BACKGROUND: Antenatal care is vital for pregnant women and fetuses. However, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has hindered access to care worldwide, resulting in missed appointments. Therefore, assessing the quality of antenatal care during the pandemic is crucial. This study evaluated the care provided at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Saudi Arabia and suggested areas for improvement. METHODS: This retrospective medical records review involved 400 pregnant patients who received antenatal care at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in the past two years. A checklist was used to collect patient data, including demographics, antenatal care visits, ultrasounds, gestational age at first visit and ultrasound, prior cesarean section and preterm delivery, and virtual clinic attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). RESULTS: The sample had a mean age of 30±6 years, and most participants (87.8%) were Saudi women. Over half of the participants did not attend any antenatal follow-up visits, and the majority had only one ultrasound. Only a small proportion of mothers attended virtual clinics during the pandemic. Having a prior cesarean section and a parity of 1-3 were positively associated with ultrasound attendance, while prior preterm delivery was positively associated with antenatal visits and virtual clinic attendance. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the importance of improving antenatal care quality at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, especially during COVID-19. To achieve this, strategies such as increasing visits, ultrasound attendance, and virtual clinic access should be considered. By implementing these recommendations, the hospital can enhance care and promote maternal and fetal health.

Background: Diabetic foot is the leading cause of hospitalization among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Nurses have a significant role in helping diabetic foot patients by educating them about their condition. Therefore, assessing the knowledge of diabetic foot among nurses will help provide better healthcare services to these patients. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of diabetic foot care among the nursing staff at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from March to May 2020. A total of 172 nurses from different departments of the hospital were randomly selected. A validated questionnaire including 68 yes-or-no questions about diabetic foot management was used for the assessment. Results: The average total score of the entire questionnaire was 59 (standard deviation, ±7). During our study, the nursing school curriculum was found to be the major source of knowledge for nurses. Statistical significance (p=0.031) was found for the association between educational background and answers to the risk factor questions. According to our results, most nurses indicated that they believed that reporting any changes to the feet and toes and signs of infection to the physician was the best way to prevent the development of DM foot. Conclusion: Specialized training programs beyond basic nursing education will reinforce knowledge and skills, resulting in an expected lower risk of amputation for DM patients.

Breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer as well as one of the main causes of cancer-related mortality in women. Human microbial dysbiosis, which has been related to a range of malignancies, is one of the variables that may impact the chance of developing breast disorders. In this review, we aimed to investigate the relationship between breast cancer and benign breast tumors with dysbiosis of the microbiome at different body sites. We performed a systematic review of MEDLINE, Scopus, Ovid, and Cochrane Library to identify original articles published until July 2020 that reported studies of breast disease and microbiota. Twenty-four original articles were included in the study, which looked at the features and changes in breast, gut, urine, lymph node, and sputum microbial diversity in patients with benign and malignant breast tumors. In breast cancer, the breast tissue microbiome demonstrated changes in terms of bacterial load and diversity; in benign breast tumors, the microbiome was more similar to a malignant tumor than to normal breast tissue. Triple-negative (TNBC) and triple-positive (TPBC) types of breast cancer have a distinct microbial pattern. Moreover, in breast cancer, gut microbiota displayed changes in the compositional abundance of some bacterial families and microbial metabolites synthesis. Our review concludes that breast carcinogenesis seems to be associated with microbial dysbiosis. This information can be further explored in larger-scale studies to guide new prophylactic, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures for breast cancer.
