RESUMEN

Objectives: Sinusitis is common and deviated nasal septum (DNS) is a frequent anatomical variant in the paranasal sinuses (PNS). Whether DNS can cause sinusitis has been a subject of debate. This study determined the rate of sinusitis and its possible association with DNS and other factors in patients attending King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH). Methods: We conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study and reviewed the electronic health records of KAUH retrospectively. We recruited all patients aged ≥18 years who were referred to the Diagnostic Radiology Department for a PNS computed tomography scan from January 2018 to December 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated. Results: A total of 676 participants met the eligibility criteria, with a mean (SD) age of 38.9 (13) years. Sinusitis was present in 47.5% of patients, 54.8% ofwhich were males. Patients aged 31-40 years suffered sinusitis more than the other age groups.Approximately three-fourths (75.1%) of the total sample had DNS, and 51.3% of them had sinusitis. Those who did not have DNS but had sinusitis were 27.8%.There were significant associations between sinusitis and both sex (P <0.001) and age (P <0.05). Patients with DNS were approximately three times more likely to have sinusitis than those without DNS (OR =2.74, 95% CI:1.86-4.04; P <0.001). Conclusion: Almost half of the patients had sinusitis, and three-fourths had DNS. Sex, age, and DNS are possible factors associated with sinusitis. Assessing the presence of DNS and correcting it, if possible, is recommended to prevent the occurrence of sinusitis.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social media on acne treatment among the Saudi Arabian population. Methods This was a cross-sectional survey-based study conducted from January 2021 to August 2021. A self-administered survey was distributed through social media to different regions of Saudi Arabia. The survey obtained participants' sociodemographic information and details on whether people used social media for advice on acne treatment. It also asked whether they noticed any change in their acne based on social media recommendations. Results Of the 5,539 respondents, 4,227 experienced acne, of which 1,793 were influenced by social media. Most respondents were women. The majority of social media users were between 18 and 25 years old and chose social media as their first approach for acne advice. The most commonly used platform was Instagram (34%). The most frequent social media recommendation chosen was to increase water intake. Many noticed a slight change in their acne (64%), and 14.9% had side effects. There was a significant association between the use of social media for advice and gender (p-value < 0.001), education level (p-value = 0.002), and severity of acne (p-value < 0.001). Conclusion Social media has an influence on acne treatment, with many advice not recommended by established guidelines. These findings imply that dermatologists should pinpoint inaccuracies resulting from advice found on social media.

Objectives Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent neoplasms worldwide and it affects women of all ages. This study aimed to identify the common histopathological patterns of ovarian cancer among different age groups in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods This was a retrospective study that reviewed all ovarian specimens diagnosed as "ovarian tumors" by the Pathology Department from January 2016 to December 2020 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Saudi Arabia. The frequencies of ovarian neoplasm subtypes and their frequencies in different age groups were calculated. Results Out of 565 ovarian specimens studied, 63.2% were ovarian neoplasms while 36.8% were non-neoplastic functional cysts. Benign neoplasms 64.4% were more common than borderline 6.2% and malignant ones 29.4% in all age groups, except above the age of 60. Collectively as a category, surface epithelial neoplasms were the most common (59.4%). However, germ cell tumor in the form of mature cystic teratoma was the most common benign neoplasm 33.9% and the most common malignant was serous cystadenocarcinoma (40%). Conclusion Documenting new trends of histopathological patterns of ovarian neoplasms helps to detect variation among different age groups and to understand probable predisposing factors. This study found that the percentage of ovarian malignancy has increased over the years in the western region of Saudi Arabia. This signifies the need to increase awareness in order to achieve timely diagnosis and management.
