RESUMEN

Organotin compounds (OTC), tri-, di- and monobutyl tin, were determined in the tissues of marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the Adriatic Sea. Marbled electric ray specimens were provided by local fishermen from three localities in the northern Adriatic: area close to the shipyard in Seca, the natural protected area Strunjan Nature Reserve and along the west Istrian coast. To assess the concentration of OTC in the environment, sediment samples were also analysed. After an adequate extraction of OTC from both matrices, their concentrations were determined by GC-ICP-MS. The results indicate that the accumulation of TBT (tributyltin) and DBT (dibutyltin) in the marbled electric ray is related to the possible pollution sources, since their total concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the area close to the shipyard (up to 69 µg Sn kg-1, w.w.) in comparison to the other two areas less affected by direct pollution (up to 7 µg Sn kg-1, w.w.). TBT concentrations ranged from 2 to 42 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., DBT concentrations were in the range from 2 to 22 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., and MBT concentrations were mostly below the detection limit with the highest up to 4 µg Sn kg-1, w.w. The proportion of the three determined congener concentrations in sediment samples indicate a temporally older pollution with these compounds, with prevailing DBT and MBT concentrations up to 30 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., and much lower TBT concentrations up to 7 µg Sn kg-1, w.w. According to our results, marbled electric ray could be considered as an ideal bioindicator of environmental pollution due to its ecological characteristics.

Concern regarding microplastic (MP) pollution in aquatic ecosystems has increased in recent years with growing awareness of the environmental harm that it causes. While most studies have focused on seas and oceans, knowledge of MP occurrence in freshwater sediments is limited. This study investigated MP concentrations at shore sediments of the Zeta, Moraca, and Bojana rivers in Montenegro. The MP concentration in the studied samples varied depending on the river, location, and sampling season. MP abundance in river shore sediments varied between mean values of 145 ± 110 MPs/kg for the Zeta, 169 ± 113 MPs/kg for the Moraca, and 180 ± 53.5 MPs/kg dry sediment for the Bojana. In comparison, the mean MP abundance in the three rivers combined was 163.6 ± 96.1 MPs/kg of dry sediment. The identified MPs were mainly fibres and fragments of blue, red and clear color, 0.5-1 mm in size, and mainly composed of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate. The main contribution of this study is that it provides new insight into MP abundance in freshwater sediments of rivers, where the studied rivers were identified as a potential important sink and source of MP on the Montenegrin coast.

Among the various exometabolitic effects of marine microorganisms, massive mucilage events in the coastal zones of temperate and tropical seas are the most spectacular and environmentally important. Abundant mucilage material in the form of aggregates appears in late spring/early summer in the water column of the Adriatic Sea. These macroaggregate biopolymers originate mainly from plankton exometabolites, with both autochthonous and allochthonous components, and strongly impact the tourism, fisheries, and economy of coastal countries. In contrast to extensive studies on the structural and chemical nature of macroaggregates performed over past decades, the full elemental composition of these substances remains poorly known, which does not allow for a complete understanding of their origin, evolution, and necessary remediation measures. Here, we report the results of comprehensive analyses of 55 major and trace elements in the composition of macro aggregates collected at the surface and in the water column during massive mucilage events. Through normalization of the elemental chemical composition of the upper earth crust (UCC), river suspended material (RSM), mean oceanic plankton, and mean oceanic particulate suspended material, we demonstrate that the water column macroaggregates reflect a superposition of the signal from plankton and marine particulate matter. The surface macroaggregates were preferentially enriched in lithogenic component, and carried the signature of planktonic material. The rare earth element (REE) signal was strongly dominated by plankton and, to a lesser degree, by oceanic particulate matter, while at the same time being strongly (>80 times) impoverished compared with UCC and RSM. Taken together, the elemental composition of macroaggregates allows for distinguishing the lithogenic and biogenic impacts on the occurrence of these unique large-scale mucilage events, linked to the exometabolism of marine plankton combined with the input of allochthonous inorganic material.

Muscle tissues of Mullus barbatus and Merluccius merluccius were analyzed for the presence of selected trace elements (As, Hg, Cd, and Pb) to determine the value of the daily intake of trace elements from fish consumption and to assess the risk to human health. The mean concentrations of As in the muscle tissue of M. barbatus and M. merluccius for the entire period were 19.689 mg/kg wet weight (ww) and 8.356 mg/kg ww, Hg 0.497 mg/kg ww and 0.153 mg/kg ww, and Pb 0.031 mg/kg ww and 0.025 mg/kg ww, respectively. The concentrations of Cd in all fish sampled were below the detection limit (<0.02 mg/kg ww). The evaluation of the potential health risk assessments based on the target hazard quotient (THQ) and estimated daily intake (EDI) indicated that the intake of As in both fish species and Hg for M. barbatus could pose an appreciable risk to human health. The calculated hazard index (HI) was higher than 1 for both fish species. The continuous monitoring of trace elements' concentrations in fish is strongly recommended, as the results demonstrate potential health risks due to the presence of As and Hg.

This study evaluated the microplastic abundance, shape, color, size and chemical composition of microplastic in mussels and estimated human exposure to microplastic through consumption of mussels collected from Boka Kotorska Bay (Adriatic coast of Montenegro). Microplastic was found in 53.3% of the studied mussels, with an average microplastic abundance of 2.53 ± 1.1 items/individual. Most of the ingested microplastic were fibers (63.7%), which were blue in color. FT-IR revealed that 98% of the examined particles were plastic, with seven polymers identified, of which polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate were the most abumdant polymers in mussels. Three of the polymers detected in mussels (polyamide, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene) are classified as hazardous by the European Chemical Agency with warning or danger signals. With one serving of mussels, consumers would ingest 22.7 microplastic particles, while the annual dietary intake of microplastic via consumption of mussels was estimated at 99 MP/year.

The aquatic ecosystems of the world are highly burdened with microplastics (MPs; particles <5 mm). There is a great need for better understanding of patterns of MP pollution across catchments and rivers of different sizes, anthropogenic pressures and hydrogeomorphological features. In this study, we investigated the MP concentrations including their characteristics (polymer type, shape, size and colour), and MP distribution in water and sediments of two hydrogeomorphologically different small-scale catchments (< 800 km2), namely Kamniska Bistrica (KB) and Ljubljanica (LJ), Slovenia. The main objective of this study was to gain a better understanding of how WWTP effluents and catchment urbanisation together with the diversity of natural hydrogeomorphology, affect the quantity and quality of MP pollutants in the rivers with smaller catchments. Significantly different mean MP concentrations were found in the water columns (KB: 59 ± 16 items m-3; LJ: 31 ± 14 items m-3), but not in the sediments (KB: 22 ± 20 items kg-1; LJ: 23 ± 25 items kg-1). A longitudinal gradient with increasing particle concentration was observed in both water and sediment samples and in both catchments. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) particles dominated in all samples. Fibres were predominant in the water column samples, while fragments were more common in the sediment samples. MP particles were mostly coloured, and most of them were smaller than 2 mm in both water and sediment samples. The critical evaluation of the results and previous studies suggest that the characteristics of the catchment (anthropogenic pressures, size, climate, etc.), the hydrogeomorphology of the river (sediment type, discharge, flow velocity etc.), the sampling location along the river, the sampled compartment (water, sediment), the sampling method, and the hydrometeorological characteristics at the time of sampling, are important factors for observed MP concentrations and other characteristics.

In this study, the possible 'vector effect' within the exposure of Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) to polystyrene microplastics with adsorbed fluoranthene was investigated by applying the multibiomarker approach. The major focus was placed on genotoxicological endpoints as to our knowledge there are no literature data on the genotoxicity of polystyrene microparticles alone or with adsorbed fluoranthene in the selected experimental organisms. DNA damage was assessed in haemocytes by comet assay and micronucleus test. For the assessment of neurotoxicity, acetylcholinesterase activity was measured in gills. Glutathione S-transferase was assessed in gills and hepatopancreas since these enzymes are induced for biotransformation and excretion of lipophilic compounds such as hydrocarbons. Finally, differences in physiological response within the exposure to polystyrene particles, fluoranthene, or particles with adsorbed fluoranthene were assessed by the variation of heart rate patterns studied by the noninvasive laser fibre-optic method. The uniform response of individual biomarkers within the exposure groups was not recorded. There was no clear pattern in variation of acetylcholinesterase or glutathione S-transferase activity which could be attributed to the treatment. Exposure to polystyrene increased DNA damage which was detected by the comet assay but was not confirmed by micronucleus formation. Data of genotoxicity assays indicated differential responses among the groups exposed to fluoranthene alone and fluoranthene adsorbed to polystyrene. Change in the heart rate patterns within the studied groups supports the concept of the Trojan horse effect within the exposure to polystyrene particles with adsorbed fluoranthene.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the biotic and abiotic components of the marine environment poses a major threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. The objective of this study was to document, for the first time, differences in MP accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract of two commercially important fish species and to evaluate the possible correlation between MP accumulation in the biotic (fish) and abiotic (sediment) components of the marine environment of the Montenegrin coast (Adriatic Sea). Samples were collected from two areas of the Montenegrin coast, Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open sea. The frequency of MP ingestion was 58.6 % for Mullus barbatus and 54 % for Merluccius merluccius, while the average number of ingested MPs was 2.9 ± 0.5 and 3.2 ± 1.0 items/individual, respectively. Average MP abundance in surface sediments from Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open sea was 315 ± 45 and 435 ± 258 MPs/kg of dry sediment, respectively. Most MPs identified were filaments, followed by fragments and films, while the most abundant polymers found in fish and sediments samples were polypropylene and polyethylene. The present results indicate that MP pollution in the study area is reflected in the accumulation of MPs in the biotic (fish) and abiotic (sediment) components of the marine environment. Measures need to be taken to reduce the input of plastics/MPs into the marine environment.

Purpose: Plastic pollution in the world has led to an abundance of microplastics (MPs) and has been identified as a potential factor that can lead to serious environmental problems, especially in oceans and seas. Information on the current status of MPs pollution along the Montenegrin coast is insufficiently investigated. This study monitors the abundance, distribution, and sources of MPs, and identifies present polymers in the surface sediment of the Montenegrin coast, as well as comparison with previous research. Materials and methods: Ten sampling sites along the Montenegrin coast were selected to collect surface sediment samples. The upper layer of sediment (0-5 cm) was collected by a Petite ponar grab. The samples were dried, and density separation was performed using a NaCl solution. The abundance and morphological characteristics of MPs were determined using an optical microscope (DP-Soft software), while FT-IR analysis was done to identify the polymer type. Results and discussion: Microplastics were identified in all sediment samples with an average abundance of 307 ± 133 (SD) MPs/kg in dry sediment. The highest abundance of MPs was found in locations in the vicinity of highly populated areas, near wastewater discharges, and areas with high fishing and tourist activities. The most dominant shape types of MPs in all samples were filaments and fragments. The most common colors of MPs were blue and red, while the dominant MPs sizes were 0.1-0.5 mm and 0.5-1.0 mm. Of the eight identified polymers, PP, PE, and PET were the most common. Conclusion: This study reveals MPs characteristics (abundance, distribution, shape type, colors, size, polymers type) in surface sediment along the Montenegrin coast, as well as the most significant sources of MPs pollution, and provides important data for further research on MPs to identify the effects of MPs pollution on the quality, health, and functionality of the marine environment.

Chemical pollution is a major environmental concern especially in coastal areas, having adverse impacts on marine organisms and ecosystem services. Macroalgae can accumulate trace elements, but available studies are restricted to a limited number of elements and species. The goal of this research was to assess, seasonally, the concentrations of 22 elements in the brown alga Padina pavonica from monitoring sampling sites in Slovenian waters. The concentration of most elements in thalli differed significantly between spring and autumn, with generally higher levels in autumn samples. However, it was not possible to correlate these concentrations with the ecological status of macroalgae. The maximum values set by European regulations for the potentially hazardous As, Cd and Hg in food and feed were never exceeded, while Pb concentrations were slightly higher. The results show that P. pavonica can act as an effective bioindicator of chemical pollution.

RESUMEN

The amount of plastic waste and microplastics released into marine environments has increased rapidly in recent decades. The durability of plastic materials results in major problems following their release into the environment. This study provides an overview of recent findings on issues related to plastic degradation, the accumulation of microplastics in mussels and fishes, and the toxicological effects associated with the ingestion of microplastics. These findings confirm the serious problem of slowly degrading plastics (which rarely degrade fully) in natural marine environments. Microplastics have become widespread pollutants and have been detected in mussels and fish around the world. Microplastic particles, whether virgin or with adsorbed pollutants on their surfaces, pose a health problem after being ingested by marine organisms. This paper ends by highlighting the need for certain improvements in studies of these phenomena.

Increasing amounts of plastic waste in the environment and their fragmentation into smaller particles known as microplastics (particles, <5mm) have raised global concerns due to their persistency in the environment and their potential to act as vectors for harmful substances or pathogenic microorganisms. One possible solution to this problem is biodegradation of plastics by microorganisms. However, the scientific information on plastic-degrading microorganisms is scattered across different scientific publications. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) with predefined criteria using the online databases of Scopus and Web of Science to find papers on bacterial biodegradation of synthetic petroleum-based polymers. The aims of this SLR were to provide an updated list of all of the currently known bacteria claimed to biodegrade synthetic plastics, to determine and define the best methods to assess biodegradation, to critically evaluate the existing studies, and to propose directions for future research on polymer biodegradation in support of more rapid development of biodegradation technologies. Most of the bacteria identified here from the 145 reviewed papers belong to the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, and most were isolated from contaminated sites, such as landfill sites. Just under a half of the studies (44%) investigated the biodegradability of polyethylenes and derivates, particularly low-density polyethylenes. The methods used to monitor the biodegradation were mainly scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. We propose that: (1) future research should focus on biodegradation of microplastics arising from the most common pollutants (e.g. polyethylenes); (2) bacteria should be isolated from environments that are permanently contaminated with plastics; and (3) a combination of different observational methods should be used to confirm bacterial biodegradation of these plastics. Finally, when reporting, researchers need to follow standard protocols and include all essential information needed for repetition of the experiments by other research groups.

Concentrations, spatial distribution and sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons (AH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in surface seawater of the Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic. This area is one of the most industrialized and urbanized areas in the northern Adriatic with intense maritime traffic. The surface seawater samples were collected at 31 sites and total hydrocarbon concentrations were determined. In general, concentrations (0.1 to 43.2 µg l-1, mean 4.8 µg l-1, Chrysene equivalents) were higher in summer. Concentrations of total aliphatic hydrocarbons were from 17.2 to 2326.5 µg l-1 (mean 543.3 µg l-1). The major component was the unresolved complex mixture (UCM), comprising from 78% to 97% of the total aliphatic hydrocarbons. Total PAH concentrations varied from 89 ng l-1 to 294 ng l-1 (mean 179 ng l-1). The most contaminated sites were the marina of San Giusto and the municipal harbor of Piran. Different evaluation indeces were applied to determine the origin of hydrocarbons. The prevailing origin of aliphatic hydrocarbons is petrogenic, with the significant contribution of the biogenic at some sites. The results presented indicate the fresh inputs of hydrocarbons, which are subject to intense degradation processes. The PAH group profile showed the predominance of 2-3 ring PAHs. PAHs were of mixed origin with more pronounced petrogenic origin, presumably due to oil spills from ships and boats. The presence of a relatively high content of perylene in seawater is an indication of its terrestrial input. According to the presented results and compared to results from different areas worldwide, the seawater in the Gulf of Trieste can still be considered slightly to moderately polluted with PAHs.

The MYTIAD project focused on the assessment of chemical contamination (metals, PAHs, PCBs and organochlorine pesticides) in the Adriatic coastal waters by active mussel watching. Its purpose was harmonising and standardising strategies and methodologies used to assess the contamination status of the Adriatic Sea, in the framework of the WFD, the MSFD and UNEP/MAP Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme. Data on metals pointed out some hotspots along the eastern and western Adriatic Sea coasts, with the highest values of total PAH concentration detected in Split, Trieste, and Taranto (Ionian Sea). PCB and endrin contamination was higher in the Adriatic Sea than in the western Mediterranean Sea. This is the first comprehensive overview of contamination in the Adriatic Sea with critical comparisons of related studies over the Mediterranean Sea. It provides a useful harmonised dataset to support a coordinated definition of baselines, targets and thresholds, and further management of chemical contamination.

In this study, abundance, distribution and composition of floating and seabed macro and micro litter in the Central Adriatic Sea were assessed. Floating macro litter observations were made. Floating and seabed micro litter were sampled with manta net and Van Veen grab, respectively. Micro litter particles visually found under the microscope were chemically analyzed with Fourier Transform Infrared microscope. Average calculated concentrations of floating macro (175 items/km2), floating micro (127 thousand particles/km2) and seabed micro litter (36 particles/100 g dry weight) show similar values as other published studies from the Mediterranean Sea. A statistically significant (p < 0.01) correlation between the floating micro and macro litter concentrations was found for the sites located in the channel waters. Disagreement between model and observations revealed gaps in our knowledge concerning the sea circulation and litter sources. Simultaneous samplings and observations of marine litter in different marine compartments proved possible, efficient and informative.

Ketoprofen, 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)-propionic acid, a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is considered as an important water pollutant. Kinetics and mechanism of its photolytic transformation in aqueous solutions was studied experimentally and partial reaction steps were modelled by means of quantum chemistry methods. While the rate of ketoprofen photolysis was not significantly affected by its acid-base equilibrium, a marked influence of pH on the subsequent degradation reactions was observed. At pH 1.3, two oxygenated primary products were identified, that underwent fast photolysis. Deprotonated form of ketoprofen was transformed preferentially to ethylbenzophenone and further degradation proceeded substantially slower. Oxygen participated on photolytic processes both as a reactant and the triplet state quencher. The active involvement of water molecules in the reaction mechanism was investigated by comparative experiments in acetonitrile. The Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic) is one of the most urbanized and industrialized areas in the northern Adriatic, with intense maritime traffic experienced at multiple ports. The impact of maritime traffic on contamination by hydrocarbons in this area was assessed. Concentrations of hydrocarbons were higher near the expected contamination sources and still elevated in the adjacent offshore areas. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were mainly of petrogenic origin, with some contribution of biogenic origin. A continuous contamination by aliphatic hydrocarbons and degradation processes were hypothesized. Concentrations of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were generally greater near the contamination sources. Compared to the prevailing pyrolytic origin, the petrogenic PAH origin seemed to be less important, but not negligible. Results revealed that intensive maritime traffic is a probable source of contamination by hydrocarbons in the investigated area, which is largely limited to areas near the contamination sources.

In order to assess the role of urea in the Gulf of Trieste, oceanographic data collected from 2002 to 2011 were analyzed together with ancillary ambient information and compared to past studies. The recent levels of urea found in these coastal waters (median = 1.1 µM N, maximum value = 19.7 µM N) are often high and similar to those reported in the early 1980s. A preliminary estimate of the external inputs indicated that this enrichment in urea is mainly due to emissions from urban sewage systems, whereas the contributions of rivers and atmospheric deposition are scarce. As a consequence, urea appears to be a reliable tracer of the diffusion of wastewaters in the coastal marine environment, more specific and sensitive than other nutrients, with a behavior that also reflects the technology of the treatment plants. The stability of urea levels over the last three decades suggests that the upgrade of wastewater treatment technologies was probably balanced by the concomitant increase of the anthropogenic pressure in the area (477,000 to 1,300,000 inhabitant equivalent). Budget estimates on the gulf-wide scale indicate that urea (177-530 t N) is not negligible compared to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (409-919 t N) and that it can constitute up to 56% of the nitrogen available for plankton growth. A large accumulation of urea can occur during summer periods characterized by stable weather conditions and weak circulation, whereas a biologically mediated degradation to ammonium is observed in autumn in concomitance to a strong shift of the marine ecosystem toward heterotrophic conditions. These processes, together with a potential competition between phytoplankton and bacteria for the utilization of this nitrogen form, suggest that the biogeochemical role of urea should be better investigated in mid-latitude coastal zones subjected to highly variable ambient conditions and to overloads of this compound.

The distribution and sources of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in sediments at seven sites around the Slovenian coastal area. The potential toxicological significance was also assessed using biological thresholds. The results of the analyses showed higher concentrations of hydrocarbons in the Port of Koper and in the Marina of Portoroz. The influence of pollution was also evident in rather higher concentrations of hydrocarbons in the surrounding area in the Bays of Koper and Piran. Concentrations of hydrocarbons decrease toward the central part of the Gulf of Trieste. The major component of the aliphatic fraction was the unresolved complex mixture. Concentrations of the total resolved aliphatic hydrocarbons were in a range from 689 to 3,164 ng g(-1). Concentrations of the total PAHs were between 330 and 1,173 ng g(-1). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are primarily of pyrolytic origin with some smaller contributions of the petrogenic, while the aliphatic are mostly of petrogenic origin with significant amounts of biogenic derived compounds of terrestrial and marine origin. Strong evidence of the diagenetic origin of perylene in the investigated area was also found. Quite a good linear relationship between PAH concentration and TOC and between aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations and TOC was observed. The principal component analysis showed differences between the nearshore and offshore sites. In general, the investigated area is moderately contaminated by hydrocarbons. Concentrations of PAHs, hydrocarbons of high concern, are below the levels (effects range low and the effects range median) associated with adverse biological effects.

Hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity was measured in black gobies (Gobius niger) collected from seven sampling sites along the Slovenian coast during spawning and non-spawning periods. Sediments from the same sites were tested for their toxicity and for total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content. EROD activity was significantly higher during the non-spawning period in winter than during the spawning period in spring and generally correlated well with increased total PAH content in sediments and with sediment toxicity. An 11-fold increase of EROD activity was induced 48h after injecting 10µgg(-1) weight of benzo(a)pyrene into black gobies. On the basis of these results and of its ecological characteristics, the black goby is proposed as a suitable candidate for future biomonitoring programmes.
