RESUMEN

Background@#Sleep is an essential occupation for students. It affects one's neurocognitive functions and psychomotor performance, playing a significant role in academic performance, health, and well-being. This study aims to describe the sleep quality and sleep patterns among undergraduate occupational therapy (OT) students at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) during the COVID-19 pandemic.@*Methods@#This descriptive cross-sectional study utilized a record review based on existing data from the UST OT Department's Student Life Survey 2021 database. A total of 205 students from different year levels and academic cohorts of the academic year 2021-2022 participated in the survey, which included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data with valid responses (n=204) was analyzed using the measures of central tendency and dispersion, such as mean and standard deviation.@*Results@#Data analysis revealed that 95.59% (n=195) of student respondents had significantly poor sleep quality, while 4.41% (n=9) had good sleep quality. Students in the fifth-year level had the greatest sleep dysfunction as opposed to those in the third-year level who had little sleep dysfunction. Sleep duration and daytime dysfunction received the highest individual scores across all year levels.@*Conclusion@#Having poor sleep quality is a common occurrence among undergraduate OT students in UST during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sleep pattern trends suggest the need for school administrators and educators to create measures to mitigate possible negative effects on their student’s academic performance, health, and overall quality of life, especially during public health emergencies, calamities, and disasters.

RESUMEN

Key immune signatures of SARS-CoV-2 infection may associate with either adverse immune reactions (severity) or simply an ongoing anti-viral response (temporality); how immune signatures contribute to severe manifestations and/or temporal progression of disease and whether longer disease duration correlates with severity remain unknown. Patient blood was comprehensively immunophenotyped via mass cytometry and multiplex cytokine arrays, leading to the identification of 327 basic subsets that were further stratified into more than 5000 immunotypes and correlated with 28 plasma cytokines. Low-density neutrophil abundance was closely correlated with hepatocyte growth factor levels, which in turn correlated with disease severity. Deep analysis also revealed additional players, namely conventional type 2 dendritic cells, natural killer T cells, plasmablasts and CD16+ monocytes, that can influence COVID-19 severity independent of temporal progression. Herein, we provide interactive network analysis and data visualization tools to facilitate data mining and hypothesis generation for elucidating COVID-19 pathogenesis.

RESUMEN

The emergence of a SARS-CoV-2 variant with a point mutation in the spike (S) protein, D614G, has taken precedence over the original Wuhan isolate by May 2020. With an increased infection and transmission rate, it is imperative to determine whether antibodies induced against the D614 isolate may cross-neutralize against the G614 variant. In this report, profiling of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 humoral immunity reveals similar neutralization profiles against both S protein variants, albeit waning neutralizing antibody capacity at the later phase of infection. These findings provide further insights towards the validity of current immune-based interventions. IMPORTANCERandom mutations in the viral genome is a naturally occurring event that may lead to enhanced viral fitness and immunological resistance, while heavily impacting the validity of licensed therapeutics. A single point mutation from aspartic acid (D) to glycine (G) at position 614 of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein, termed D614G, has garnered global attention due to the observed increase in transmissibility and infection rate. Given that a majority of the developing antibody-mediated therapies and serological assays are based on the S antigen of the original Wuhan reference sequence, it is crucial to determine if humoral immunity acquired from the original SARS-CoV-2 isolate is able to induce cross-detection and cross-protection against the novel prevailing D614G variant.

Studying the reproductive attributes of pests is central to understanding their life cycle history and in crafting management strategies to regulate, if not bring down, their population below threshold levels. In this article, the morphology of the male reproductive tract, topology of the spermatozoa, and salient features of spermiogenesis in the Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi Tsai and Li was studied to provide baseline information for further pest management studies. Results showed that male reproductive tract of this species differs from those documented in other Coleopterans by having 20 testicular tubules in each testis and the presence of two types of accessory glands. The spermatozoon is seen having peculiar characteristics such as an "h"-shaped acrosomal vesicle with a "puff"-like expansion, one centriole, one large spongy body, and two accessory bodies. Despite with some morphological differences of the male reproductive organ, spermatogenesis in this organism is similar to other Coleopterans. Overall, detailed studies regarding the components of the primary male reproductive organ of this beetle species would expand the knowledge on the less-understood biology of Coleopteran pests and would help in designing regulatory measures to conserve endemic and indigenous pine trees in China.
