Efficient movement control and the mechanisms responsible for the sense of rhythm are still not fully understood. The purpose of this paper was to estimate the influence of fatigue on the sense of rhythm defined as specific order of movements and their rhythmic perception. It was examined in a holistic way, by analyzing both global and local aspects of the movement. Twenty adult participants (20.2 ± 0.4 years, ten females) took part in the experiment. The fatigue protocol was applied in four blocks, which consisted of 30-s consecutive jumping with 80% of maximal effort. Immediately after each fatigue block, the rhythm performance was evaluated in global and local tests. The global test was based on 45 continuous jumps and was divided into an assisted and an unassisted phase using the Optojump Next System. The local test was performed by bilateral tapping of lower limbs by means of the Vienna Test System. The hypothesis about the significant effect of fatigue on the sense of rhythm was falsified. In particular, we observed the lack of differences between global and local aspects of the movement. Moreover, female participants showed a better sense of rhythm than males. Regardless of the fatigue protocol, participants made larger errors with a lower movement frequency in local rhythmic tasks. The coefficient of variation showed that sex differences were only significant in the unassisted phase of the global rhythmic task. We suggest that movement variability metrics may provide additional information about the sense of rhythm, which should be explored more in future studies, not only dependent on fatigue.

Laning is a paradigmatic example of spontaneous organization in active two-component flows that has been observed in diverse contexts, including pedestrian traffic, driven colloids, complex plasmas, and molecular transport. We introduce a kinetic theory that elucidates the physical origins of laning and quantifies the propensity for lane nucleation in a given physical system. Our theory is valid in the low-density regime, and it makes different predictions about situations in which lanes may form that are not parallel with the direction of flow. We report on experiments with human crowds that verify two notable consequences of this phenomenon: tilting lanes under broken chiral symmetry and lane nucleation along elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic curves in the presence of sources or sinks.

BACKGROUND: In recent years the use of sample entropy (SampEn) to evaluate the complexity of the locomotor system in human gait data has gained in popularity. However, it has been suggested that SampEn is sensitive to various input parameters and signal preprocessing methods. This study quantified the effects of different temporal and spatial normalization approaches and various lengths of the template vector (m) on SampEn calculations. The discriminatory ability of SampEn was studied by comparing two walking conditions. METHODS: Twenty-three participants (seven males, 55.7 ± 8.5 years, 165.7 ± 7.9 cm, 80.5 ± 16.7 kg) walked on a treadmill with preferred (Vpref) and maximum (Vmax) speed. Data were segmented and resampled (SEGM), resampled and spatially normalized (NORM), resampled and detrended (ZERO). RESULTS: For vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and center of pressure in anterio-posterior direction (COPap), in both walking conditions, SampEn was generally sensitive to the vector length and not to the data processing, except for COPap in ZERO, m = 2, 4. For the COPml SampEn behaved oppositely, it was sensitive to preprocessing method and not to the m length. The regularity of COPap and vGRF in all processed signals increased in Vmax condition. For the COPml only two signals, WHOLE and ZERO, revealed increased complexity caused by more demanding walking conditions. CONCLUSIONS: SampEn was able to discriminate between different walking conditions in all analyzed variables, but not in all signals. Depending on evaluated variable, SampEn was susceptible in different way for the m level and processing method. Hence, these should be checked and selected for each variable independently. For future studies evaluating influence of walking velocity on COP and vGRF regularity during treadmill walking it is advised to use raw time series. Furthermore, to maintain template vector which represents biological relevance it is advised to detect highest frequencies present in analyzed signals and evaluate minimal time interval which can reflect change caused by response of a neuromuscular system. During evaluating treadmill walking measured with 100 Hz sampling frequency it is recommended to adopt m from 6 to 10, when average stride time is up to about 1 s.

The aim of the study was to examine whether the width of the base of support (BOS) has an influence on early postural adjustments (EPA) and armed upper limb and COM kinematics during lunging. Eight elite female fencers participated in the study. The displacement of the centre of foot pressure (COP) and kinematics of centre of mass (COM) were recorded using force platforms. The kinematics of the wrist of the armed upper limb were obtained using a 3D accelerometer. The results show that EPA were characterised by a very small COP displacement (about 0.6 to 1.2 cm). The COP amplitude showed a tendency to decrease with an increase in BOS width under reaction time conditions. In contrast, a greater BOS width was associated with a significant increase in COM acceleration at foot-off and peak COM acceleration during lunging also under reaction time instructions. The kinematics of the wrist were not influenced by BOS. The results show that in elite fencers, the upper limb movement is dissociated from the whole body movement. We suppose that a small COP amplitude is a postural skill which is integrated into the lunging skill and might influence the acceleration of COM.

The present study investigated whether expertise in fencing influences the onset of postural preparation during the fencing lunge and how it changes under different performance conditions. We also questioned if the onset of feedforward control can be categorized into one of the postural phases: anticipatory or early postural adjustment. Eight elite fencers and nine physical education students performed an attack with a lunge in self-paced and reaction time conditions from three different initial stance widths. The onset of the center of pressure (COP) displacement and EMG activities for the tibialis anterior (TA) of both limbs were recorded. The results show that expertise in fencing delays the onset of the activity of TA of the front leg and the onset of COP displacement during fencing lunge performance in comparison to controls. Additionally, in contrast to the control group, fencers produce typical APA patterns in the activation of TA under different performance conditions, delayed reaction time in comparison to self-initiated lunging, and constant time of APA onset under different widths of stance. According to different times and functions of TA activity and COP displacement in lunging, we propose to address them as anticipatory postural adjustment and early postural adjustment, respectively.

The uncontrolled manifold hypothesis is a method used to quantify motor synergies, defined as a specific central nervous system organization that maintains the task-specific stability of motor actions. The UCM allows for inter-trial variance analysis between consecutive trials. However, despite the large body of literature within this framework, there is no report on the number of movement repetitions required for reliable results. Based on the hypothetical hierarchical control of motor synergies, this study aims to determine the minimum number of trials necessary to achieve a good to excellent level of reliability. Thirteen young, healthy participants performed fifteen bilateral isometric contractions of elbow flexion when visual feedback was provided. The force and electromyography data were recorded to investigate synergies at different levels of hierarchical control. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the variance indices. Based on the obtained results, at least twelve trials are required to analyze the inter-trial variance in both force and muscle synergies within the UCM framework.

The details on how the position of balance examination is achieved (preceding movement) and what is happening after (subsequent movement) is scarce. We hypothesised that the postural sway in quiet standing can differ due to demanded stability or mobility associated with the preceding and subsequent action. The body sway will be lower with high stability demand task than a condition with high mobility task. Thirteen female ballet students were examined (aged 15.1 ± 0.95 years). Participants were examined in the single-legged standing position as a part of gait initiation (G-I, high mobility) and termination (G-T, high stability) task with the use of force plate. The following Centre of Pressure (COP) variables were analysed: range and standard deviation of COP position, mean COP velocity for AP (anterio-posterior) and ML (medio-lateral) planes. The results showed that for ML plane, body sway was larger for G-I than G-T task. The lowest values of all variables in AP plane (except the COP range) were for G-T task. This difference, confirm our hypothesis, where this difference is not caused by the skills of the participants, but due to the measuring procedure and motor behaviour before and after achieving the measurement position. Our conclusion is limited to the specific posture and homogenous participants.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the internal and external structure of basic acrobatic jumps. Eleven healthy elite artistic gymnasts (9 female, 2 male) participated in this study. Participants performed the following basic 'acrobatic' jumps: a tucked backward somersault (TS), a piked backward somersault (PS), and a countermovement jump (CMJ). Furthermore, female gymnasts also performed the backward handspring (HS), taking off and then landing on their hands in the same place - a specific jump only for women. All jumps were initiated from a stationary upright posture and with an arms swing. Six infrared cameras, synchronized with a module for wireless measurement of the electrical activity of eight muscles, and the force plate were used. Infrared camera-recordings were made in order to obtain kinematic variables describing the movement structure of the acrobatic jumps. These variables may explain the characteristics of muscle activation (the internal structure of the movement) and ground reaction force (the external-kinetic structure of the movement). However, for various technical reasons, it was not possible to register all the specified jumps in the protocol. Moreover, the distribution normalities, estimated by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, differed between variables. Therefore, to compare the data, the pair-wise nonparametric Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test was applied. The CMJ showed the highest level of vertical impulse, velocity, and displacement followed by the TS, PS, and HS. In the take-off phase of acrobatic jumps with rotation the average muscle activation levels of the biceps femoris were significantly higher and of the rectus femoris significantly lower than in the countermovement jump.

Understanding the structure and variability of motion is essential for sports technique development and an effective training design. Biomechanical analysis is particularly important in new disciplines with spatially complex motions, such as snowboarding. This study aimed to evaluate the level of variability of the kinematic variables in a single backside snowboard flip known as a "wildcat". Forty-six correct flips performed by 7 experienced athletes (age: 24.9 ± 4.34 year; body mass: 71.6 ± 12.87 kg; body height: 177.4 ± 6.99 cm) were recorded using an optoelectronic VICON system in the controlled setting of an indoor freestyle park. Athletes were equipped with special boards with wheels and the geometry of the ramps corresponded to the actual on-snow conditions. The analysis revealed two distinct single flip strategies, which differed in the way the tuck position was sustained. For all the measured variables, the coefficient of variation was computed, which allowed to identify the athlete with the highest (average 45.3%) and lowest (average 20.5%) variability of kinematic variables. Moreover, it was shown that the lowest values of the coefficient of variation occurred at the end of the grouping phase (average 14%) and that among all the different variables, those related to the duration of motion were most unstable (average 63%, SD = 48.5%).

Radial shock wave therapy (RSWT) has been recommended as an appropriate, safe and effective method in the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis (PF). The main purpose of this study was to examine how RSWT affects gait parameters. This study included 23 patients with unilateral, chronic PF. RSWT were administered in 5 interventions, during a consecutive 3-week period. Objective kinetic (force distribution under the forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot) and spatiotemporal parameters (cadence, step length, stance phase duration) during treadmill walking at, preferred" speed were evaluated on. 4 sessions: before therapy, immediately after (primary endpoint), 3 and 6 weeks after therapy. The mean reduction in the reported pain when taking first steps in the morning from baseline to the primary endpoint, 3- and 6-weeks post procedure was 42.7%, 50.1% and 66.9% respectively. Similar reduction was seen in the reported pain during walking. After the therapy during gait at the preferred speed patients had a significantly higher force beneath the rearfoot and forefoot of both limbs. Force beneath the midfoot was not significantly affected by treatment. The step length in both limbs increased by 3.3-3.6 cm after RSWT. After the therapy stance phase duration in symptomatic foot was longer by 7% and it slightly decreased until POST-6wk. Similar changes were seen in an asymptomatic limb. The spatiotemporal and kinetic results indicate that RSWT therapy induces changes in patient's gait structure and alter regional loading in the affected foot.

Functional stability has been studied in diverse populations, yet the possibility to compare the results across them and the knowledge about actual performance referenced to the maximum capacity is limited. Our aim was to improve the functional limits of stability testing and introduced Forward Functional Stability Indicator (FFSI) as a reliable measure of functional stability. The study participants were not able to cross the projected forward anatomical stability limit (FASL). It is located at the level of first metatarsophalangeal joints and should be considered a mechanical limit of the maximal voluntary centre of foot pressure (COP) excursion (MVE). It was only true when the whole feet were in contact with the ground. There were statistically significant differences in limits of stability (LOS) test results in the conditions when the heels were raised and the toes muscles were contracted isometrically. The proposed forward functional stability indicator (FFSI) is a highly reliable measure of functional stability, which provides information about the actual performance with reference to maximum capacity and is easy to compare across normal and clinical populations. •The proposed forward functional stability indicator (FFSI) is a highly reliable measure of functional stability.•FFSI provides information about the actual performance with reference to maximum capacity and is easy to compare across normal and clinical populations.•The forward anatomical stability limit (FASL) is located at the level of first metatarsophalangeal joints and should be considered a mechanical limit of the maximal voluntary centre of pressure (COP) excursion when certain measurement criteria are met.

RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to examine the postural sway characteristics of the ballet dance experts in quiet standing and at their limits of stability with an approach not used before in dancers. METHODS: The study was conducted on thirteen female ballet dancers and thirteen non-training females. The data were collected with a use of a force plate. To gain a better insight into the postural control processes, we used the rambling-trembling and sample entropy analyses in the COP data processing. RESULTS: The main findings of the study showed professional dancers to have higher values of postural sway characteristics in comparison to the non-trainees while performing simple motor tasks. Also, higher values of the trembling component in the group of dancers during quiet standing and the inclined positions were observed. This might be a sign of higher capacity of the postural system to deal with postural instability in dancers. IMPORTANCE: Our results confirmed that the visual information is important in the process of postural control of dancers', which is proven by increased dislocations of the COP without visual feedback. The sample entropy results indicated more irregular characteristics of postural sway in ballet dancers representing more automated postural control. The data analysis methods showed high sensitivity to the subtle changes in postural control due to the dance training.

PURPOSE: The patients expect optimal knee function after Total Knee Arthroplasty. It is necessary to apply appropriate surgical technique and supervised physical therapy. The optimal management of posterior cruciate ligament remains controversial. Both implant designs, i.e., cruciate retaining and posterior substituting, allow the orthopedic surgeon to achieve excellent clinical outcomes, as measured by commonly used questionnaires. Such methods of assessment may poorly reflect the functional status of patients. Therefore, three-dimensional gait analysis is recommended to evaluate the outcomes of surgical intervention. This study sought to determine differences in kinematic gait parameters and Knee Society Score between cruciate-retaining and posterior-substituting patients. METHODS: 23 individuals after cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty and 19 individuals after posterior-substituting total knee arthroplasty were subjected to gait analysis using three-dimensional motion capture system BTS Smart DX 7000. In addition, gait was assessed in 21 patients with knee osteoarthritis and in 30 healthy individuals. RESULTS: The study did not reveal differences between cruciate-retaining and posterior-substituting groups, both in terms of Knee Society Score and kinematic gait parameters. There were also no differences in kinematic gait parameters between patients from the knee osteoarthritis group and total knee arthroplasty groups. The analyzed parameters in all of the groups differed significantly from those found in healthy individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical technique and implant design do not affect values of kinematic gait parameters evaluated under natural walking speed. Several months after surgery the patients still demonstrated alterations in gait pattern, similar to those recorded in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Despite the obvious advantages and popularity of static posturography, universal standards for posturographic tests have not been developed thus far. Most of the center-of-foot pressure (COP) indices are strongly dependent on an individual experimental design, and are susceptible to distortions, which makes results of their analysis incomparable. In this research, we present a novel approach to the analysis of the COP trajectory based on the directional features of postural sway. Our novel output measures: the sway directional indices (DI) and sway vector (SV) were applied to assess the postural stability in the group of young able-bodied subjects. Towards this aim, the COP trajectories were recorded in 100 students standing still for 60 s, with eyes open (EO) and then, with eyes closed (EC). Each record was subdivided then into 20, 30 and 60 s samples. Interclass correlation coefficients were calculated from the samples. The controlled variables (visual conditions) uniquely affected the output measures, but only in case of proper signal pretreatment (low-pass filtering). In filtering below 6 Hz, the DI and SV provided a unique set of descriptors for postural control. Both sway measures were highly independent of the trial length and the sampling frequency, and were unaffected by the sampling noise. Directional indices of COP filtered at 6 Hz showed high to very high reliability, with ICC range of 0.7-0.9. Results of a single 60 s trial are sufficient to reach acceptable reliability for both DI and SV. In conclusion, the directional sway measures may be recommended as the primary standard in static posturography.

This longitudinal study aimed to compare static postural stability in women between early pregnancy, advanced pregnancy, and at 2 and 6 months postpartum. Forty-five pregnant women were enrolled and 31 completed the protocol. Data were collected at 7-16 and 34-39 weeks gestation, and at 6-10 and 26-30 weeks postpartum. For each subject, the center of foot pressure path length and mean velocity (with directional subcomponents) were computed from 30-s long quiet-standing trials on a stationary force plate with eyes open or closed. The body mass, stance width, and sleep duration within 24 h before testing were also recorded. Static postural stability was not different between pregnancy and postpartum, except for the anterior posterior sway tested in the eyes-closed condition, which was significantly increased in late pregnancy compared to that at 2 and 6 months postpartum. Pregnant/postpartum women's body mass weakly positively correlated with anterior-posterior sway in the eyes-closed condition and their stance width weakly positively correlated with the anterior-posterior sway in the eyes-open condition. No effect of sleep duration on postural sway was found. Our findings indicate that under visual deprivation conditions women in advanced pregnancy may have decreased static stability compared to their non-pregnant state.

BACKGROUND: Swedish massage is one of the common treatments to provide optimal start and readiness of athletes. The ability of kinesthetic differentiation (KD) is crucial in sport performance. This skill allows to adapt demanded muscle forces to optimize the motor tasks, and it is responsible for the precision. In the literature, there is no evidence how Swedish massage influences the kinesthetic differentiation. PURPOSE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of Swedish massage on the kinesthetic differentiation and muscle strength of hand grip. METHODS: Thirty participants took part in this investigation (17 women and 13 men). The assessment consisted of KD tests conducted on the dominant (DH) and nondominant hand (NDH) after 15 minutes of hand and forearm Swedish massage. The procedure consisted of 13 trials for each extremity. The first three were done for 100% of the participants' capabilities (Fmax), the next five trials were done using 50% of maximum force (50% of Fmax), and in the last five trials, the participants tried to use only 50% of their previous force (1/2 of 50%). Finally, the absolute force production error (FPE) was calculated for 50% (FPE_50%) and 25% (FPE_25%). RESULTS: The two-way repeated measure analysis of variance ANOVA did not reveal any statistically significant changes in maximal strength grip and KD between pre- and postmassage intervention in both DH and NDH hand. Correlations showed strong relationship between pre- and postmassage for maximum force (r = 0.92, p = .01 for DH, and r = 0.94, p = .01 for NDH), and only for the FPE_50% (r = 0.67, p = .01 for DH, and r = 0.71, p = .01 for NDH). CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained indicated that the application of the Swedish massage did not affect the kinesthetic differentiation in this particular young adult group.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to determine whether women who exercised during and after pregnancy had better static postural stability compared to those who did not exercise. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Posturographic tests were performed in 31 women at 34-39 weeks gestation, and again at 6-10 weeks postpartum. The center of pressure mean velocity (with directional subcomponents) and sway area were computed from 30-s quiet standing trials on a stationary force plate with eyes open or closed. The women were surveyed about their lifestyle and physical activity in the perinatal period. Based on the survey, 12 of the women were assigned as regular exercisers and 19 as non-exercisers. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare data of the exercisers and the non-exercisers in their advanced pregnancy and again at 2 months postpartum. RESULTS: Postural sway measures were not significantly different between the exercisers and the non-exercisers in advanced pregnancy and at 2 months postpartum (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Individually performed physical activity during the perinatal period did not affect pregnant/postpartum women's postural stability characteristics of quiet standing.

The study aimed to establish the short-term and long-term effects of whole-body vibration on postural stability. The sample consisted of 28 male subjects randomly allocated to four comparative groups, three of which exercised on a vibration platform with parameters set individually for the groups. The stabilographic signal was recorded before the test commenced, after a single session of whole-body vibration, immediately after the last set of exercises of the 4-week whole-body vibration training, and one week after the training ended. The subjects were exposed to vibrations 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Long-term vibration training significantly shortened the rambling and trembling paths in the frontal plane. The path lengths were significantly reduced in the frontal plane one week after the training end date. Most changes in the values of the center of pressure (COP) path lengths in the sagittal and frontal plane were statistically insignificant. We concluded that long-term vibration training improves the postural stability of young healthy individuals in the frontal plane.

The study aimed to establish the short- and long-term effects of vibration on postural stability in young men. A single set of exercises and a 4-week vibration training were assessed for their impact on the center of foot pressure (COP) sway. The sample consisted of 49 male subjects randomly allocated to seven comparative groups, six of which exercised on a vibration platform whose parameters were set individually for the groups. Group VII was the control group. The stabilographic signal was recorded before the test commenced, after a single application of vibration, before the last set of exercises of the 4-week vibration training, immediately afterwards, as well as one week and one month after the training ended. The subjects were exposed to vibration 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Both a single application of vibration and the 4-week vibration training had an effect on all parameter values, but most changes were statistically insignificant. Group III was the only one where the COP sway in the anterior-posterior direction significantly increased after a single exposure to vibration and significantly decreased in both anterior-posterior and medio-lateral planes one week after vibration training compared with the pre-test recordings.

The center of pressure (COP) measures are most commonly used in postural studies (e.g., COP range, sway path length and mean COP velocity). Relatively new method based on the equilibrium point hypothesis that addresses more explicitly the dynamic nature of COP and represents more subtle aspects of postural control is the rambling (RM) and trembling (TR) decomposition of a stabilogram. With this method, the COP trajectory can be decomposed into deviations resulting from supraspinal (i.e., RM) and spinal processes (i.e., TR). The trajectory generated by shifting COP is referred to as RM and its difference from the original COP signal is referred to as TR. Although there is still scientific discussion as to whether this method gives valuable additional information about postural control processes, it is gaining popularity. Unfortunately, there is lack of standardization in the methodology of data collection for this approach, particularly with respect to the number of trial repetitions and their duration. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability of RM-TR measurements. Fifteen young, healthy male subjects performed ten 120-s trials of quiet standing. Measurements of RM, TR and COP were calculated using the first 30, 60, 90 and 120-s of each trial. An ANOVA-based ICC model was used to estimate the reliability. The results of this study suggest that at least three 60-s trials should be used when using selected measures of RM-TR.
