RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Whole blood (WB) transfusions in trauma represent an increasingly utilized resuscitation strategy in trauma patients. Previous reports suggest a probable mortality benefit with incorporating WB into massive transfusion protocols. However, questions surrounding optimal WB practices persist. We sought to assess the association between the proportion of WB transfused during the initial resuscitative period and its impact on early mortality outcomes for traumatically injured patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of severely injured patients requiring emergent laparotomy and ≥ 3 units of red blood cell containing products (WB or packed red blood cells) within the first hour from an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center (2019-2022). Patients were evaluated based on the proportion of WB they received compared to packed red blood cells during their initial resuscitation (high ratio cohort ≥50% WB vs low ratio cohort <50% WB). Multilevel Bayesian regression analyses were performed to calculate the posterior probabilities and risk ratios (RR) associated with a WB predominant resuscitation for early mortality outcomes. RESULTS: 266 patients were analyzed (81% male, mean age of 36 years old, 61% penetrating injury, mean ISS of 30). The mortality was 11% at 4-hours and 14% at 24-hours. The high ratio cohort demonstrated a 99% (RR 0.12; 95% CrI 0.02-0.53) and 99% (RR 0.22; 95% CrI 0.08-0.65) probability of decreased mortality at 4-hours and 24-hours, respectively, compared the low ratio cohort. There was a 94% and 88% probability of at least a 50% mortality relative risk reduction associated with the WB predominate strategy at 4 hours and 24 hours, respectively. CONCLUSION: Preferential transfusion of WB during the initial resuscitation demonstrated a 99% probability of being superior to component predominant resuscitations with regards to 4 and 24-hour mortality suggesting that WB predominant resuscitations may be superior for improving early mortality. Prospective, randomized trials should be sought. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic, Level III.

Introduction: Whole blood (WB) transfusion represents a promising resuscitation strategy for trauma patients. However, a paucity of data surrounding the optimal incorporation of WB into resuscitation strategies persists. We hypothesized that traumatically injured patients who received a greater proportion of WB compared with blood product components during their resuscitative efforts would have improved early mortality outcomes and decreased transfusion requirements compared with those who received a greater proportion of blood product components. Methods: Retrospective review from our Level 1 trauma center of trauma patients during their initial resuscitation (2019-2022) was performed. WB to packed red blood cell ratios (WB:RBC) were assigned to patients based on their respective blood product resuscitation at 1, 2, 3, and 24 hours from presentation. Multivariable regression models were constructed to assess the relationship of WB:RBC to 4 and 24-hour mortality, and 24-hour transfusion requirements. Results: 390 patients were evaluated (79% male, median age of 33 years old, 48% penetrating injury rate, and a median Injury Severity Score of 27). Overall mortality at 4 hours was 9%, while 24-hour mortality was 12%. A significantly decreased 4-hour mortality was demonstrated in patients who displayed a WB:RBC≥1 at 1 hour (5.9% vs. 12.3%; OR 0.17, p=0.015), 2 hours (5.5% vs. 13%; OR 0.16, p=0.019), and 3 hours (5.5% vs. 13%, OR 0.18, p<0.01), while a decreased 24-hour mortality was displayed in those with a WB:RBC≥1 at 24 hours (7.9% vs. 14.6%, OR 0.21, p=0.01). Overall 24-hour transfusion requirements were significantly decreased within the WB:RBC≥1 cohort (12.1 units vs. 24.4 units, p<0.01). Conclusion: Preferential WB transfusion compared with a balanced transfusion strategy during the early resuscitative period was associated with a lower 4 and 24-hour mortality, as well as decreased 24-hour transfusion requirements, in trauma patients. Future prospective studies are warranted to determine the optimal use of WB in trauma. Level of evidence: Level III/therapeutic.

Objectives: Following up trauma patients after discharge, to evaluate their subsequent quality of life and functional outcomes, is notoriously difficult, time consuming, and expensive. Automated systems are a conceptually attractive solution. We prospectively assessed the feasibility of using a series of automated phone calls administered by Emmi Patient Engagement to survey trauma patients after discharge. Methods: Recruitment into the study was incorporated into the patient discharge process by nursing staff. For this pilot, we included trauma patients discharging home and who were able to answer phone calls. A script was created to evaluate the Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale and the EuroQol EQ-5D to assess functional status and quality of life, respectively. Call attempts were made at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after discharge. Results: A total of 110 patients initially agreed to participate. 368 attempted patient encounters (calls or attempted calls) took place, with 104 (28.3%) patients answering a least one question in the study. 21 unique patients (19.1% of those enrolled) completed 27 surveys. Conclusions: Automated, scripted phone calls to survey patients after discharge are not a feasible way of collecting functional and quality of life data. Level of evidence: Level II/prospective.

Over the past decades, increasing environmental temperatures have been identified as one of the causes of major insect population declines and biodiversity loss. However, it is unclear how these rising temperatures affect endoheterothermic insects, like bumblebees, that have evolved thermoregulatory capacities to exploit cold and temperate habitats. To investigate this, we measured head, thoracic, and abdominal temperature of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) workers across a range of temperatures (24 °C-32 °C) during three distinct behaviors. In resting bumblebees, the head, abdomen, and thorax conformed to the environmental temperature. In pre-flight bumblebees, the head and abdominal temperatures were elevated with respect to the environmental temperature, while the thoracic temperature was maintained, indicating a pre-flight muscle warming stage. In post-flight bumblebees, abdominal temperature increased at the same rate as environmental temperature, but the head and the thoracic temperature did not. By calculating the excess temperature ratio, we show that thermoregulation in bumblebees during flight is partially achieved by the active transfer of heat produced in the thorax to the abdomen, where it can more easily be dissipated. These results provide the first indication that the thermoregulatory abilities of bumblebees are plastic and behavior dependent. We also show that the flight speed and number of workers foraging increase with increasing temperature, suggesting that bees do not avoid flying at these temperatures despite its impact on behavioral performance.

Introduction: Graduate Medical Education plays a critical role in training the next generation of military physicians, ensuring they are ready to uphold the dual professional requirements inherent to being both a military officer and a military physician. This involves executing the operational duties as a commissioned leader while also providing exceptional medical care in austere environments and in harm's way. The purpose of this study is to review prior efforts at developing and implementing military unique curricula (MUC) in residency training programs. Methods: We performed a literature search in PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, Web of Science, and the Defense Technical Information Center through August 8, 2023, including terms "graduate medical education" and "military." We included articles if they specifically addressed military curricula in residency with terms including "residency and operational" or "readiness training", "military program", or "military curriculum". Results: We identified 1455 articles based on title and abstract initially and fully reviewed 111. We determined that 64 articles met our inclusion criteria by describing the history or context of MUC, surveys supporting MUC, or military programs or curricula incorporated into residency training or military-specific residency programs. Conclusion: We found that although there have been multiple attempts at establishing MUC across training programs, it is difficult to create a uniform curriculum that can be implemented to train residents to a single standard across services and specialties.

INTRODUCTION: The Pragmatic Randomized Optimal Platelet and Plasma Ratios (PROPPR) trial rapidly enrolled patients based on an ABC ≥ 2 score, or Physician Gestalt (PG) when ABC score was <2. The objective of this study was to describe what patients were enrolled by the two methods and whether patient outcomes differed based these enrollments. We hypothesized that there would be no differences in outcomes based on whether patients were enrolled via ABC score or PG. METHODS: Patients were enrolled with an ABC ≥ 2 or by PG when ABC was <2 by the attending trauma surgeon. We compared 1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, 18- and 24-hour mortality, 30-day mortality, time to hemostasis, emergent surgical or interventional radiology procedure and the proportion of patients who required either >10 units of blood in 24 hours or > 3 units in one hour. RESULTS: Of 680 patients, 438 (64%) were enrolled on the basis of an ABC score ≥ 2 and 242 (36% by PG when the ABC score was <2. Patients enrolled by PG were older (median 44, IQR 28-59, p < 0.001), more likely to be white (70.3% vs 60.3%, p = 0.014), and more likely to have been injured by blunt mechanisms (77.3% vs 37.2%, p < 0.001). They were also less hypotensive and less tachycardic than patients enrolled by ABC score (both p < 0.001). The groups had similar Injury Severity Scores in the ABC ≥ 2 and PG groups (26 and 27 respectively) and were equally represented (49.1% and 50.8% respectively) in the 1:1:1 treatment arm. There were no significant differences between the ABC score and PG groups for mortality at any point. Time to hemostasis (108 for patients enrolled on basis of Gestalt, vs. 100 mins for patients enrolled on basis of ABC score), and the proportion of patients requiring a massive transfusion (>10 units/24 h) (44.2% vs. 47.3%), or meeting the critical administration threshold (>3 unit/1 hr) (84.7% vs. 89.5%) were similar (p = 0.071). CONCLUSION: Early identification of trauma patients likely to require a massive transfusion is important for clinical care, resource use, and selection of patients for clinical trials. Patients enrolled in the PROPPR trial based on PG when the ABC score was <2 represented 36% of the patients and had identical outcomes to those enrolled on the basis of an ABC score of ≥2. The most effective way to avoid intense inter- and intra-specific competition at the dung source, and to increase the distance to the other competitors, is to follow a single straight bearing. While ball-rolling dung beetles manage to roll their dung balls along nearly perfect straight paths when traversing flat terrain, the paths that they take when traversing more complex (natural) terrain are not well understood. In this study, we investigate the effect of complex surface topographies on the ball-rolling ability of Kheper lamarcki. Our results reveal that ball-rolling trajectories are strongly influenced by the characteristic scale of the surface structure. Surfaces with an increasing similarity between the average distance of elevations and the ball radius cause progressively more difficulties during ball transportation. The most important factor causing difficulties in ball transportation appears to be the slope of the substrate. Our results show that, on surfaces with a slope of 7.5 deg, more than 60% of the dung beetles lose control of their ball. Although dung beetles still successfully roll their dung ball against the slope on such inclinations, their ability to roll the dung ball sideways diminishes. However, dung beetles do not seem to adapt their path on inclines such that they roll their ball in the direction against the slope. We conclude that dung beetles strive for a straight trajectory away from the dung pile, and that their actual path is the result of adaptations to particular surface topographies.

Global warming has been identified as one of the main drivers of population decline in insect pollinators. One aspect of the insect life cycle that would be particularly sensitive to elevated temperatures is the developmental transition from larva to adult. Temperature-induced modifications to the development of body parts and sensory organs likely have functional consequences for adult behaviour. To date, we have little knowledge about the effect of sub-optimal temperature on the development and functional morphology of different body parts, particularly sensory organs, in ectothermic solitary pollinators such as butterflies. To address this knowledge gap, we exposed the pupae of the butterfly Pieris napi to either 23 °C or 32 °C and measured the subsequent effects on eclosion, body size and the development of the wings, proboscis, eyes and antennae. In comparison to individuals that developed at 23 °C, we found that exposure to 32 °C during the pupal stage increased mortality and decreased time to eclose. Furthermore, both female and male butterflies that developed at 32 °C were smaller and had shorter proboscides, while males had shorter antennae. In contrast, we found no significant effect of rearing temperature on wing and eye size or wing deformity. Our findings suggest that increasing global temperatures and its corresponding co-stressors, such as humidity, will impact the survival of butterflies by impairing eclosion and the proper development of body and sensory organs.

Introduction: The Pragmatic Randomized Optimal Platelet and Plasma Ratios (PROPPR) trial failed to demonstrate a mortality difference for hemorrhaging patients receiving a balanced (1:1:1) vs a 1:1:2 resuscitation at 24 hours and 30 days. Recent guidelines recommend earlier mortality end points for hemorrhage-control trials, and the use of contemporary statistical methods. The aim of this post hoc analysis of the PROPPR trial was to evaluate the impact of a balanced resuscitation strategy at early resuscitation time points using a Bayesian analytical framework. Methods: Bayesian hierarchical models were created to assess mortality differences at the 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours time points between study cohorts. Posterior probabilities and Bayes factors were calculated for each time point. Results: A 1:1:1 resuscitation displayed a 96%, 99%, 94%, 92%, 96%, and 94% probability for mortality benefit at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours, respectively, when compared with a 1:1:2 approach. Associated Bayes factors for each respective time period were 21.2, 142, 14.9, 11.4, 26.4, and 15.5, indicating 'strong' to 'decisive' supporting evidence in favor of balanced transfusions. Conclusion: This analysis provides evidence in support that a 1:1:1 resuscitation has a high probability of mortality benefit when compared with a 1:1:2 strategy, especially at the newly defined more proximate time points during the resuscitative period. Researchers should consider using Bayesian approaches, along with more proximate end points when assessing hemorrhage-related mortality, for the analysis of future clinical trials. Polarized light-based navigation in insects is facilitated by a polarization-sensitive part of the eye, the dorsal rim area (DRA). Existing methods to study the anatomy of the DRA are destructive and time-consuming. We presented a novel method for DRA localization, dissection, and measurement using 3D volumetric images from X-ray micro-computed tomography in combination with 2D photographs. Applying the method on size-polymorphic buff-tailed bumblebees, Bombus terrestris, we found that the DRA was easily obtainable from photographs of the dorsal eye region. Allometric analysis of the DRA in relation to body size in B. terrestris showed that it increased with the body size but not at the same rate. By localizing the DRA of individual bumblebees, we could also perform individual-level descriptions and inter-individual comparisons between the ommatidial structures (lens, crystalline cones, rhabdoms) of three different eye regions (DRA, non-DRA, proximate to DRA). One feature distinct to the bumblebee DRA was the smaller dimension of the crystalline cones in comparison to other regions of the eye. Using our novel methodology, we provide the first individual-level description of DRA ommatidial features and a comparison of how the DRA varies with body size in bumblebees.

Landing is a critical phase for flying animals, whereby many rely on visual cues to perform controlled touchdown. Foraging honeybees rely on regular landings on flowers to collect food crucial for colony survival and reproduction. Here, we explored how honeybees utilize optical expansion cues to regulate approach flight speed when landing on vertical surfaces. Three sensory-motor control models have been proposed for landings of natural flyers. Landing honeybees maintain a constant optical expansion rate set-point, resulting in a gradual decrease in approach velocity and gentile touchdown. Bumblebees exhibit a similar strategy, but they regularly switch to a new constant optical expansion rate set-point. In contrast, landing birds fly at a constant time to contact to achieve faster landings. Here, we re-examined the landing strategy of honeybees by fitting the three models to individual approach flights of honeybees landing on platforms with varying optical expansion cues. Surprisingly, the landing model identified in bumblebees proved to be the most suitable for these honeybees. This reveals that honeybees adjust their optical expansion rate in a stepwise manner. Bees flying at low optical expansion rates tend to increase their set-point stepwise, while those flying at high optical expansion rates tend to decrease it stepwise. This modular landing control system enables honeybees to land rapidly and reliably under a wide range of initial flight conditions and visual landing platform patterns. The remarkable similarity between the landing strategies of honeybees and bumblebees suggests that this may also be prevalent among other flying insects. Furthermore, these findings hold promising potential for bioinspired guidance systems in flying robots.

BACKGROUND: At the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a multi-tiered military-civilian partnership (MCP) has evolved since 2006. We aimed to outline this model to facilitate potential replication nationally. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive review of the partnership between UAB, the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, and the Department of Defense (DoD) reviewing key documents and conducting interviews with providers. As a purely descriptive study, this project did not involve any patient data acquisition or analysis and therefore was exempt from institutional review board approval per institutional policy. RESULTS: At the time of this review, six core programs existed targeting training, clinical proficiency, and research. Training: (1) The Special Operations Center for Medical Integration and Development trains up to 144 combat medics yearly. (2) UAB trains one integrated military Surgery resident yearly with two additional civilian-sponsored military residents in Emergency Medicine. (3) UAB's Surgical Critical Care Fellowship had one National Guard member with two incoming Active-Duty, one Reservist and one prior service member in August 2022. Clinical Proficiency: (4) UAB hosts four permanently assigned United States Air Force Special Operations Command Special Operations Surgical Teams composed of general surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, surgical technologists, emergency physicians, critical care registered nurses, and respiratory therapists totaling 24 permanently assigned active-duty health care professionals. (5) In addition, two fellowship-trained Air Force Trauma Critical Care Surgeons, one Active-Duty and one Reservist, are permanently assigned to UAB. These clinicians participate fully and independently in the routine care of patients alongside their civilian counterparts. Research: (6) UAB's Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery is currently conducting nine DoD-funded research projects totaling $6,482,790, and four research projects with military relevance funded by other agencies totaling $15,357,191. CONCLUSION: The collaboration between UAB and various elements within the DoD illustrates a comprehensive approach to MCP. Replicating appropriate components of this model nationally may aid in the development of a truly integrated trauma system best prepared for the challenges of the future. Local coexistence of bees has been explained by flower resource partitioning, but coexisting bumblebee species often have strongly overlapping diets. We investigated if light microhabitat niche separation, underpinned by visual traits, could serve as an alternative mechanism underlying local coexistence of bumblebee species. To this end, we focused on a homogeneous flower resource-bilberry-in a heterogeneous light environment-hemi-boreal forests. We found that bumblebee communities segregated along a gradient of light intensity. The community-weighted mean of the eye parameter-a metric measuring the compromise between light sensitivity and visual resolution-decreased with light intensity, showing a higher investment in light sensitivity of communities observed in darker conditions. This pattern was consistent at the species level. In general, species with higher eye parameter (larger investment in light sensitivity) foraged in dimmer light than those with a lower eye parameter (higher investment in visual resolution). Moreover, species realized niche optimum was linearly related to their eye parameter. These results suggest microhabitat niche partitioning to be a potential mechanism underpinning bumblebee species coexistence. This study highlights the importance of considering sensory traits when studying pollinator habitat use and their ability to cope with changing environments.

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in acute trauma patients is a poorly characterized event. While ECMO most commonly has been deployed for advanced cardiopulmonary or respiratory failure following initial resuscitation, growing levels of evidence for out of hospital cardiac arrest support early ECMO cannulation as part of resuscitative efforts. We sought to perform a descriptive analysis evaluating traumatically injured patients, who were placed on ECMO, during their initial resuscitation period. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the Trauma Quality Improvement Program Database from 2017 to 2019. All traumatically injured patients who received ECMO within the first 24 hours of their hospitalization were assessed. Descriptive statistics were used to define patient characteristics and injury patterns associated with the need for ECMO, while mortality represented the primary outcome evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 696 trauma patients received ECMO during their hospitalization, of which 221 were placed on ECMO within the first 24 hours. Early ECMO patients were on average 32.5 years old, 86% male, and sustained a penetrating injury 9% of the time. The average ISS was 30.7, and the overall mortality rate was 41.2%. Prehospital cardiac arrest was noted in 18.2% of the patient population resulting in a 46.8% mortality. Of those who underwent resuscitative thoracotomy, a 53.3% mortality rate was present. CONCLUSION: Early cannulation for ECMO in severely injured patients may provide an opportunity for rescue therapy following severe injury patterns. Further evaluation regarding the safety profile, cannulation strategies, and optimal injury patterns for these techniques should be evaluated.

BACKGROUND: Innovative solutions to resupply critical medical logistics and blood products may be required in future near-peer conflicts. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used in austere environments and may be a viable platform for medical resupply and the transport of blood products. METHODS: A literature review on PubMed and Google Scholar up to March of 2022 yielded a total of 27 articles that were included in this narrative review. The objectives of this article are to discuss the current limitations of prehospital blood transfusion in military settings, discuss the current uses of UAVs for medical logistics, and highlight the ongoing research surrounding UAVs for blood product delivery. DISCUSSION: UAVs allow for the timely delivery of medical supplies in numerous settings and have been utilized for both military and civilian purposes. Investigations into the effects of aeromedical transportation on blood products have found minimal blood product degradation when appropriately thermoregulated and delivered in a manner that minimizes trauma. UAV delivery of blood products is now actively being explored by numerous entities around the globe. Current limitations surrounding the lack of high-quality safety data, engineering constraints over carrying capacity, storage capability, and distance traveled, as well as air space regulations persist. CONCLUSION: UAVs may offer a novel solution for the transport of medical supplies and blood products in a safe and timely manner for the forward-deployed setting. Further research on optimal UAV design, optimal delivery techniques, and blood product safety following transport should be explored prior to implementation.

The impact of global warming on wild bee decline threatens the pollination services they provide. Exposure to temperatures above optimal during development is known to reduce adult body size but how it affects the development and scaling of body parts remains unclear. In bees, a reduction in body size and/or a reduction in body parts, such as the antennae, tongue and wings, and how they scale with body size (i.e. their allometry) could severely affect their fitness. To date, it remains unclear how temperature affects body size and the scaling of morphological traits in bees. To address this knowledge gap, we exposed both males and workers of Bombus terrestris to elevated temperature during development and assessed the effects on (i) the size of morphological traits and (ii) the allometry between these traits. Colonies were exposed to optimal (25°C) or stressful (33°C) temperatures. We then measured the body size, wing size, antenna and tongue length, as well as the allometry between these traits. We found that workers were smaller and the antennae of both castes were reduced at the higher temperature. However, tongue length and wing size were not affected by developmental temperature. The allometric scaling of the tongue was also affected by developmental temperature. Smaller body size and antennae could impair both individual and colony fitness, by affecting foraging efficiency and, consequently, colony development. Our results encourage further exploration of how the temperature-induced changes in morphology affect functional traits and pollination efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Access to surgical training is challenging for undergraduate and early postgraduate trainees due to a greater focus on developing generic knowledge and skills, and a drive to recruit greater numbers into internal medicine and primary care. COVID-19 accelerated the declining access to surgical training environments. Our aims were to: 1) establish the feasibility of an online, specialty-specific, case-based surgical training series, and 2) evaluate its suitability for meeting the needs of trainees. METHODS: A nationwide audience of undergraduate and early postgraduate trainees were invited to a series of bespoke online case-based educational meetings in Trauma & Orthopaedics (T&O) over a six month period. The six sessions, which simulated real-world clinical meetings, were constructed by Consultant sub-specialists and involved the presentation of cases by registrars, followed by structured discussion of basic principles, radiological interpretation, and management strategies. Mixed qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted. RESULTS: There were 131 participants (59.5% male), consisting mostly of doctors in training (58%) and medical students (37.4%). The mean quality rating was 9.0/10 (SD 1.06), further supported by qualitative analysis. 98% enjoyed the sessions, 97% reported improved knowledge of T&O, and 94% reported a direct benefit to clinical practice. There was a significant improvement in knowledge of T&O conditions, management plans, and radiological interpretation (p = <0.05). CONCLUSION: Structured virtual meetings, underpinned by bespoke clinical cases, may widen access to T&O training, increase flexibility and robustness of learning opportunities, and mitigate the effects of reduced exposure on preparation for surgical careers and recruitment.

Many insects rely on path integration to define direct routes back to their nests. When shuttling hundreds of meters back and forth between a profitable foraging site and a nest, navigational errors accumulate unavoidably in this compass- and odometer-based system. In familiar terrain, terrestrial landmarks can be used to compensate for these errors and safely guide the insect back to its nest with pin-point precision. In this study, we investigated the homing strategies employed by Camponotus fulvopilosus ants when repeatedly foraging no more than 1.25 m away from their nest. Our results reveal that the return journeys of the ants, even when setting out from a feeder from which the ants could easily get home using landmark information alone, are initially guided by path integration. After a short run in the direction given by the home vector, the ants then switched strategies and started to steer according to the landmarks surrounding their nest. We conclude that even when foraging in the close vicinity of its nest, an ant still benefits from its path-integrated vector to direct the start of its return journey.

Ball rolling dung beetles use a wide range of cues to steer themselves along a fixed bearing, including the spectral gradient of scattered skylight that spans the sky. Here, we define the spectral sensitivity of the diurnal dung beetle Kheper lamarcki and use the information to explore the orientation performance under a range of spectral light combinations. We find that, when presented with spectrally diverse stimuli, the beetles primarily orient to the apparent brightness differences as perceived by their green photoreceptors. Under certain wavelength combinations, they also rely on spectral information to guide their movements, but the brightness and spectral directional information is never fully disentangled. Overall, our results suggest the use of a dichromatic, primitive colour vision system for the extraction of directional information from the celestial spectral gradient to support straight-line orientation.
