RESUMEN

A 3,480 g male neonate showed tachypnea symptom with a serum ionized calcium level of 0.66 mmol/L by routine clinical analysis. He was injected calcium gluconate intravenously through femoral vein catheter to treat the hypocalcemia. On second day after the injection, he started to show erythema in the flank area. The lesion became firm and changed into whitish crust consist of small crystals. Abdominal X-ray and ultrasonography showed the accumulation of calcium deposit in the subcutaneous layer of the lesion. Surgical debridement was performed to remove the crust with calcium deposit and acellular fish skin graft rich in omega-3 (Kerecis) was applied to the defect site for secondary intention of the defect wound. After 2 months, the skin and soft tissue defect were fully covered with healthy normal skin without depression or contracture. This report is a first case of iatrogenic calcinosis cutis without extravasation symptom.

Due to the limited supply of vessels and nerves, acute or chronic tendon injuries often result in significant and persistent complications, such as pain and sprains, as well as the loss of joint functions. Among these complications, tendon adhesions within the surrounding soft tissue have been shown to significantly impair the range of motion. In this study, to elucidate the effects of a hyaluronic acid (HA) injection at the site of tenorrhaphy on tendon adhesion formation, we used a full transection model of a rat's Achilles tendon to investigate the anti-adhesive function of HA. Our initial findings showed that significantly lower adhesion scores were observed in the HA-treated experimental group than in the normal saline-treated control group, as determined by macroscopic and histological evaluations. Hematoxylin and eosin, as well as picrosirius red staining, showed denser and irregular collagen fibers, with the larger number of infiltrating inflammatory cells in the control group indicating severe adhesion formation. Furthermore, we observed that the expression of tendon adhesion markers in operated tendon tissue, such as collagen type I, transforming growth factor-ß1, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, was suppressed at both the gene and protein levels following HA treatment. These results suggest that HA injections could reduce tendon adhesion formation by significantly ameliorating inflammatory-associated reactions.

BACKGROUND: Thread lifting is one of the most common minimally invasive options in facial rejuvenation procedures. The application of polydioxanone (PDO) showed good results and fewer complications. PDO threads effectively strengthen the contour of the face, reduce roundness, and lift sagging skin due to collagen-stimulating properties. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was an evaluation of the efficacy of the PDO threads: the combination of the cog type and press cog type threads (Ncog and Nfix) and cog type thread (Ncog) alone. And this study was conducted to define complications related to thread inserting during the follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients who underwent PDO thread treatment for facial rejuvenation and tightening sagging skin tissues were evaluated. The follow-up period was seven months. Photographic objective and subjective evaluations were performed during this period. RESULTS: Thirty patients were included in this study. The mean age of participants was 51.8 years (range 65 to 34). There was a statistically significant difference between pre and 1-month post-operative results in both groups with a mean score of 1.94 ± 0.43 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the combination of Ncog and N fix showed slightly better results than Ncog alone. According to patient satisfaction, all patients were satisfied with the clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed PDO threads are effective in aged skin rejuvenation, soft tissue retraction, and support, showing fewer complications. In addition, it could be assumed that treatment with thicker thread could be a more efficacious procedure. However, this statement requires further researches.
