[Is loneliness the future geriatric syndrome of the 21st century?] / ¿Es la soledad el futuro síndrome geriátrico del siglo XXI?

The aging of the world population is now an unquestionable fact. The World Health Organization (WHO) points out in its World Report on Aging and Health published in 2015 two main causes: the increase in life expectancy and the decrease in fertility rates. The United Nations (UN) announced that Spain will become the oldest country in the world in 2050, with 44% of citizens over 60 years of age and the median age of 55.2 years. Whether this event is interpreted optimistically or as a demographic problem will depend on the quality of the years of life gained.

El envejecimiento de la población mundial es ya un hecho incuestionable. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) señala en su Informe mundial sobre el envejecimiento y la salud publicado en 2015 dos causas principales: el aumento en la esperanza de vida y el descenso de las tasas de fecundidad. La Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) anunció que España llegará a ser el país más envejecido del mundo en 2050, siendo el 44% de la ciudadanía mayor de 60 años y la mediana de edad de 55,2 años. Si este acontecimiento es interpretado con optimismo o como un problema demográfico dependerá de la calidad de los años de vida ganados.

Is Artificial Intelligence ageist?

INTRODUCTION: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technological innovation with wide applicability in daily life, which could help elderly people. However, it raises potential conflicts, such as biases, omissions and errors. METHODS: Descriptive study through the negative stereotypes towards aging questionnaire (CENVE) conducted on chatbots ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, YOUChat, and Copilot was conducted. RESULTS: Of the chatbots studied, three were above 50% in responses with negative stereotypes, Copilot with high ageism level results, followed by Perplexity. In the health section, Copilot was the chatbot with the most negative connotations regarding old age (13 out of 20 points). In the personality section, Copilot scored 14 out of 20, followed by YOUChat. CONCLUSION: The Copilot chatbot responded to the statements more ageistically than the other platforms. These results highlight the importance of addressing any potential biases in AI to ensure that the responses provided are fair and respectful for all potential users.

[Perceived social support of people over 60 years who care for their grandchildren]. / Apoyo social percibido de personas mayores de 60 años que cuidan de sus nietos.

OBJECTIVE: The role of older people in today's society is important in supporting work-life balance and well-being. The aim of the study was to analyze the perception of the support they receive and the psychosocial well-being of people over 60years of age who take care of their grandchildren. METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study. A sample of people over 60years of age, who attended the pediatrics service in three health centers accompanying their grandchildren, during the first four-month period of 2018. They were administered the Duke-UNC questionnaire, with measures of social support and involvement in the care of their grandchildren. RESULTS: The majority cared for their grandchildren between 5 and 14hours per week, performing recreational and maintenance activities. The participants reported a significant relationship of the caregiver's role in their quality of life and well-being; 88% of the subjects perceived a high level of social support. Involvement in weekly caregiving hours did not correlate with worse perceived support. CONCLUSIONS: Older adults who care for their grandchildren and attend the primary care pediatrics service with them perceive an adequate level of social support, regardless of the number of hours spent doing so.
