PURPOSE: In previous studies, magnesium (Mg) was found to be lower in cases with more severe primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and higher calcium (Ca) levels. This study evaluated the relationship between serum Mg and serum Ca and phosphorus (P) levels in PHPT and their utility in determining the presence of osteoporosis and nephrolithiasis. METHODS: Patients who were followed up with PHPT between March 2019 and March 2023 were analyzed retrospectively. Biochemical data, renal ultrasonography results, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) reports, and technetium 99 m sestamibi parathyroid scintigraphy reports were obtained. MgxP, Mg/P, Ca/P, and corrected Ca (cCa)/P values were calculated. The relationships between biochemical parameters and clinical outcomes were evaluated statistically. RESULTS: A total of 543 patients were included in the study. Patients with nephrolithiasis had higher cCa/Mg or Ca/Mg than those without nephrolithiasis. Additionally, ROC analysis revealed that cCa/Mg greater than 5.24 could identify the presence of nephrolithiasis with a sensitivity of 73.3% and a specificity of 73%. No statistically significant correlation existed between the results of the Mg/P, MgxP, cCa/Mg, Ca/Mg values, and DEXA-bone mineral densitometry(BMD). CONCLUSION: Ca/Mg and cCa/Mg ratios in particular seem more valuable in determining the presence of nephrolithiasis than the currently used 24-h urine Ca measurement. Compared to urinary Ca measurements, they are cheaper, more practical, and more accessible.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare fresh and frozen-thawed euploid blastocyst transfer protocols following preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) in cases of advanced maternal age. METHODS: A total of 330 patients were examined retrospectively. PGS was performed on the embryos of 146 patients for whom fresh transfers were chosen. In contrast, frozen-thawed euploid single embryo transfer (ET) was selected after PGS for 184 patients, and their embryos were vitrified. The percentage of euploid embryos and rates of implantation, pregnancy, and pregnancy continuity, as well as clinical and biochemical abortion rates, were compared. RESULTS: The numbers of retrieved oocytes, metaphase II oocytes, and fertilized ova were greater in the frozen-thawed group. The percentages of euploid embryos were comparable between the fresh and frozen-thawed groups (32% vs. 34.8%, respectively). The rates of implantation (46.6%vs. 62.5%), pregnancy (50% vs. 66.8%), ongoing pregnancy (38.4% vs. 53.8%), and live birth percentage (37.0% vs. 53.8%) were significantly higher in the frozen-thawed group. However, no significant differences were found in the clinical and biochemical abortion rates. CONCLUSION: The use of frozen-thawed single euploid ET is associated with increased implantation and pregnancy rates compared to fresh single euploid ET with PGS.

For the survival and maintenance of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), axonal transportation is fundamental. Axonal transportation defects can cause severe neuropathies leading to neuronal loss. Axonal transport defects usually precede axonal degeneration and RGC loss in disease models. To date, the main causes of axonal transport defects have not been fully understood. Therefore, elucidation of the mechanisms that lead to transport defects will help us to develop novel therapeutic targets and early diagnostic tools. In this review, we provide an overview of optic neuropathies and axonal degeneration with a focus on axonal transport.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to examine the experiences and perceived challenges of nurses who are also mothers having a child during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological design. The study was conducted with 18 nurse mothers working at COVID-19 clinics in Turkey. RESULTS: Nurse mothers missed their children and are worried about infecting their children. Based on content analysis, the themes of the study were determined as follows: (1) Nursing Care Process, (2) Disruption of Family Processes, (3) Nurse Mother's Perspective: Being a Child in a Pandemic, and (4) Coping with Challenges-"Searching for a solution." CONCLUSIONS: Necessary conditions should be provided for nurses with children or family members in need of care and protocols should be made with relevant institutions.


What is already known on the subject? Nurses working in COVID-19 units wear protective equipment and work for a long time under difficult conditions. In addition, nurses who have children are separated from their children because of the fear of transmitting COVID-19.What does this study add? Therefore, nurses caring for COVID-19 patients should alternately be replaced by nurses working in other services. They should be given the opportunity to rest and spend time with their loved ones if they are not carriers of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the incidence and characteristics of newborns with subconjunctival hemorrhage (SCH). METHODS: In our study, patient files of term infants referred to the study hospital's ophthalmology clinic in 2018-19 were analyzed. Demographic data of infants including gestational week, birth weight, gender, and head circumference were all recorded. The frequency of SCH detection was evaluated depending on delivery type. Demographic data of infants with and without retinal hemorrhage (RH) were compared. RESULTS: A total of 172 eyes of 86 infants were included in study. Forty-two (48.8%) of 86 neonates were male, and 44 (51.2%) were female. Mean gestational week was 38.62±1.1. SCH was detected in 31.4% (27) in the right eye, 36% (31) in the left eye, and 32.6% (28) in both eyes. The diagnosis was made at the mean of 3.74 days (range 1-20). Mean birth weight was found as 3621.1±453.3 g, head circumference as 35.4±1.3 cm, height as 50.7±2 cm, and chest circumference as 33.6±1.4 cm. Mean Apgar score in 1st min was 7.1±0.4; 5th min was 9. About 11.6% (10) of the mothers were nulliparous, and 88.4% (76) were multiparous. It was found that 79 of the deliveries were vaginal and seven with cesarean section. RH was not detected in any of the infants born with cesarean section. CONCLUSION: SCH and RH were more common in infants born vaginally. If SCH is detected, a fundus examination should be performed to not miss possible RH.

BACKGROUND: Cell homeostasis relies on the concerted actions of genes, and dysregulated genes can lead to diseases. In living organisms, genes or their products do not act alone but within networks. Subsets of these networks can be viewed as modules that provide specific functionality to an organism. The Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) systematically analyzes gene functions, proteins, and molecules and combines them into pathways. Measurements of gene expression (e.g., RNA-seq data) can be mapped to KEGG pathways to determine which modules are affected or dysregulated in the disease. However, genes acting in multiple pathways and other inherent issues complicate such analyses. Many current approaches may only employ gene expression data and need to pay more attention to some of the existing knowledge stored in KEGG pathways for detecting dysregulated pathways. New methods that consider more precompiled information are required for a more holistic association between gene expression and diseases. RESULTS: PriPath is a novel approach that transfers the generic process of grouping and scoring, followed by modeling to analyze gene expression with KEGG pathways. In PriPath, KEGG pathways are utilized as the grouping function as part of a machine learning algorithm for selecting the most significant KEGG pathways. A machine learning model is trained to differentiate between diseases and controls using those groups. We have tested PriPath on 13 gene expression datasets of various cancers and other diseases. Our proposed approach successfully assigned biologically and clinically relevant KEGG terms to the samples based on the differentially expressed genes. We have comparatively evaluated the performance of PriPath against other tools, which are similar in their merit. For each dataset, we manually confirmed the top results of PriPath in the literature and found that most predictions can be supported by previous experimental research. CONCLUSIONS: PriPath can thus aid in determining dysregulated pathways, which applies to medical diagnostics. In the future, we aim to advance this approach so that it can perform patient stratification based on gene expression and identify druggable targets. Thereby, we cover two aspects of precision medicine.

Stroke is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality. The present study investigated how the systemic immune inflammation index (SII) could be used to predict the likelihood of developing carotid artery stenosis (CAS), which can be seen using carotid artery angiography (CAAG). This study comprised 418 individuals who underwent CAAG for CAS. SII was calculated by multiplying the platelet count by the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The patients were divided into two groups: non-critical and critical CAS (stenosis below %70 and above ≥70%, respectively). Compared with the non-critical CAS, the critical CAS group had greater high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (4.5 [3.1-5.7] vs 3.9 [2-5] [mg/L], P < .001), NLR (4.1 [2.9-7.5] vs 2.9 [1.8-3.7], P < .001), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (233 [110-297] vs 119 [96-197], P < .001), and SII (860 [608-2455] vs 604 [458-740], P < .001). Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve analysis demonstrated the best cutoff value of 672.3 for SII to predict the critical CAS with 71.2% sensitivity and 60.1% specificity. According to our study, an increase in SII is an independent predictor of the severity of CAS in patients undergoing CAAG.

Gene editing and gene regulatory fields are continuously developing new and safer tools that move beyond the initial CRISPR/Cas9 technology. As more advanced applications are emerging, it becomes crucial to understand and establish more complex gene regulatory and editing tools for efficient gene therapy applications. Ophthalmology is one of the leading fields in gene therapy applications with more than 90 clinical trials and numerous proof-of-concept studies. The majority of clinical trials are gene replacement therapies that are ideal for monogenic diseases. Despite Luxturna's clinical success, there are still several limitations to gene replacement therapies including the size of the target gene, the choice of the promoter as well as the pathogenic alleles. Therefore, further attempts to employ novel gene regulatory and gene editing applications are crucial to targeting retinal diseases that have not been possible with the existing approaches. CRISPR-Cas9 technology opened up the door for corrective gene therapies with its gene editing properties. Advancements in CRISPR-Cas9-associated tools including base modifiers and prime editing already improved the efficiency and safety profile of base editing approaches. While base editing is a highly promising effort, gene regulatory approaches that do not interfere with genomic changes are also becoming available as safer alternatives. Antisense oligonucleotides are one of the most commonly used approaches for correcting splicing defects or eliminating mutant mRNA. More complex gene regulatory methodologies like artificial transcription factors are also another developing field that allows targeting haploinsufficiency conditions, functionally equivalent genes, and multiplex gene regulation. In this review, we summarized the novel gene editing and gene regulatory technologies and highlighted recent translational progress, potential applications, and limitations with a focus on retinal diseases.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of mutations by comparing wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and Omicron regarding clinical features in patients with COVID-19. It also aimed to assess whether SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold value could predict COVID-19 severity. METHODS: A total of 960 wild-type and 411 Omicron variant patients with positive results in SARS-CoV-2 real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction test from oropharyngeal and/or nasopharyngeal samples during their hospital admissions were included in this retrospective study. The reference symptoms of the patients were obtained from the hospital database. The correlation between chest computed tomography findings and the "cycle threshold" of patients with wild-type SARS-CoV-2 was assessed. RESULTS: Cough, fever, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell, and diarrhea were found to be statistically significantly higher (p=0.001; 0.001; 0.001; 0.001; and 0.006; respectively) in the wild-type cohort, while in the Omicron cohort, sore throat and headache were found to be statistically significantly higher (p=0.001 and 0.003, respectively). An inverse relationship was found between chest computed tomography findings and viral load. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that the Omicron variant tended to infect predominantly the upper respiratory tract and showed decreased lung infectivity, and the disease progressed with a milder clinical course. Therefore, the study showed that the tropism of the virus was changed and the viral phenotype was affected. It was also found that SARS-CoV-2 viral load did not predict COVID-19 severity in patients with wild-type SARS-CoV-2.

Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is used to provide analgesia after lower abdominal surgery operations. TAP block has been shown to reduce postoperative pain scores and side effects of opioids after cesarean section. Generally, TAP block was introduced after cesarean section. It is assumed that delivery affects sonographic characteristics of the abdominal wall. For this reason, ultrasonographic measurement of the anatomy of the region defined for TAP block was performed before and after cesarean section. It was aimed to determine the estimated TAP block distance in the population undergoing cesarean section. Fifty patients who underwent cesarean section in the operating room were included in the study. The inclusion criteria were ASA score I-II, age 18-45 years, gestational age ≥32 weeks, and cesarean section performed by Pfannenstiel incision. Data on patient age, weight, height, body mass index, gravidity, parity, gestational age (weeks), concomitant disease and allergy were recorded. According to the results obtained in the study, ultrasound should be performed if TAP block is accessible. Before cesarean section, the external oblique muscle and internal oblique muscle are closer to surface than after cesarean section since the TAP distance after pregnancy will be deeper. Systematic data on ultrasonographic anatomy of the abdominal wall in pregnant women have not yet been published. The obstetric anesthesiologist should be aware of these changes when planning a TAP block in the context of cesarean section. There is a need for larger prospective studies.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal steroid administrations lead to not only accelerated lung maturation, improved blood gas measurements but also lung dynamics and lung compliance. This study aimed to investigate structural and functional changes in diaphragm after antenatal steroid administration. METHODS: The 79 volunteers were divided into 2 groups according to presence of preterm delivery. Betamethasone (CelestoneR) 12 mg intramuscularly was routinely administered to pregnancies complicated with preterm delivery between 28th -34th weeks of gestation. Same dose was repeated 24 h later. In all patients, diaphragm thickness, diaphragmatic excursion and costophrenic angle were measured in both the inspirium and expirium stage of respiration. This is an observational cross-sectional study. RESULTS: Diaphragm thickness, diaphragmatic excursion and diaphragm thickening fraction parameters were improved but costophrenic angle was not different 7 days after steroid administration. Diaphragm thickness, diaphragmatic excursion and costophrenic angle changes during inspiration and expiration stage after 7 days of betamethasone treatment reflects the effect of steroid administration on diaphragm muscle. Comparisons of the differences that occur after steroid rescue protocol were done by subtracting the diaphragm thickness, diaphragmatic excursion and costophrenic angle parameters before the treatment from the diaphragm thickness, diaphragmatic excursion and costophrenic angle parameters 7 days after steroid treatment respectively. CONCLUSION: Diaphragm became more mobile in patients with preterm labor, 7 days after steroid administration. This situation reflects positive effect of steroid administration on diaphragm function.

The aim of this study was to assess the utility of shear wave elastography in the follow-up of testicular detorsion, evaluate long-term outcomes, and explore its relationship with parameters such as tissue stiffness values, pain duration, and torsion type. Elastography examinations were independently performed by two radiologists to evaluate patients who presented to our hospital for follow-up after being diagnosed with testicular torsion and age-matched controls. Inter-observer variability of the mean testicular tissue elasticity was excellent (Intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.939, p < 0.001). Median time between testicular detorsion and follow-up ultrasound examination was 18 months (range, 11-36 months). Torsion side, torsion degree, and pain duration were recorded, and testicular volumes were calculated. The study population comprised 24 patients (48 testes) with a mean age of 21.1 ± 7.8 years. The mean testicular volume was measured as 12.3 ± 5.4 ml for the testicular salvage group, 13.9 ± 3.8 ml for the contralateral testes, and 13.7 ± 2.7 ml for the control group (p = 0.553). The mean testicular speed mode values were higher in the testicular salvage group (1.34 ± 1.21 m/s) compared with the contralateral testes group (1.00 ± 0.08 m/s), and the control group (1.01 ± 0.06 m/s), however there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups (p = 0.861). While testicular atrophy was detected in three patients, an intraparenchymal wedge-shaped focal hypoechoic area developed after torsion in a further three patients. The elastography examination for focal hypoechoic areas revealed an increase or decrease in tissue stiffness compared to the normal parenchyma. The tissue stiffness values of the testicular salvage group were higher in complete torsion compared to incomplete torsion. The elastography method contributes to other imaging methods in distinguishing focal lesion areas that can be seen after testicular torsion from malignant conditions. Elastography presents as a feasible and practical complementary modality for the follow-up of testicular salvage after torsion.

BACKGROUND: Both pre-gestational (PGDM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) make pregnancy complicated. Moreover in the literature GDM and PGDM have been held responsible for respiratory morbidity in newborns. Diaphragm ultrasound (DUS) is a valuable and noninvasive method that provides an opportunity to examine the diaphragmatic morphology and function. This study examined the quality of fetal diaphragmatic contractions in pregnant women complicated with GDM and PGDM. METHODS: A total of 105 volunteers who were separated into three groups; (1) A GDM group (n = 35), (2) a PGDM group (n = 35), and (3) a healthy non-diabetic control group (n = 35). All volunteers with the cephalic presentation and only male fetuses were examined in the 37th week of gestation. This cross sectional and case controlled study was performed at the perinatology clinic of the Erciyes University School of Medicine between 15.01.2020 and 01.08.2021. The thickness of fetal diaphragm (DT), diaphragmatic excursion (DE), diaphragm thickening fraction (DTF) and costodiaphragmatic angle (CDA) was measured and recorded by ultrasound and examined on the video frame during the inspiration and expiration phases of respiration. RESULTS: Especially the PGDM group represented adversely affected diaphragm function parameters. DT inspiration, DT expiration, DE, CDA inspiration and DTF values were significantly different between PGDM and the control group. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission was high among babies who were born to pregnancies complicated with PGDM or GDM. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of fetal diaphragm movements is affected in pregnancies complicated with GDM and PGDM. The prolonged duration of diabetes may have additional adverse effects on diaphragm morphology and its function.


The percentage of pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) in pregnancy is 13­21% and the remaining part of diabetes is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Both of the complications are related to respiratory problems at birth.Until now, it was known that this situation was due to the lack of surfactant, which has a facilitating effect on the participation of the lungs in respiration. However, in this study, the diaphragm of the babies of patients with PGDM and GDM was examined. The thickness of fetal diaphragm, movements and function were evaluated via using ultrasound. As a result, it was determined that the diaphragm movements were impaired and the babies born from these patients needed more pediatric care.This study will open horizon on new studies examining the functional capacity of the diaphragm in the future. In the future, it may be possible to decide which baby will need intensive care by examining the diaphragm.

Background: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been used in acute pulmonary thromboembolism as an alternative to warfarin due to drug interactions, narrow therapeutic range, and necessary close International Normalized Ratio (INR) monitoring. Phase 3 study results have reported that these drugs are at least as effective as warfarin and beneficial in terms of bleeding; however, studies that present up-to-date life data are necessary. Aims: To evaluate the frequency of using DOACs, which are prescribed with a limited number of indications in our country, and real-life data results. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: This cross-sectional survey collected the clinical data (history, current treatment, treatment duration, etc.) of patients with pulmonary thromboembolism and who applied to the physician for follow-up between October 15, 2019, and March 15, 2020. The researchers kept the patient records sequentially. Results: Data from 836 patients with acute pulmonary thromboembolism from 25 centers were collected, and DOAC was used in 320 (38.5%) of them. The most preferred DOAC was rivaroxaban (n = 294, 91.9%). DOAC was mostly preferred because it could not provide an effective INR level with warfarin (n=133, 41.6%). Bleeding was observed in 13 (4%) patients. Conclusion: The use of direct oral anticoagulants is becoming almost as widespread as conventional therapy. Real-life data results are important for their contribution to clinical practice.

This present study aims to determine the lowest concentration effects of the assayed different antibiotics; antimicrobial agents alone and their combinations with nisin were investigated to prevent the biofilm formation and break down the biofilm structure of Salmonella. While the combination of nisin and EDTA showed a synergistic effect against Salmonella strain, chlorhexidine digluconate and streptomycin with nisin showed a partial synergetic effect; citric acid and sulfonamides with nisin showed an indifferent effect. The use of citric acid and chlorhexidine digluconate alone was very effective in Salmonella inhibition. While the citric acid combined with other agents had not much effect, the use of chlorhexidine digluconate combined with nisin and EDTA inactivated the total initial count within 24 h. Significantly, when citric acid and sulfonamides are used alone, they reduce by 64% and 44%, respectively. When they used nisin + EDTA, this ratio increased to 83% and 84%, respectively. For the prevention of biofilm, the most suitable conditions were determined as 97% biofilm inhibition. The results of this study can be used as a guide for the emergence of new approaches to ensure the food safety and quality of the food industry.

OBJECTIVE: The ductus venosus, a small blood vessel in the fetal venous system, has extraordinary physiologic significance because it connects the umbilical vein to the inferior vena cava in the fetus circulation system and transports highly oxygenated blood from the placenta to the fetus' heart. Hence, assessment of ductus venosus flows is helpful in evaluating fetal hemodynamics. Considering the critical function of the ductus venosus, we hypothesized that the diameter of the midtrimester ductus venosus and its peak velocity index can be related to adequate fetal growth; therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the midtrimester umbilical venous blood flow, ductus venosus diameter, and ductus venosus peak systolic velocity to help predict uncomplicated deliveries of late onset small for gestational age (SGA) fetuses. METHODS: In this prospective study we analyzed the pregnancies and deliveries of 398 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and divided them into three groups according to fetal birth weight as follows: birth weight <3 percentile SGA group (n = 16), birth weight 3-10 percentile SGA group (n = 42), and appropriate for the gestational age (AGA) group (n = 340). The midtrimester ductus venosus diameter and peak sistolic velocity, umbilical venous blood flow, and umbilical artery pulsatility index (PI) were recorded. In the absence of congenital anomalies, the diagnosis of fetal growth restriction (FGR) is made according to Delphi consensus criteria. In the absence of abnormal Doppler findings, late FGR was defined as occurring ≥32 weeks. RESULTS: Maternal age, nulliparity, mean gestational age at ultrasound evaluation, ethnicity, body mass index, and previous cesarean delivery rates were similar among the groups. In addition, mid-trimester fetal biometric measurements and amniotic fluid volume were similar among the groups. The gestational age at delivery, prematurity, fetal birth weight, vaginal delivery rates, and rate of admission to the neonatal intensive care unit were significantly different among the groups. The mean mid-trimester umbilical vein blood flow to abdominal circumference ratio (UVBF/AC) was similar among the groups (p=.740). In the <3 group, the mean peak systolic velocity of the ductus venosus was significantly lower and the mean diameter of the ductus venosus significantly higher than those in the 3-10 and AGA groups (both p<.001). Although the values are below the 95th percentile mid-trimester umbilical artery PI was significantly higher in the <3 percentile SGA group than in the 3-10 percentile SGA and AGA groups. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the diameter and peak systolic velocity of the mid-trimester ductus venosus are useful noninvasive measurements that provide prediction of late onset SGA fetuses.

The effects of the bcsE gene and BcsE protein on bacterial physiology and pathogenicity in SalmonellaTyphimurium and Salmonella Group C1 were investigated. It was observed that biofilm and pellicle formation did not occur in the bcsE gene mutants of wild-type strains. Besides, the 'rdar' (red, dry, rough) biofilm morphotype in wild-type strains changed significantly in the mutants. In terms of the bcsE gene, the swimming and swarming motility in mutant strains showed a dramatic increase compared to the wild-type strains. The Salmonella bcsE gene was cloned into Escherichia coli BL21, and the his-tagged protein produced in this strain was purified to obtain polyclonal antibodies in BALB/c mice. The antibodies were showed labeled antigen specificity to the BscE protein. As a result of immunization and systemic persistence tests carried out with BALB/c mice, BscE protein was determined to trigger high levels of humoral and cellular responses (Th1 cytokine production, IgG2a/IgG1 > 1). Systemic persistence in the liver and spleen samples decreased by 99.99% and 100% in the bcsE mutant strains. Finally, invasion abilities on HT-29 epithelial cells of wild-type strains were utterly disappeared in their bcsE gene mutant strains.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this trial was to appraise the effects of preeclampsia and its intensity on maternal serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels during pregnancy and the post-pregnancy period. STUDY DESIGN: Firstly pregnant participants (n = 156) were separated into three groups, as control, mild, and severe preeclampsia. Secondly women in post-pregnancy period (n = 368) were separated into three groups according to history of pregnancy, as healthy control, mild, and severe preeclampsia. These women were identified through the hospital data system and contacted by telephone to participate in the study. RESULTS: Our study comprised 147 patients, 77 of whom were pregnant and 70 of whom were in their post-pregnancy period after the exclusion criteria had been applied. In terms of maternal serum NGAL levels, there is a significant increase in the severe preeclampsia group compared with that in the mild preeclampsia and normal pregnancy groups (p < 0.001). During the post-pregnancy period, the maternal serum NGAL levels were found significantly higher in the severe preeclampsia group than in the mild preeclampsia group and non-hypertension control group (p < 0.001). Maternal serum KIM-1 levels were found as significantly higher in the severe and mild preeclampsia groups than in the non-hypertension pregnancy group (p = 0.004). During the post-pregnancy period, maternal serum KIM-1 levels were found as similar among all post pregnant groups (p = 0.792). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that as the severity of preeclampsia increases, kidney damage as assessed using NGAL levels continues for a long period of time, even during the post-pregnancy period.
