RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of low dose ionizing radiation exposure on thiol/disulfide homeostasis and ischemia modified albumin levels. The secondary objective is to compare thiol/disulfide homeostasis and ischemia modified albumin levels among the personnel exposed to low dose ionizing radiation in anesthesia application areas, in and out of the Operation room. METHODS: The study included a total of 90 volunteers aged between 18 and 65 years old, with 45 personnel working in a setting with potential for radiation exposure (Exposed Group) and 45 personnel in a setting without radiation exposure (Control Group). Their native thiol, total thiol, disulphide, albumine and IMA levels were measured. Exposed group included personnel who were exposed to radiation outside the operating room - Operation room (-) Group and inside the Operating room - Operation room (+) Group. RESULTS: Albumin, native and total thiol levels were significantly lower in the participants exposed to radiation in the anesthesia application area, no statistically significant difference was found in terms of disulfide and ischemia modified albumin levels. In the Operation room (-) group exposed to radiation, native thiol and total thiol values were significantly lower compared to the Operation room (+) groups. CONCLUSION: Awareness of being in danger of oxidative stress should be established in personnel exposed to radiation in the anesthesia application area following low dose ionizing radiation exposure, and the necessary measures should be taken.

Resumo Justificativa: O objetivo principal do estudo foi investigar o efeito de exposição à radiação ionizante de baixa dose nos níveis de homeostase tiol/dissulfeto e de albumina modificada por isquemia. O objetivo secundário foi comparar os níveis de homeostase tiol/dissulfeto e albumina modificada por isquemia entre indivíduos expostos à radiação ionizante de baixa dose nas áreas de procedimentos anestésicos, dentro e fora da sala de cirurgia. Método: O estudo incluiu um total de 90 voluntários com idades entre 18 e 65 anos, 45 profissionais que trabalhavam em ambiente de exposição potencial a radiação (Grupo Exposto) e 45 profissionais que trabalhavam em ambiente sem exposição à radiação (Grupo Controle). Foram medidos os níveis de tiol nativo, tiol total, dissulfeto, albumina e albumina modificada por isquemia. O Grupo Exposto era constituído por profissionais expostos a radiação fora da sala de cirurgia - Grupo sala de cirurgia (-) e na sala de cirurgia - Grupo sala de cirurgia (+). Resultados: Os níveis de albumina, tiol nativo e total foram significantemente mais baixos nos participantes expostos à radiação em área de realização de anestesia, e nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significante foi encontrada para os níveis de dissulfeto e albumina modificada por isquemia. No Grupo exposto sala de cirurgia (-), os valores de tiol nativo e tiol total foram significantemente mais baixos quando comparados ao Grupo sala de cirurgia (+). Conclusões: Os profissionais expostos à radiação em área de realização de anestesia devem ser conscientizados quanto ao perigo do estresse oxidativo após exposição à radiação ionizante de baixa dose e medidas cabíveis devem ser instituídas.

BACKGROUND:: Lateral epicondylitis is one of the most common causes of elbow pain. It is generally observed in people between the ages of 40 and 50 years, and the dominant extremity is more frequently affected. Various noninvasive methods are frequently used; however, studies investigating the effectiveness of the orthoses are limited and with controversial outcomes. OBJECTIVE:: To investigate the effectiveness of a hand-wrist resting orthosis and an epicondylitis bandage in lateral epicondylitis. STUDY DESIGN:: Randomized controlled trial. METHODS:: In total, 82 patients diagnosed with unilateral lateral epicondylitis were enrolled into the study. Hand-wrist resting orthosis was applied to 45 patients and epicondylitis bandage was applied to 41 patients. Patients were evaluated before treatment and at 6 weeks after treatment with a Visual Analogue Scale; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire; the Short Form 36; and a determination of hand grasping force. RESULTS:: Both groups were similar in terms of age, body mass index, gender, frequency of lateral epicondylitis on the dominant side, dominant extremity, and duration of complaints ( p > 0.05). A statistically significant recovery was detected in both groups between the pre-therapy values and the values at the sixth week in terms of Visual Analogue Scale scores; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnarie scores; hand grasping forces; and the Short Form 36 mental and physical component scores ( p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences detected between the two therapy methods before the therapy and at the sixth week of treatment in all parameter values ( p > 0.05). CONCLUSION:: Our results suggest that both epicondylitis bandage and hand-wrist resting orthosis are effective treatment options for lateral epicondylitis-induced pain, functional status, muscle strength, and quality of life. Furthermore, neither treatment option was superior to the other. Large, randomized studies are necessary for more clear statements. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Epicondylitis bandage and hand-wrist resting orthosis are equally effective treatment options for lateral epicondylitis-induced pain, functional status, muscle strength, and quality of life.

RESUMEN

Hydatid cyst is an endemically seen parasitic disease and caused by the larval form of Echinococcus parasites. The disease is mostly seen in liver and lung, and the other involvement is rarely seen. Head and neck involvement is extremely rarely seen and its frequency in the literature is reported as less than 1%. It is usually asymptomatic and the symptoms are related to the compression to the adjacent structures. In this paper, the authors report a patient of hydatid cyst localized in the posterior cervical region.

RESUMEN

Brown tumor, which is seen in the context of hyperparathyroidism, is defined as a uremic bone disease characterized by increased osteoclastic activity and fibroblastic proliferation in the involved bone. In chronic renal failure, there is an excessive parathyroid hormone secretion due to hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and vitamin D deficiency. Brown tumor of the femur, facial bones, mandible, sternum, ribs, and pelvis are rare, whereas, it rarely involves sacrum. Here, we presented a brown tumor of the sacrum that developed secondary to parathyroid hyperplasia in a patient receiving hemodialysis.
