RESUMEN

Coccidiosis at rose veal starter farms is often diagnosed however, this was the first study performed considering this topic on this type of rearing unit. The objective of this study was to identify Eimeria species faecal shedding patterns at ten Dutch rose veal starter farms during rearing. Further objectives were to investigate associations with (gut) health, production and management decisions. Faecal samples from twelve randomly selected calves per farm were collected weekly during 9 consecutive weeks. Thereafter samples were pooled in a predetermined composition of six. These calves were clinically evaluated every sample visit and weighed at the first and last visit. Laboratory tests included a flotation test of the samples. If this yielded Eimeria oocysts, both oocysts per gram feces (OPG) and species differentiation were established using a modified McMaster method. Management parameters and technical herd results were identified after finalizing the study period using a questionnaire. Studied patterns in oocyst shedding included the pool's cumulated OPG, maximum OPG level and the number of sample days (SD) that OPG exceeded a confirmed level. Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate analysis. Associated (p < 0.10) OPG patterns considering rumen fill, faecal consistency and average daily weight gain (ADG) were tested using a model with herd included as random effect. RESULTS: on all ten farms E. alabamensis, E.bovis and E. zuernii besides non-pathogenic species were identified, often as mixed infections. Peak OPG occurred predominately at SD 21 and 28 (E. alabamensis and E. bovis), and at SD 42 (E. zuernii). In 16 pools, OPG levels ≥500 for E. bovis or E. zuernii, were found. Significant correlation (p < 0.0001) showed between the log10 OPG of pathogenic Eimeria and of all Eimeria species. Multivariate analysis showed significant correlation between cumulative faecal consistency scores and cumulative log10 OPG of pathogenic Eimeria species (ß = 0.16; p = 0.008). Pools exceeding 750 OPG for E. bovis showed 93 g lower ADG and pools experiencing ≥2 SD with >1000 OPG for E. alabamensis 141 g lower ADG. From the questionnaire we identified lower cumulated OPG of all Eimeria species except for E. bovis at farms where the units were cleaned before arrival of the calves. CONCLUSION: As a rule, on Dutch rose veal starter farms, mixed Eimeria infections occur, but shedding patterns differ between farms. Clinical and growth performance is related to OPG patterns found. Cleaning units before arrival of calves lowers oocyst shedding during the rearing period.

RESUMEN

Respiratory tract infections (bovine respiratory disease) are a major concern in calf rearing. The objective of this study was to identify pathogen-specific risk factors associated with epidemic respiratory disease in calves. A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 128 outbreaks (29 dairy, 58 dairy-mixed, and 41 beef) in Belgium (2016-2018). A semiquantitative PCR for 7 respiratory pathogens was done on a pooled nonendoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage sample for each herd. Potential risk factors were collected by questionnaire and derived from the national cattle registration databank. Most outbreaks occurred between October and March, and single and multiple viral infections were detected in 58.6% (75/128) and 13.3% (17/128), respectively. Bovine coronavirus (BCV) was the most frequently isolated virus (38.4%), followed by bovine respiratory syncytial virus (bRSV; 29.4%) and parainfluenzavirus type 3 (PI-3; 8.1%). Mycoplasma bovis, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni were detected in 33.3, 41.2, 89.1, and 36.4% of the herds, respectively. Specific risk factors for BCV detection were detection of M. haemolytica [odds ratio (OR) = 2.8 (95% confidence interval = 1.1-7.5)], increasing herd size [OR = 1.3 (1.0-1.8) for each increase with 100 animals] and detection of BCV by antigen ELISA on feces in calves in the last year [OR = 3.6 (1.2-11.1)]. A seasonal effect was shown for bRSV only {more in winter compared with autumn [OR = 10.3 (2.8-37.5)]}. Other factors associated with bRSV were PI-3 detection [OR = 13.4 (2.1-86.0)], prevalence of calves with respiratory disease [OR = 1.02 (1.00-1.04) per 1% increase], and number of days with respiratory signs before sampling [OR = 0.99 (0.98-0.99) per day increase]. Next to its association with BCV, M. haemolytica was more frequently detected in herds with 5 to 10 animals per pen [OR = 8.0 (1.4-46.9)] compared with <5 animals, and in herds with sawdust as bedding [OR = 18.3 (1.8-191.6)]. Also, for H. somni, housing on sawdust was a risk factor [OR = 5.2 (1.2-23.0)]. Purchase of cattle [OR = 2.9 (1.0-8.0)] and housing of recently purchased animals in the same airspace [OR = 5.0 (1.5-16.5)] were risk factors for M. bovis. This study identified pathogen-specific risk factors that might be useful for the development of customized control and prevention and for the design of decision support tools to justify antimicrobial use by predicting the most likely pathogen before sampling results are available.

The complexity and diversity of microstructure involved in titanium alloys make it rather difficult to quantitatively describe defect evolution due to irradiation. This paper focuses on defect evolutions of commercially pure titanium grade 2 under Ti2+ ion irradiation considering the effect of dose (0.6 and 3 dpa), temperature (300°C and 430°C) and flux (15:1 ratio). An irradiation damage profile was predicted using SRIM software to obtain a homogeneous damage on at least 500 nm depth for TEM observations and simulated using JANNUS-Saclay facility. The details regarding the quantification methodologies of the defects from dark field images are provided, as are the origins of the associated uncertainties. In addition to a tangled dislocation network, presence of the -type and -component loops is observed. The latter was scarcely reported in the literature in the case of titanium alloys. At low temperature, the size distribution of the -type dislocation loops remained similar regardless of the dose and flux whereas these parameters have highly influence at 430°C. A widening of the size distribution and an increase of the threshold incubation dose (TID) was noted with the temperature. In the case of the -component loops, it was shown that the nucleation occurred in spite of the 0.6 dpa low dose.

RESUMEN

A pulse-echo ultrasonic method is presented to measure elastic parameter variations during thermal loading with high accuracy. Using a dry coupling configuration dedicated to high temperature investigation, this technique has been applied on 6061-T6 aluminium samples up to 220 degrees C. Experimental settings are described to assess the measurement reproducibility estimated at a value of 0.2%. Consequently, the anisotropy of this aluminium between the rolling direction and two orthogonal axes has been clearly detected and also measured versus temperature. As regards the temperature dependence of these elastic parameters, these results are compared with the estimations of the Young's modulus obtained during mechanical tests in conditions of low cycle fatigue (LCF). The same linear variation versus temperature is found but with a shift of 7GPa. This difference has been classically attributed to systematic experimental error sources and to the distinction existing between dynamic and static elastic modulus.
