RESUMEN

Background and Aims: Patronage for fitness and wellness activities has increased in Ghana, but the perception of primary consumers regarding exercise delivery service codes of conduct (EDCC) remains undocumented. This study reported the perception of clients about fitness instructors' adherence to EDCC. Methods: Three hundred and seventy-nine (mean age = 26.12 ± 8.83 years) clients registered with National Sports for ALL Association, Ghana (NASFAAG) were recruited. The participants were not living with any diagnosed disability, using psychiatric medication, and had consistently participated in fitness training, at least three times a week for a year, and not below the age of 18 years. The participants were recruited from fitness and wellness centers, gyms, and fitness clubs in three regions (Greater Accra-GA, Upper East-UE, and Ashanti-A) of Ghana. A closed-ended, self-structured and validated awareness and adherence exercise delivery codes of conduct questionnaires was administered. The questionnaire focused on data protection and responsibility, informed consent, competence, and professional and personal conduct adapted from the British Association of Sports and Exercise Science codes of conduct was administered. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 was used to run factor analysis which determined factorial distribution of clients' perception of instructors on codes of conduct. Results: In total, 50.99% (UE), 47.68% (A), and 46.02% (GA) clients indicated that identities were unprotected when trainers displayed information. In all, 31.05% (UE), 40.34% (A), and 36.48% (GA) showed they were introduced to substances without consent. In total, 38.89% (UE), 32.70% (A), and 53.55% (GA) clients participated in training to realize that the expertise expected was not provided. In all, 38.10% (UE) and 36.23% (A) agreed that instructors put safety at risk, while 23.02% (GA) exploited clients for personal gain. Conclusion: Fitness instructors need enlightenment to adhere ethically to EDCC activities in Ghana. Activities related to wellness and fitness in Ghana require regulations.

Natural remedies in the treatment of health conditions are an appealing option for many individuals. Previous studies reported that fermented and unfermented rooibos tea have considerable anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. Most of this knowledge, however, originates from animal and cell culture studies. The aims of this review are to evaluate the existing, but limited, body of knowledge regarding rooibos tea interventions in humans and to identify the gaps in the literature. The PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines were followed in the collation of this scoping review. Among the databases searched were Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science. This review comprised 18 publications, with half (50%) of the studies being conducted in South Africa. There were 488 participants in all, ranging in age from six to 83 years, in the investigations. Rooibos tea was either fermented, unfermented, or black in 62% of the studies. Doses ranging from 200 to 1,200 ml were employed. In both healthy and at-risk individuals, rooibos has been shown to enhance lipid profiles, boost antioxidant status, and lower blood glucose levels. The existing findings suggests that rooibos consumption demonstrated to improve lipid profiles, boost antioxidant status, and lower blood glucose levels in both apparently healthy, and individual at-risk individuals or diagnosed of chronic conditions. Thus, it can be presumed that rooibos tea provides some health benefits, yet these findings are based on a limited number of human intervention studies and a small total sample size. Additionally, a variety of rooibos dosages and types of tea in the experiments had inconsistent results that were probably impacted by the amount consumed. Future studies should include a dose-response study in humans, as well as large scaled clinical trials to evaluate the health effects of Rooibos.

BACKGROUND: Projection of the effectiveness of house-hold physical activity may be a vital tool to improve active lifestyle. Although ampe is a common house-hold recreational physical activity among all population groups especially school children in Ghana, no empirical evidence of its effects on the anthropometric and physiological parameters of the children. This pilot study examined the effect of ampe exercise programme on the anthropometric and physiological parameters of school children. METHODS: Purposive and stratified sampling techniques were applied to recruit 78 school children (ages of 9 to 12, mean age of 10.65±0.94 years). The participants attended 40 minutes of ampe exercise program three times per week, for four weeks consecutively. Body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio; % body fat, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure and heart rate were measured prepost training. RESULTS: Ampe exercise programme produced positive effects on all parameters. Body weight (0.31%) and body mass index (0.58%) decreased significantly (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure (3.15%), diastolic blood pressure (1.92%) and heart rate (2.13) significantly improved (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Ampe exercise programme is effective as paediatric obesity house-hold intervention to provide the impetus for active lifestyles of school children.

Stroke is the topmost cause of mortality and disability in Ghana. Conventional exercise is mostly used aside pharmacological management technique but the complimentary effects of combined exercise training (CET) have not been reported. This study investigated the effectiveness of combined and conventional exercise trainings on lipid-cardiovascular profiles and body composition among stroke patients in Kumasi. Thirteen stroke survivors between ages 35-68 years (mean±standard deviation: age, 59.88±10.88 years; duration of illness, 18.11±7.72 years) participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to CET and conventional exercise group. The CET had 10 weeks of 3 types of exercise trainings, 3 days/wk; conventional exercise group monitored for daily conventional activities during the same period. Post weight (P= 0.003), body mass index (P=0.004), systolic blood pressure (P=0.022), diastolic blood pressure (P=0.004), heart rate (P=0.003), and total cholesterol (P=0.044) of the CET were significantly improved. CET significantly improved total cholesterol (P=0.005) and low-density lipoprotein (P=0.006) better than the conventional exercises. Effectiveness of CET to positively enhance biochemical responses in the management of strove patients was established.
