ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: to discuss the content of manuals, with emphasis on orthopedics, in support of the development of nursing care culture. METHODS: cultural-historical method articulated with document analysis technique. The sources were nursing manuals - Portuguese, French, English, and Spanish - from 1875 to 1928. RESULTS: this study pointed to 12 works - 6 authored by physicians, 2 by nurses, 3 institutional, and 1 by a Sister of Charity - that presented, in a transversal way, the professionalization process initiated in Europe. The manuals addressed first aid care and immobilization methods, from the simplest, such as improvised splints, to the application of plaster casts. CONCLUSIONS: the nurses' work, even in a limited capacity, showed that they were able to observe warning signs so that doctors could act, with some exceptions.

The Ministry of Health shares with other State institutions and women's organizations the responsibility of ensuring that care for women and adolescents affected by different types of violence is carried out under a comprehensive approach with special emphasis on achieving their empowerment. Therefore, an effective response to this end, in the consolidation and implementation of self-help groups for women and adolescents (GAAMA) in the Comprehensive and Integrated Health Networks, is the elaboration of the Manual for the training of facilitators of self-help groups of women and adolescents who experience gender violence, whose updating process began by calling on GAAMA facilitators with more than 10 years of experience, who shared their personal learning by facilitating the group, promoting the definition of clear guidelines for strengthening of these guidelines. The document describes different methods and concepts for the development of skills within the learning framework. The socialization of this Manual will be carried out through workshops aimed at multidisciplinary health personnel and institutions related to the comprehensive approach to women and adolescents affected by all forms of violence. The methodology used for the training of GAAMA facilitators allows the development of skills to understand the phenomenon of violence, with greater emphasis on violence that affects adolescents and women, group management, and knowledge of the legal framework that supports this approach. In this sense, the GAAMA provide a space to socialize and raise awareness about situations of violence that have directly affected them and start the process of helping themselves and at the same time helping other women and adolescents

ABSTRACT

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability that often leads to Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and greater healthcare utilization. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is useful although its long duration and the need for specialized therapists make it difficult to implement in low-resources settings, so brief interventions can complement DBT. The objective of the present study was to undertake cultural adaptation of a Brief, Manualized Intervention to reduce NSSI in the Mexican population with BPD. An experimental design with a single-case pilot study with replicas was used with seven women with a BPD diagnosis. Five to six online sessions were implemented and emotional dysregulation, experiential avoidance and NSSI were measured weekly. NAP index was calculated to assess the effect of the intervention. Most participants showed a large effect size in reducing NSSI and a moderate effect size in reducing emotional dysregulation. Moderate and small effect sizes were obtained in experiential avoidance. The intervention adapted and validated seems to be useful and serve as an additional therapeutically tool to complement usual treatment of patients with BPD (AU)

ABSTRACT

The illustrations of Hashime Murayama were vital in enabling the Papanicolaou test to be understood, admired and observed worldwide, making Papanicolaou's Atlas of cytology so fundamental in the detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Murayama was a talented Japanese artist who initially worked for the National Geographic magazine; his figurative watercolours were ideal for portraying the wonders of nature. Later, he collaborated with George Papanicolaou in Cornell University as he was able to improve on the microphotography of the era; an era in which it was not yet understood why cervical cancer caused so many deaths. His illustrations captured the most intricate cellular details and his artistic legacy will always be enlightening in each display of cellular artistry as seen under the microscope.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In the sixth edition of the World Health Organization manual for the examination and processing of human semen, extended examination methods to provide key diagnostics in the investigation of the male reproductive system function are elaborated. These go beyond the basic analysis of semen and may be useful in more specifically guiding the clinical characterization of fertile or infertile men. Among the extended examinations included in the chapter, the use of multiparametric scoring for sperm morphological defects, sperm DNA fragmentation, and the roles for computer-assisted analysis of sperm or semen are arguably those that will be the most widely used and may also cause the most debate.

ABSTRACT

A basic semen investigation has established principles that are necessary for ascertaining reliable and internationally comparable results. Although these principles have been present in the WHO manual since its inception, the baseline issue across most published studies and practice in reproductive medicine (in which the male is considered) is repetitive failure to adhere to these principles, thereby leading to relevant comparable data and accuracy. To address this failure, the sixth edition of the WHO manual includes revised basic methods, and a complementary formal standard of the International Standards Organization (ISO23162:2021) for basic semen examination has been published. Perhaps the most significant change in the sixth edition is the reintroduction of the four-category distinction of sperm motility, which causes additional work for laboratories in changing reporting parameters but is clinically important. Another essential change is the widened focus from mainly a prognostic tool for medically assisted reproduction to additionally raising awareness of semen examination as a measure of male reproductive functions and general male health.

ABSTRACT

As stated clearly in all editions of the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, the goal of the manual is to meet the growing needs for the standardization of semen analysis procedures. With constant advances in andrology and reproductive medicine and the advent of sophisticated assisted reproductive technologies for the treatment of infertility, the manual has been continuously updated to meet the need for new, evidence-based, validated tests to not only measure semen and sperm variables but also to provide a functional assessment of spermatozoa. The sixth edition of the WHO manual, launched in 2021, can be freely downloaded from the WHO website, with the hope of gaining wide acceptance and utilization as the essential source of the latest, evidence-based information for laboratory procedures required for the assessment of male reproductive function and health.
