RESUMEN
The efficiency of viral isolation in microplates was assayed during an epidemic outbreak of bronchiolitis and compared with the standard tube method. The agreement between the two methods was noteworthy. Although mainly dealing with isolation of RS virus, the data seem to indicate that due to its simplicity virus isolation in microplates is preferable to the standard tube method.

Seven children with herpes meningoencephalitis aged between 14 days and 13 months were studied. The herpes infection was confirmed by isolation of herpes virus from the CSF (one case), from the brain (one case), and in the 5 remaining cases by serology. The strains isolated were herpes type 2. The clinical features of herpes meningoencephalitis in the first year of life and the laboratory data are described.

Forty children over 12 months of age were inoculated subcutaneously with live mumps vaccine (Jeryl Lynn strain) and tested before and 6 weeks after vaccination for complement fixing, (CF) and hemadsorption neutralizing (HN) serum antibodies against a wild-mumps virus strain. CF antibody titers were not reliable for assessing both the previous immunity and the vaccine response. Among the 13 HN seronegative subjects the responders to the vaccine were 7, with a seroconversion rate of 53.8% and a geometric mean titer (GMT) of 1:2.6. Twenty (74.1%) of the 27 subjects already seropositive before the vaccination had a booster effect with an increase of the GMT from 1:8.29 to 1:33.89.

In this study a venous blood specimen was drawn and, at the same time, rubella vaccine was given to 1906 schoolgirls mostly in the pre-pubertal age. To assess the pre-vaccination immune status and the effect of the vaccine, a second blood sample was taken 6 weeks later and tested for rubella HAI antibody simultaneously with the first one. RA 27/3 rubella vaccine administered by intranasal route to 81 girls produced a 100% seroconversion rate and the same vaccine strain, given by subcutaneous route to 460 girls, produced a 94.73% seroconversion rate. Among the 1, 365 schoolgirls who received subcutaneous Cendehill vaccine, the seroconversion rate was 86.68%. Side effects were mild and transient and occurred, as headache, most frequently among the girls who received RA 27/3 vaccine by intranasal route.
