ABSTRACT

The coexistence between humans and dogs favors zoonosis dissemination. Among them, leptospirosis stands out in Brazil. This work aimed to evaluate dog tutors/owners' knowledge about this disease. It also aimed to indirectly assess whether veterinarians instruct tutors/owners about prophylaxis and control of this zoonosis, as well as raise a discussion about the role of veterinarians as professional educators in their realm. A questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge of tutors/owners. A total of 98% interviewees said that leptospirosis represents a risk to humans and 51% believed it can lead to death. There was incorrect and confusing information about this subject. The assessment on the knowledge about transmission routes and animal species involved, showed only a connection with rats. The possibility of contracting this disease from dogs was unknown to 72% of interviewees. The data set showed the need for a reflection on the role of veterinarians in health education of the dog tutor/owner population.

The aim of this paper was the evaluation, in a broad sense, of the knowledge of these individuals about ectoparasitic control. During the year 2003, 202 interviews were conducted in eight Brazilian states (Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás e Ceará): 97 of them with Veterinarians (Vets) and 105 with Pet Store Owners (PSO). In 2011, the same survey was conducted only, in the state of São Paulo where it was performed, 25 interviews with Vets and 27 with PSO. The results obtained showed that Vets and PSO have a good knowledge about integrated control (IC), but their customers do not. Ticks were the ectoparasite most frequently reported as a problem for both Vets and PSO. The comparison of 2003 versus 2011 results showed a significant difference in the knowledge of PSO about IC was noticed, with a marked decrease in the most recent survey. Spot on was found as the ideal application method on both occasions, showing however, increased predilection in 2011 survey. Based on the comparisons between the two surveys, three hypotheses regarding knowledge and perception of Vets and PSO are presented as interesting topics for future research. They address respectively the specific knowledge of the PSO, the perception of Vets about the effectiveness of ectoparasitic products and their safety.

Background: Infertility affects approximately 15% of couples of childbearing age, and there is evidence that fertility has been declining at an accelerated pace in recent years. Recent advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have made biological parenthood possible for couples who previously had no hope of childbearing. On the other hand, the primary use of embryo transfer in cattle has been amplification of the reproductive rates of valuable females. In 2007, 245,257 bovine embryos were produced globally; Brazil accounted for 86.6% of this output. The popularity of this technology has contributed to the growing knowledge of embryology among veterinarians. Because of ethical concerns regarding the use of human subjects, bovines have been used as a model for the study of reproductive biology in women. Therefore, this manuscript will discuss approaches for oocyte selection and sperm selection that were developed in animal models and adapted for ART in humans. Review: One of the most important factors determining the outcome of embryo development is gamete quality. Numerous attempts have been made to identify prognostic factors for oocyte development potential. One promising approach uses spindle imaging as a predictor of oocyte quality. The development of a polarised light microscope that evaluates the birefringence of living cells enabled the evaluation of highly birefringent oocyte spindles without damage to the cell. Polarised light microscopy also enables the evaluation of other birefringent, sub-cellular oocytes structures, such as the zona pellucida. The birefringence of the meiotic spindle and the zona pellucida are valuable tools in predicting the developmental potential of oocytes and embryos. The post-genomic era has facilitated the growth of non-invasive approaches to the study of embryonic physiology and to predicting oocyte developmental competence and viability. These approaches include the assessment of proteomic profiling and, most recently, of the oocyte and embryonic metabolome. Although intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI outcomes are apparently unrelated to basic sperm parameters, recent reports have suggested a paternal contribution to the success of embryonic development and implantation, and a new method for sperm evaluation has been proposed. It is now possible to examine the nuclear morphology of spermatozoa at 6600x magnification. This technique has allowed the introduction of a modified ICSI procedure called "intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection" (IMSI). As a consequence, real-time, detailed morphological sperm examination using motile sperm organelle morphology examination (MSOME) enables the best available spermatozoa to be selected prior to oocyte injection. Recent reports have suggested that normal nuclear morphology, as viewed under high magnification, may be useful for selecting spermatozoa with higher developmental capacity. Conclusion: Studies in animal reproduction have allowed the development of non-invasive methods of evaluating sperm and oocytes prior to their use in ART. Gamete quality biomarkers, once identified, may allow embryos with the highest implantation potential to be selected with greater accuracy. The use of such biomarkers may thus yield an increased chance of pregnancy, which is the primary objective of ART.

Background: Infertility is a disease affecting 10% of the human population in reproductive age and couples experiencing difficulties to achieve pregnancy may benefit from assisted reproduction treatment. According to the Red Latinoamericana de Reproducción Asistida, approximately 34,100 in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments were performed in Latin America in 2007 and 42.3% (14,428) of these treatments were conducted in Brazil. Standard techniques and treatments for infertility were developed within the last 4 decades and some of them are still under technological improvements or they are frequently considered experimental or "state of art" technology. Usually, these treatments and techniques to overcome infertility were developed by professionals with different backgrounds including physicians, biologists, veterinarians and nurses. We aimed to review the role of veterinarians in translating animal biotechnology to human assisted procreation, developing new assisted reproduction technologies and treatments, and finally acting in clinical embryology laboratories as embryologists or supervisors. Review: Human assisted reproduction landmarks were: (i) the birth of the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) child; (ii) the implementation of intracytoplasmatic sperm injection; and, more recently, (iii) the development of successful protocols of vitrification for cryopreservation of embryos and oocytes. Veterinarians' contribution and participation in the field of human assisted procreation could be distinguished between technological development and/or clinical embryology. Despite of the 3 year delay on the birth of the first in vitro fertilization calf in relation to the birth of the first IVF baby, many steps and protocols of these technological advancements relied on the knowledge acquired from animal models or biotechnologies now used for commercial purposes in animal production and breeding. Furthermore, new embryo culture technologies such as microfluidics environments and controlled atmospheres are initially evaluated in animal models. Another example of the role of veterinarians on the development of human assisted reproduction is the emergence of the widespread concept of ovarian dynamics pattern of follicular waves in monovulatory animals from Theriogenology to Reproductive Medicine in the last decade. The translation of this concept to Reproductive Medicine might allow the development of different approaches of controlled ovarian stimulation. In a human assisted reproduction clinic, the clinical embryology laboratory is responsible for selecting oocytes after transvaginal ovum pick-up, fertilizing these oocytes, cultivating the supposed zygotes until the stage of 8 cell embryos or blastocysts, and embryo preparation for transference to the uterine cavity. Several tasks enrolled in these steps of human IVF are identical to those performed by veterinarians in an animal IVF facility; however, a veterinarian must be familiar to the specific guidelines and needs of a human IVF laboratory. Conclusion: Assisted reproduction treatments are performed by groups of professionals with different academic backgrounds. Veterinarians have been playing an important roles in the development and/or adaptation of several biotechnologies utilized for human procreation; additionally, veterinarians working on animal in vitro fertilization facilities have an adequate formation and skills to act on and/or supervise clinical embryology laboratories after specific education, practice and certification.
