The objective of this study to examine the effects of curcumin and gallic acid use against oxidative stress damage in the autologous intraperitoneal ovarian transplantation model created in rats on ovarian follicle reserve, ovarian surface epithelium, and oxidant-antioxidant systems. 42 adult female Sprague Dawley rats (n=7) were allocated into 6 groups. Group 1 served as the control. In Group 2, rats underwent ovarian transplantation (TR) to their peritoneal walls. Group 3 received corn oil (CO) (0.5 ml/day) one day before and 14 days after transplantation. Group 4 was administered curcumin (CUR) (100 mg/kg/day), Group 5 received gallic acid (GA) (20 mg/kg/day), and Group 6 was treated with a combination of curcumin and gallic acid via oral gavage after transplantation. Rats were sacrificed on the 14th postoperative day, and blood along with ovaries were collected for analysis. The removed ovaries were analyzed at light microscopic, fluorescence microscopic, and biochemical levels. In Group 2 and Group 3, while serum and tissue Total Oxidant Levels (TOS) and Oxidative Stress Index (OSI) increased, serum Total Antioxidant Levels (TAS) decreased statistically significantly (p˂0.05) compared to the other groups (Groups 1, 4, 5, and 6). The ovarian follicle reserve was preserved and the changes in the ovarian surface epithelium and histopathological findings were reduced in the antioxidant-treated groups (Groups 4, 5, and 6). In addition, immunofluorescence examination revealed that the expression of Cytochrome C and Caspase 3 was stronger and Ki-67 was weaker in Groups 2 and 3, in comparison to the groups that were given antioxidants. It can be said that curcumin and gallic acid have a histological and biochemical protective effect against ischemia-reperfusion injury due to ovarian transplantation, and this effect is stronger when these two antioxidants are applied together compared to individual use.

Background: There has been a debate on whether sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) differs from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although there have been many studies on metabolic parameters in relation to ADHD, no similar studies have been conducted on patients with SCT. We investigated whether there are differences between SCT and ADHD in terms of these factors. Subjects and Methods: Sixty-two participants with ages ranging from 11 to 18 who have diagnosis of ADHD (33 subjects) and SCT (29 subjects) were included in this study. The parents of all participants completed the 48-item Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) and the Barkley Child Attention Scale (BCAS) forms, and all participants' blood was taken to compare metabolic, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status of the SCT and ADHD groups. A child and adolescent psychiatrist interviewed the parents and children to assess the diagnosis of SCT and ADHD using standard diagnostic procedures. Results: In the comparison between the SCT and ADHD groups in terms of metabolic parameters, statistically significant differences were found in terms of total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, Oxidative Stress Index, total thiol, native thiol, disulfide, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and DNA damage (p < 0.05), but not in terms of tumor necrosis factor-α (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our data showed that these two disorders may be different, but we believe that the data that indicate their differences remain inconclusive overall, but this study may be a potential pathway for future research.

OBJECTIVE: Severe inflammation and oxidative stress seen in COVID-19 patients cause cumulative antiviral effects, and serious inflammation increases tissue, oxidative damage, and DNA damage. Therefore, in this study, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and inflammation biomarkers were investigated in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. METHODS: In this study, blood samples were obtained from 150 Covid-19 patients diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction and 150 healthy volunteers with the same demographic characteristics. Total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), total thiol (TT), native thiol, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities were measured by photometric methods. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß), and interleukin 6 (IL-6), which are inflammation markers, were measured by the ELISA method using commercial kits. The genotoxic effect was evaluated by Comet Assay. RESULTS: The oxidative stress biomarkers; Disulfide, TOS, MPO, oxidative stress index, and IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels of inflammation biomarkers and the DNA damage in COVID-19 patients were increased (p<0.001), and the levels of TAS, TT, and NT In COVID-19 patients were decreased (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: In COVID-19 patients, induced DNA damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress can guide the prognosis and treatment strategies of the disease.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to compare the oxidative stress parameters, thiol-disulfide homeostasis, and plasma pro-inflammatory cytokines levels of patients with bipolar disorder (BD), BD patients' first-degree relatives (FDRs), and the healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: Thirty-five patients with BD, 35 FDRs of BD, and 35 healthy controls (HCs) were included. The individuals' ages varied from 28 to 58, and the groups were well-matched in terms of age and gender. The total thiol (TT), native thiol (NT), disulfide (DIS), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α concentrations were measured from serum samples. The oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated using mathematical formulas. RESULTS: TOS was significantly higher in both patients and FDRs than HCs (p < 0.01 for all pairwise comparisons). OSI, DIS, oxidized thiol, and the ratio of thiol oxidation-reduction levels were significantly higher in both patients with BD and FDRs than HCs (p < 0.01 for all pairwise comparisons). TAS, TT, NT, and reduced thiol levels were significantly lower in both patients with BD and FDRs than HCs (p < 0.01 for all pairwise comparisons). IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α were significantly higher in both patients and FDRs than HCs (p < 0.01 for all pairwise comparisons). LIMITATIONS: Small sample size. CONCLUSIONS: Early diagnosis is important for treating of bipolar disorder. TT, NT, DIS, TOS, TAS, OSI, IL1-ß, IL-6, and TNF-α can be used as potential biomarkers in the early diagnosis and intervention of BD. Furthermore, oxidative/antioxidative markers and plasma pro-inflammatory cytokine parameters may guide the determination of the disease's activity and response to treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims that oxidative stress and inflammation status in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to their healthy peers. METHOD: Thirty ADHD and healthy controls were included in this study. ADHD diagnosis according to the DSM-V and Conners' teacher and parent rating scale by a structured psychiatric interview. Total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and total and native thiol levels were determined using photometric methods. Presepsin, Interleukin (IL) 1-ß, IL-6, and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured with commercial ELISA kits. RESULTS: We showed that TOS and oxidative stress index were significantly higher in the ADHD group, and TAS was lower than in the control group (p<.001). Similarly, IL1-ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were statistically higher in the ADHD group. Backward LR regression analysis reveals that TOS and IL-6 predicted ADHD. CONCLUSION: TOS and IL-6 levels may play a role in the pathogenesis of ADHD.

To examine the effects of 50 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg of propolis on ovarian folliculogenesis, p53 expression, and serum luteinising hormone (LH) and progesterone (P) levels in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) modeled rats. Twenty-four Wistar female rats were divided into 4 experimental groups: Group 1 (G1, Control), Group 2 (G2, PCOS), Group 3 (G3, PCOS + 50 mg/kg propolis), and Group 4 (G4, PCOS + 150 mg/kg propolis). The PCOS model was induced via the administration of letrozole for 21 days. After 21 days, G3 and G4 received propolis (50 mg/kg or 150 mg/kg) by oral gavage for 10 days. Daily oestrous cycles were assessed to monitor PCOS formation. Histological examinations were carried out using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson Trichrome (MT) staining. Ovarian follicles and corpus luteum (CL) structures were investigated. P and LH serum levels were determined by ELISA. A significant increase was observed in the number of cystic follicles in G2 compared to G1 (p < 0.001). Treatment with 50 mg/kg of propolis significantly ameliorated the elevated number of cystic and primary follicles seen in G2 (p < 0.001). Furthermore, G2 demonstrated a significant decrease in the number of CL structures (p < 0.05). Serum LH levels were significantly higher in G4 compared to both G1 and G2 (p < 0.01). No significant change was observed in circulating P levels. No p53 immunoreactivity was observed in any group. Low concentrations of propolis cannot completely improve the hormone profile and p53 expression associated with PCOS; however, these concentrations can control ovarian follicular cell architecture.

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a significant health concern globally and spatiotemporal investigations on the etiology and progression of COPD are needed to develop more effective and timely preventive measures. To address this continuing need, we explored the association of air-quality and meteorological markers, fruit and vegetable consumption and drinking water source trajectories with COPD death rate. Methods: For 81 provinces of Turkey, we extracted and merged data in four dimensions: provincial COPD deaths, provincial annual meteorological and air-quality markers, drinking water source data covering rivers, dams, wells, and springs, and annual provincial fruits and vegetables consumption. To investigate the association of these markers with COPD deaths, we used a spatial modelling approach accounting for the spatial autocorrelation. Results: Controlling for household expenditure on cigarette and alcohol and elderly population size, our models suggest that provinces with higher consumption of lemon and higher temperature reported lower level of COPD deaths and provinces high in Nitrogen Dioxide concentration reported higher COPD deaths on average. Conclusion: Therefore, provinces with such profiles need to develop closer screening and follow-up of patients with COPD and encourage healthier diets and lifestyles.

This study was aimed at investigating the effects of melatonin, oxytetracycline and N-acetylcysteine on the ovarian follicle reserves and surface epithelium in autologous intraperitoneal ovarian transplantation in rats. Thirty adult female Wistar Albino were selected and randomly divided into six groups (n = 5). Group 1, which was the control group, only had their abdomens opened and closed while Group 2 underwent ovarian transplantation. Group 3, 4, 5 and 6 received 20 µg/kg/IM melatonin, 10 mg/kg/IM oxytetracycline, 150 mg/kg/IP N-Asetil sistein (NAC) and 1% ethanol respectively 15 min before the ovarian transplantation. Vaginal cytology was performed to monitor the estrus phase and the follicle reserve and changes in the surface epithelium were histopathologically evaluated during the preparations. Moreover, cellular apoptosis in tissues was evaluated with immunofluorescence staining of Bcl-2 and Bax. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was then calculated as the mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of Bax and Bcl-2 MFI. Dysplastic change was found only significantly higher in the transplantation group (G2) (p < 0.01). Histopathologically, it was found that the follicle reserve was preserved significantly in the oxytetracycline and melatonin treated group (G3, G4) (p < 0.01). It was also observed that the oxytetracycline treated group (G4) were able to show better preventive effects against dysplastic changes of the surface epithelium. Moreover, the melatonin treated group depicted a low Bax/Bcl-2 ratio compared to the group that only underwent transplantation (G2) (p < 0.01). This study indicated that oxytetracycline and melatonin might be more effective than N-acetylcysteine in protecting against oxidative stress during ovarian transplantation.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and psychological fatigue as a mental health issue among the population of Istanbul, Turkey. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, between March and June 2020, where a total of 4,700 persons were approached and 3,672 (78%) of participants (64.4% males and 35.6% females) completed the Knowledge Attitude Practices (KAP) and Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) questionnaires. RESULTS: In this study, 64.1% of participants were categorized as psychologically fatigued and 35.9% as normal. There was a significant difference between fatigued and normal participants with respect to age, educational level, occupational status, place of residence and number of family members (p < .001). Other differences related to knowledge of COVID-19 were symptoms, treatment, ways of spreading (p < .001), prevention by avoiding crowded places (p = .008) and isolation (p = .002). For attitudinal items, normal participants generally showed more positive attitudes than the fatigued in believing that COVID-19 will finally be controlled, satisfaction with preventive measures taken by the authorities, reporting suspected cases with symptoms and trusting that Turkey can overcome the COVID-19 pandemic (p < .001). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis indicated that level of education, avoiding going to crowded places, eye, nose and mouth organs are sensitive organs to the virus, keeping physical distance due to epidemic affect by COVID-19 virus, isolation and treatment of people reduce the spread of COVID-19 virus and 14-days period of time, COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact with the respiratory droplets of an infected person, occupational status, health education programme needed and antibody treatment variables were significantly associated with fatigue after adjusting for age, gender and income variables. CONCLUSION: The current study provides valuable information for policymakers and mental health professionals worldwide regarding associations between the mental health of individuals and the ongoing outbreak, COVID-19.
