ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of kinesio taping (KT) or KT plus conventional therapy on pain, muscle strength, funrefction, and range of motion in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Data sources: Databases included PubMed, Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Airiti Library, EMBASE, and WOS search engines. Search terms related to KT and knee OA were combined and searched. Articles that met the inclusion criteria and were graded with a Jadad score ≥3 were included in a meta-analysis to calculate the total effect. The exclusion criteria were non-English-language articles, non-original articles, non-full-text articles, no description of the intervention, or articles with a Jadad score ≤2. Eleven articles were included in the meta-analysis. KT treatment had a significant small total effect on pain reduction (p < 0.001; n = 1509; standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.42; 95% CI = -0.65 to -0.18) and a significant moderate total effect on isokinetic muscle strength improvement (p = 0.001; n = 447; SMD = 0.72; 95% CI = 0.28 to 1.16). No significant total effects of KT on isometric muscle strength, time to complete functional tasks, or ROM improvement were found. KT or KT plus conventional therapy has a significant effect on pain relief and isokinetic but not isometric muscle strength improvement in patients with knee OA. KT can be an effective tool for treating knee OA pain and is especially valuable for aiding in isokinetic muscle strength. (PROSPERO register ID: CRD42021252313).

ABSTRACT

Low-back pain has a high impact on the world population, and solutions are in demand. The behavior of specific physiological processes has been modified using magnetic fields, whether for pain relief, bone consolidation, or improvement of vascularization. The use of tape with magnetic properties could help in these cases. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to use Magnetic Tape® versus placebo Kinesio tape. Blood flow variables were evaluated using pulsed power Doppler ultrasound. Resistance index, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, and diastolic velocity were measured. The pressure pain threshold was measured using algometry in 22 subjects. The results reveal significant differences between the groups for the pulsation index variable (8.06 [5.16, 20.16] in Magnetic Tape® versus 5.50 [4.56, 6.64] in Kinesio tape) and lower (0.98 [0.92, 1.02] for Magnetic Tape® versus 0.99 [0.95, 1.01] for Kinesio tape) in the resistance index variable. The pressure pain threshold variable presented significant differences at multiple levels. The application of Magnetic Tape® causes immediate effects on blood flow and pain and could be a technique of choice for pain modulation. Further studies would be necessary.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Kinesio taping (KT) on playing-related pain, upper extremity and hand function, grip and pinch strength in violin players. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Faculty of health sciences. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred seventeen participants who were professional violinists for at least two years (82 women; mean age, 22.76 ± 3.87 years) were randomized to receive either therapeutic tape application (KT group), a sham tape application (placebo group), or no application (control group) for one week. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) in one week. The secondary outcomes were the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Purdue Pegboard Test, grip and pinch strength. Outcome measures were performed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and one week later (follow-up). Participants were asked to play the "Violin Concerto No.2, Op.35 (Rieding, Oskar)"; pre-and post-performance pain and grip and pinch strength were assessed. RESULTS: The overall group-by-time interaction was not significant for DASH, but the improvement in the mean VAS-playing was slightly better in the KT group than in others (p < 0.05). The mean post-performance VAS-playing remained similar in the KT group while slightly increasing in the other groups (p < 0.05). In addition, a decrease in the mean post-performance grip strength of the left hand was significantly lower in the KT group than in the other groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Violin players receiving an application of KT represented minor improvements in playing-related pain, and post-performance pain intensity and grip strength of the left hand slightly remained after 1 week kT application. The possible post-performance effect of the tape on the pain intensity and grip strength must also be considered because KT can be used during the performance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome is a regional musculoskeletal pain syndrome characterized by trigger points. Although there are widely accepted treatment modalities, there is no gold standard treatment. Kinesiotaping represents an interesting modality in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and attracts attention with studies emerging in the recent years, but in spite of the proposed benefits of kinesiotaping, its efficacy is still unclear, thus further studies evaluating the effectiveness of kinesiotaping are needed. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate, not only the effectiveness of kinesiotaping applied with the space correction and muscle inhibition techniques (compared to the home exercise program in reducing pain and improving functional status and quality of life in female patients with myofascial pain syndrome related to active trigger points in the upper trapezius), but also to evaluate the superiority of the 2 techniques over each other. STUDY DESIGN: An open-label randomized clinical trial with a parallel assignment intervention model. SETTING: The physical medicine and rehabilitation clinics in Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. METHODS: Seventy-one female patients with the complaint of pain in the upper trapezius region, diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome, and having at least one active trigger point in the upper trapezius fibers, were randomly assigned by a computer program to 1 of the 3 groups: kinesiotaping with the space correction technique (KSCT, n = 20), kinesiotaping with the muscle inhibition technique (KMIT, n = 24), and the home exercise program alone (control group [CG], n = 27). The patients were evaluated by the numerical rating scale for pain intensity, the neck disability index for functional status, and the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey for quality of life in the beginning of the study and at the first, second, and sixth weeks (1-month follow-up). RESULTS: Kinesiotaping was associated with lower pain intensity levels (P = 0.019 at the first week and P = 0.026 at the second week) and better functional status (P = 0.011 at the second week) and it was effective in increasing quality of life by improving physical functions and general health (P = 0.033 and P = 0.003 at the second week, respectively) earlier than in the CG. Role limitations due to physical factors improved in the KMIT group earlier than in the other groups (P = 0.022 at the second week). LIMITATIONS: Being performed in a limited number of female patients only, absence of a placebo group, and lack of blinded assessments. CONCLUSION: Both kinesiotaping methods were associated with lower pain intensity levels and better functional status and were effective in increasing quality of life by improving physical functions and general health earlier than the home exercise program. There was no significant difference between the kinesiotaping methods, except for role limitations due to the physical factors domain of SF-36 which was improved in the KMIT group earlier than in the KSCT group and CGs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of Mulligan mobilisation with Kinesio Tex tape on pain and disability in anterior innominate dysfunction in females. Methods: The quasi-experimental study was conducted from March to August 2018 at the Allied Hospital and Javeed Medical Complex, Faisalabad, Pakistan, and comprised women with anterior innominate dysfunction. The subjects were divided into group A, which was treated with therapeutic ultrasound, Mulligan mobilisation and Kinesio taping, and group B, which was treated with therapeutic ultrasound and Mulligan mobilisation. Data was taken at baseline and after 10 days to measure pain and disability using visual analogue scale and Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 30 women, there were 15(50%) in group A with a mean age of 32.80±6.02 years and 15(50%) in group B with a mean age of 34.20±6.51 years. Both groups showed significant improvement in pain and disability post-treatment (p<0.05), with group A showing more improvement than group B in terms of disability (p=0.001), but not in terms of pain (p=0.20). CONCLUSIONS: Both Mulligan mobilisation along with Kineso Tex tape and Mulligan mobilisation alone were found to be effective in reducing pain and disability, with the tape showing better improvement in pain and disability compared to those receiving mobilisation alone.

ABSTRACT

The review provides scientific data on modern aspects of using the kinesiotaping method in neurological patients. Possible clinical taping methods for myofascial pain and post-traumatic disorders of the musculoskeletal system are considered. The important role in the correction of biomechanical disorders and the rehabilitation potential of the taping method in the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal pathology has been demonstrated. Experimental and clinical studies of Russian and foreign scientists are presented, indicating the promise of therapeutic and preventive possibilities of kinesiotaping. Conclusions are made about the advisability of using kinesiotaping in an interdisciplinary approach in the treatment of patients with neurological disorders.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the effect of the Kinesio Tape on the muscle power of the elite weightlifters. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial, single blind. Forty-two male weightlifters were randomly assigned to the experimental Kinesio Tape and sham Kinesio Tape groups of the study. The participants then performed a single leg vertical jump and a single leg horizontal jump with three attempts of each to obtain the measurement of muscle power. Outcome measures were included single-leg vertical countermovement jump, estimated peak power, and single-leg horizontal countermovement jump. RESULT: Significant effect of Kinesio Tape on horizontal jumps distance among the weightlifters in the experimental group (p = 0.002). The study showed that the vertical jump height (p = 0.433), estimated peak power (p = 0.542) and horizontal jump distance (p = 0.841) measurements did not improve significantly between the groups at level p = 0.05. CONCLUSION: There is a small and better improvement noticed on the outcome measurements after Kinesio Tape application, which may be considered clinical importance for the sport. However, there was no statistically significant effect of Kinesio Tape between the groups.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder pain increases excitation of the upper trapezius (UT) and reduces excitation in the lower trapezius (LT). Despite inconclusive evidence, kinesio-tape (KT) is often used to modify muscular excitation within the UT and/or LT to help correct alterations in scapular position and motion associated with shoulder pain/injury. The objective of the current study was to determine if inhibitory KT to the UT acutely increases LT excitation and if load alters the magnitude of change in the excitation observed. METHODS: Twenty-two (N = 22, 11 female) individuals with healthy shoulders (24 ± 3 years) completed 10 repetitions of an arm elevation task during 3 taping conditions (no-tape, experimental KT, sham KT) and 2 loading conditions (no load and loaded). Whole-muscle (mean grid) and spatial distribution (grid row) of LT excitation (root mean squared; RMS) was measured using a single high-density surface electromyography 32-electrode grid. RESULTS: There was a main effect for loading condition on whole-muscle LT RMS, F (1, 19) = 38.038, p < .001, partial η2 = 0.667. Whole-muscle LT RMS was significantly higher in the loaded condition (0.055 V ±0 .005) compared to the no-load condition (0.038 V ±0 .004). No effect of tape condition was observed on whole-muscle or spatial distribution of RMS. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that inhibitory KT to the UT does not alter whole-muscle excitation or shift the distribution of excitation within the LT during a repeated arm elevation task in healthy shoulders.

BACKGROUND: Kinesiotape (KT) is a technique commonly used in sports practice. It may be beneficial in enhancing muscle function by additional cutaneous afferent stimulation. The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of KT on countermovement jump (CMJ) and 20-m sprints (sp) immediately and 24 h after its application on the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. METHODS: 37 male soccer players (19.7 ± 0.9 years old) were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: experimental group: KT activation (KTact), placebo group: sham tape (KTst), and control group (CG). Participants performed a 30-min preliminary warm-up, after which they conducted CMJ and 20-m sp tests. These tests were repeated later (with KT application or not) and after 24 h. RESULTS: Intergroup results found no significant differences either post-test (CMJ, p = 0.115; sp, p = 0.307) or after 24 h (p = 0.053). Intragroup results showed no significant results for CMJ, although 20-m sp seemed to display significant differences in the (KTst) (p = 0.002, post-hoc: 0.015 in pre_sp vs post_sp) and the (KTact) (0.021, in post-hoc: 0.007 in pre_sp vs post_sp), with a moderate effect in pre_sp vs post_sp (0.66) in the (KTact) after KT was applied. CONCLUSION: KT application on the gluteus maximus and quadriceps in young soccer players increases the sprint execution time immediately and 24 h after application, even that the sprint execution time had not been grater that one tenth of the second (0.08 s). It also has no effect on CMJ.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of taping techniques on arch deformation in adults with pes planus. METHODS: The following databases were searched up to March 2020, including Web of Science, Pubmed, EBSCO, CNKI and Cochrane Library. Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed by I2 index and funnel plots, respectively. In addition, Cochrane scale was used to evaluate the quality of research. RESULTS: Navicular height for three antipronation taping techniques significantly increased immediately post tape compared with baseline (mean difference = 4.86 mm, 95% CI = 2.86-6.87 mm, Z = 4.75, p < 0.001). The highest increase was observed in Augmented low-Dye (ALD). Modified low-Dye (MLD) was second only to ALD (p<0.001). Navicular height after walking for 10 min was much higher than baseline (p<0.001), with MLD decreased smaller than ALD. CONCLUSIONS: ALD was the most effective taping technique for controlling foot arch collapse immediately post tape compared with baseline, followed by MLD. By contrast, MLD could possibly performed better than ALD in maintaining immediate navicular height after walking for 10 min. Low-Dye could make resting calcaneal stance position closer to neutral position. Although positive effects of Navicular sling, low-Dye and Double X taping interventions were observed, they could not maintain this immediate navicular height effect after a period of higher intensity weight-bearing exercise.

ABSTRACT

In the conditions of increasingly stringent anti-doping rules, the development of new non-drug methods of treatment and rehabilitation of athletes is of particular importance. OBJECTIVE: Development of new methods of medical rehabilitation of athletes after injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-three athletes with knee injuries were examined. The main complaints were the presence of pronounced edema in the area of injury. All patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: in group 1 (16 patients) lymphatic drainage kinesis-taping was performed; in the 2nd group (17 patients) - complex treatment including lymphatic drainage kinesis-taping and low-frequency pulse magnetic therapy. Using laser Doppler flowmetry a study of microcirculatory disorders in the area of injury was carried out. The severity of edema was assessed by measuring the circumference of the knee joint of the diseased and healthy limbs. The assessment of the subjective feelings of athletes using questionnaires CIVIQ2 andVAS. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Based on the obtained subjective and objective data, a medical complex was developed using lymphatic drainage kinesis-taping and low-frequency pulse magnetic therapy, which affects different steps in the pathogenesis of edema formation. Data obtained resultedin more pronounced positive effect during complex treatment compared with monotherapy with kinesis-taping.

BACKGROUND: An unstable ankle along with plantar flexor muscle fatigue may exacerbate landing performance. External support may be an option to control the ankle motion and protect joints from injuries. Research goal: To investigate the immediate changes in the joint motion of a lower extremity under ankle plantar flexors fatigue conditions in athletes with unstable ankles using different external supports. METHODS: A total of 44 participants were allocated to a control (Cn) group, an ankle brace (AB) group, and a kinesio tape (KT) group, and were asked to perform a lateral drop landing before and after a fatigue protocol. The outcome measures were fatigue-induced changes in the maximal joint angle and changes in the angle ranges of the hip, knee, and ankle. RESULTS: Smaller changes in the maximal hip abduction were found in the AB group (p = 0.025), and the KT group exhibited smaller changes in the maximal ankle dorsiflexion (p = 0.009). The AB group landed with a smaller change in the range of hip flexion and knee flexion (p = 0.008 and 0.006). The Cn group had greater fatigue-induced changes in the COM range than AB and KT group (p = 0.002 and 0.028). SIGNIFICANCE: Despite the beneficial effect in the postural control in the frontal plane, the use of AB might constrain the distal joint motion which might lead to an extended knee landing posture resulting in secondary injuries to the knee joint. Therefore, the use of AB in conjunction with an additional training of landing strategy might be recommended from the injury prevention perspective.

Introdução: A bandagem elástica é uma fita elástica adesiva utilizada na prevenção e reabilitação do complexo do ombro. Entretanto, existem divergências na literatura sobre seus efeitos na atividade eletromiográfica dos músculos periescapulares durante exercícios com carga. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da bandagem elástica na atividade eletromiográfica de músculos periescapulares durante o movimento de flexão do ombro sem carga e com halter em indivíduos saudáveis. Métodos: Vinte e seis indivíduos do sexo masculino realizaram o movimento de flexão do ombro sem carga e com halter com a bandagem elástica sobre o trapézio descendente. Foram avaliadas as atividades eletromiográficas de trapézio descendente, trapézio ascendente e serrátil anterior. São comparados os valores de pico e RMS em percentual da contração isométrica voluntária máxima através da ANOVA One Way. Resultados: Na flexão de ombro com halter ocorreu diminuição do pico da atividade eletromiográfica do trapézio descendente (p = 0,035). Não houve influência sobre os demais músculos periescapulares (p > 0,05). Conclusão: A bandagem elástica diminuiu o pico da atividade eletromiográfica do trapézio descendente durante a flexão do ombro com halter. Pode-se aplicar este resultado na prevenção de indivíduos que podem tender a aumentar a atividade do trapézio descendente. (AU)


Introduction: The kinesio tape is an elastic adhesive tape used in the prevention and rehabilitation of the shoulder complex. However, there are divergences in the literature about its effects on the electromyographic activity of the periescapular muscles during load exercises. Objective: To evaluate the effects of kinesio tape on the electromyographic activity of the periescapular muscles during the flexion of the shoulder without load and with a dumbbell in healthy subjects. Methods: Twenty-six male individuals perform the flexion movement of the shoulder without load and halter with and kinesio tape over the upper trapezius muscle. The electromyographic activities of upper trapezius, lower trapezius and anterior serratus were evaluated. Normalized Peak and RMS through percentage of maximum voluntary isometric contraction were compared using ANOVA One Way. Results: During flexion of the shoulder with a dumbbell, the electromyographic activity of the upper trapezius (p = 0.035) decreased. We did not observe influence on the other periescapular muscles (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The kinesio tape decrease the peak value of the upper trapezius during the flexion of the shoulder with dumbbell. We can apply this result to individuals who may increase the activity of the upper trapezius. (AU)

To examine the effects of kinesio taping on lower back muscle soreness immediately after its application and after 24 h during a cross-country skiing camp in collegiate students. The present study followed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial design. Out of the 60 participants in a winter skiing camp, 54 volunteered to participate in the study (aged 21.3 years old, 20 females and 34 males). After 3 days of practical cross-country ski lessons (4 h per day), volunteers were, balanced by sex, randomly divided into three groups. One group had kinesio taping applied on the lower back, another had placebo tape applied and the third group nothing. The two-way ANOVA with the Bonferroni adjustment showed that the lower back muscle soreness levels in the kinesio taping group decreased statistically significantly from baseline to after 24 h of the kinesio taping application (p= 0.020). Kinesio taping reduced low back muscle soreness 24 h after its application produce by several days of cross-country skiing in physically active collegiate students. Kinesio taping method may be beneficial in reducing post-exercise delayed onset muscle soreness in healthy sport collegiate students.

AIM: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction is an especially common cause of pain during pregnancy. Treatment options during pregnancy are very limited in order to reduce pain and increase the quality of life. We aimed to determine the efficacy of kinesiotaping (KT) in the treatment of SIJ pain in pregnant women. METHODS: A total of 50 pregnant women with SIJ pain were included in the study. Patients were randomised into two groups as KT and sham KT groups. Women in the KT group underwent a total of 5 weeks of KT once per week; the sham KT group also underwent 5 weeks of KT applications, but without tension in the kinesiotape. Patients were assessed before and 5 weeks after the treatment with a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) and Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire (PGQ) for disability and quality of life. RESULTS: The KT and sham KT groups were similar in terms of age, parity, gravidas, gestational week and body mass index. At the beginning of the study, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in their VAS, RMDQ or PGQ scores. Five weeks later, the KT group showed significant improvement in all parameters, but no significant differences were observed for the sham KT group in terms of VAS, RMDQ or PGQ. CONCLUSIONS: KT treatment improved the pain levels, functioning and quality of life among pregnant women with SIJ pain.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of Kinesio Taping combined with electroacupuncture in the treatment of patellofemoral disorder in middle-aged and elderly exercise enthusiasts. METHODS: From April 2018 to April 2020, 62 middle-aged and elderly exercisers with patellofemoral disorder were selected and divided into observation group and control group. In the observation group, there were 30 cases:12 males and 18 females, aged from 35 to 66 years old, with an average age of (48.32±6.80) years old. The observation group was treated with Kinesio Taping and electroacupuncture . In the control group, there were 32 cases:12 males and 20 females, aged from 35 to 67 years old, with an averageage of (48.67±8.13) years old. The patients in the control group was treated with knee electroacupuncture. All the patients in both groups were treated once every other day, 3 times a week, for a total of 4 weeks. The VAS pain score and knee Lysholm score before and after treatment were compared between the two groups before and after treatment, and statistical analysis was conducted. RESULTS: In the control group, 2 patients were not satisfied with the curative effect after 2 weeks of treatment and gave up treatment, while the remaining 60 patients completed all the treatments. After 4 weeks of treatment, the VAS and Lyshlom scores of the control group were 2.73±1.46 and 75.63±8.62 respectively;the VAS and Lyshlom scores of the observation group were 2.02±1.85 and 83.31±5.53 respectively;the VAS and Lyshlom scores of the observation group and the control group were better than those before treatment, and the Lyshlom scores of the observation group were better than those of the control group. CONCLUSION: Kinesio Taping combined with electroacupuncture is aimed at patellofemoral disorderof middle-aged and elderly sports enthusiasts. It has little trauma, can relieve pain and has a fast onset speed, which is readily accepted by patients, and promotes the rehabilitation of knee joint function of patients, thus providing a favorable reference for the promotion in clinical application.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of kinesio taping (KT) and dry needling (DN) in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) of the trapezius muscle. METHODS: The patients with MPS were divided into 3 groups as those who received exercise only (control group), those who received KT and exercise (KT group) and those who received DN and exercise (DN group) by using a sealed opaque envelope randomisation method. Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT), Neck Disability Index (NDI) and Global Perceived Effect Scale (GPES) were measured twice at baseline and at the end of the second week by blinded evaluator. RESULTS: A total of 26 patients were assigned to KT group, 32 to DN group and 30 to control group. The results of the study showed that PPT, VAS and NDI scores were significantly improved in the KT (1.61 ± 1.25, -2.66 ± 1.24 and -7.08 ± 6.24, respectively) and DN (1.30 ± 1.13, -3.34 ± 1.40 and -10.63 ± 7.80 respectively) groups (P < .001 for all). In the control group, no significant improvement was found in the VAS (.10 ± 1.39) and NDI (-.83 ± 4.91) scores (P > .05), with a significant decrease in PPT (-.98 ± 1.92) (P = .014). KT and DN methods in MPS treatment have more positive effects in terms of pain, disability and global effect compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: In the treatment of MPS, adding DN or KT to exercise programme may provide important contributions to the treatment.

ABSTRACT

Background: Kinesio tape (KT) may be useful for the treatment of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), but there has been no systematic review assessing their efficacy. Objectives: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of KT on DOMS. Methods: We searched seven databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and crossover randomized trials of KT in DOMS, from the earliest date available to December 31, 2019. The primary outcome was muscle soreness. The secondary outcome was muscle strength and serum creatine kinase (CK) level. The risk of bias was evaluated based on the Cochrane criteria. Data were analyzed using RevMan version 5.3.0 software. P values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Systematic review registration number is CRD42020157052. Results: Eight trials (six RCTs and two crossover randomized trials) with 289 participants were included. KT use significantly reduced muscle soreness at 48 h (mean difference (MD): -0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.10 to 0.24, P = 0.002) and 72 h postexercise (MD: -0.81, 95% CI: -1.45 to -0.17, P = 0.01) but not at 24 h. KT use improved muscle strength at 72 h postexercise (standardized mean difference: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.69, P = 0.04) but not at 24 or 48 h. However, the serum CK level at 24, 48, and 72 h postexercise was not better in the KT group relative to the control group. Conclusions: Current evidence suggests that KT might help to alleviate DOMS after strenuous exercise to improve muscle strength. Thus, using KT on the skin for more than 48 hours postexercise, but not for 24 h, appears more effective at relieving pain and improving muscle strength.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The definition of neuromuscular taping (NMT) has yet to be clearly analysed as a possible treatment for diabetic foot. Case studies, theoretical analysis and results of existing research may lead to varying perceptions on the definition of NMT and its possible effects on diabetic foot. This article aims to analyse the definition of the NMT concept and furthermore as a basis for future research development on diabetic foot. Methods: The procedure for reference source search include the principal data bases using "neuromuscular taping" and "diabetic foot" keywords for the period of 2010-2019. The concept analysis uses an 8-step approach with the Walker and Avant's method. Conclusions: NMT is a decompression application of an elastic tape on the skin on the diabetic foot that has the effect of reducing the inflammatory response, improving vascularity and neuromusculoskel-etal function. It aims to improve neuromusculoskeletal and lymphatic system functioning due to the presence of wrinkles, indicating dila-tion, with local effects on the sensorimotor and proprioceptive senses in conditions of care, rehabilitation and injury. Results: Analysis of the NMT concept on diabetic foot obtained attributes of elastic tape, skin, pain, edema, injury, sensorimotor, circulation, drainage, relaxation, local, proprioceptive, motion func-tion, strength, contraction, stabilisation, reflex, rehabilitation, care, musculoskeletal, nerve, muscles, tendons, fascia, joints, lymphatic, longitudinal, wrinkles. There were four groups of attributes, namely inflammatory response, vascularity, neuromusculoskeletal function and musculoskeletal system. NMT application benefits for diabetic foot can be attributed to improving walking function, leg position, decreasing pain response, improving body function index, improving leg muscle strength and motor function, increasing range of movement (ROM), maintaining stability of leg joint function, preventing injury, increas-ing strength and improving position of ankle joints, reducing stiffness, reducing edema and helping wound healing processes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is the most frequent medical problem and the condition with the most years lived with disability in Western countries. The objective of this study was to assess a new treatment, Medi-Taping, which aims at reducing complaints by treating pelvic obliquity with a combination of manual treatment of trigger points and kinesio taping in a pragmatic RCT with pilot character. METHODS: One hundred ten patients were randomized at two study centers either to Medi-Taping or to a standard treatment consisting of patient education and physiotherapy as control. Treatment duration was 3 weeks. Measures were taken at baseline, end of treatment and at follow-up after 2 months. Main outcome criteria were low back pain measured with VAS, the Chronic Pain Grade Scale (CPGS) and the Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (ODQ). RESULTS: Patients of both groups benefited from the treatment by medium to large effect sizes. All effects were pointing towards the intended direction. While Medi-Taping showed slightly better improvement rates, there were no significant differences for the primary endpoints between groups at the end of treatment (VAS: mean difference in change 0.38, 95-CI [- 0.45; 1.21] p = 0.10; ODQ 2.35 [- 0.77; 5.48] p = 0.14; CPGS - 0.19 [- 0.46; 0.08] p = 0.64) and at follow-up. Health-related quality of life was significantly higher (p = .004) in patients receiving Medi-Taping compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: Medi-Taping, a purported way of correcting pelvic obliquity and chronic tension resulting from it, is a treatment modality similar in effectiveness to complex physiotherapy and patient education.
