RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: In this comprehensive study spanning 33 malignancies, we explored the differential expression and prognostic significance of Heparan sulfate 6-O-sulfotransferase 2 (HS6ST2). METHODS: TIMER2, UALCAN, and GEPIA2 were used for the expression analysis. cBioPortal was used for mutational analysis. CancerSEA, STRING, and DAVID, were employed for the single cell sequencing data analysis, protein-protein interaction network development, and gene enrichment analyses, respectively. GSCAlite and RT-qPCR were used for drug sensitivity and expression validation analysis. RESULTS: HS6ST2 exhibited significant (P < 0.05) overexpression in multiple cancers. Prognostically, elevated HS6ST2 expression was significantly associated with poor overall survival (OS) in patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CESC), kidney chromophobe (KICH), lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), and stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), emphasizing its potential as a prognostic indicator in these cancers. Moreover, HS6ST2 expression correlated with pathological stages in CESC, KICH, LUAD, and STAD patients. Exploration of genetic alterations using cBioPortal unveiled distinct mutational landscapes, with low mutation frequencies in CESC, KICH, LUAD, and STAD. Additionally, reduced DNA methylation in CESC, KICH, LUAD, and STAD suggested a potential link between hypomethylation and heightened HS6ST2 expression. Analysis of immune cell infiltration revealed a positive correlation between HS6ST2 expression and the infiltration of CD8+ T and CD4+ T cells in CESC, KICH, LUAD, and STAD, highlighting its involvement in the tumor immunology processes. Single-cell functional states analysis demonstrated associations between HS6ST2 and diverse cellular processes. Moreover, gene enrichment analysis revealed the involvement HS6ST2 in crucial cellular activities. GSCAlite analysis underscored the potential of HS6ST2 as a therapeutic target, showing associations with drug sensitivity. Finally, experimental validation through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunohistochemistry in LUAD tissues confirmed elevated HS6ST2 expression. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of HS6ST2 in CESC, KICH, LUAD, and STAD, emphasizing its potential as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heterogeneous disease that mainly affects the myocardium. In the current study, we aim to explore HCM-related hub genes through the analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between HCM and normal sample groups. METHODS: The GSE68316 and GSE36961 expression profiles were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for the identification of DEGs, to explore hub genes, and to perform their expression analysis. Clinical HCM and control tissue samples were taken for expression and promoter methylation validation analysis via RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and targeted bisulfite sequencing (bisulfite-seq) analyses. Then, other different bioinformatics tools were employed to perform STRING, lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks, gene enrichment, and drug prediction analyses. RESULTS: In total, the top 20 DEGs, including 10 up-regulated and 10 down-regulated, were obtained from GSE68316. Out of the 20 DEGs, we subsequently identified the 8 most important hub genes including 5 up-regulated genes (EPB42, UQCRH, CA1, PFDN5, and LSM5) and 3 down-regulated genes (RPS24, TNS1, and RPL26). Expression and promoter methylation dysregulation of these genes were further validated on clinical HCM samples paired with controls. Next, we further investigated hub genes' regulatory 6 miRNAs (has-mir-1-3p, has-mir-129-5p, has-mir-16-5p, has-mir-23b-3p, has-mir-27-3p, and has-mir-182-5p) and miRNAs regulatory 4 lncRNAs (NUTMB2-AS1, NEAT1, XIST, and GABPB1-AS1) in this study via the lncRNA-cricRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network. Later on, gene enrichment analysis revealed that hub genes were enriched in various important pathways including Nitrogen metabolism, Ribosome, RNA degradation, Cardiac muscle contraction, and Coronavirus disease, etc. Finally, the drug prediction analysis highlighted different potential candidate drugs for altering the expression of hub genes in the treatment of HCM. CONCLUSION: In summary, the identification of key hub genes and their enrichment analysis in the current study may shed light on the mechanisms behind the occurrence and development of HCM.

BACKGROUND: Globally, educational institutes have been obliged to make a quick transition from traditional face-to-face teaching to e-learning during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has purportedly created various barriers to achieving desired learning outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to assess the perceptions of undergraduate dental students regarding online and physical learning in Pakistan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2022. The study comprised dental students from 1st to 4th years who were above the age of 18 and of either gender. The Google Forms questionnaire was created to evaluate the quality and efficiency of online and physical learning among dentistry undergraduates. RESULTS: In a survey of 246 students, 70.3% strongly agreed that they would prefer face-to-face instruction over e-learning. There was a statistically significant difference in the improvement of students' technical skills (p = 0.01), accessibility to instructors (p = 0.01) and classmates (p = 0.02), value of technology (p = 0.03), improvement of oral communication skills (p = 0.01), promotion of hybrid model learning after the pandemic (p = 0.01), and utilization of tutorial services (p = 0.04) between different year of study. CONCLUSION: Pakistani dental students indicated satisfaction with numerous aspects of e-learning, such as technical skills, accessibility to instructors and classmates, the value of technology, improvement of oral communication skills, promotion of hybrid model learning, and utilization of tutorial services compared to face-to-face education concerning the year of study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has badly affected the mental health, quality of life, and self-esteem of students worldwide. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to evaluate the psychological impact and self-esteem of dental students using Rosenberg self-esteem scale and PIDAQ during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: This cross-sectional research was conducted amongst the dental students studying at various dental colleges in Karachi, Pakistan from January to May 2022. Evaluation of psychological aspect and self-esteem of students was carried out using "Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ)", and "Rosenberg self-esteem scale" as perceived by students during the pandemic. For data analysis SPSS v24 was used. Data analysis comprised of descriptive analysis, Spearman correlation, One-way Anova and Linear regression. The level of significance of p value was less than 0.05. RESULTS: Overall 332 students participated, among which there were 181 females (54.5%), 151 males (45.5%). Dental self-confidence showed a negative relationship with social influence, psychological effect, and aesthetic concern, while it was positively linked with self-esteem during the pandemic. Social impact demonstrated association with psychological impact, aesthetic concern, and self-esteem, while it was negatively correlated with dental confidence. Rosenberg score showed positive correlation with all the variables. Statistically significant association was identified for variables when compared with gender. Regression analysis indicated association of age with dental confidence and RSS, while gender with social influence. CONCLUSION: The pandemic, aside from affecting the health of individuals worldwide, also badly affected the well-being, mental health, and self-esteem of the dental students. Dental aesthetics plays a crucial role in the mental wellbeing and self-esteem of the students.

OBJECTIVES: Oncogenic processes in cancer are frequently marked by the dysregulation of critical genes, and PTPN3 (Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase, Non-Receptor Type 3) has emerged as a gene of interest due to its potential involvement in various cellular processes. This study delves into the diagnostic and prognostic implications of PTPN3 in a pan-cancer context. METHODS: Leveraging comprehensive genomic datasets and experimental validation, we aimed to shed light on the role of PTPN3 in cancer. RESULTS: Our findings revealed the pervasive up-regulation of PTPN3 across 33 cancer types, making it a ubiquitous player in tumorigenesis. Of particular note, PTPN3 up-regulation exhibited a strong association with reduced overall survival in breast cancer (BRCA) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). This underscores PTPN3's potential as a valuable prognostic marker in these cancers. While genetic mutations often drive oncogenic processes, our mutational analysis demonstrated the relative stability of PTPN3 in BRCA and LUAD. Promoter methylation analysis showed that hypomethylation plays a predominant role in PTPN3 dysregulation in BRCA and LUAD. Furthermore, our study unveiled positive correlations between PTPN3 expression and CD8+ T cell infiltration, offering insights into the gene's influence on the tumor immune microenvironment. Pathway enrichment analysis highlighted the involvement of PTPN3-associated genes in crucial signaling pathways. In addition, drug prediction analysis pinpointed potential drugs capable of modulating PTPN3 expression, opening avenues for personalized treatment strategies. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study elucidates the multifaceted roles of PTPN3 in BRCA and LUAD, underlining its significant up-regulation, prognostic relevance, epigenetic regulation, and its impact on the tumor immune microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is a fatal disease in humans that is caused by Salmonella typhi. S. typhi infections need immediate antibiotic therapy, and their extensive use has led to multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. The use of bacteriophages is becoming a new way to treat these resistant bacteria. This research was directed to bacteriophage isolation against S. typhi and to determine phage-antibiotic synergism. AIMS: To isolate bacteriophages targeting S. typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever, and investigate their potential synergistic effects when combined with antibiotics. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: The Widal test was positive; twenty diarrheal stool samples were taken, and for confirmation of S. typhi, different biochemical tests were performed. The disc-diffusion technique was used to determine antimicrobial resistance, and the double agar overlay method was used for bacteriophage isolation from sewage water against S. typhi. To test antibiotic-phage synergism, the S. typhi bacteria was treated by phages together with varying antibiotic concentrations. RESULTS: Eleven samples were positive for S. typhi with black colonies on SS-agar. These were catalase and MR positive with alkali butt on TSI. Clear plaques were observed after the agar overlay. Isolated phages were stable at various pH and temperature levels. Synergism was observed on agar plate. The zone was enlarged when phages were combined with bacterial lawn culture and ciprofloxacin disk. Bacterial growth inhibition had a significant p-value of 0.03 in titration plates, with the phage-ciprofloxacin combination being more effective than the phage and antibiotic alone. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the synergistic effects of isolated bacteriophages with antibiotics, which are not only effective against S. typhi infection but also decrease antibiotic resistance.

The extraordinary success of deep learning is made possible due to the availability of crowd-sourced large-scale training datasets. Mostly, these datasets contain personal and confidential information, thus, have great potential of being misused, raising privacy concerns. Consequently, privacy-preserving deep learning has become a primary research interest nowadays. One of the prominent approaches adopted to prevent the leakage of sensitive information about the training data is by implementing differential privacy during training for their differentially private training, which aims to preserve the privacy of deep learning models. Though these models are claimed to be a safeguard against privacy attacks targeting sensitive information, however, least amount of work is found in the literature to practically evaluate their capability by performing a sophisticated attack model on them. Recently, DP-BCD is proposed as an alternative to state-of-the-art DP-SGD, to preserve the privacy of deep-learning models, having low privacy cost and fast convergence speed with highly accurate prediction results. To check its practical capability, in this article, we analytically evaluate the impact of a sophisticated privacy attack called the membership inference attack against it in both black box as well as white box settings. More precisely, we inspect how much information can be inferred from a differentially private deep model's training data. We evaluate our experiments on benchmark datasets using AUC, attacker advantage, precision, recall, and F1-score performance metrics. The experimental results exhibit that DP-BCD keeps its promise to preserve privacy against strong adversaries while providing acceptable model utility compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

Copper(II) complexes with a general formula [Cu2(3,4-F2C6H3CH2COO)4(L)2], where L = 2-methylpyridine (1) and 3-methylpyridine (2), are reported here. The FTIR spectra of the complexes confirmed the bridging bidentate coordination mode of the carboxylate ligand. The low (475 and 449 cm-1) and strong (727 & 725 cm-1) intensity bands in the FTIR spectra, due to Cu-N stretches and pyridyl ring vibrations, confirmed coordination of the 2-/3-methyl pyridine co-ligands in complexes 1 and 2, respectively. A binuclear paddlewheel structural arrangement with a square pyramidal geometry was confirmed for copper atoms in the complexes via single-crystal X-ray analysis. The DPPH, •OH radical, and α-amylase enzyme inhibition assays showed higher activities for the complexes than for the free ligand acid. The binding constant (Kb = 1.32 × 105 for 1 and 5.33 × 105 for 2) calculated via UV-VIS absorption measurements and docking scores (-6.59 for 1 and -7.43 for 2) calculated via molecular docking showed higher SS-DNA binding potential for 2 compared to 1. Viscosity measurement also reflected higher DNA binding ability for 2 than 1. Both complexes 1 and 2 (docking scores of -7.43 and -6.95, respectively) were found to be more active inhibitors than the free ligand acid (docking score of -5.5159) against the target α-amylase protein. This in silico study has shown that the herein reported compounds follow the rules of drug-likeness and exhibit good potential for bioavailability.

Today, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are growing rapidly and provide a lot of comfort to human life. Due to the use of WSNs in various areas, like health care and battlefield, security is an important concern in the data transfer procedure to prevent data manipulation. Trust management is an affective scheme to solve these problems by building trust relationships between sensor nodes. In this paper, a cluster-based trusted routing technique using fire hawk optimizer called CTRF is presented to improve network security by considering the limited energy of nodes in WSNs. It includes a weighted trust mechanism (WTM) designed based on interactive behavior between sensor nodes. The main feature of this trust mechanism is to consider the exponential coefficients for the trust parameters, namely weighted reception rate, weighted redundancy rate, and energy state so that the trust level of sensor nodes is exponentially reduced or increased based on their hostile or friendly behaviors. Moreover, the proposed approach creates a fire hawk optimizer-based clustering mechanism to select cluster heads from a candidate set, which includes sensor nodes whose remaining energy and trust levels are greater than the average remaining energy and the average trust level of all network nodes, respectively. In this clustering method, a new cost function is proposed based on four objectives, including cluster head location, cluster head energy, distance from the cluster head to the base station, and cluster size. Finally, CTRF decides on inter-cluster routing paths through a trusted routing algorithm and uses these routes to transmit data from cluster heads to the base station. In the route construction process, CTRF regards various parameters such as energy of the route, quality of the route, reliability of the route, and number of hops. CTRF runs on the network simulator version 2 (NS2), and its performance is compared with other secure routing approaches with regard to energy, throughput, packet loss rate, latency, detection ratio, and accuracy. This evaluation proves the superior and successful performance of CTRF compared to other methods.

The nutritional components of cantaloupe, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, contribute to overall health, improved immunity, hydration, and protection against chronic diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different concentrations (0 (control), 100, 150, and 200 ppm) of 1-naphthalene acetic acid (1-NAA) on the nutritional components of the cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L. Var. Super White Honey). All the studied treatments were applied twice at the 2nd and 4th leaf stages. The applied concentrations of 1-NAA significantly improved the sex expression and fruit yield attributes. Different nutritional components like proximate contents, minerals, vitamins, selected fatty acids, and amino acids were analyzed. The results showed that the maximum moisture content, proteins, carbohydrates, ash, and energy were recorded with 100 ppm. The higher lipids were recorded during the supplementation of 150 ppm. Significantly greater fibers were recorded using 200 ppm. Regarding minerals, 100 ppm was found to be the best as it increased calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na), phosphorous (P), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn). Vitamins were also found to be the maximum with 100 ppm, including vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. Total selected fatty acids and amino acids were also found significantly greater in the fruits administered 100 ppm.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder that progresses gradually but irreversibly leading to dementia and is difficult to prevent and treat. There is a considerable time window in which the progression of the disease can be intervened. Scientific advances were required to help the researchers to identify the effective methods for the prevention and treatment of disease. This research was designed to investigate potential mediators for the remedy of AD, five new carboxylate amide zinc complexes (AAZ9-AAZ13) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques. The biological evaluation was carried out based on the cholinesterase inhibitory mechanism. The preparation methodology provided the effective synthesis of targeted moieties. The in vitro pharmacological activities were evaluated involving AChE/BChE inhibition and antioxidant potential. All synthesized compounds displayed activity against both enzymes in higher or comparable to the standard drug Galantamine, a reversible inhibitor but the results displayed by compound AAZ10 indicated IC50 of 0.0013 µM (AChE) and 0.061 µM (BChE) as high values for dual AChE/BChE inhibition with potent anti-oxidant results. Structure activity relationship (SAR) indicated that the potent activity of compound AAZ10 appeared due to the presence of nitro clusters at the ortho position of an aromatic ring. The potent synthesized compound AAZ10 was also explored for the in-vivo Anti-Alzheimer activity and anti-oxidant activity. Binding approaches of all synthesized compounds were revealed through molecular docking studies concerning binding pockets of enzymes that analyzed the best posture interaction with amino acid (AA) residues providing an appreciable understanding of enzyme inhibitory mechanisms. Results indicate that synthesized zinc (II) amide carboxylates can behave as an effective remedy in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a universal network to supervise the physical world through sensors installed on different devices. The network can improve many areas, including healthcare because IoT technology has the potential to reduce pressure caused by aging and chronic diseases on healthcare systems. For this reason, researchers attempt to solve the challenges of this technology in healthcare. In this paper, a fuzzy logic-based secure hierarchical routing scheme using the firefly algorithm (FSRF) is presented for IoT-based healthcare systems. FSRF comprises three main frameworks: fuzzy trust framework, firefly algorithm-based clustering framework, and inter-cluster routing framework. A fuzzy logic-based trust framework is responsible for evaluating the trust of IoT devices on the network. This framework identifies and prevents routing attacks like black hole, flooding, wormhole, sinkhole, and selective forwarding. Moreover, FSRF supports a clustering framework based on the firefly algorithm. It presents a fitness function that evaluates the chance of IoT devices to be cluster head nodes. The design of this function is based on trust level, residual energy, hop count, communication radius, and centrality. Also, FSRF involves an on-demand routing framework to decide on reliable and energy-efficient paths that can send the data to the destination faster. Finally, FSRF is compared to the energy-efficient multi-level secure routing protocol (EEMSR) and the enhanced balanced energy-efficient network-integrated super heterogeneous (E-BEENISH) routing method based on network lifetime, energy stored in IoT devices, and packet delivery rate (PDR). These results prove that FSRF improves network longevity by 10.34% and 56.35% and the energy stored in the nodes by 10.79% and 28.51% compared to EEMSR and E-BEENISH, respectively. However, FSRF is weaker than EEMSR in terms of security. Furthermore, PDR in this method has dropped slightly (almost 1.4%) compared to that in EEMSR.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this bibliometric analysis was to ascertain the research trend regarding the application of photodynamic therapy as a treatment modality for periodontal disease. METHODS: An online search was administered using the Scopus database to retrieve all the relevant research literature published from 2003 till 26th Dec 2022. After applying the inclusion criteria articles pertinent to the topic were manually selected. Data was saved as CSV. Data was read using VOSviewer software and further analysis was performed using Microsoft excel. RESULTS: From a total of 545 articles, 117 scientific papers relevant to the field were evaluated. The keen interest of researchers was identified by an increase in the number of publications over the course of time, with the highest citations n = 827 attained during the year 2009. Brazil, India, and USA made significant contribution by publishing highest number of papers. Organizations from the USA produced the highest publications which attained high citations. Author Sculean A. published the highest number of papers. Journal of periodontology was the leading journal, by publishing highest number of papers (n = 15), followed by Journal of Clinical Periodontology. CONCLUSION: This bibliometric analysis provided detailed information regarding the total number of publications from 2003 to 2022 and the number of citations attained. Brazil has been identified as the leading country, whilst all the leading organizations which contributed significantly, were from USA. The Journal of Periodontology published the highest number of papers which had been highly cited. Sculean A, affiliated with University of Bern, Switzerland published the highest number of papers.

Six heteroleptic Cu(II) carboxylates (1-6) were prepared by reacting 2-chlorophenyl acetic acid (L1), 3-chlorophenyl acetic acid (L2), and substituted pyridine (2-cyanopyridine and 2-chlorocyanopyridine). The solid-state behavior of the complexes was described via vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR), which revealed that the carboxylate moieties adopted different coordination modes around the Cu(II) center. A paddlewheel dinuclear structure with distorted square pyramidal geometry was elucidated from the crystal data for complexes 2 and 5 with substituted pyridine moieties at the axial positions. The presence of irreversible metal-centered oxidation reduction peaks confirms the electroactive nature of the complexes. A relatively higher binding affinity was observed for the interaction of SS-DNA with complexes 2-6 compared to L1 and L2. The findings of the DNA interaction study indicate an intercalative mode of interaction. The maximum inhibition against acetylcholinesterase enzyme was caused for complex 2 (IC50 = 2 µg/mL) compared to the standard drug Glutamine (IC50 = 2.10 µg/mL) while the maximum inhibition was found for butyrylcholinesterase enzyme by complex 4 (IC50 = 3 µg/mL) compared to the standard drug Glutamine (IC50 = 3.40 µg/mL). The findings of the enzymatic activity suggest that the under study compounds have potential for curing of Alzheimer's disease. Background: Denture stomatitis is a clinical condition that affects people who wear removable maxillary dentures. It causes redness, soreness, and erythema and ultimately affects the general condition of the patient. The objective of this study was to analyze the leading countries, journals, organizations, and authors and the frequently used keywords associated with denture stomatitis. Material and Methods: A bibliometric analysis of publications indexed in the Scopus database was conducted, and the article titles, abstracts, and keywords were analyzed using the VOSviewer software. Denture stomatitis-related publications from 1960 to 2021 were collected. This study included only research papers published in English with "article" as the paper type and dentistry as the subject area. Results: Data from a total of 461 articles and 10 different journals were obtained. The papers were published in 64 different countries. Brazil and the United States of America were the top contributing countries, and the University of Sydney was the leading organization. Papers published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation received the highest number of citations, while author Gordon Ramage from the University of Glasgow received the highest number of citations. Conclusions: The bibliometric analysis revealed that the number of denture stomatitis-related publications indexed in the Scopus database is increasing globally. Since 2007, there has been an increase in research interest regarding denture stomatitis, with more publications from several countries expected to be published in different journals. Purpose: The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the top-cited articles, countries, journals, authors, and papers published related to dental polymers and their application. Research articles published from 1962 to 2021 on dental polymers and their application were identified using the Scopus database. Methodology: Bibliographical data related to the abstract, citations, keywords, and other relevant information was extracted using different combinations of keywords. Further evaluation and visualization of the selected data were performed with the help of various tools, including MS Excel, Microsoft Word, Google open refine, Biblioshiny, BibExcel, and VOS viewer. An initial search revealed 351 documents, of which 327 were chosen for further analysis. Results: A substantial increase in the number of publications related to this domain was observed. The United States was the most prolific country, while the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece was identified as the leading institute. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis can guide researchers, funding agencies, industry, and institutions.

BACKGROUND: Hyperplastic candidiasis (HC) is a chronic infection of oral mucosa caused by Candida. Owing to its potential for malignant transformation, its intervention requires attention. Conventional surgical resection might lead to irreversible damage and impact the patient's quality of life. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) alone and in combination with topical antifungal therapy (i.e., nystatin [combination therapy]) in comparison with nystatin and surgical resection for the treatment of HC. METHODS: Forty subjects with clinical and histopathological diagnoses of HC were included in the study. Four study groups, with 10 participants each, were formed as follows: Group-I - receiving antifungal agent [nystatin]; Group-II - receiving surgical resection; Group-III - receiving PDT; and Group-IV - receiving 5-ALA-mediated PDT and nystatin [combination therapy]. Salivary and mucosal samples were collected for the quantification of Candida albicans and the treatment responses to different interventions were recorded at week-4, week-6, and week-8 after finishing therapies. RESULTS: At the 3rd follow-up (i.e., at end of the 8th week after the interventions), complete improvement in 3 (30%), 2 (20%), 1 (10%), and 5 (50%) patients in group-I, group-II, group-III, and group-IV, respectively was observed. A statistically significant difference was obtained when the intervention responses were compared at week-4 (p<0.01), week-6 (p<0.01), and week-8 (p<0.0001) follow-ups in group-I, group-II, and group-IV subjects. At the 8-week follow-up regarding the salivary and mucosal samples, the lowest colony-forming units/milliliter score of C. albicans was observed in group-IV subjects. CONCLUSION: The application of 5-ALA-mediated PDT in combination with nystatin gel possesses the potential as a well-tolerated and safe therapeutic modality for the treatment of patients with HC.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different salivary pH on flexural strength, hardness, and surface roughness of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milled and three-dimensional (3D)-printed denture base resins. METHODS: One heat-polymerized, two CAD/CAM milled (IvoCad, AvaDent), and two 3D-printed (FormLabs, NextDent) denture base resins were fabricated and divided into five groups (n = 10) according to the solutions: three groups were immersed in different salivary pH (5.7, 7.0, or 8.3), one group was immersed in distilled water (DW) as a positive control, and one group had no immersion (negative control). All immersions were performed at 37°C for 90 days. Flexural strength, hardness, and surface roughness were measured before and after immersion. Data was analyzed with analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After immersion, all specimens had lower flexural strength values when compared with those with no immersion. Comparing the immersion groups, the highest flexural strength value (93.96 ± 3.18 MPa) was recorded with IvoCad after immersion in DW while the lowest value (60.43 ± 2.66 MPa) was recorded with NextDent after being immersed in 7.0 pH saliva. All specimens had significant decrease in hardness except IvoCad and AvaDent specimens where both presented the highest surface hardness (53.76 ± 1.60 Vickers hardness number [VHN]) after immersion in DW while NextDent showed the lowest hardness value (24.91 ± 2.13 VHN) after being immersed in 8.3 pH saliva. There was statistically significant difference between the baseline and different artificial salivary pH solutions in terms of surfaces roughness, with the highest surface roughness were found in 3D-printed resin materials. CONCLUSION: After exposure to artificial saliva with different salivary pH, the milled CAD/CAM denture base resins showed higher flexural strength, hardness, and lesser surface roughness than conventional and 3D-printed denture base resins.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Minimally invasive dentistry is a technique for the maximal preservation of healthy tooth structures and has been a focus of attention in dental research. However, a detailed bibliometric analysis focusing on research related to minimally invasive dentistry is lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this bibliometric analysis was to analyze leading countries and organizations and to identify the preferred journals, the most productive authors, and the most commonly used keywords in the field of minimally invasive dentistry. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The search was performed by using the Scopus database, and publications pertinent to the field of minimally invasive dentistry from 1994 to 2021 were identified. A bibliometric analysis with reference to citations and documents, authors, journals, and keywords was performed. A total of 391 articles published in Scopus indexed journals between 1994 and January 2021 were analyzed by using a software program. RESULTS: A continuing yet steady increase in research publications was identified, with a substantial increase in publications since 2013. The United States and Germany were the countries that published the most articles (98 and 46, respectively), articles that received 1877 and 806 citations, respectively. Cardiff University, UK, was the most productive organization that received 212 citations. The most highly cited articles were from the Q1 category. Blum from King's College London was the highest-cited author in this field. CONCLUSIONS: Considerable advancement has been made in minimally invasive dentistry, as demonstrated by the increase in the number of publications linked with collaboration among various authors, nations, and institutes. This citation analysis gives a perspective on the progress of research in the field of minimally invasive dentistry and allows identification of the most significant and pertinent research areas.

Denture base fracture is one of the most annoying problems for both prosthodontists and patients. Denture repair is considered to be an appropriate solution rather than fabricating a new denture. Digital denture fabrication is widely spreading nowadays. However, the repair strength of CAD-CAM milled and 3D-printed resins is lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface treatment on the shear bond strength (SBS) of conventionally and digitally fabricated denture base resins. One l heat-polymerized (Major base20), two milled (IvoCad, AvaDent), and three 3D-printed (ASIGA, NextDent, FormLabs) denture base resins were used to fabricate 10 × 10 × 3.3 acrylic specimens (N = 180, 30/resin, n = 10). Specimens were divided into three groups according to surface treatment; no treatment (control), monomer application (MMA), or sandblasting (SB) surface treatments were performed. Repair resin was bonded to the resin surface followed by thermocycling (5000 cycles). SBS was tested using a universal testing machine where a load was applied at the resin interface (0.5 mm/min). Data were collected and analyzed using ANOVA and a post hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05). SEM was used for failure type and topography of fractured surfaces analysis. The heat-polymerized and CAD-CAM milled groups showed close SBS values without significance (p > 0.05), while the 3D-printed resin groups showed a significant decrease in SBS (p < 0.0001). SBS increased significantly with monomer application (p < 0.0001) except for the ASIGA and NextDent groups, which showed no significant difference compared to the control groups (p > 0.05). All materials with SB surface treatment showed a significant increase in SBS when compared with the controls and MMA application (p < 0.0001). Adhesive failure type was observed in the control groups, which dramatically changed to cohesive or mixed in groups with surface treatment. The SBS of 3D-printed resin was decreased when compared with the conventional and CAD-CAM milled resin. Regardless of the material type, SB and MMA applications increased the SBS of the repaired resin and SB showed high performance.
