. In multiple regression analysis, the female sex (p = 0.006) and incongruency of the subtalar joint (p = 0.013) were found to be significant contributing factors to the final AOFAS score. CONCLUSIONS: A thorough preoperative investigation should be taken into the state of the subtalar joint for TAA.

Subtalar arthroscopy is being more commonly utilized by surgeons who perform foot and ankle arthroscopy. The joint can be entered from an anterior lateral or posterior approach. There is unique pathology in the joint that can be repaired through an arthroscopic approach.
