RESUMEN

Lung cancer ranks as the predominant cause of cancer-related mortalities on a global scale. Despite progress in therapeutic interventions, encompassing surgical procedures, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapy, the overall prognosis remains unfavorable. Imbalances in redox equilibrium and disrupted redox signaling, common traits in tumors, play crucial roles in malignant progression and treatment resistance. Cancer cells, often characterized by persistent high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting from genetic, metabolic, and microenvironmental alterations, counterbalance this by enhancing their antioxidant capacity. Cysteine availability emerges as a critical factor in chemoresistance, shaping the survival dynamics of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Selenium-chrysin (SeChry) was disclosed as a modulator of cysteine intracellular availability. This study comprehensively characterizes the metabolism of SeChry and investigates its cytotoxic effects in NSCLC. SeChry treatment induces notable metabolic shifts, particularly in selenocompound metabolism, impacting crucial pathways such as glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and amino acid metabolism. Additionally, SeChry affects the levels of key metabolites such as acetate, lactate, glucose, and amino acids, contributing to disruptions in redox homeostasis and cellular biosynthesis. The combination of SeChry with other treatments, such as glycolysis inhibition and chemotherapy, results in greater efficacy. Furthermore, by exploiting NSCLC's capacity to consume lactate, the use of lactic acid-conjugated dendrimer nanoparticles for SeChry delivery is investigated, showing specificity to cancer cells expressing monocarboxylate transporters.

This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) as a biomodifier of eroded and abraded dentin. Forty dentin specimens were obtained from the buccal surface of bovine teeth. The specimens were randomly distributed in 4 groups according to dentin substrate: sound or eroded/abraded and dentin biomodification: with 0.5% EGCG and no biomodification (control group). Specimens were subdivided according to aging time: 24 h and 3 months for the analysis of microtensile bond strength (n = 10), morphology of the adhesive interface by SEM (n = 3) and dentin micropermeability by fluorescence microscope (n = 8). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS system version 20.0 with a significance level of 5%. The results revealed that the control group with eroded-abraded dentin exhibited the lowest bond strength values at 24 h and 3 months. However, the application of 0.5% EGCG as a biomodifier significantly increased bond strength on both sound and eroded-abraded substrates. After 3 months, all groups exhibited an adhesive interface with a more intense fluorescence in the adhesive layer, indicating an increase in porosity at the interface. In conclusion, the EGCG application as a biomodifier enhanced bond strength on both sound and eroded-abraded dentin substrates, however, adhesive interfaces are more regular when restorations are performed on sound dentin, regardless of the biomodification with EGCG.

Sand flies are often collected in urban areas, which has several implications for the risk of transmission of Leishmania Ross, 1903, to humans and other mammals. Given this scenario, we describe the sand fly fauna of caves and their surroundings in Mangabeiras Municipal Park (MMP) and Paredão Serra do Curral Park (PSCP), both located in the urban area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, an endemic focus of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Collections were conducted monthly from November 2011 to October 2012, using CDC light traps exposed for two consecutive nights in four caves and their surroundings. Nonsystematized collections using Shannon traps and active searches were also performed around the caves. The presence of Leishmania DNA in collected female sand flies was evaluated by ITS1-PCR. A total of 857 sand flies representing fourteen species were collected in MMP, of which Evandromyia edwardsi (Mangabeira, 1941) was the most abundant. Leishmania amazonensis was detected in Brumptomyia nitzulescui (Costa Lima, 1932) and Ev. edwardsi, with the latter also having Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania infantum, and Leishmania sp. A total of 228 sand flies representing four species were collected in PSCP, of which Sciopemyia microps (Mangabeira, 1942) was the most abundant. No females from PSCP were positive for Leishmania-DNA. Studies aimed at describing sand fly faunas of cave environments and detecting Leishmania are essential to understanding the relationship between these insects and this ecotope and assessing and monitoring areas that may pose risks to the health of visitors and employees.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormal uterine bleeding is more frequent in adolescence. Although, most commonly, it has a non-structural etiology, it may be due to any cause described. CLINICAL CASE: A 12-year-old adolescent, with no relevant personal history, menarche 1 month before, was observed in the emergency department for severe menstrual bleeding with progressive worsening, and hemodynamic repercussion in need of transfusion support. Physiological ovulatory dysfunction associated with possible previously unknown coagulopathy was considered to be the most likely diagnosis and medical treatment was initiated. Without response, the patient was submitted to sedated observation and uterine aspiration, which ultimately led to the diagnosis of a Burkitt Lymphoma. DISCUSSION: Although structural causes, and particularly malignancy, whether gynecological or not, are a rare cause of abnormal uterine bleeding in this age group, they must be considered, thus enhancing the fastest and most appropriate treatment.


INTRODUçãO: A hemorragia uterina anormal é mais frequente na adolescência. Apesar de maioritariamente de etiologia não estrutural, pode dever-se a qualquer causa descrita. CASO CLíNICO: Adolescente de 12 anos, sem antecedentes pessoais relevantes, com menarca há 1 mês, observada no serviço de urgência por hemorragia menstrual grave com agravamento progressivo e repercussão hemodinâmica com necessidade de suporte transfusional. Foi colocada a hipótese de disfunção ovulatória fisiológica associada a eventual coagulopatia desconhecida previamente e foi instituído tratamento médico. Por ausência de resposta a tratamento médico, foi submetida a observação sob sedação e aspiração uterina que evidenciou tratar-se de um Linfoma de Burkitt. DISCUSSãO: Apesar de as causas estruturais, e particularmente as neoplasias, do foro ginecológico ou não, serem uma causa rara de hemorragia uterina anormal nesta faixa etária, elas devem ser levadas em consideração potenciando assim um tratamento mais célere e adequado.

Endometriosis is a benign chronic disease which can have different degrees of severity and can potentially affect any organ. Intestinal endometriosis occurs in 3%â€"37% of the cases, being more frequent in the rectosigmoid transition. Transmural involvement of intestinal endometriosis is extremely rare and is usually associated with recurrent abdominal pain. Due to the cyclical hormone influence, endometriosis implants may infiltrate the deeper layers of the intestinal wall and may lead to bowel obstruction or perforation. We present a case of transmural perforation of the rectum wall by an adjacent organ (left fallopian tube) that occurred insidiously in a patient with deep infiltrative endometriosis. A complete set of images is presented, regarding the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative findings.

RESUMEN

Facial paralysis in newborns can leave functional sequelae. Determining the evolution and amount of functional losses requires consistent evaluation methods that measure, quantitatively, the evolution of clinical functionality. This paper reports an innovative method of facial assessment for the case of a child 28 days of age with unilateral facial paralysis. The child had difficulty breast feeding, and quickly responded to the physical therapy treatment.
