BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of styloid process (SP) patterns in Saudi population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 2010 digital panoramic radiographs (PRs) selected randomly for adult patients who visited five major hospitals in the Qassim region, Saudi Arabia, PRs were examined to detect any SP elongation. Data were collected and analysed using SPSS v22. RESULTS: In this study, positive SP elongation was seen in 25.4% of the total cases, 14.2% and 11.2% male and female, respectively. The mean age was 34.3 ± 13.9 years. Type I was found in 19.1%, type II in 1.7%, and type III in 4.6% of the cases. Normal SP was seen in 74.7%. Patients between 30 and 50 years were significantly more affected with type I pattern. Normal SP was reported mostly in the youngest age group 18-24 years, in 31% of total cases. CONCLUSIONS: Styloid process has many patterns and variations that could be detected on digital PRs taken daily in most of dental clinics. Dentists should be trained to detect patients with such variation so that signs associated with Eagle syndrome are not misinterpreted.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the expression of cell proliferating marker, anti-proliferating cell nuclear antigen (anti-PCNA) and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) markers (anti-STRO-1 and anti-CD44) in periapical periodontitis and their role in the healing of periapical lesion in periapical periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety Sprague-Dawley male rats (100 g) were divided into 3 groups: Experimental group I (EG I: n = 30), experimental group II (EG II: n=30) and control group (CG: n = 30). Periapical lesions were experimentally developed by leaving the dental pulp of maxillary first molars mesial root open to oral environment for 4 weeks. Conventional root canal treatment was performed in EG II. Maxillary first molars along with alveolar bone were resected and fixed. The processed samples were stained with routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and evaluated immunohistochemically using antibodies against anti-PCNA, anti-STRO-1, and anti-CD44 polyclonal antibodies. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test and a p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Immunostaining of anti-PCNA showed 30%, 70% and 53.3% positive staining in CG, EG I, and EG II, respectively (p<0.001). Moreover, the CD44 staining was 20% in CG in contrast to 63.6% in EG I and 43.3 in EG II. STRO-1 staining in CG was 10%, 50% in the EG I and 36.6% in the EG II (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Periapical inflammatory tissues expressed significant proliferative cell marker PCNA and mesenchymal stem cell markers STRO-1, and CD44. These findings further reaffirm the promising role of mesenchymal stem cells in the healing of periapical periodontitis.

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary addition of probiotics (Protexin) and prebiotics (active MOS, mannan oligosaccharides) on growth performance, carcasses, and antibody titer in broilers. A total number of 360-day-old Ross broiler chicks were randomly divided into 9 groups in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement. Nine broiler starter (0-21 d) and finisher (21-35 d) diets were formulated by using 3 levels of probiotics (0, 1, and 2 g/kg of feed) and 3 levels of MOS (0, 1, and 1.5 g/kg of feed) and were randomly allotted to 9 groups. Feed intake was not affected by interaction of treatments during all phases (P > 0.05). Feed intake was improved due to the main effect of probiotic (P = 0.0001) or MOS (P = 0.005). No interaction (P > 0.05) was observed for weight gain in the starter, finisher, and overall phases. While, during the starter and finisher phases, weight gain was increased by probiotics (P = 0.028 or 0.04, respectively). Dietary supplementation of MOS improved weight gain (P = 0.01) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P = 0.03) during the overall period, but during starter and finisher periods, weight gain and FCR were not affected by prebiotics. Apart from dressing percentage, no interaction or individual effect of probiotics and prebiotics was observed for carcass, breast, thigh, heart, liver, and gizzard weight. Antibody titer for infectious bursal disease (IBD) was improved (P = 0.026) by the interaction effect between probiotics and prebiotics, when compared with the control group. Antibody titer against Newcastle disease (ND) was not affected by probiotics or prebiotics or their interactions (P > 0.05). It could be concluded that supplementation of prebiotics or probiotics can improve the growth performance of broilers. It may also be helpful in improving the antibody titer against IBD in broilers fed antibiotic-free diets.
