RESUMEN

The control of the duration of the dormancy phase is a significant challenge in the potato industry and for seed producers. However, the proteome landscape involved in the regulation of the length of the dormancy period over potato cultivars remains largely unexplored. In this study, we performed for the first time a comparative proteome profiling of potato cultivars with differential duration of tuber dormancy. More specifically, the proteome profiling of Agata, Kennebec and Agria commercial potato varieties with short, medium and medium-long dormancy, respectively, was assessed at the endodormancy stage using high-resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) coupled to reversed-phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-TripleTOF MS/MS). A total of 11 proteins/isoforms with statistically significant differential abundance among cultivars were detected on 2-DE gels and confidently identified by LC-TripleTOF MS/MS. Identified proteins have known functions related to tuber development, sprouting and the oxylipins biosynthesis pathway. Fructokinase, a mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier, catalase isozyme 2 and heat shock 70 kDa were the proteins with the strongest response to dormancy variations. To the best of our knowledge, this study reports the first candidate proteins underlying variable dormancy length in potato cultivars.

RESUMEN

Artificial smokes focusing on macroscopic or fluid properties of smoke have been available for a long time. This paper presents a simple method to generate fully customizable smoke-like atmospheres at microscopic scale (i.e. considering their constituent particles as discrete elements) using a different approach. Synthetic, reproducible media can be generated combining monodisperse microspheres with known geometrical and optical properties conveniently parameterized. The method is presented as a proof-of-concept, highlighting the design decisions along with their implications. Practical issues such as aerosol nebulization, particle carrier selection or the features of the medium chamber where the smoke-like atmosphere is to be tested are analyzed. A comparison between methanol and ethanol as carriers for polystyrene microsphere nebulization is also made. The method could be the seed for the obtention of standard reference media for calibration or standardized characterization of not only smoke detectors and exhaust smoke sensors but also other instruments relying on optical properties of dispersive media (dust in PV panels, public lighting, etc.).

RESUMEN

This paper presents a CMOS temperature sensor based on the thermal dependencies of the leakage currents targeting the 65 nm node. To compensate for the effect of process fluctuations, the proposed sensor realizes the ratio of two measures of the time it takes a capacitor to discharge through a transistor in the subthreshold regime. Furthermore, a novel charging mechanism for the capacitor is proposed to further increase the robustness against fabrication variability. The sensor, including digitization and interfacing, occupies 0.0016 mm² and has an energy consumption of 47.7-633 pJ per sample. The resolution of the sensor is 0.28 °C, and the 3σ inaccuracy over the range 40-110 °C is 1.17 °C.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: We present an unusual variant of type IV thoracoabdominal aneurysm with inflammatory changes in part of the aortic wall. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 1990 and December 2000, 5 male patients (mean age, 68 years) with inflammatory aneurysms of 29 with type IV thoracoabdominal aneurysms (17.2%) underwent surgery. All five had arterial hypertension. The diagnosis of inflammatory aneurysm was made on the basis of clinical suspicion supported by characteristic features on CT scans. Endoaneurysmorraphy was performed in all cases; a tube graft was inserted in three cases, and bifurcation was performed in 2. The macroscopic appearance of periaortic fibrosis was detected at the infrarrenal portion of the aneurysm in the 5 patients, but no retroperitoneal fibrosis was found at the level of the distal thoracic aorta in any case. RESULTS: There was no operative mortality. Paraparesis was not detected in any patient. One patient had acute kidney failure, and another required an extended stay in the intensive care unit because of respiratory insufficiency. Pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of inflammatory aneurysm in all 5 patients, with characteristic adventitial thickening caused by lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and fibrosis around the ganglionic and nerve structures. CONCLUSIONS: Type IV thoracoabdominal aneurysm with inflammatory changes can be treated at surgery with a retroperitoneal approach. Usually the fibrotic response is confined to the infrarenal portion of the aneurysm.
