RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Understanding the stressors and coping strategies of nursing students in their first clinical training is important for improving student performance, helping students develop a professional identity and problem-solving skills, and improving the clinical teaching aspects of the curriculum in nursing programmes. While previous research have examined nurses' sources of stress and coping styles in the Arab region, there is limited understanding of these stressors and coping strategies of nursing students within the UAE context thereby, highlighting the novelty and significance of the study. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Overall 30 students who were undergoing their first clinical placement in Year 2 at the University of Sharjah between May and June 2022 were recruited. All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed for themes. RESULTS: During their first clinical training, nursing students are exposed to stress from different sources, including the clinical environment, unfriendly clinical tutors, feelings of disconnection, multiple expectations of clinical staff and patients, and gaps between the curriculum of theory classes and labatories skills and students' clinical experiences. We extracted three main themes that described students' stress and use of coping strategies during clinical training: (1) managing expectations; (2) theory-practice gap; and (3) learning to cope. Learning to cope, included two subthemes: positive coping strategies and negative coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS: This qualitative study sheds light from the students viewpoint about the intricate interplay between managing expectations, theory practice gap and learning to cope. Therefore, it is imperative for nursing faculty, clinical agencies and curriculum planners to ensure maximum learning in the clinical by recognizing the significance of the stressors encountered and help students develop positive coping strategies to manage the clinical stressors encountered. Further research is required look at the perspective of clinical stressors from clinical tutors who supervise students during their first clinical practicum.

RESUMEN

Background: This study sought to capture the perspectives and experiences of two sub-groups of military veterans, namely those who had previously been identified as offenders and those employed as practitioners within the criminal justice system in the United Kingdom. Methods: The lead author undertook narrative inquiry in the form of life story research. The life stories of 17 in-depth interviews were conducted across England and Wales, allowing for insight into the lived experiences of two life story trajectories of the health of military veterans. Existing literature on salutogenesis, health, post-traumatic growth, and positive deviance has also been investigated. Results: Life story interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed concurrently using thematic analysis to identify emergent themes. The researchers used thematic analysis as an analytical framework to allow descriptive themes from the literature on salutogenesis, health, post-traumatic, and positive deviance to be compared with those of life-story interviews. Conclusion: The study adopts a salutogenic approach, which suggests that an important indicator for a sense of coherence is enabled through the positive utilization of resilience through the reconstruction of military identity and experience. Notably, the concept of salutogenesis demonstrates the ability to draw from internal and external resources as circumstances require, to survive, and because of this, the participants' health is maintained or improved. Hence, adaptation was notable through the coherence identified by the identity of being a veteran noted between the two subgroups and represents a continuous and dynamic process. The study suggests that the development of a sense of coherence is not restricted to the early decades of life but is a continuous process as contexts, personal circumstances, and opportunities arise. This later point is realized through the presence of post-traumatic growth and positive deviance, as they aid in the nurturing and development of a renewed sense of coherence via the known identity of military service and life.

RESUMEN

AIM: This study explored undergraduate nursing students' mentoring experiences during their final clinical practicum as they prepared to enter the workforce. METHODS: We used a qualitative case study design with data collected in two focus group discussions involving 19 students. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Students' descriptions of their mentoring experiences fell under three themes: 'great experience', 'being treated like part of the family', and 'gaining confidence and skills'. Students described their mentors as having critical roles in providing feedback and learning opportunities to interns. Students also reported that ungraded initial assessment, friendlier workplaces, and mentors with patience were required to strengthen their professional learning at the workplace. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that prompt and constructive feedback, warmer workplace environments, and passionate mentors' involvement may help enhance students' mentoring experiences during their clinical practicum. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Management and academia should work jointly to develop mentorship programs to achieve better student outcomes. Doing this will lead to role clarity, higher levels of satisfaction, and increased productivity. Management needs to consider compensating mentors for their time in student learning and select experienced nurses willing to mentor others to promote enjoyable relationships and effective mentoring engagements. Management needs to find creative ways to build mentoring into appraisals, for at present, it is considered a voluntary activity for educating the next generation of nurses. Management should ensure adequate training and ongoing support for mentors and mentees in clinical mentoring.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Limited information is known from studies regarding traditional, religious, and cultural perspectives on mental illness and the use of traditional and alternative therapies by mentally ill people in Indonesia. This study explored traditional, religious, and cultural beliefs about causes of mental illness and the use of traditional/alternative treatments for mentally ill patients. METHOD: We adopted a qualitative content analysis method as proposed by Schreier. This study was conducted at a mental Hospital in Indonesia. We interviewed 15 nurses and 15 patients. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis method. RESULTS: Five discrete but interrelated themes emerged: 1) Possessed illness and belief in supernatural forces; 2) Sinful or cursed illness; 3) Witchcraft or human-made illness; 4) traditional/alternative treatments; and 5) Barriers to treatment of mental illness. CONCLUSION: Traditional/alternative treatments play an important role in meeting the need for mental health treatment. The findings are relevant for mental health nurses who provide direct to their patients, and for other areas of mental health practice. We also found a lack of knowledge about the causes of mental illness among patients and families. Education should be at the heart of mental health promotion to raise the level of mental health literacy in Indonesia.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Nursing is a rapidly growing profession that has traditionally been dominated by women. Research has highlighted various challenges associated with increasing the number of male nurses, such as cultural challenges and stigma related to nursing. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced an increase in male students enrolling in nursing programs. To ensure this is sustainable, it is important to understand how male students perceive nursing and clarify factors that influence their decision to choose nursing as a career. OBJECTIVES: To explore male nursing students' perspectives of the nursing profession and understand why they chose nursing as a career. METHODS: Participants in this qualitative analysis were 30 male students that were selected using purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data about participants' experiences. We used a qualitative content analysis to guide the data analysis. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified that described male students' perspectives of and reasons for choosing nursing: (1) perceptions of nurses and nursing profession; (2) individuals as facilitators or role models in choosing the nursing profession; and (3) barriers to choosing the nursing profession. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Our results regarding barriers and facilitators for male students in choosing to study nursing may be useful to help improve the recruitment of and learning opportunities for male nursing students. Highlighting the male presence in the nursing profession and positive male role models may encourage males to enter the profession. Therefore, understanding the experiences of male nursing students in choosing nursing as a career has important implications for nursing practice and education.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Stigma refers to the discrediting, devaluing, and shaming of a person because of characteristics or attributes that they possess. Generally, stigma leads to negative social experiences such as isolation, rejection, marginalization, and discrimination. If related to a health condition such as mental illness, stigma may affect a person's illness and treatment course, including access to appropriate and professional medical treatment. Stigma has also been reported to affect patients' families or relatives, along with professionals who work in mental healthcare settings. Stigma is strongly influenced by cultural and contextual value systems that differ over time and across contexts. However, limited information is available on how types of stigma are experienced by patients with mental illness and mental health nurses in Indonesia. METHOD: We explored the stigma-related experiences of 15 nurses and 15 patients in Indonesia. The study design and analysis of interview data were guided by deductive (directed) content analysis. RESULTS: Five themes emerged. Four themes were patient-related: personal/patients' stigma, public/social stigma, family stigma, and employment stigma. The fifth theme related to stigma toward healthcare professionals working with patients with mental illnesses, which we categorized as professional stigma. CONCLUSIONS: This study has achieved a deep understanding of the concept of stigma in the Indonesian context. This understanding is a prerequisite for developing appropriate interventions that address this phenomenon and thereby for the development of mental health services in Indonesia. This study may also be transferable to other countries that share similar cultural backgrounds and adhere to traditional and religious value systems.

RESUMEN

Neuroblastoma is a common cancer in children especially those under 5-years old, however they can have varied presentations that may make diagnosis difficult. Neuroblastoma is not usually high on a clinician's differential for a child's gait dysfunction. We describe a case of a 6-year-old female who presented to the Emergency Department for new onset right hip pain. She had associated gait disturbance and pain with ambulation as well as a new lump on her right parietal skull. An MRI of the brain, lumbar spine, and pelvis revealed the diagnosis of a left adrenal neuroblastoma that had metastasized to the femur, the lumbar spine, and the skull. This case shows the importance of early suspicion of malignancy in a patient with seemingly disparate symptoms to ensure early intervention.

RESUMEN

AIM: Oxidative stress (OS) plays a major role in pathogenic mechanisms associated with metabolic syndrome (Mets) yet the main component of Mets contributing most to OS is not well elucidated. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the oxidative-antioxidative status in Mets subjects and to determine the main predicting component of OS. METHODS: Anthropometric measures, fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, antioxidant enzymes [catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)], reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl were assessed in 172 adult UAE residents. International Diabetes Federation criteria were used for Mets diagnosis. Mets Scores (0-5) were calculated and assigned per subject based on number of components. RESULTS: Of all participants, 22.1% had Mets and 49.4% had large waist circumference (WC). Significant lower levels of catalase, SOD, GPx and GSH, and higher levels of MDA and protein carbonyl were observed in subjects with Mets. In addition, catalase, SOD, GPx, and GSH correlated negatively, while MDA and protein carbonyl correlated positively with almost all Mets components. Similar trend of correlations was noticed with Mets Scores. When adjusted for age and gender, linear regression analysis revealed that subjects with large WC demonstrated significantly lower levels of antioxidative enzymes and GSH, and higher levels of MDA and protein carbonyl. Consequently, WC emerged as the best predictor of OS. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of OS is dependent on the Mets Scores, and WC contributes independently to increased OS among adults in UAE.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Women, during the antenatal and post-partum period, report pelvic, low back pain, stress and urge urinary incontinence, colorectal dysfunction, and other co-morbidities that negatively affect health-related quality of life. Exercise and nutrition are important considerations for improving maternal health in this period. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a community-driven nutrition and exercise programme focused on pelvic floor and core stability, healthy nutrition, and breastfeeding counselling over an 8-week period on pelvic floor and urinary distress (UDI), prolapse and colorectal distress for antenatal and post-partum women with limited access to health care, and low socio-economic resources from a Midwestern Region of the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Purposive sample of 35 females, ages 18-44, were recruited for this prospective, preintervention to postintervention study, following ethical approval from Institutional Review Board and voluntary written consent from participants. The Health History Questionnaire, SF-36, Food Frequency Questionnaire, report of pelvic organ prolapse dysfunction (POPDI), colorectal-anal dysfunction (CRADI), and UDI as measured by the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI) were completed before and after intervention. RESULTS: Thirty-five women (n = 35) 18 to 44 years old (mean age of 22.72 ± 3.45 years) completed the study. A significant difference was found from preintervention to postintervention scores means for PFDI total scores, CRADI individual scores, and UDI individual scores (p < .05). POPDI scores decreased preintervention to postintervention but were not significant. A significant improvement in healthy nutrition and breastfeeding postintervention was also found (z = 3.21, p = .001). Further analysis showed significant, but weak, correlation between parity and POPDI (r = .366, p = .033); between parity and UDI (r = .384, p = .03); and between parity and PFDI (r = .419, p = .014). DISCUSSION: Our study found a significant reduction in pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary, and colorectal-anal distress symptoms and improvement in breastfeeding and healthy nutrition following an 8-week community-driven nutrition and exercise programme focused on pelvic floor and core stability, healthy nutrition, and breastfeeding counselling.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren's disease of the hand is characterized by progressive thickening and shortening of palmar fascia resulting in flexion deformities of the digits and hence limitation of hand function. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of shock-wave therapy on patients with Dupuytren's disease of the hand. CASE REPORT: A case series study observed a total of four patients with Dupuytren's disease of the hand. All 4 patients had diabetes. Three patients had bilateral hand involvement. Two patients had flexion deformity. High-energy focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy was applied using a Storz Duolith SD1 (2000 impulses, 3 Hz, 1.24 mJ/mm2) in 5 sessions with 7 days between. Outcome measured included pain score, tender score, hand grip, and nodule size from the Michigan Hand Outcome Questionnaire, JAMAR hand held dynamometer, and ultrasonography. Data was collected at the entry and conclusion of the study at 0 and 8 weeks. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Significant statistical improvement was observed for pain score 8.7±0.5 vs. 2.0±0.9, P<0.001 and for tender score 8.5±0.5 vs. 2.5±0.9, P<0.009 after the therapy. Decrease in size of nodules with improvement of flexion deformity was observed in one patient who had multiple bilateral nodules. No adverse effects were noted. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy was beneficial in relieving symptoms in Dupuytren's disease of the hand.

RESUMEN

AIM: To determine the prevalence of joint hypermobility (JH) among young Kuwaiti adults. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 390 randomly selected healthy undergraduate university students, aged 18-29 years from the Health Sciences Centre, Kuwait University, Safat, Kuwait. Beighton score at four peripheral sites bilaterally (knees, elbows, thumbs and fifth fingers) and forward flexion of the trunk were used to evaluate joint hypermobility. Any student who met four out of the nine criteria was considered hypermobile. Joint pain was documented in all subjects through personal interview. RESULTS: A total of 390 subjects (male : female ratio 1.0 : 0.9) were assessed. Of those, 87 (22.3%) were found to have JH: 60 (29.4%) males and 27 (14.5%) females, showing a significantly higher male predominance (P < 0.001). Beighton score was inversely correlated with age (ρ = -0.15, P = 0.003). A higher incidence of finger signs was noted in comparison to elbow-knee hyperextension and hands-to-floor. Knee joint, back, neck and shoulder pains, in descending order, were the commonest type of joint complaints, although not statistically significant (P > 0.05) in subjects with and without joint hypermobility. It was also observed that the left side, at all the sites, was slightly more hypermobile in comparison to the right side in hypermobile subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of joint hypermobility is not uncommon among young Kuwaiti adults, and was comparable to the data published in other Asian-Pacific regions. General practitioners should therefore be familiar with the condition and its clinical associations, while assessing musculoskeletal complaints.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not radiographic changes observed in knee osteoarthritis (OA) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients on insulin therapy differed from those not on insulin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 311 subjects: 211 T2DM patients and 100 without diabetes (controls) in Mubarak Hospital, Kuwait. Patients were categorized into 3 groups: T2DM patients not on insulin (G1, n = 99), T2DM patients on insulin (G2, n = 112) and a nondiabetic control group (G3, n = 100). Plain X-ray of both knees was used to assess the changes of knee OA and graded using the Kellegren-Lawrence scale (0-4) and the Osteoarthritis Research Society International Atlas grading scale (0-3). A total of 622 knee X-rays were evaluated. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: A highly significant association (p < 0.0001) was observed for joint space narrowing (JSN) as well as for osteophyte formation between the three groups. Comparing G2 and G3, a highly significant association (p < 0.0001) was retained for JSN [201 (89.7%) vs. 199 (99.5%)] and for osteophyte formation [26 (11.7%) vs. 72 (36.0%)]. Comparing G1 and G2, significantly less osteophyte formation was noted in G2 patients compared to G1 patients [26 (11.7%) vs. 39 (19.7%), p = 0.02]. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the G2 group had less chance of osteophyte formation than either the G1 group or G3 control group (OR = 0.294, p = 0.008 and OR = 0.098, p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our findings show that T2DM patients with OA knees on insulin therapy have less radiographic osteophytes compared to T2DM patients not on insulin.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate vitamin D levels using a reliable method in patients with regional and generalized musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in comparison to healthy controls. METHODS: A consecutive prospective case control cohort was recruited. Patients with generalized MSK pain, for example, fibromyalgia (FM), and regional MSK pain, for example, nonspecific low back pain (LBP) and knee osteoarthritis (OA) were screened for 25 hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D3 ] levels over a period of 9 months in a hospital-based setting. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-four patients and 82 age-sex matched controls were evaluated. The mean age for patients was 41.71 ± 13.86 years. Of the 124 patients, 118 (95%) were female, 77 (62.6%) had FM, 18 (14.6%) had LBP and 28 (22.8%) had knee OA. All patients had normal muscle power; 83.7% of females wore long garments, 11.4% wore veils, 95.5% had sun exposure < 10 min/day and 58.5% were multiparaous; 7.3% were strict vegetarians, 45.5% took inadequate dairy products. The mean calcium, parathyroid hormone, alkaline phosphatase and albumin levels were within normal limits for all study subjects. The vitamin D level was deficient in all patients. There was no statistical difference between the mean vitamin D values of the patients and controls, 27.61 ± 13.06 and 25.82 ± 15.06 nmol/L respectively, (P = 0.368). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that it is unlikely that measuring vitamin D will be of diagnostic value in the routine assessment of regional and generalized MSK pain.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore thymidine phosphorylase (TP) expression in B-cell lymphomas (BCLs). TP is expressed by tumor and stromal cells in a variety of cancers. STUDY DESIGN: Paraffin-embedded tissues from follicular lymphomas, diffuse large BCLs (DLBCLs), and benign lymph nodes were studied using immunohistochemical staining with antibodies for TP and CD68. Prognostic markers were used to stain DLBCLs. We correlated TP expression in DLBCL indirectly with prognostic immunomarkers and directly with survival data. RESULTS: TP expression in BCLs was noted in a subset of malignant B cells. TP expression in higher-grade lymphoma was identified in 66% of cases and 11% of lower-grade lymphomas. Macrophages/stromal cells demonstrated an intense cytoplasmic and/or nuclear staining pattern in both lymphoma and benign lymph nodes, confirmed by CD68 coexpression. Increased macrophage/ stromal cells in higher-grade lymphomas are associated with enhanced TP expression in neoplastic B cells (observation only). Sixty-eight percent of TP-positive DLBCLs were of nongerminal center origin, indicating poorer prognosis. CONCLUSION: TP is more likely expressed by malignant B cells in higher-grade lymphomas, and expression of TP possibly results from changes intrinsic to the tumor cells or interactions between microenvironment and tumor. TP positivity in DLBCL correlates with nongerminal center origin and worse outcome.

RESUMEN

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is most commonly found in the lung but is occasionally found in the gastrointestinal tract and other extrapulmonary sites. Incidences of SCC in the esophagus and stomach are rare and have been reported almost exclusively in older individuals. The following case presents the discovery of small cell carcinoma of the stomach and esophagus in a 35 year old woman, which is the youngest reported incidence of this to date. Additionally, her course reflects the importance of early diagnostic endoscopy with biopsy and adequate sampling with appropriate immunohistochemical staining when malignancy is in the differential diagnosis, regardless of age or risk factors.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To test whether there are differences in the levels and ratios of 6 pro- and 3 anti-inflammatory cytokines produced by mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) subjects compared to controls. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 79 participants (42 seropositive RA patients and 37 healthy controls) were enrolled in this study. The production levels in mitogen-stimulated PBMCs of the 6 proinflammatory cytokines (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, TNF-beta, IL-8, IL-17, IL-18) and 3 anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, IL-13) were assayed by ELISA using kits obtained from Immunotech SA. The ratios of pro- to anti-inflammatory cytokines were calculated for all participants. RESULTS: There were significantly elevated levels of IL-8 and IL-10, and reduced levels of IFN-gamma, IL-4, and IL-17 in mitogen-stimulated PBMC culture supernatants of RA subjects compared to controls. Of the 18 pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratios, 3 ratios (TNF-alpha/IL13, IL-8/IL-4 and IL-8/IL-13) were significantly higher in RA patients compared to controls; and 6 were higher in controls (IFN-gamma/IL-4; IFN-gamma/IL-10; IFN-gamma/IL-13; TNF-beta/IL10; IL-17/IL-10; IL-18/IL-10). CONCLUSIONS: Activated PBMCs of RA patients, regardless of disease activity, showed higher-level production of IL-8 and IL-10 compared to controls; lower-level production of IFN-gamma, IL-4, and IL-17; and elevated ratios of TNF-alpha/IL-13, IL-8/IL-4 and IL-8/IL-13.

RESUMEN

There is paucity of literature on the association of peripheral blood cytokine patterns with patient demographics and disease variables in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We test the hypothesis that there may be differences in peripheral blood levels of inflammatory cytokines in RA subjects according to various disease variables. In this case, we could identify peripheral blood cytokine markers that correlate with different disease variables. Forty-two seropositive RA patients were characterized according to the age at onset, gender, disease duration, severity, activity and ACR functional class. The production levels in mitogen-stimulated PBMCs of five pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFNgamma, TNFalpha, TNFbeta, IL-8, IL-18) and three anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, IL-13) were evaluated in these patients and in healthy controls. Several new findings emerge: (1) higher levels of IL-4 correlate with female gender, milder disease, non-erosive disease, and earlier age at onset; (2) higher levels of IL-10 correlate with the requirement of < or =2 DMARDs; (3) higher levels of IL-18 correlate with non-erosive disease and younger age at onset; (4) higher TNFbeta levels correlate with older present age of patients; and (5) higher IL-8 levels correlate with established/late disease. There are several interesting differences in cytokine patterns with respect to age at onset, current age, disease severity, and the number of DMARDs the patients require.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the unique morphologic and phenotypic features observed in cases of T-cell lymphomas presenting as effusions. STUDY DESIGN: Cytologic slides and flow cytometric histograms of 8 cases of body fluids with T-cell lymphoma were retrospectively reviewed. Morphologic features, flow cytometric histograms and immunophenotypes of the cells were evaluated. RESULTS: Three of the 8 cases showed 1 or more of the following: intermediate-to-large cells with an increased nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, finely granular or vacuolated cytoplasm and round or convoluted vesicular nuclei with a prominent single or multiple nucleoli. Flow cytometric studies of these 3 cases showed an abnormal scatter pattern in the myelomonocytic region of the histograms. Phenotypic analysis revealed variable expression of a T-cell phenotype. The remaining cases showed the conventional morphologic and flow cytometric features of a T-cell lymphoma. CONCLUSION: Morphologic alterations of neoplastic T-cells in body fluids can result in a variety of potentially incorrect diagnoses. The unusual flow cytometric histogram can serve as a useful clue for the diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma in body fluids but could be a potential pitfall for a false negative. Detailed cytologic evaluation combined with flow cytometric study can improve diagnostic accuracy.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Only 30% of the genetic contribution to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be attributed to HLA genes, and other non-HLA genes may play a role in RA susceptibility. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) has been reported to be involved in pathogenesis of RA, and high levels of ACE have been documented in RA synovial fluid and pleural effusions. Since plasma and tissue levels of ACE are determined at the transcriptional level, we test the hypothesis that the genotype of ACE in RA patients may be a determining factor in pathogenesis. METHODS: Sixty patients with RA were recruited and clinically characterized according to disease duration, disease severity, disease activity, and American College of Rheumatology functional classes. ACE gene I/D polymorphism genotypes were determined in patients and healthy controls, using polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: We found a significant overrepresentation of the DD genotype and the D allele in patients with RA; and we found that men with RA exhibited a higher frequency of the DD genotype and D allele compared to male controls. By logistic regression analysis the DD genotype confers a relative risk for development of RA of 3. CONCLUSION: Our study found an association between ACE deletion polymorphism and RA.
