INTRODUCTION: Alcohol related liver disease (ALD) affects diverse communities with individual and social characteristics that can impact outcomes. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) assigns a score between 0 and 1, where higher scores represent an increased risk of social vulnerability. We sought to assess the impact of SVI on outcomes of patients hospitalized with ALD with access to social support services. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Hospitalizations for ALD at our institution between March and August 2019 were reviewed. All patients were assigned an SVI score based on their residential census tract. Per our standard practice, patients were screened by care coordinators to identify needs for rehabilitation counseling, and care coordination after discharge. Demographics, hepatic decompensation, critical care needs, readmission, and mortality were compared. RESULTS: Among 73 patients admitted for alcoholic hepatitis, 32 had a low SVI and 42 had a high SVI. African American patients were more likely to have a higher SVI (35% vs 0%, p=<0.001). No significant difference in outcomes based on SVI was noted. There were 393 patients admitted for alcoholic cirrhosis including 166 with a low SVI and 227 with a high SVI. Patients that were African American (23.6% vs 5.5%, p=<0.001) or disabled (41.4% vs 29.5%, p=0.008) had a higher SVI. No significant difference in outcomes based on SVI was noted. CONCLUSION: Most patients admitted for ALD had a high SVI; however, SVI did not impact hospitalization outcomes.

Global optimization techniques are increasingly preferred over human-driven methods in the design of electromagnetic structures such as metasurfaces, and careful construction and parameterization of the physical structure is critical in ensuring computational efficiency and convergence of the optimization algorithm to a globally optimal solution. While many design variables in physical systems take discrete values, optimization algorithms often benefit from a continuous design space. This work demonstrates the use of level set functions as a continuous basis for designing material distributions for metasurface arrays and introduces an improved parameterization which is termed the periodic level set function. We explore the use of alternate norms in the definition of the level set function and define a new pseudo-inverse technique for upsampling basis coefficients with these norms. The level set method is compared to the fragmented parameterization and shows improved electromagnetic responses for two dissimilar cost functions: a narrowband objective and a broadband objective. Finally, we manufacture an optimized level set metasurface and measure its scattering parameters to demonstrate real-world performance.

Several retinal degenerations affect the human central retina, which is primarily comprised of cones and is essential for high acuity and color vision. Transplanting cone photoreceptors is a promising strategy to replace degenerated cones in this region. Although this approach has been investigated in a handful of animal models, commonly used rodent models lack a cone-rich region and larger models can be expensive and inaccessible, impeding the translation of therapies. Here, we transplanted dissociated GFP-expressing photoreceptors from retinal organoids differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells into the subretinal space of damaged and undamaged cone-dominant 13-lined ground squirrel eyes. Transplanted cell survival was documented via noninvasive high-resolution imaging and immunohistochemistry to confirm the presence of human donor photoreceptors for up to 4 months posttransplantation. These results demonstrate the utility of a cone-dominant rodent model for advancing the clinical translation of cell replacement therapies.

IMPORTANCE: Neurospora is a quintessential tip-growing organism, which is well known for packaging and longitudinal transport of tip-building blocks. Thus far, however, little attention has been paid to the co-essential process of reclamation, that is-taking apart of upstream, older structural elements, otherwise known as "autophagy". We are not yet prepared to set out the chemistry of that elaborate process, but its morphological start alone is worthy of attention. Carbon starvation triggers significant autophagic changes, beginning with prolific vacuolation along the plasma membrane, and eventual filling of 70% (or more) of cytoplasmic volume. Additionally, the Neurospora plasma membrane elaborates a variety of phagophores which themselves often look lytic. These have either dual enclosing membranes, like the familiar autophagosomes, can be doubled and have four wrapping membranes, or can be compounded with multiple membrane layers. These reclamation processes must be accommodated by the mechanism of tip growth.

OBJECTIVE: Despite decades of research, neuropsychological tests (NPTs) that clearly differentiate between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and late-life depression (LLD) have yet to be agreed upon. Given this gap in knowledge and the rapid deployment of disease-modifying drugs for the two disorders, accurate clinical diagnosis using evidence-based assessment is essential. This study aims to systematically examine the literature to identify NPTs that would be able to differentiate AD and LLD. METHOD: Databases and bibliographies were searched to identify articles for analysis. Two major inclusion criteria were that the studies compared neuropsychological functioning of AD versus LLD using normed NPTs and provided data for effect size calculation. Risk of bias was minimized by having independent coders for all steps in the review. RESULTS: Forty-one studies met inclusion criteria (N = 2,797) and provided effect sizes for tests that were classified as belonging to 15 domains of functioning. The two groups were well differentiated by tasks of delayed contextual verbal memory as compared to immediate or non-contextual memory, recognition cueing, confrontation naming, visuospatial construction, and conceptualization. Specific NPTs that appear to be useful for differential diagnosis include the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test-Delayed Recognition; Boston Naming Test; the Dementia Rating Scale's memory, conceptualization, and construction subscales; and the CERAD Constructional Praxis. CONCLUSIONS: The NPTs highlighted in this systematic review could be used as a relatively simple and cost-effective method to differentiate between patients with cognitive dysfunction due to AD versus LLD.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial stressors related to the coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic increased alcohol consumption. The effect on patients with alcohol-related liver diseases remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hospitalizations at a tertiary care center due to alcohol-related liver disease from March 1 through August 31 in 2019 (pre-pandemic cohort) and 2020 (pandemic cohort) were reviewed retrospectively. Differences in patient demographics, disease features, and outcomes were estimated in patients with alcoholic hepatitis utilizing T-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, Chi-square and Fisher Exact Tests and Anova models and logistic regression models in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. RESULTS: 146 patients with alcoholic hepatitis and 305 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis were admitted during the pandemic compared to 75 and 396 in the pre-pandemic cohort. Despite similar median Maddrey Scores (41.20 vs. 37.45, p=0.57), patients were 25% less likely to receive steroids during the pandemic. Patients with alcoholic hepatitis admitted during the pandemic were more likely to have hepatic encephalopathy (0.13; 95% CI:0.01, 0.25), variceal hemorrhage (0.14; 95% CI:0.04, 0.25), require oxygen (0.11; 95% CI:0.01, 0.21), vasopressors (OR:3.49; 95% CI:1.27, 12.01) and hemodialysis (OR:3.70; 95% CI:1.22, 15.13). On average, patients with alcoholic cirrhosis had MELD-Na scores 3.77 points higher (95% CI:1.05, 13.46) as compared to the pre-pandemic and had higher odds of experiencing hepatic encephalopathy (OR:1.34; 95% CI:1.04, 1.73), spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (OR:1.88; 95% CI:1.03, 3.43), ascites (OR:1.40, 95% CI:1.10, 1.79), vasopressors (OR:1.68, 95% CI:1.14, 2.46) or inpatient mortality (OR:2.00, 95% CI:1.33, 2.99) than the pre-pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with alcohol-related liver disease experienced worse outcomes during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Biologic agents have revolutionized treatment of immune mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). However, despite the benefits of treatment, there is limited data on its use during pregnancy leading to significant variation in practices. We evaluated maternal, neonatal, and disease-related outcomes in pregnant women with IMIDs, comparing those with biologic exposure during pregnancy to those without exposure. Our hypothesis was that there would be no difference in outcomes between the two groups. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at a single tertiary care center including women with Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis (PS/PsA) who delivered between 2010 and 2018 at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Conditions were identified by ICD-9/ICD-10 code and confirmed by chart review. Demographic data, pregnancy outcomes and disease-related data were collected. RESULTS: There were 338 pregnancies including 100 with CD, 74 with UC, 15 with AS, 61 with RA, and 90 with PS/PsA. 23% of IMID patients had biologic exposure (biologic use within 3 months of conception) and 18% continued therapy during pregnancy. Those with biologic exposure had increased risk of post-partum disease flare (OR 3.44; 95% CI 1.29, 9.15) and were less likely to breastfeed (OR 0.44; 95% CI 0.23, 0.87). In subgroup analysis of patients with IBD, those with biologic exposure also had increased risk of post-partum flare (OR 4.55; 95% CI 1.27, 16.35). Maternal and neonatal pregnancy outcomes were similar. CONCLUSION: Among pregnant women with IMIDs, those that continued biologics during pregnancy had increased rates of major infection, disease related hospital admission, glucocorticoid use, and disease flare within 6 months post-partum, without any significant change in maternal or neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prompt diagnosis of vascular compromise following pediatric liver transplantation and restoration of oxygen delivery to the liver improves organ survival. vis-DRS allows for real-time measurement of liver tissue saturation. METHODS: The current study used vis-DRS to determine changes in liver saturation during clinically relevant conditions of reduced oxygen delivery. In an in vivo swine model (n = 15), we determined liver tissue saturation (St O2 ) during stepwise reduction in hepatic artery flow, different inspiratory oxygen fraction (FiO2 ), and increasing hemodilution. A custom vis-DRS probe was placed directly on the organ. RESULTS: Liver tissue saturation decreased significantly with a decrease in hepatic artery flow. A reduction in hepatic artery flow to 25% of baseline reduced the St O2 by 15.3 ± 1.4% at FiO2 0.3 (mean ± SE, p < .0013), and by 8.3 ± 1.9% at FiO2 1.0 (p = .0013). After hemodilution to 7-8 g/dl, St O2 was reduced by 31.8% ± 2.7%, p < .001 (FiO2 0.3) and 26.6 ± 2.7%, p < .001 (FiO2 : 1.0) respectively. Portal venous saturation during low hepatic artery flow was consistently higher at FiO2 1.0. The gradient between portal venous saturation and liver tissue saturation was consistently greater at lower hemoglobin levels (7.0 ± 1.6% per g/dl hemoglobin, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Vis-DRS showed prompt changes in liver tissue saturation with decreases in hepatic artery blood flow. At hepatic artery flows below 50% of baseline, liver saturation depended on FiO2 and hemoglobin concentration suggesting that during hepatic artery occlusion, packed red blood cell transfusion and increased FiO2 may be useful measures to reduce hypoxic damage until surgical revascularization.

Background: Concerns regarding the potential iatrogenic effects of suicide assessment have long impeded suicide research. Aims: We sought to examine the effects of an intensive, suicide-focused assessment protocol on mood, suicidality, and urges to harm oneself or others. Method: Participants were adults admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit for recent suicidal ideation or behavior, or reasons unrelated to suicide. Our study protocol included clinical interviews evaluating suicide history and laboratory tasks with suicide-related stimuli. We modified an existing measure to create a brief, 6-item interview, the Assessment Session Check-In, which was administered before and after research procedures. Results: These indicated overall reductions in distress, suicidal intent, and urges to harm oneself or others from preassessment to postassessment. Postassessment reductions in stress predicted lower likelihood of a suicide attempt at follow-up. Limitations: Although beneficial to examine a high-risk sample, it is possible that an intensive suicide-focused protocol could prove more problematic for those with lower baseline levels of negative affect and suicidal thoughts. Conclusions: Results challenge the belief that assessing suicide elevates distress or suicidality, even among a high-risk sample of adults admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit.

This study describes a theory-informed application of data science methods to analyze the quality of reflections made in a health professions education program over time. One thousand five hundred reflections written by a cohort of 369 dental students over 4 years of academic study were evaluated for an overall measure of reflection depth (No, Shallow, Deep) and the presence of six theoretically-indicated elements of reflection quality (Description, Analysis, Feeling, Perspective, Evaluation, Outcome). Machine learning models were then built to automatically detect these qualities based on linguistic features in the reflections. Results showed a dramatic increase from No to Shallow reflections from the start to end of year one (20% → 66%), but only a limited gradual rise in Deep reflections across all four years (2% → 26%). The presence of all six reflection elements increased over time, but inclusion of Feelings and Analysis remained relatively low even at the end of year four (found in 44% and 60% of reflections respectively). Models were able to reliably detect the presence of Description (κTEST = 0.70) and Evaluation (κTEST = 0.65) in reflections; models to detect the presence of Analysis (κTEST = 0.50), Feelings (κTEST = 0.54), and Perspectives (κTEST = 0.53) showed moderate performance; the model to detect Outcomes suffered from overfitting (κTRAIN = 0.90, κTEST = 0.53). A classifier for overall depth built on the reflection elements showed moderate performance across all time periods (κTEST > 0.60) but relied almost exclusively on the presence of Description. Implications for the conceptualization of reflection quality and providing personalized learning support to help students develop reflective skills are discussed.

Performance on an emotional stop-signal task designed to assess emotional response inhibition has been associated with Negative Urgency and psychopathology, particularly self-injurious behaviors. Indeed, difficulty inhibiting prepotent negative responses to aversive stimuli on the emotional stop-signal task (i.e. poor negative emotional response inhibition) partially explains the association between Negative Urgency and non-suicidal self-injury. Here, we combine existing data sets from clinical (hospitalised psychiatric inpatients) and non-clinical (community/student participants) samples aged 18-65 years (N = 450) to examine the psychometric properties of this behavioural task and evaluate hypotheses that emotional stop-signal task metrics relate to distinct impulsive traits among participants who also completed the UPPS-P (n = 223). We specifically predicted associations between worse negative emotional response inhibition (i.e. commission errors during stop-signal trials representing negative reactions to unpleasant images) and Negative Urgency, whereas commission errors to positive stimuli - reflecting worse positive emotional response inhibition - would relate to Positive Urgency. Results support the emotional stop-signal task's convergent and discriminant validity: as hypothesised, poor negative emotional response inhibition was specifically associated with Negative Urgency and no other impulsive traits on the UPPS-P. However, we did not find the hypothesised association between positive emotional response inhibition and Positive Urgency. Correlations between emotional stop-signal task performance and self-report measures were the modest, similar to other behavioural tasks. Participants who completed the emotional stop-signal task twice (n = 61) additionally provide preliminary evidence for test-retest reliability. Together, findings suggest adequate reliability and validity of the emotional stop-signal task to derive candidate behavioural markers of neurocognitive functioning associated with Negative Urgency and psychopathology.

Childhood abuse and/or neglect adversely influences development of neurocognitive systems that regulate affect and behavior. Poor inhibitory control over emotional reactions is thus one potential pathway from maltreatment to suicide. Adult psychiatric inpatients completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and an emotional stop-signal task indexing negative emotional action termination (NEAT): the ability to inhibit ongoing motor reactions to aversive stimuli triggered by negative affect. Clinical interviews assessed suicidal thoughts and behaviors during hospitalization (n = 131) and at follow-up assessments 6 months later (n = 87). Our primary aim was to examine whether maltreatment history and NEAT explain overlapping variance in suicidal behaviors (1) retrospectively and (2) 6 months following hospital discharge. Contrary to prediction, childhood maltreatment was unrelated to history of suicidal behaviors. However, NEAT was consistently associated with prior suicidal acts, even controlling for suicidal ideation and demographic covariates. NEAT similarly contributed to the prediction of post-discharge suicidal behaviors, whereas we found no effect of maltreatment history. The present study suggests that NEAT captures suicide risk independently of childhood maltreatment. Results implicated NEAT impairment specifically, rather than broader response inhibition deficits (e.g., to positive stimuli), in past and future suicidal behaviors. These findings provide preliminary support for NEAT as a behavioral vulnerability marker for suicide, with implications for understanding links between maltreatment history and suicidal acts.

PROBLEM: Limited data exists on the temporal trend of the Sars-CoV-2 immunologic response and duration of protection following natural infection. We sought to investigate the presence and duration of Sars-CoV-2 serum antibodies in obstetrical healthcare workers (HCW) on serial assessments over a 6-month period, and to assess rates of vaccine acceptance and reported vaccine side effects among this cohort. METHOD OF STUDY: A prospective cohort study of a convenience sample of obstetrical HCWs at a tertiary hospital. Serum Sars-CoV-2 antibodies for Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) were measured longitudinally at four intervals: baseline, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months. Participants completed voluntary surveys on COVID19 testing, high-risk exposures, vaccine acceptance, and vaccine side effects. RESULTS: One hundred twenty-six of 150 (84%) HCWs who volunteered for participation completed all four blood draws. Prevalence of seropositive HCWs based on positive Sars-CoV-2 IgG antibodies increased from 2% at baseline to 31% at 12 weeks but declined to 21% by 6 months. Forty-two percent (19/43) of the participants considered seropositive for Sars-CoV-2 IgG antibodies at any of the initial three blood draws converted to seronegative status at the 6-month follow-up. Eighty-seven percent (72/83) of participants who responded to a follow-up survey were willing to accept the COVID19 vaccine. Rates of acceptance did not differ by participant antibody status. Those that experienced symptoms with the first injection were more likely to have positive Sars-CoV-2 IgG antibodies (36.8% vs. 9.6%, p = .01). CONCLUSION: Sars-CoV-2 IgG antibodies wane over time and may not provide prolonged and robust immune protection. This underscores the importance of vaccination and continued research in this area while the COVID19 pandemic continues.

Purpose: To assess the performance of two spectral-domain optical coherence tomography-angiography systems in a natural model of hypoperfusion: the hibernating thirteen-lined ground squirrel (13-LGS). Methods: Using a high-speed (130 kHz) OCT-A system (HS-OCT-A) and a commercial OCT (36 kHz; Bioptigen Envisu; BE-OCT-A), we imaged the 13-LGS retina throughout its hibernation cycle. Custom software was used to extract the superior, middle, and deep capillary plexus (SCP, MCP, and DCP, respectively). The retinal vasculature was also imaged with adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) during torpor to visualize individual blood cells. Finally, correlative histology with immunolabeled or DiI-stained vasculature was performed. Results: During euthermia, vessel density was similar between devices for the SCP and MCP (P = 0.88, 0.72, respectively), with a small difference in the DCP (-1.63 ± 1.54%, P = 0.036). Apparent capillary dropout was observed during torpor, but recovered after forced arousal, and this effect was exaggerated in high-speed OCT-A imaging. Based on cell flux measurements with AOSLO, increasing OCT-A scan duration by ∼1000× would avoid the apparent capillary dropout artifact. High correspondence between OCT-A (during euthermia) and histology enabled lateral scale calibration. Conclusions: While the HS-OCT-A system provides a more efficient workflow, the shorter interscan interval may render it more susceptible to the apparent capillary dropout artifact. Disambiguation between capillary dropout and transient ischemia can have important implications in the management of retinal disease and warrants additional diagnostics. Translational Relevance: The 13-LGS provides a natural model of hypoperfusion that may prove valuable in modeling the utility of OCT-A in human pathologies associated with altered blood flow.

SIGNIFICANCE: Real-time information about oxygen delivery to the hepatic graft is important to direct care and diagnose vascular compromise in the immediate post-transplant period. AIM: The current study was designed to determine the utility of visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (vis-DRS) for measuring liver tissue saturation in vivo. APPROACH: A custom-built vis-DRS probe was calibrated using phantoms with hemoglobin (Hb) and polystyrene microspheres. Ex vivo (extracorporeal circulation) and in vivo protocols were used in a swine model (n = 15) with validation via blood gas analysis. RESULTS: In vivo absorption and scattering measured by vis-DRS with and without biliverdin correction correlated closely between analyses. Lin's concordance correlation coefficients are 0.991 for µa and 0.959 for µs ' . Hb measured by blood test and vis-DRS with (R2 = 0.81) and without (R2 = 0.85) biliverdin correction were compared. Vis-DRS data obtained from the ex vivo protocol plotted against the PO2 derived from blood gas analysis showed a good fit for a Hill coefficient of 1.67 and P50 = 34 mmHg (R2 = 0.81). A conversion formula was developed to account for the systematic deviation, which resulted in a goodness-of-fit R2 = 0.76 with the expected oxygen dissociation curve. CONCLUSIONS: We show that vis-DRS allows for real-time measurement of liver tissue saturation, an indicator for liver perfusion and oxygen delivery.

The current study investigated whether impaired emotional response inhibition to self-harm stimuli is a risk factor for real-time nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) urges. Participants were 60 university students with a history of repetitive NSSI. At baseline, participants completed an emotional stop-signal task assessing response inhibition to self-harm stimuli. Participants subsequently completed an ecological momentary assessment protocol in which they reported negative affect, urgency, and NSSI urge intensity three times daily over a ten-day period. Impaired emotional response inhibition to self-harm stimuli did not evidence a main effect on the strength of momentary NSSI urges. However, emotional response inhibition to self-harm images interacted with momentary negative affect to predict the strength of real-time NSSI urges, after adjusting for emotional response inhibition to neutral images. Our findings suggest that emotional response inhibition deficits specifically to self-harm stimuli may pose vulnerability for increased NSSI urge intensity during real-time, state-level negative affect.

According to the 8th edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide), rodent cage accessories, such as filter tops, should be sanitized at least once every 2 wk. We performed a study to test the hypothesis that organic contamination (measured by ATP content, expressed as relative light units (RLU)) of cage accessories (wire bar inserts and filter top lids) does not differ at 2 wk (14 d) as compared with 30, 60, and 90-d time points after cage change even when in constant use. An additional time point for filter top lids of 180 d after cage change was also evaluated. Eight groups were studied: the wire bar inserts and filter top lids used for mice and rats, in both static and individually ventilated cages (IVC). When analyzing data from both mouse and rat static and IVC caging, we found that the mean RLU values for mouse IVC and rat static and IVC cage components were below 100,000 RLU at the 14-d time point. The mean value for the mouse static group was slightly above 100,000 RLU at this time point. Based on this observation, we considered 100,000 RLU to be an appropriate actionable level. We concluded that changing wire bar inserts at least every 14 d, as recommended in the Guide for sanitizing these components in mouse and rat static cages, may be considered acceptable. This interval could be extended for mouse and rat IVC cages up to 90 d while remaining below this limit. Filter top lids for mouse static cages should be changed at least every 30 d, but static rat and IVC mouse/rat filter top lids could be changed up to every 180 d, while still staying below this actionable level of contamination.

A variety of neuropsychological changes secondary to heart failure have been documented in the literature. However, what remains unclear are which neuropsychological abilities are the most impacted by heart failure and what tests have the sensitivity to measure that impact. Eight databases were searched for articles that examined the neuropsychological functioning of patients with heart failure. Some of the inclusion criteria were articles had to have a heart failure group with a demographically comparable control group and standardized neuropsychological testing. Exclusion criteria included articles with a heart failure group with any other type of major organ failure, or comparisons that were between different classes of heart failure rather than between a heart failure and non-heart failure group. A total of 33 articles met the inclusion criteria (total heart failure sample n = 8900) and provided effect size data for 20 neuropsychological domains. All observed domain-level differences between heart failure and non-heart failure groups were statistically significant, except for simple motor functioning and confrontation naming. The greatest differences in performance were in executive functioning, global cognition, complex psychomotor speed, and verbal memory. The highest effect sizes came from Trail-Making Test-Part B, CAMCOG, Symbol Digit Modality Test, and California Verbal Learning Test. The neuropsychological patterns of heart failure suggested diffuse cognitive involvement, with higher-level processes being most affected. It is important to track neurocognition in this clinical population since neuropsychological impairment is prevalent, and screening measures appear to be reliable. Such screening and further assessment would inform future medical treatment and may improve patient care management.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an annual oral-systemic health interprofessional education (IPE) clinical simulation and case study experience with nurse practitioner/midwifery (NP/MW), dental (DDS), medical (MD), and pharmacy (PharmD) students. METHODS: The Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale (ICCAS) was used to measure students' self-reported attainment of interprofessional competencies before and after the IPE experience. Pre- and post-test surveys were completed by NP/MW, DDS, MD, and PharmD student cohorts from 2017 to 2019. Students also had the opportunity to provide qualitative feedback about their experience at post-test. Data were collected from IPE faculty facilitators to assess their perception of the value of the Teaching Oral-Systemic Health (TOSH) program. RESULTS: Student ICCAS results demonstrated statistically significant improvement in self-reported interprofessional competencies among all types of students across all 3 years (P < 0.001); qualitative student comments reflected positive experiences with the TOSH program. Survey data from IPE faculty facilitators supported the value of the IPE experience for all students. CONCLUSIONS: The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the TOSH program in using oral-systemic health as a clinical exemplar to develop interprofessional competencies. The 2017-2019 data reinforce the credibility of scaling the TOSH model for developing interprofessional competencies with students from different health professions.

RESUMEN

To state that the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has broadly and deeply impacted our lives is an understatement. Since it first showed up on our radar in December 2019, the new coronavirus has wreaked havoc on virtually all businesses and industries across the globe. The impact is equally felt in developing, developed, industrialized, rural, rich, and poor countries and communities, irrespective of how well-prepared those countries and communities felt they were 9 months ago. To this day we are still learning to prepare for, respond to, and adapt to the broad and deep impact of this virus. This essay presents different perspectives on the impact of the novel coronavirus to dentistry, through the lenses of a private practice-based general dentist, a nursing home-based public health dentist, and a school of dentistry clinical director. The goal of the essay is to share our experiences and challenges, as well as highlight our capacity to respond to a crisis with resilience, determination, creativity, inventivity, and, most importantly, humility and altruism.
