RESUMEN

Air pollution poses a persuasive threat to global health, demonstrating widespread detrimental effects on populations worldwide. Exposure to pollutants, notably particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 µm (PM2.5), has been unequivocally linked to a spectrum of adverse health outcomes. A nuanced understanding of the relationship between them is crucial for implementing effective policies. This study employs a comprehensive investigation, utilizing the extended health production function framework alongside the system generalized method of moments (SGMM) technique, to scrutinize the interplay between air pollution and health outcomes. Focusing on a panel of the top twenty polluted nations from 2000 to 2021, the findings yield substantial insights. Notably, PM2.5 concentration emerges as a significant factor, correlating with a reduction in life expectancy by 3.69 years and an increase in infant mortality rates by 0.294%. Urbanization is found to increase life expectancy by 0.083 years while concurrently decreasing infant mortality rates by 0.00022%. An increase in real per capita gross domestic product corresponds with an improvement in life expectancy by 0.21 years and a decrease in infant mortality rates by 0.00065%. Similarly, an elevated school enrollment rate is associated with a rise in life expectancy by 0.17 years and a decline in infant mortality rates by 0.00032%. However, a higher population growth rate is found to modestly decrease life expectancy by 0.019 years and slightly elevate infant mortality rates by 0.000016%. The analysis reveals that per capita greenhouse gas emissions exert a negative impact, diminishing life expectancy by 0.486 years and elevating infant mortality rates by 0.00061%, while per capita energy consumption marginally reduces life expectancy by 0.026 years and increases infant mortality rates by 0.00004%. Additionally, economic volatility shock presents a notable decrement in life expectancy by 0.041 years and an increase in infant mortality rates by 0.000045%, with inflationary shock further exacerbating adverse health outcomes by lowering life expectancy by 0.70 years and elevating infant mortality rates by 0.00025%. Moreover, the study scrutinizes the role of institutional quality, revealing a constructive impact on health outcomes. Specifically, the institutional quality index is associated with an increase in life expectancy by 0.66% and a decrease in infant mortality rates by 0.0006%. Extending the analysis to examine the nuanced dimensions of institutional quality, the findings discern that economic institutions wield a notably stronger positive influence on health outcomes compared to political and institutional governance indices. Finally, the results underscore the pivotal moderating role of institutional quality in mitigating the deleterious impact of PM2.5 concentration on health outcomes, counterbalancing the influence of external shocks, and improving the relationships between explanatory variables and health outcome indicators. These findings offer critical insights for guiding evidence-based policy implications, with a focus on fostering resilient, sustainable, and health-conscious societies.

Background: Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging encounters the obstacle of partial volume effects, arising from its limited intrinsic resolution, giving rise to (I) considerable bias, particularly for structures comparable in size to the point spread function (PSF) of the system; and (II) blurred image edges and blending of textures along the borders. We set out to build a deep learning-based framework for predicting partial volume corrected full-dose (FD + PVC) images from either standard or low-dose (LD) PET images without requiring any anatomical data in order to provide a joint solution for partial volume correction and de-noise LD PET images. Methods: We trained a modified encoder-decoder U-Net network with standard of care or LD PET images as the input and FD + PVC images by six different PVC methods as the target. These six PVC approaches include geometric transfer matrix (GTM), multi-target correction (MTC), region-based voxel-wise correction (RBV), iterative Yang (IY), reblurred Van-Cittert (RVC), and Richardson-Lucy (RL). The proposed models were evaluated using standard criteria, such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), root mean squared error (RMSE), structural similarity index (SSIM), relative bias, and absolute relative bias. Results: Different levels of error were observed for these partial volume correction methods, which were relatively smaller for GTM with a SSIM of 0.63 for LD and 0.29 for FD, IY with an SSIM of 0.63 for LD and 0.67 for FD, RBV with an SSIM of 0.57 for LD and 0.65 for FD, and RVC with an SSIM of 0.89 for LD and 0.94 for FD PVC approaches. However, large quantitative errors were observed for multi-target MTC with an RMSE of 2.71 for LD and 2.45 for FD and RL with an RMSE of 5 for LD and 3.27 for FD PVC approaches. Conclusions: We found that the proposed framework could effectively perform joint de-noising and partial volume correction for PET images with LD and FD input PET data (LD vs. FD). When no magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images are available, the developed deep learning models could be used for partial volume correction on LD or standard PET-computed tomography (PET-CT) scans as an image quality enhancement technique.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity and environmental degradation pose significant threats to health outcomes in South Asia, necessitating effective policy interventions. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of food insecurity and environmental degradation on health outcome indicators amidst global inflationary shocks and institutional quality arrangements. Additionally, it aims to explore the intricate moderating role of institutional quality on the relationship between food insecurity, endogenous variables, and external shocks. METHOD: In alignment with the study's objectives, a set of panel data spanning from 2000 to 2021 is compiled for South Asia. The study introduces a novel variable representing inflationary shock, crafted through the integration of inflation datapoints and the application of the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model. Additionally, a distinctive aggregate institutional quality index is formulated, drawing from six key measures of the Worldwide Governance indicators. To scrutinize the effects of food insecurity, environmental degradation, and other explanatory variables, the study employs the two-step system generalized method of moment technique, offering a robust analytical approach to uncover complex relationships and dynamics in the region. RESULTS: The results indicate that the prevalence of undernourishment, inequality in per capita calorie intake, and CO2 emissions significantly reduce life expectancy and increase mortality rates. Additionally, it shows that per capita kilocalorie supply, per capita GDP, per capita health expenditures, and urbanization are statistically significant for increasing life expectancy and decreasing mortality rates. The findings reveal that inflationary shocks severely affect food insecurity and environmental factors, exerting further pressure on contemporary life expectancy and mortality rates. In rebuttal, the institutional quality index is found to have significant effects on increasing and decreasing life expectancy and mortality rates, respectively. Furthermore, the institutional quality index is effective in moderating the nexus between food insecurity, environmental degradation, and health outcomes while also neutralizing the negative impact of inflationary shocks on the subject. CONCLUSION: The results verify triple health constraints such as food insecurity, environmental factors, and economic vulnerability to global shocks, which impose severe effects on life expectancy and mortality rates. Furthermore, poor institutional quality is identified as a hindrance to health outcomes in South Asia. The findings suggest specific policy implications that are explicitly discussed.

Prior literature is substantive in highlighting the nexus between pollutant and socio-economic predictors; however, the role of human interaction has not been sufficiently explored. Thus, the present study examines the validity of the environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in the presence of energy consumption, overpopulation, and human capital index in five South Asian countries. It employs fixed effects, random effects, and dynamic panel causality techniques with a set of panel data from 1972 to 2021. The baseline results validate the existence of the EKC hypothesis in the recipient panel. Nevertheless, the findings reveal that energy consumption and population density have positive effects, while human capital has negative impacts on CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the study observes that energy consumption and per capita GDP have a significant causal link with CO2 emissions, whereas CO2 emissions are evident to have causality with population density and human capital index. The results are robust and suggest that the consolidation of an effective regulatory framework and technological improvements are substantial measures to improve environmental quality in South Asia. Moreover, allocating sufficient resources to uplift contemporary educational and health status would be imperative to improving environmental quality as aspired to by the Paris Agreement.

BACKGROUND: This study raises two key arguments: First, government health expenditure (GHE) and per capita out-of-pocket expenditures on healthcare (OPEH) are sensitive to contemporary good governance practices, giving policy importance to the exogeneity of healthcare determinants, i.e., governance for health rather than health governance. Second, it is the income level of countries that reflects the volatility of the governance spillovers on the subject. METHODS: The present study constructs a composite governance index (CGI) and employs a set of panel data for 144 countries over the period from 2002 to 2020. To allow comparability and extract specific policy implications, the countries are classified as full, high-, middle-, and low-income panels. Meanwhile to delve into the short- and long-run effects of CGI on GHE and OPEH, the study employs the cross-sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lags (CS-ARDL) model. Further, to establish a causal link between the variables, it uses the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality technique. RESULTS: The results indicate that CGI is significantly cointegrated with GHE and OPEH in all recipient panels. It indicates that while CGI has significantly positive impacts on GHE and OPEH, its effects vary according to the income level of the underlying economies. The findings support the idea of governance for health and show that CGI drives the stabilization and enhancement of GHE and OPEH in the long run. Furthermore, the findings reveal that economic growth, the age dependency ratio, and tax revenue have positive effects, while the crude death rate and the child mortality rate exert negative impacts on the subject. Finally, the results highlight a unidirectional causality running from CGI to GHE and OPEH, while no feedback response is evident. CONCLUSIONS: Although an increase in GHE and OPEH is associated with the improvement of the population's healthcare, the results suggest the recognition of the importance and institutionalization of good governance to streamline this improvement through effective channelization, outreach, and social environment development for extensive health inclusion.

Sustainable environmental quality is a global concern, and a concrete remedy to overcome this challenge is a policy priority. Therefore, this study delves into the subject and examines the effects of governance on environmental quality in 180 countries from 1999 to 2021. To maintain comparability and precision, we first classify countries into full and income-level panels and then, innovatively, construct a composite governance index (CGI) to capture the extensive effects of governance on CO2 emissions. Complementing the stationarity properties of the variables, we employ the cross-sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lags model to analyze the data. Our survey yields four key findings. First, a long-run nexus between CGI, CO2 emissions, and other control variables is confirmed. Second, the findings indicate that CGI is crucial to improving environmental quality by reducing CO2 emissions across all panels. Third, we find that while CGI maintains a similar magnitude, the size of its effects substantially varies according to the income level of the underlying countries. Fourth, the findings reveal that energy consumption, population growth rate, trade openness, and urbanization contribute to environmental degradation, while financial development and the human development index are significant in reducing CO2 emissions. Our findings suggest specific policy implications, summing up that one common policy is not a good fit for all environmental quality measures.

BACKGROUND: Little is known whether women's knowledge of perceived severity of illness and sociodemographic characteristics of women influence healthcare seeking behavior for maternal health services in Afghanistan. The aim of this study was to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: Data were used from the Afghanistan Health Survey 2018. Women's knowledge in terms of danger signs or symptoms during pregnancy was assessed. The signs or symptoms were bleeding, swelling of the body, headache, fever, or any other danger sign or symptom (e.g., high blood pressure). A categorical variable of knowledge score was created. The outcome variables were defined as ≥ 4 ANC vs. 0-3 ANC; ≥ 4 PNC vs. 0-3 PNC visits; institutional vs. non-institutional deliveries. A multivariable generalized linear model (GLM) was used. RESULTS: Data were used from 9,190 ever-married women, aged 13-49 years, who gave birth in the past two years. It was found that 56%, 22% and 2% of women sought healthcare for institutional delivery, ≥ 4 ANC, ≥ 4 PNC visits, respectively, and that women's knowledge is a strong predictor of healthcare seeking [odds ratio (OR)1.77(1.54-2.05), 2.28(1.99-2.61), and 2.78 (2.34-3.32) on knowledge of 1, 2, and 3-5 signs or symptoms, respectively, in women with ≥ 4 ANC visits when compared with women who knew none of the signs or symptoms. In women with ≥ 4 PNC visits, it was 1.80(1.12-2.90), 2.22(1.42-3.48), and 3.33(2.00-5.54), respectively. In women with institutional deliveries, it was 1.49(1.32-1.68), 2.02(1.78-2.28), and 2.34(1.95-2.79), respectively. Other strong predictors were women's education level, multiparity, residential areas (urban vs. rural), socioeconomic status, access to mass media (radio, TV, the internet), access of women to health workers for birth, and decision-making for women where to deliver. However, age of women was not a strong predictor. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that pregnant women's healthcare seeking behaviour is influenced by women's knowledge of danger signs and symptoms during pregnancy, women's education, socioeconomic status, access to media, husband's, in-laws' and relatives' decisions, residential area, multiparity, and access to health workers. The findings have implications for promoting safe motherhood and childbirth practices through improving women's knowledge, education, and social status.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictors of osteoporosis in women in Yazd, Iran. Methods: This hospital-based case-control study was performed on 270 women 35-65 yr old (135 case and 135 control) from Mar 2016 to Mar 2017. Case and control were matched in terms of age ± 2 (year) as a group matching. Osteoporosis is defined as a T-score of bone mineral density (BMD) below -2.5 SD. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Statistical tests included chi-square, student t test and Mann Whitney test .Multiple logistic regression (MLR) which forward method was used for modeling. Results: Odds ratio (OR) of osteoprosis were menarche age>12 yr (OR=3.37, CI:2.29-15.89), history of hysterectomy (OR=13, CI:3.81-44.82), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (OR=6.58, CI:2.29-18.91) calcium supplements (OR=0.14, CI:0.04-0.41), menopause age <40 (OR=11.84, CI:1.54-90), second smoking (OR=3.38, CI:1.16-9.81) and increase of weight (OR=0.86, CI:0.80-0.94). Conclusion: Predictors of osteoporosis was menarche age >12 yr (3 times), history of hysterectomy (13 times), RA (6.5 times), menopause age <40 (12 times), second smoking (more than 3 times), calcium supplements and weight (protective).

Financial inclusion is critical to inclusive growth, proffering policy solutions to eradicate the barriers that exclude individuals from financial markets. This study explores the effects of financial inclusion on economic growth in a global perspective with a large number of panels classified by income and regional levels from 2002-2020. The analysis begins with the development of a comprehensive composite financial inclusion index comprised of penetration, availability, and usage of financial services and the estimation of heterogeneous panel data models augmented with well-known variables. The results obtained from the panel cointegration test support a long-run relationship between economic growth, financial inclusion, and the control variables in the full panel, income-level, and regional-level economies. Furthermore, the study employs a GMM (generalized method of moment) approach using System-GMM estimators to examine the effects of financial inclusion and the control predictors on economic growth. The results of the GMM model clearly indicate that financial inclusion has a significantly positive impact on economic growth across all panels, implying that financial inclusion is an effective tool in fostering rapid economic growth in the world. Finally, the study delves into the causality relationship between the predictors and provides statistical evidence of bidirectional causality between economic growth and financial inclusion, whereas it only supports unidirectional causality relationships from credit to the private sector, foreign direct investment, inflation rate, the rule of law, school enrollment ratio, and trade openness with no feedback causality. Moreover, the study fails to provide causality evidence from the age dependency ratio and population to economic growth.

Islet transplantation is a potential therapy for type 1 diabetes, but it is expensive due to limited pancreas donor numbers and the variability in islet quality. The latter is often addressed by co-culture of harvested islets with stem cells to promote in vitro remodeling of their basement membrane and enable expression of angiogenic factors for enhancing vascularization. However, given the heterogeneity in islet size, shape and function, there is a need for metrics to assess the reorganization dynamics of single islets over the co-culture period. Based on shape-evolution of individual multi-cell aggregates formed during co-culture of human islets with adipose derived stem cells and the pressures required for their bypass through microfluidic constrictions, we present size-normalized biomechanical metrics for monitoring the reorganization. Aggregates below a threshold size exhibit faster reorganization, as evident from rise in their biomechanical opacity and tightening of their size distribution, but this size threshold increases over culture time to include a greater proportion of the aggregates. Such biomechanical metrics can quantify the subpopulation of reorganized aggregates by distinguishing them versus those with incomplete reorganization, over various timepoints during the co-culture.

Chemotherapy has been used to inhibit cancer growth for decades, but emerging evidence shows it can affect the tumor stroma, unintentionally promoting cancer malignancy. After treatment of primary tumors, remaining drugs drain via lymphatics. Though all drugs interact with the lymphatics, we know little of their impact on them. Here, we show a previously unknown effect of platinums, a widely used class of chemotherapeutics, to directly induce systemic lymphangiogenesis and activation. These changes are dose-dependent, long-lasting, and occur in healthy and cancerous tissue in multiple mouse models of breast cancer. We found similar effects in human ovarian and breast cancer patients whose treatment regimens included platinums. Carboplatin treatment of healthy mice prior to mammary tumor inoculation increased cancer metastasis as compared to no pre-treatment. These platinum-induced phenomena could be blocked by VEGFR3 inhibition. These findings have implications for cancer patients receiving platinums and may support the inclusion of anti-VEGFR3 therapy into treatment regimens or differential design of treatment regimens to alter these potential effects.

This study examines the effects of capital and money market predictors on economic growth in China using non-linear autoregressive distributed lags and dynamic multiplier methods. Applying asymmetric techniques is based on the hypothesized linear effects of finance on growth. Confirming the asymmetric nexus and long-run bounds amid indicators, the results demonstrate that positive (negative) shocks from money market rate decrease (increase) economic growth, while negative (positive) shocks from real interest rate and total liquidity increase (decrease) growth in the short-run. Besides, the results reveal that the shocks (positive and negative) from market capitalization and stock market turnover increase economic growth, while the shocks from total stock traded decrease growth both in the short and long runs. Moreover, the results of error-correction reveal a steady speed of adjustment of the short-run asymmetries to their long-run equilibrium, implying that improved financial systems attract sound financial projects, leading to sustainable and long-run economic growth. In light of the findings, relevant policy recommendations are discussed.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) regulates angio/neurogenesis and also tightly links to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although exercise has a beneficial effect on neurovascular function and cognitive function, the direct effect of exercise on VEGF-related signaling and cognitive deficit in AD is incompletely understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of exercise on angiostatin/VEGF cascade and cognitive function in AD model rats. Wistar male rats were randomly divided into five groups: control (CON), injection of DMSO (Sham-CON), CON-exercise (sham-EX), intrahippocampal injection of Aß (Aß), and Aß-exercise (Aß-EX). Rats in EX groups underwent treadmill exercise for 4 weeks, then the cognitive function was measured by the Morris Water Maze (MWM) test. mRNA levels of hypoxia-induced factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), and angiostatin were determined in hippocampus by RT-PCR. We found that spatial learning and memory were impaired in Aß-injected rats, but exercise training improved it. Moreover, exercise training increased the reduced mRNA expression level of VEGF signaling, including HIF1α, VEGF, and VEGFR2 in the hippocampus from Aß-injected rats. Also, the mRNA expression level of angiostatin was elevated in the hippocampus from Aß-injected rats, and exercise training abrogated its expression. Our findings suggest that exercise training improves cognitive function in Aß-injected rats, possibly through enhancing VEGF signaling and reducing angiostatin.

Because of the deficiency of water caused by the regional disparities of rainfall due to global warming, attention has been given to the use of well water as drinking water in developing countries. Our fieldwork study in Afghanistan showed that there was a maximum value of 3371 µg/L and an average value of 233 µg/L of lithium in well drinking water. Since the level of lithium in well water is higher than the levels in other countries, we investigated the health risk of lithium. After confirming no influence of ≤1000 µM lithium on cell viability, we found that lithium at concentrations of 100 and 500 µM promoted anchorage-independent growth of human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) but not that of human keratinocytic carcinoma cells (HSC-5) or lung epithelial carcinoma cells (A549). The same concentrations of lithium also promoted phosphorylation of c-SRC and MEK/ERK but not that of AKT in the keratinocytes. Inhibitors of c-SRC (PP2) and MEK (PD98059) suppressed the lithium-induced increase in anchorage-independent growth of the keratinocytes. Our results suggested that lithium promoted transformation of nontumorigenic cells rather than progression of tumorigenic cells with preferential activation of the c-SRC/MEK/ERK pathway. Since previous pharmacokinetics studies indicated that it is possible for the serum level of lithium to reach 100 µM by drinking 2.5 L of water containing 3371 µg/L of lithium per day, the high level of lithium contamination in well drinking water in Kabul might be a potential oncogenic risk in humans.

WHO has presented a health-based guideline value for boron in drinking water. That fact indicates that a high level of boron is toxic for humans. However, there is no direct evidence of boron-mediated malignant transformation. In this study, human lung epithelial nontumorigenic BEAS-2B cells and tumorigenic A549 cells were used to investigate the tumorigenic toxicity of boron in vitro. Anchorage-independent growth, a hallmark of malignant transformation, was increased by boron at concentrations of 50, 250 and 500 µM in BEAS-2B cells, though the same concentrations of boron had no influence on anchorage-independent growth of A549 cells. Moreover, boron at concentrations of 250 and 500 µM activated the c-SRC/PI3K/AKT pathway of BEAS-2B cells. The results of our in vitro study suggest that exposure to high levels of boron promotes transforming activity of nontumorigenic cells.

Iris is one of the most popular and best-selling ornamental plants around the globe. Fusarium root rot disease, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. gladioli (FOG) is one of the most serious disease of Iridaceae and Iris plants. In this study, three resistant and three susceptible Iris genotypes were inoculated with FOG isolates to evaluate expression of related genes promoting defense to disease at intervals times at two, four and six weeks post inoculation. Total RNA was extracted using an AccuZol™ reagent, and the first-strand Cdna was synthesized accordingly. Expression level of WRKY transcription factors (WRKY), lectin receptor kinase (LecRK), pathogenesis-related protein (PR3), lipoxygenase (LOX1) and ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIP) genes was investigated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The transcriptional level of five defense-related genes were up-regulated in FOG-infected samples. The genes expression in resistant Iris genotypes NIOP3, NIOP15 and NIOP16 was much higher than susceptible NIOP1, NIOP12 and NIOP20 genotypes. The highest level of expression was observed in all the genes and genotypes at 6 weeks post inoculation. The phenotypic symptoms of genotypes and changes in the expression of genes confirmed resistance in Iris genotypes NIOP3, NIOP15 and NIOP16 in comparison to susceptible genotypes NIOP1, NIOP12 and NIOP20, and un-inoculated control Iris plants. Identifying disease-resistant genotypes can contribute to the development of new ornamental cultivars that can be deployed to ensure high quality and lasting Iris plants.

In vitro models of angiogenesis are valuable tools for understanding the underlying mechanisms of pathological conditions and for the preclinical evaluation of therapies. Our laboratory developed the rat mesentery culture model as a new tool for investigating mechanistic cell-cell interactions at specific locations across intact blood and lymphatic microvascular networks ex vivo. The objective of this study was to report a method for evaluating the effect of aging on human stem cell differentiation into pericytes during angiogenesis in cultured microvascular networks. DiI labeled exogenous stem cells were seeded onto harvested adult Wistar rat mesenteric tissues and cultured in alpha-MEM + 1% serum for up to 5 days according to four experimental groups: (1) adult human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs), (2) aged hASCs, (3) adult human bone marrow-derived stem cells (hBMSCs), and (4) aged hBMSCs. Angiogenesis per experimental group was supported by observation of increased vessel density and capillary sprouting. For each tissue per experimental group, a subset of cells was observed in typical pericyte location wrapped along blood vessels. Stem cell differentiation into pericytes was supported by the adoption of elongated pericyte morphology along endothelial cells and positive NG2 labeling. The percentage of cells in pericyte locations was not significantly different across the experimental groups, suggesting that aged mesenchymal stem cells are able to retain their differentiation capacity. Our results showcase an application of the rat mesentery culture model for aging research and the evaluation of stem cell fate within intact microvascular networks.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging areas of vascular biology focus on lymphatic/blood vessel mispatterning and the regulation of endothelial cell identity. However, a fundamental question remains unanswered: Can lymphatic vessels become blood vessels in adult tissues? Leveraging a novel tissue culture model, the objective of this study was to track lymphatic endothelial cell fate over the time course of adult microvascular network remodeling. METHODS: Cultured adult Wistar rat mesenteric tissues were labeled with BSI-lectin and time-lapse images were captured over five days of serum-stimulated remodeling. Additionally, rat mesenteric tissues on day 0 and day 3 and 5 post-culture were labeled for PECAM + LYVE-1 or PECAM + podoplanin. RESULTS: Cultured networks were characterized by increases in blood capillary sprouting, lymphatic sprouting, and the number of lymphatic/blood vessel connections. Comparison of images from the same network regions identified incorporation of lymphatic vessels into blood vessels. Mosaic lymphatic/blood vessels contained lymphatic marker positive and negative endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reveal the ability for lymphatic vessels to transition into blood vessels in adult microvascular networks and discover a new paradigm for investigating lymphatic/blood endothelial cell dynamics during microvascular remodeling.

Afghanistan is one of the countries with the poorest maternal mortality ratio in the world. Inadequate utilization of antenatal care (ANC) services increases the risk of maternal mortality. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with ANC visits in Afghanistan. The dataset of the Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey (AfDHS) 2015 were used for taking the socio-demographic factors, cultural factors, and the number of ANC visits. The subjects of this study were 18,790 women who had at least one live birth in the last five years, and 10,554 women (56.2%) had availed of at least one ANC visit. Most women were 20-29 years old (53.3%), poor (41.7%), had 2-4 children (43.9%), lived in rural areas (76.1%), and had no education (85.0%) or no job (86.7%). Most women answered that husbands made a decision about their healthcare and that getting permission from their husbands was a major challenge. Multivariate analysis showed that age, ethnicity, area of residence, parity, women's education, husband's education, literacy, having a job, wealth, the decision maker for healthcare, and difficulty in getting permission from the husband were significantly correlated with availing of the ANC visits. This study showed that not only the socio-demographic factors but also the cultural factors were associated with ANC visits. The Afghanistan government should improve the education programs at schools and healthcare facilities, for both men and women. To augment women's propensity to take a decision, the programs for women's empowerment need to be supported and extended across the country.
