RESUMEN

In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

RESUMEN

In distributed optical fibre sensors, distributed amplification schemes have been investigated in order to increase the measurement range while avoiding the limitation imposed by the fibre attenuation and the nonlinear effects. Recently, the use of Raman amplification with an engineered intensity modulation has been demonstrated as an efficient way to produce a virtually lossless trace employing a single-end configuration. In this paper, we propose the combination of this technique with a simultaneous second order Raman pumping scheme for increasing the measurement range. The optimal modulation profile has been numerically analyzed and we experimentally demonstrate a sensor able to detect perturbations along 70 km of fibre, with a minimal SNR penalty along the total length. Thanks to this new approach, the sensitivity in the worst point is considerably improved, and the ASD noise floor is also reduced. The measurement range is extended approximately 15 km compared with the equivalent first order pumping case.

RESUMEN

We present a plasmonic biosensor capable of detecting the presence of bisphenol A in ultra-low concentrations, yielding a wavelength shift of 0.15 ±â€¯0.01 nm in response to a solution of 1 fM concentration with limit of detection of 330 ±â€¯70 aM The biosensing device consists of an array of gold nano-antennae with a total length of 2.3 cm that generate coupled localised surface plasmons (cLSPs) and is covalently modified with an aptamer specific for bisphenol A recognition. The array of nano-antennae is fabricated on a lapped section of standard telecommunication optical fibre, allowing for potential multiplexing and its use in remote sensing applications. These results have been achieved without the use of enhancement techniques and therefore the approach allows the direct detection of bisphenol A, a low molecular weight (228 Da) target usually detectable only by indirect detection strategies. Its detection at such levels is a significant step forward in measuring small molecules at ultra-low concentrations. Furthermore, this new sensing platform paves the way for the development of portable systems for in-situ agricultural measurements capable of retrieving data on a substance of very high concern at ultra-low concentrations.

RESUMEN

Random distributed feedback fiber Raman lasers, where the feedback mechanism is provided by Rayleigh backscattering, have attracted a good deal of attention since they were first introduced in 2010. Their simple and flexible design, combined with good lasing efficiency and beam quality properties, comparable to those of standard cavity lasers, have led to multiple applications, particularly in the fields of fiber sensing and optical communications. In spite of these advances, the polarization properties of random fiber Raman lasers, which can strongly affect their performance in both sensing and communications, have barely been explored so far. In this article we experimentally and theoretically study the polarization properties of different open-cavity laser designs, based on either standard transmission fibers or low polarization-mode-dispersion spun fibers. By using high-power, highly-polarized pumps, we demonstrate controllable polarization-pulling and simultaneous lasing at close wavelengths with different output polarization properties in random distributed feedback fiber Raman lasers. These results advance our understanding of the polarization dynamics in ultralong lasers, and pave the way to the design of novel fiber laser sources capable of polarization-sensitive sensing and distributed amplification.

RESUMEN

Transmission of a net 467-Gb/s PDM-16QAM Nyquist-spaced superchannel is reported with an intra-superchannel net spectral efficiency (SE) of 6.6 (b/s)/Hz, over 364-km SMF-28 ULL ultra-low loss optical fiber, enabled by bi-directional second-order Raman amplification and digital nonlinearity compensation. Multi-channel digital back-propagation (MC-DBP) was applied to compensate for nonlinear interference; an improvement of 2 dB in Q(2) factor was achieved when 70-GHz DBP bandwidth was applied, allowing an increase in span length of 37 km.

RESUMEN

Supercontinuum generation in a multi-fiber ultra-long Raman fiber laser cavity is experimentally investigated for the first time. We demonstrate significantly enhanced spectral flatness and supercontinuum generation efficiency using only conventional single mode silica fiber. With a pump power of only 1.63W a approximately 15 dB bandwidth >260 nm wide (from 1440 to >1700 nm) supercontinuum source is reported with a flatness of <1 dB over 180 nm using an optimised hybrid TW/HNLF cavity. We address the dependence of the supercontinuum spectrum on the input pump power and ultra-long Raman cavity.
