RESUMEN

AIM: This systematic review aimed to identify the needs and preferences for cancer care services among Australian First Nations people. DESIGN: Integrative review. DATA SOURCES: An integrative review was conducted. A wide range of search terms were used to increase the sensitivity and specificity of the searches in electronic databases. Methodological quality assessment, data extraction, was conducted independently by two reviewers, and a narrative synthesis was conducted. RESULTS: Forty-two studies were included. A total of 2965 Australian First Nations adults, both men and women of various ages across the lifespan, were represented; no First Nations children affected by cancer were represented in the studies. Three themes emerged which included: (1) discrimination, racism and trauma, resulting from colonization, directly impacted First National people's cancer care experience; (2) cultural ways of knowing, being and doing are fundamental to how First Nations people engage with cancer care services; and (3) First Nations people need culturally safe person-centred cancer care services that address practical needs. CONCLUSION: Most participants represented in this review experienced discrimination, racism and trauma, resulting from colonization, which directly negatively impacted Aboriginal peoples' cancer care experience. While the Optimal Cancer Pathway (OCP) was launched in Australia several years ago, people with cancer may continue to experience distressing unmet care needs. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Our team includes both First Nations people, non-First Nations researchers and healthcare professionals with expertise in cancer care. The researchers employed decolonizing restorative approaches to ensure voice, respect, accountability and reciprocity in this review work. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Members of the multidisciplinary team including nurses and policymakers should reflect on these findings, ensure that they have up-to-date cultural safety training and stand together with Indigenous and non-Indigenous cancer leaders to take proactive steps to stamp out and dismantle oppression in health, and safely implement the OCP.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to understand the experiences, needs, and preferences for supportive care, among children and adolescents (0-19 years) diagnosed with cancer. METHODS: A qualitative systematic review has been reported according to PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases (APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Medline) and citation searches. Studies were screened according to pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality was evaluated. Findings were extracted in relation to the context of interest of experiences, needs, and preferences of supportive care. Each finding was accompanied by a qualitative verbatim illustration representing the participant's voice. RESULTS: 4449 publications were screened, and 44 studies were included. Cancer populations represented in the included studies included lymphoma, leukaemia, brain cancer, sarcomas, and neuroblastoma. Two overarching synthesised findings were identified as (1) coping, caring relationships, communication, and impact of the clinical environment, and (2) experiences of isolation, fear of the unknown, restricted information, and changing self. Children and adolescents articulated that cancer care would be enhanced by developing a sense of control over their body and healthcare, being involved in communication and shared decision-making, and ensuring the clinical environment is age-appropriate. Many experienced a sense of disconnection from the rest of the world (including peers, school, and experiences of prejudice and bullying), and a lack of tailored support and information were identified as key unmet care needs that require further intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Children and adolescent who are diagnosed with cancer are a unique and understudied group in oncological survivorship research, with the slowest progress in improvement of care over time. This review will facilitate the development of future interventions and promote the importance of tailored support for children and adolescents at all stages of the cancer journey. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Children and adolescents continue to experience a range of difficulties despite routine contact with cancer healthcare professionals. Children and adolescents should be carefully assessed about their individual circumstances and preferences for support given the clear implications from this review that "one size" does not fit all.

PURPOSE: To critically synthesise qualitative research to understand experiences of supportive care in people affected by brain cancer and their informal caregivers. METHODS: A qualitative systematic review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs methodology and has been reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Guidelines. Electronic databases were searched by an expert systematic review librarian for all qualitative studies irrespective of research design. All publications were double screened by two reviewers using a pre-determined exclusion and inclusion criteria. The review was managed using Covidence systematic review software. Methodological quality assessment and data extraction were performed. Qualitative findings accompanied by illustrative quotes from included studies were extracted and grouped into categories, which created the overall synthesised findings. RESULTS: A total of 33 studies were included which represented a total sample of 671 participants inclusive of 303 patients and 368 informal caregivers. There was a total of 220 individual findings included in this review, which were synthesised into two findings (1) caregivers and patients perceived supports which would have been helpful and (2) caregiver and patient experiences of unmet supportive care needs. CONCLUSION: This review highlighted the suffering and distress caused by brain cancer and associated treatments. Both patients and their informal caregivers experienced disconnect from themselves in renegotiating roles, and a profound sense of loneliness as the physical deterioration of the disease progressed. Both patients and informal caregivers reported similar unmet needs within the current service provision for brain cancer. However, what is apparent is that current cancer services are provided solely for patients, with little or no consideration to the support needs of both the patient and their informal caregiver. Service re-design is needed to improve care coordination with individualised informational support, implementation of holistic needs assessments for both the patients and their caregivers, better community support provision, improved opportunities for emotional care with early referral for palliative care services. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: It is recommended that members of the multidisciplinary brain cancer team reflect on these findings to target holistic needs assessments and develop shared self-management care plans for both the patient and the informal caregiver.

Galaxies are surrounded by large reservoirs of gas, mostly hydrogen, that are fed by inflows from the intergalactic medium and by outflows from galactic winds. Absorption-line measurements along the lines of sight to bright and rare background quasars indicate that this circumgalactic medium extends far beyond the starlight seen in galaxies, but very little is known about its spatial distribution. The Lyman-α transition of atomic hydrogen at a wavelength of 121.6 nanometres is an important tracer of warm (about 104 kelvin) gas in and around galaxies, especially at cosmological redshifts greater than about 1.6 at which the spectral line becomes observable from the ground. Tracing cosmic hydrogen through its Lyman-α emission has been a long-standing goal of observational astrophysics1-3, but the extremely low surface brightness of the spatially extended emission is a formidable obstacle. A new window into circumgalactic environments was recently opened by the discovery of ubiquitous extended Lyman-α emission from hydrogen around high-redshift galaxies4,5. Such measurements were previously limited to especially favourable systems6-8 or to the use of massive statistical averaging9,10 because of the faintness of this emission. Here we report observations of low-surface-brightness Lyman-α emission surrounding faint galaxies at redshifts between 3 and 6. We find that the projected sky coverage approaches 100 per cent. The corresponding rate of incidence (the mean number of Lyman-α emitters penetrated by any arbitrary line of sight) is well above unity and similar to the incidence rate of high-column-density absorbers frequently detected in the spectra of distant quasars11-14. This similarity suggests that most circumgalactic atomic hydrogen at these redshifts has now been detected in emission.

OBJECTIVES: Dandruff is a chronic, relapsing scalp condition that negatively impacts the quality of life of sufferers. Regular use of anti-fungal shampoos represents a proven therapeutic strategy to improve the most common symptoms of flakes and itch. Two recent approaches for enhancing the efficacy of anti-fungal shampoos are maximizing bio-availability of the active material or the addition of a second active material. Our aim is to compare the therapeutic efficacy of these two approaches - maximization of bio-availability of the zinc pyrithione (ZPT) active material or the combination of ZPT with a secondary active material. METHODS: The anti-fungal potency of shampoos representing each of these approaches was evaluated in vitro using a standard microbiology method. Spatial delivery of ZPT particles in the follicular infundibulum was assessed in vivo using a novel confocal microscopy methodology. Clinical efficacy was assessed in a randomized, double-blind trial involving 620 male and female subjects using scalp flaking and epidermal histamine level as endpoints. RESULTS: The shampoo formula with maximized ZPT bio-availability known as the Potentiated ZPT formula exhibited greater anti-fungal potency than the Dual Active shampoo containing both ZPT and climbazole. The Potentiated ZPT formula also delivered more ZPT to the lower infundibulum than the Dual Active shampoo. A 4-week treatment with the Potentiated ZPT formula resulted in superior clinical efficacy compared with the Dual Active product at all 4 weekly time points for both flaking and epidermal histamine endpoints. CONCLUSION: These results highlight the critical role that the shampoo vehicle plays in realizing full potency of active materials. By optimizing the delivery vehicle, the enhanced anti-fungal potency and the maximized spatial delivery of active materials result in greater symptomatic improvement than a product with two active materials. The therapeutic efficacy of a product based on a complex delivery vehicle such as a shampoo must be considered from a full-product perspective rather than just the active system as the non-active components of the composition will often play a significant role in the overall product pharmacology and resultant efficacy.

We use helium atom scattering to investigate the structures formed by Li adsorption onto Cu(001) in the 0-2 ML regime. Submonolayer growth at 180 K proceeds through a sequence of ordered overlayers, including a c(2 × 2) structure at 0.5 ML and a series of 'ladder' superlattices around 0.6 ML. Beyond 1 ML, incommensurate, three-dimensional Li islands develop. A quantum close-coupled scattering analysis is performed to study the empirical He-surface potential of the structurally heterogeneous ladder structures. Good agreement with the measured distribution of diffracted intensity is obtained by describing the He-ladder interaction potential as the summation of only six one-dimensional Fourier components. The fitted potential indicates a remarkably flat surface that is punctuated by substantial, striped protrusions in the electron density. The result is consistent with the formation of one-dimensional Li wires, indicating an inhomogeneous metallization process.

A highly-efficient dynamic assembly method for the transformation of the initial spongy lamellar structure of concentrated linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, LAS, incorporated with sodium silicate, into spherulitic vesicles is presented. A combination of drag and pressure flows, via twin screw extrusion, was used to mitigate the ubiquitous viscoplasticity and the wall slip behavior of the anionic surfactant paste and gave rise to the dynamic assembly of stable vesicular nanostructures within a narrow size range, that was not possible with either pure drag or pure pressure flows. Concomitantly with the structure transformation of the paste during assembly under the combination of pressure and drag flows, significant changes in its viscoelasticity, i.e., order of magnitude increases in storage and loss moduli and magnitude of complex viscosity, were observed. The demonstrated dynamic assembly of stable vesicular nanostructures, with vesicle diameters within the relatively narrow range of 300-600 nm, from a commodity surfactant is relevant to myriad templating and encapsulation applications, as well as shedding light on the mechanisms of the deformation-induced planar lamellar to vesicle transformation of concentrated amphiphiles.

The importation of dogs into the United States poses a risk for the introduction of rabies and other zoonotic diseases. Federal regulations (42 CFR 71.51) currently require proof of valid rabies vaccination for imported dogs, but allow the importation of some unvaccinated dogs, including dogs less than 3 months of age, provided certain requirements for confinement are met until the dog is vaccinated. Although there are no accurate surveillance data on the number of dogs imported each year, it is estimated based on extrapolated data that over 287,000 dogs were imported into the United States during 2006. Of these, approximately 25% were either too young to be vaccinated or lacked proof of valid rabies vaccination. Import trends suggest that an increasing number of unvaccinated puppies are being imported into the United States, many through commercial resale or rescue operations. Since 2004, foreign canine rabies virus variants have been documented in at least two imported puppies. Federal regulations are currently being reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine if they can be updated to address current import trends and disease risks, such as requiring a health screen and valid rabies vaccinations for all dogs prior to entry.

The prevalence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 on beef subprimal cuts intended for mechanical tenderization was evaluated. This evaluation was followed by the assessment of five antimicrobial interventions at minimizing the risk of transferring E. coli O157:H7 to the interior of inoculated subprimal cuts during blade tenderization (BT) or moisture enhancement (ME). Prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 on 1,014 uninoculated beef subprimals collected from six packing facilities was 0.2%. Outside round pieces inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 at 10(4) CFU/100 cm2 were treated with (i) no intervention, (ii) surface trimming, (iii) hot water (82 degrees C), (iv) warm 2.5% lactic acid (55 degrees C), (v) warm 5.0% lactic acid (55 degrees C), or (vi) 2% activated lactoferrin followed by warm 5.0% lactic acid (55 degrees C) and then submitted to BT or ME. Prevalence (n=196) of internalized (BT and ME) E. coli O157:H7 was 99%. Enumeration of E. coli 0157:H7 (n=192) revealed mean surface reductions of 0.93 to 1.10 log CFU/100 cm2 for all antimicrobial interventions. E. coli O157:H7 was detected on 3 of the 76 internal BT samples and 73 of the 76 internal ME samples. Internal ME samples with no intervention had significantly higher mean E. coli O157:H7 populations than did those internal samples treated with an intervention, but there were no significant differences in E. coli O157:H7 populations among internal BT samples. Results of this study demonstrate that the incidence of E. coli O157:H7 on the surface of beef subprimal cuts is low and that interventions applied before mechanical tenderization can effectively reduce the transfer of low concentrations of E. coli O157:H7 to the interior of beef subprimal cuts.

High-velocity galactic outflows, driven by intense bursts of star formation and black hole accretion, are processes invoked by current theories of galaxy formation to terminate star formation in the most massive galaxies and to deposit heavy elements in the intergalactic medium. From existing observational evidence (for high-redshift galaxies) it is unclear whether such outflows are localized to regions of intense star formation just a few kiloparsecs in extent, or whether they instead have a significant impact on the entire galaxy and its surroundings. Here we present two-dimensional spectroscopy of a star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 3.09 (seen 11.5 gigayears ago, when the Universe was 20 per cent of its current age): its spatially extended Lyalpha line emission appears to be absorbed by H i in a foreground screen covering the entire galaxy, with a lateral extent of at least 100 kpc and remarkable velocity coherence. This screen was ejected from the galaxy during a starburst several 10(8) years earlier and has subsequently swept up gas from the surrounding intergalactic medium and cooled. This demonstrates the galaxy-wide impact of high-redshift superwinds.

The heat resistance of susceptible and multiantimicrobial-resistant Salmonella strains grown to stationary phase in glucose-free tryptic soy broth supplemented with 0.6% yeast extract (TSBYE-G; nonadapted), in regular (0.25% glucose) TSBYE, or in TSBYE-G with 1.00% added glucose (TSBYE+G; acid adapted) was determined at 55, 57, 59, and 61 degrees C. Cultures were heated in sterile 0.1% buffered peptone water (50 microl) in heat-sealed capillary tubes immersed in a thermostatically controlled circulating-water bath. Decimal reduction times (D values) were calculated from survival curves having r(2) values of >0.90 as a means of comparing thermal tolerance among variables. D(59 degrees C) values increased (P < 0.05) from 0.50 to 0.58 to 0.66 min for TSBYE-G, TSBYE, and TSBYE+G cultures, respectively. D(61 degrees C) values of antimicrobial-susceptible Salmonella strains increased (P < 0.05) from 0.14 to 0.19 as the glucose concentration increased from 0.00 to 1.00%, respectively, while D(61 degrees C) values of multiantimicrobial-resistant Salmonella strains did not differ (P > 0.05) between TSBYE-G and TSBYE+G cultures. When averaged across glucose levels and temperatures, there were no differences (P > 0.05) between the D values of susceptible and multiantimicrobial-resistant inocula. Collectively, D values ranged from 4.23 to 5.39, 1.47 to 1.81, 0.50 to 0.66, and 0.16 to 0.20 min for Salmonella strains inactivated at 55, 57, 59, and 61 degrees C, respectively. z(D) values were 1.20, 1.48, and 1.49 degrees C for Salmonella strains grown in TSBYE+G, TSBYE, and TSBYE-G, respectively, while the corresponding activation energies of inactivation were 497, 493, and 494 kJ/mol. Study results suggested a cross-protective effect of acid adaptation on thermal inactivation but no association between antimicrobial susceptibility and the ability of salmonellae to survive heat stress.

This study compared acid resistance levels among five antimicrobial-susceptible strains of Salmonella and five strains that were simultaneously resistant to a minimum of six antimicrobial agents. The induction of a stationary-phase acid tolerance response (ATR) was attempted by both transient low-pH acid shock and acid adaptation. For acid shock induction, strains were grown for 18 h in minimal E medium containing 0.4% glucose (EG medium) and exposed to sublethal acid stress (pH 4.3) for 2 h, and subsequently, both shocked and nonshocked cultures were acid challenged (pH 3.0) for 4 h. Acid adaptation was achieved by growing strains for 18 h in tryptic soy broth containing 1.0% glucose (TSB+G), while nonadapted cultures were grown for 18 h in glucose-free tryptic soy broth (TSB-G). Acid-adapted and nonadapted inocula were acid challenged (pH 2.3) for 4 h. Initial (0 h) mean populations of nonchallenged Salmonella were 8.5 to 8.7, 8.4 to 8.8, and 8.2 to 8.3 log CFU/ml for strains grown in EG medium, TSB-G, and TSB+G, respectively. After 4 h of acid challenge, mean populations were 3.0 to 4.8 and 2.5 to 3.7 log CFU/ml for previously acid-shocked susceptible and resistant strains, respectively, while corresponding counts for nonshocked strains were 4.3 to 5.5 log CFU/ml and 3.9 to 4.9 log CFU/ml. Following 4 h of acid exposure, acid-adapted cultures of susceptible and resistant strains had mean populations of 6.1 to 6.4 log CFU/ml and 6.4 to 6.6 log CFU/ml, respectively, while corresponding counts for nonadapted cultures were 1.9 to 2.1 log CFU/ml and 1.8 to 2.0 log CFU/ml, respectively. A low-pH-inducible ATR was not achieved through transient acid shock, while an ATR was evident following acid adaptation, as adapted populations were 4.2 to 4.8 log units larger than nonadapted populations following acid exposure. Although some strain-dependent variations in acid resistance were observed, results from this study suggest no association between susceptibility to antimicrobial agents and the ability of the Salmonella strains evaluated to survive low-pH stress.

This study compared sampling methods for detecting Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella in beef cattle feces and on hides and carcasses and for enumerating E. coli biotype I counts (ECC) on carcasses. Fecal samples were collected by rectal/colonal palpation and colonal sponge swabbing. Hides were sampled by sponge swabbing three sites, hair clipping, excision, rinsing, and gauze swabbing, whereas carcasses were sampled by three-site thoracic and pattern-mark sponge swabbing and tissue excision. Overall, irrespective of sampling method, 36.7, 13.3, and 0.0% of lots contained at least one E. coli O157:H7-positive hide, fecal, and carcass sample, respectively, while the corresponding prevalence of Salmonella was 70.0, 16.7, and 6.7%, respectively. For hide sampling, excision and gauze swabbing yielded the fewest (13.3%) E. coli O157:H7-positive samples, while hair clipping and sponge swabbing yielded the most (23.3%). None of the carcass-sampling methods detected E. coli O157:H7 or differed (P > 0.05) in their ability to enumerate ECC. Colonal swabbing was the most effective (10.0%) method for detecting E. coli O157:H7 in feces. No differences (P > 0.05) in Salmonella prevalence were observed between carcass-sampling methods, although three-site sponge swabbing and tissue excision detected the most (3.3%). Hide rinsing was the most effective (P < 0.05) Salmonella detection method (63.3%), but dangers associated with its application may preclude its use by industry; there were no differences (P > 0.05) among other hide-sampling methods. No differences (P > 0.05) in Salmonella detection were observed between fecal-sampling methods. Overall, three-site sponge swabbing was the most feasible and effective sampling method for the detection of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella on hides and carcasses.

This study determined the prevalence of Salmonella on beef animal hides and carcasses and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles against a panel of 13 antibiotics. In each of the eight commercial packing facilities, of which five processed primarily heifers and steers and the remaining three processed primarily cows and bulls, hide and carcass sponge swab samples were obtained immediately before hide removal and before carcass chilling, respectively. Overall, prevalence of Salmonella on external surfaces (hides) of cattle was 15.4% (49 of 319), whereas prevalence after dehiding and other slaughtering/dressing processes, including the application of decontamination treatments, was, as expected, reduced (P < 0.05) to 1.3% (4 of 320) on carcass surfaces. From 53 total Salmonella-positive hide and carcass samples, 526 biochemically confirmed isolates were obtained to determine antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. Of 53 Salmonella-positive samples, individually, 24 (45.3%), 17 (32.1%), 17 (32.1%), 11 (20.8%), 8 (15.1%), 8 (15.1%), 8 (15.1%), 4 (7.5%), and 2 (3.8%) samples yielded at least one isolate resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, tetracycline, streptomycin, sulfonamides, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, respectively. None of the Salmonella-positive samples yielded an isolate resistant to ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, or levofloxacin. Although none of the samples yielded an isolate simultaneously resistant to three or four antimicrobials, a total of eight samples yielded at least one isolate resistant to five or more antimicrobials tested. Included among the 18 group B-positive samples were three samples that, individually, yielded at least one Salmonella Typhimurium var. Copenhagen DT104 isolate resistant to at least six antimicrobials tested. Results from this study support current prudent therapeutic and subtherapeutic antimicrobial use recommendations.

Inhaled corticosteroids in pressurized metered does inhalers (pMDIs) are often delivered via a large volume spacer device, but these are bulky and inconvenient. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) provide a highly portable and convenient propellant-free alternative to pMDIs for asthma maintenance therapy However, each DPI could have unique in vivo delivery characteristcs. In order to quantify the total and regional lung deposition of budesonide (200 microg) from (a) Easyhaler, (b) Turbuhaler and (c) pMDI plus Nebuhaler 750 ml spacer, a three-way randomized cross-over study was carried out in 12 mild to moderate asthmatic patients. Deposition was quantified by the imaging technique of gamma scintigraphy Optimal inhalation techniques were used throughout. Mean (SD) whole lung deposition (% metered dose) was similar for Easyhaler [18.5 (7.8) %] and Turbuhaler [21.8 (8.2) %], but was significantly higher for pMDI plus Nebuhaler [44.1 (10.0) %, P < 0.01]. The regional distribution patterns in the lungs were predominantly central for all three devices. Nebuhaler reduced oropharyngeal deposition significantly compared with the two DPIs. Easyhaler showed comparable deposition to Turbuhaler and hence drugs delivered by Easyhaler would be expected to have a similar clinical effect to those delivered by Turbuhaler in asthma maintenance therapy.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), used in metered dose inhalers (MDIs), have been identified as being deleterious to the environment leading to a ban on their production. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are a widely used alternative to MDIs. One disadvantage of DPIs is that in vivo lung deposition can be influenced by the patient's inspiratory flow rate. The ASTA Medica multi-dose dry powder inhaler (AM-MDPI) has been designed to offer low resistance on inhalation, so that asthmatic patients can achieve inhaled flow rates of approximately 90 L x min(-1). The aim of the study was to evaluate the in vivo deposition of budesonide from the AM-MDPI at different flow rates and to compare this with delivery from a Turbuhaler DPI at a high flow rate. The study was a scintigraphic, randomized, crossover study in which 13 healthy volunteers inhaled a single 200 microg dose of radiolabelled budesonide on four separate occasions with a minimum 44-h washout period between dosings. At the lowest flow rate of 54 L x min(-1), comparable to that for the Turbuhaler (58 L x min(-1)), a similar percentage of the metered dose was delivered to the lung (AM-MDPI median 19.9%; Turbuhaler median 21.4%). At high flow rate (peak inspiratory flow rate 99 L x min(-1)) the AM-MDPI delivered significantly more drug to the lung (median 32.1% of metered dose) than at 65 L x min(-1) or 54 L x min(-1) (median 25.0% and 19.9% of metered dose, respectively), thus demonstrating flow rate dependence. The pattern of regional lung deposition from the AM-MDPI was similar for all three inhalation manoeuvres. It was concluded that the ASTA Medica multi-dose dry powder inhaler achieves at least as much deposition of budesonide in the lungs as a Turbuhaler when used at similar inspiratory flow rates.

Multiple-sequential interventions were applied commercially to reduce beef carcass contamination in eight packing plants. The study evaluated microbial populations on animal hides and changes in carcass microbial populations at various stages in the slaughtering process. Sponge swab samples yielded mean (log CFU/100 cm2) total plate counts (TPC), total coliform counts (TCC), and Escherichia coli counts (ECC) on the exterior hide in the ranges of 8.2 to 12.5, 6.0 to 7.9, and 5.5 to 7.5, respectively, while corresponding contamination levels on carcass surfaces, after hide removal but before application of any decontamination intervention, were in the ranges of 6.1 to 9.1, 3.0 to 6.0, and 2.6 to 5.3, respectively. Following the slaughtering process and application of multiple-sequential decontamination interventions that included steam vacuuming, pre-evisceration carcass washing, pre-evisceration organic acid solution rinsing, hot water carcass washing, postevisceration final carcass washing, and postevisceration organic acid solution rinsing, mean TPC, TCC, and ECC on carcass surfaces were 3.8 to 7.1, 1.5 to 3.7, and 1.0 to 3.0, respectively, while corresponding populations following a 24 to 36 h chilling period were 2.3 to 5.3, 0.9 to 1.3, and 0.9, respectively. The results support the concept of using sequential decontamination processes in beef packing plants as a means of improving the microbiological quality of beef carcasses.

Postinflammatory scarring is characterized by changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) composition and progressive loss of normal resident cells. In glomerular inflammation there is now evidence that unscheduled apoptosis (programmed cell death) of mesangial and other resident cells may mediate progression to irreversible glomerulosclerosis. In the current study we examined the hypothesis that ECM components may differ in their capacity to support mesangial cell survival by suppression of apoptosis. Using a well-established in vitro model of mesangial cell apoptosis, we found that collagen IV and laminin, components of normal mesangial ECM, protected rat mesangial cells from apoptosis induced by serum starvation and DNA damage, by a beta(1) integrin-mediated, but arg-gly-asp (RGD)-independent mechanism. In contrast, collagen I, fibronectin, and osteonectin/SPARC, which are overexpressed in diseased glomeruli, failed to promote rat mesangial cell survival. However, the survival-promoting effect of collagen IV and laminin was not associated with changes in cellular levels of apoptosis regulatory proteins of the Bcl-2 family. These experiments demonstrate that glomerular mesangial cell survival is dependent on interactions with ECM and provide insights into potential mechanisms by which resident cell loss may occur during acute inflammation and postinflammatory scarring of the kidney and other organs.
