ABSTRACT

By collecting relevant ancient literature, with retention of urine, umbilical therapy and Shenque (CV 8) as key words, various umbilical therapies for retention of urine from the Song dynasty to Qing dynasty were retrieved and summarized. The results indicated rich knowledge of umbilical therapy was recorded in ancient literature (the Song dynasty to the Qing dynasty), including 9 kinds of therapies e.g. sticking umbilical method, ironing umbilical method, pasting umbilical method, smearing umbilical method, filling umbilical method, sealing umbilical method, covering umbilical method, dripping umbilical method and bundling umbilical method. Moreover, the detailed methods were briefly explained. It is hoped to provide reference for modern application of umbilical therapy for retention of urine.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To perform a chronological search about symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction of prostatic origin and some of its treatments. METHODS/RESULTS: Over the years we have been collecting data about the topic from books and journals; we present them in such a way that they can be consulted chronologically. From more than 100 references we have selected the 60 most relevant to our judgment. CONCLUSIONS: Many ideas about the syndrome and the way to solve it have arisen, which vary from one time to another. For most urologists, the main operative complication has always been bleeding, leading to the development of a great number of techniques to avoid it. Infection, the other great complication, prompted that initially surgical maneuvers were performed very fastly and with the small incisions. In addition, big drainages were necessary.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Galen was a brilliant anatomist and pioneer of experimental physiology. His many important discoveries exerted a profound influence on medicine during the next 1400 years. However, his wish to solve all the problems of health and disease led him to speculate and draw mistaken conclusions which were widely believed until after the Renaissance.

ABSTRACT

The Museum of History of Medicine of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" has a rich collection of probes and metal catheters, some of which in surgical kits. Tracing the history of catheters, the authors follow the technical evolution in the field of urology techniques, also highlighting the intelligent craft of artisans, surgeons, barbers - and the industrial effort to ameliorate techniques. The use and the crafting of these instruments are to be related to new knowledge in the fields of urethral, vesical and prostatic occlusion. Italian contribution of the field is stressed, highlighting the original experience of Michele Troja, who invented and diffused metal catheters covered in caouthouc.
