RESUMEN

Modified polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) resin was prepared using octafluoropentyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate as modifying monomers through seeded emulsion polymerization. The successful incorporation of octafluoropentyl methacrylate into the PVDC resin was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and XPS were utilized to investigate the element distribution in the modified monomer emulsion and the mechanism of monomer modification. The results demonstrated that the fluorine monomer was reacted in the resin, and mainly concentrated on the surface of the resin. The addition of octafluoropentyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate improved the water resistance of the resin. Compared to unmodified PVDC resin, the contact angle of the modified PVDC resin increased from 89.46° to 109.51°, and the water resistance at room temperature increased from 120 to 500 h. Furthermore, the modified resin exhibited excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and storage stability.

RESUMEN

A newly green method for the sensitive quantification of cloperastine, a cough suppressant, in spiked human plasma and its pharmaceutical formulation was designed for the first time. The established method depends on the enhancement of the weak fluorescence of cloperastine using 50 mM sulfuric acid to impair the photoinduced electron transfer produced from the nitrogen atom of piperidine moiety in cloperastine. This full protonation in an acid medium leads to an enhancement in the fluorescence of cloperastine, permitting its linear determination from 0.2 to 5.0 µg/mL with LOD and LOQ of 0.04 and 0.13 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the studied drug was estimated in its pharmaceutical market formulations as well as spiked human plasma. Furthermore, the greenness of the described method was evaluated.

RESUMEN

Pakistan, a country with limited water resources and highly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, faces numerous challenges in managing its water supply. In this sense, this study assessed potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the surface water and sediments of Pakistan's Indus River and its tributaries. Key water quality parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS) were determined, with respective average values of 7.1, 40 µS/cm, and 208 mg L-1. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn in surface water samples averaged 26 µg L-1, 0.9 µg L-1, 1.4 µg L-1, 22 µg L-1, and 2.1 µg L-1, respectively. The general sediment PTE profile was Ni > Cd > Zn > Cu > Cr. Certain PTE levels exceeded recommended thresholds, indicating the establishment of environmental pollution. Calculated geo-accumulation index values suggested moderate to heavy pollution levels in sediment, with PERI (404) values reinforcing the ecological risk posed by elevated PTE concentrations. Furthermore, significant correlations were observed between specific PTE pairs in both water and sediment samples. This study contributes with novel insights into the distribution and ecological implications of PTE contamination in the Indus River and its tributaries, paving the way for ecological risk management efforts.

RESUMEN

The diagnosis of prostate cancer has been evolving in the current decade, with expected mortality rates of 499,000 death by the year 2030. Apalutamide (APL) has been approved in 2018 as the first drug for the controlling of prostate cancer. APL significant success warrantied its high global sales, which are expected to surpass 58% of segment market sales (together with another drug; enzalutamide). Therefore, new, fast and environmentally friendly analytical methods are required for its determination for the quality control and biological monitoring purposes. The proposed research designs and evaluates the first fluorimetric approach based on novel porous green boron-doped carbon quantum dots (B@CDs) for the determination of APL in biopharmaceutical matrices. The synthetic approach has high quantum yield (31.15%). B@CDs were characterized using several tools, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), FTIR and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) which proved their improved surface properties with an average nano-diameter of 3.0 nm. The interaction between B@CDs and APL led to enhancement their fluorescence at 441 nm (excitation at 372 nm). The approach was validated for the determination of APL within concentration range of 15.0-700.0 ng mL- 1 with quantification limit LOQ 4.37 ng mL- 1 and detection limit LOD 1.44 ng mL- 1. The approach was successfully applied for the determination of APL in human plasma and pharmaceutical monitoring of its marketed tablet form. Then, the approach was assessed for its environmental impact using different metrics and proved its ecological greenness.

RESUMEN

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a persistent, inflammatory skin condition that impacts approximately 15 to 20% of children and 1 to 3% of adults globally. Common skin manifestations include papules, papulovesicular, and brown or red patches with swelling, crusting, and flaking. Therefore, the drug abrocitinib (ABR) was approved by the US FDA as an oral treatment for atopic dermatitis. The present study outlines the development of innovative, thermostable, and pH-stable organic solvent-free nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N@CQDs) synthesized through a one-step method for evaluating ABR with a notable quantum yield of 33.84% to minimize the use of organic solvents. Their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendly characteristics, and outstanding photocatalytic properties have established them as a promising alternative to conventional luminescent techniques like fluorescent dyes and luminous derivatization technique. The reaction of ABR with N@CQDs led to a significant decrease in the luminescent response of the produced green and stable carbon quantum dots at 513 nm. The detection range was determined to be 1.0-150.0 ng mL-1, with a lower limit of quantitation (LOQ) equal to 0.52 ng mL-1 based on the linear graph. The green method effectively used for analysis of ABR in pharmaceutical tablets and pharmacokinetic study with high sensitivity.

RESUMEN

Carious exposure of an irreversibly inflamed vital pulp in a young permanent tooth presents a significant clinical challenge to clinicians to maintain the vitality. Direct pulp capping, partial pulpotomy, and complete pulpotomy are the available procedures to treat young permanent tooth. Mineral trioxide aggregate and biodentine are currently the material of choice for these procedures. The present case report describes the successful apexogenesis of mandibular left first permanent molar using mineral trioxide aggregate. The 18-month follow-up of the case demonstrated clinical and radiographic success with absence of any signs and symptoms and continued root formation.

RESUMEN

Formyl peptide receptors (FPRs) are members of seven transmembrane G protein-coupled receptors superfamily that exhibit different responses based on the nature of stimulating ligand type. FPRs have been shown to be present in platelets and regulate their function. However, the effect of formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2/ALX) lipid ligands on platelets has not yet been addressed. Hence, we sought to study the role of FPR2/ALX ligand and lipoxin A4 lipid analogue, BML-111, in the modulation of platelet function and thrombus formation. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed subcellular distribution and peripheral mobilisation of FPR2/ALX in stimulated platelets. This variation in distribution was further confirmed using flow cytometry. BML-111 inhibited a range of platelet activities in a dose-dependent manner in response to several platelet agonists. This included aggregation, fibrinogen binding to integrin αIIbß3, α-granule secretion, dense granule secretion, Ca2 + mobilisation and integrin αIIbß3-mediated outside-in signaling. The selectivity of BML-111 for FPR2/ALX was confirmed using FPR2/ALX deficient mice in flow cytometry assays. In vitro thrombus formation was also inhibited by various concentrations of BML-111. Moreover, the levels of vasodilator stimulated phosphorylation (VASP-S157) increased significantly after BML-111 treatment in resting and stimulated platelets via protein kinase A (PKA) independently of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling. Together, our findings demonstrate the significance of BML-111 as a modulator of platelet function via FPR2/ALX and unravel the thrombo-protective potentials of BML-111 induced signaling against thrombo-inflammatory diseases.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Workplace safety is essential to occupational health practices among healthcare providers, especially for nurses vulnerable to work-related hazards such as needle stick and sharp injuries. In Yemen, the underestimation and absence of reporting system and lack of health supplies in a collapsed health system exacerbated the needle stick and sharp injuries. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and associated factors of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses in Taiz, Yemen. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 151 nurses working in three public hospitals in Taiz City. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed and delivered to the participants. Results: The prevalence of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses was very high (95.36%), and around half were injured more than five times. Female nurses and those in an emergency department were more likely to be subjected to needle stick and sharp injuries (p = 0.018 and 0.021, respectively). Needle stick was the most common cause of injury (62.77%), and the fingers were the most exposed injury site (79.17%). Non-reporting injuries were very high (73.61%), and only one-third (34.21%) of them proceeded in the process of management, and less than one-quarter (23.68%) had been vaccinated. Conclusion: The prevalence of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses in Taiz was very high, and determined by gender and place of work. Post-injury reporting and precautions were poor, which may increase the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections among clients and healthcare providers.

RESUMEN

Organic/Inorganic nanostructures enable the development of new functional materials for optoelectronics and biological applications. In this work, nanocomposite films of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium alginate (NaAlg) blend matrix (30/70 wt%) filled with molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanoplates were prepared using solution casting procedure. The effect of MoO3 nanoplates on structural, optical, electrical and antibacterial characteristics of pure PVP/NaAlg blend was investigated. The sizes of MoO3 nanoplates had dimensions between 90 and 420 nm with orthorhombic phase as indicated by the TEM and XRD techniques. Also, the XRD patterns of filled films suggested that the presence of crystalline phases of MoO3 within PVP/NaAlg matrix. FTIR analysis revealed the primary vibrational peaks of PVP and NaAlg, whose strength altered randomly after filling. The UV absorption increased gradually and shifted to the higher wavelength side. The alternating current (AC) conductivity and dielectric parameters were improved with increasing MoO3 concentration. The antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli increased with increase of MoO3 nanoplates concentration. The filled PVP/NaAlg-MoO3 samples displayed considerable enhancements in the values of Young's modulus (Y), tensile stress (σt) and elongation at break (εB). The obtained results imply that these nanocomposite films can be potentially used in optoelectronics and biological applications.

RESUMEN

Objective. This study aims to highlight the low birth weight (LBW) in Taiz City (Yemen), as LBW is one of the public health challenges experiencing a profound effect on newborns. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study since the interview and medical records were the sources of data to be analyzed by SPSS. Results. The findings of this study include; a high prevalence of LBW (39.11%), the maternal age was not associated with LBW (P = .68), and education level, economic status, residence place, and health status were not associated with LBW (P < .05). Although the pre-pregnancy BMI, during-pregnancy BMI, MUAC, and gestational age were significantly associated with LBW (P < .05), the only risk factor was gestational age (OR = 9.606, CI = 3.988-23.135, P = .00). Conclusion. LBW is highly prevalent in Taiz (Yemen), so providing good healthcare services is essential to manage LBW incidence.
