RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The media's key role in conveying health information to the public is not always supported by the quality of the reporting. Despite findings from observational studies (OSs) represent a substantial proportion of media health news, limitations of OSs are often overlooked in medical journals' abstracts, in press releases, and in associated news stories. The objective of this analysis is to investigate how Italian online news media report on a contemporary OS published in a major medical journal and dealing with a topic of widespread interest. METHODS: The OS was published in Nature Medicine (Nat Med) in February 2022. It is a large retrospective cohort study aimed at characterizing the post-acute cardiovascular manifestations of covid-19. We collected Italian online news articles covering the Nat Med study that were released in the first two weeks after study publication. Based on resources focused on evaluation and proper reporting of OSs, we identified five thematic categories to be employed as a minimal reference standard to address the quality of reporting of the Nat Med study. Namely: 1) causality, 2) fear mongering, 3) spin, 4) actionability and 5) critical evaluation. Then, we defined a 13-item checklist aimed at exploring the existence of issues within each of the online news article with regard to the five thematic categories above. Outcome was the percentage of news articles covering the NM study showing issues with each of the five thematic categories. RESULTS: After checking for inclusion and exclusion criteria, we collected 30 news articles. Global inter-rater agreement related to the checklist completion by 4 raters was substantial. An issue with causality was identified in 30 articles out of 30 (100%). An issue with fear mongering was identified in 25 (83.3%) of the 30 articles, and an issue with spin in 21 (75%) of the 28 articles. Furthermore, an issue with actionability and critical evaluation was identified in 16 (53.3%) and 26 (86.7%) of the 30 articles, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis of Italian online news media reporting about a contemporary OS published in a major medical journal and dealing with a topic of high public interest has shown that most news articles fail to properly report on the study's findings.

RESUMEN

The "National Report on Medicines use in older adults in Italy. Year 2019" provides a summary of data concerning the expenditure and consumption of medicines in individuals aged 65 or above in Italy. In addition to general characteristics and considerations, analyzes conducted on specific conditions, situations and settings are reported, such as the concomitant use in patients with chronic diseases, the use of medicines in hospitals and RSA and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic. Four local experiences related to deprescribing interventions are then reported, which highlight the feasibility and value of this approach.

RESUMEN

The Atlas of social inequalities in the use of medicines for the treatment of the major chronic diseases is the first national report published on social inequalities in the context of pharmaceutical care in Italy. The results highlighted how the socioeconomic position was strongly correlated with the use of medicines: for many therapeutic categories, the highest per capita consumption rates were recorded in the areas with a higher socioeconomic deprivation index. On the other hand, no correlations emerged between the level of deprivation and adherence and persistence to pharmacological treatment.

RESUMEN

The 2020 National Report "Medicines use in Italy", produced by the National Observatory on the Use of Medicines (OsMed) of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), describes the Italian pharmaceutical assistance through different available information flows that allow to recompose pharmaceutical territorial and hospital assistance, concerning both the national health service and private citizens. In the Report the results of numerous analyzes, both general and focused on specific therapeutic categories and classes, relating to pharmaceutical expenditure and consumption, are reported, but it is also present an in-depth analysis about monitoring registries and conditional reimbursement agreements, and a comparison between the most relevant Italian data and those of nine other European countries.

RESUMEN

The Italian Medicines Agency has started, since the first months of 2020, a monitoring of drug use during the covid-19 pandemic. This made it possible to identify specific trends in hospital and local purchases, such as the extensive use of off-label drugs with little evidence of efficacy during the first weeks of the epidemic, and to progressively assess the degree of implementation of regulatory and ministerial recommendations.

The OsMed report "The use of antibiotics in Italy - 2019", produced by the Italian Medicines Agency, shows how the prescriptions of these drugs are still too high in our country, albeit with high variability between different regions. A significant degree of inappropriate use of antibiotics also emerges, especially in respiratory infections. In general, the results highlight the need to implement prevention and control actions in order to counter antibiotic resistance.

RESUMEN

Muography (or muon radiography) is a technique that exploits the penetration capability of muons, elementary particles similar to electrons but with a mass about 200 times larger. High energy muons are naturally produced in the interactions of cosmic rays with the Earth atmosphere. The measurement of their absorption in matter allows the imaging of the inner structure of large bodies. The technological developments in the detection of elementary particles have opened the way to its application in various fields, such as archaeology, studies of geological structures, civil engineering and security issues. We have developed a new approach to the three-dimensional muography of underground structures, capable of directly localising hidden cavities and of reconstructing their shape in space. Our measurements at Mt. Echia, the site of the earliest settlement of the city of Naples in the 8th century BC, have led us to the discovery of a hidden underground cavity, whose existence was not evident with the usual two-dimensional muography graphs. We demonstrate here that our original approach definitely enhances muography discovery potential, especially in case of complex underground systems.
