RESUMEN

We demonstrate a compact, robust, and stable terahertz source based on a novel two section digital distributed feedback laser diode and plasmonic photomixer. Terahertz wave generation is achieved through difference frequency generation by pumping the plasmonic photomixer with two output optical beams of the two section digital distributed feedback laser diode. The laser is designed to offer an adjustable terahertz frequency difference between the emitted wavelengths by varying the applied currents to the laser sections. The plasmonic photomixer is comprised of an ultrafast photoconductor with plasmonic contact electrodes integrated with a logarithmic spiral antenna. We demonstrate terahertz wave generation with 0.15-3 THz frequency tunability, 2 MHz linewidth, and less than 5 MHz frequency stability over 1 minute, at useful power levels for practical imaging and sensing applications.

RESUMEN

Next generation optical access networks will require low cost lasers in conjunction with network flexibility and higher data rates. This work presents the direct modulation of a low cost tuneable slotted Fabry-Pérot laser (tuneable over 14 nm) with AM-OFDM. Characteristics of this dual section laser are presented and transmission of 10 Gb/s over 50 km is achieved with this device.

RESUMEN

Mode locking features of single section quantum dash based lasers are investigated. Particular interest is given to the static spectral phase profile determining the shape of the mode locked pulses. The phase profile dependence on cavity length and injection current is experimentally evaluated, demonstrating the possibility of efficiently using the wide spectral bandwidth exhibited by these quantum dash structures for the generation of high peak power sub-picosecond pulses with low radio frequency linewidths.

RESUMEN

We present a linear self-referenced measurement of the spectral amplitude and phase of a free-running quantum-dash modelocked laser diode. The technique is suitable for measuring optical signals with repetition rates up to 100 GHz. In contrast to many other linear techniques it requires no external electronic clock synchronized to the signal under test. Using this method we are able to compensate for the intracavity dispersion of the diode to demonstrate 500 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 39.8 GHz. We also use the technique to characterize the dependence of the diode's intracavity dispersion on the applied current.

RESUMEN

Performance improvement of a directly modulated 10 Gb/s OFDM system by optical injection of monolithically integrated lasers is shown experimentally over differing fibre lengths. The modulation and optical injection is performed using monolithically integrated Discrete Mode lasers. It is shown that optical injection with this device reduces third order inter-modulation distortion by up to 10dB and this results in an improvement in system performance from above a forward error correction BER threshold of 1 × 10(-3) to significantly below it.

RESUMEN

We present a heterodyne measurement of the spectral amplitude and phase of periodic optical signals. In contrast to previous techniques this measurement requires no optical modulation of either the signal or the local oscillator, places much relaxed tunability requirements on the optical local oscillator, and requires no electronic clock to be passed to the receiver. We present measurements of the spectral amplitude and phase of 20 GHz 33% return-to-zero, and 66% carrier-suppressed return-to-zero optical signals, as well as a passively modelocked optical source with in excess of 100 modes.

RESUMEN

Two polarization-independent Michelson fiber interferometers with different optical delays were used to measure the in-band OSNR of an optical signal from 5 to 30 dB within an accuracy of 0.5 dB. Using an expansion of the amplitude autocorrelation function of the signal around zero delay, it was possible to perform measurements without any prior knowledge of the signal. The system is shown to be immune to the effects of modulation frequency (up to 10G), partially and fully polarized noise, chromatic dispersion and poorly biased modulators.

RESUMEN

In this paper, the polarization response of a GaAs based two-photon absorption microcavity photodetector has been studied. The deviation in the dependence of the detector response from that of bulk GaAs is shown to be due to the birefringence of the cavity. A theoretical model based on the convolution of the cavity birefringence and the polarization dependence of two-photon absorption in GaAs is described and shown to match the measured polarization dependence of the microcavity detector very well.

As channels rates in optical networks are expected to exceed 100 Gb/s in the near future, new optical techniques for clock recovery will have to be developed for optical regeneration. This paper describes an optical clock recovery method based on a mode-locked laser diode. Experimental results show that a 42 GHz high quality optical clock can be retrieved from a 170 Gb/s OTDM data signal. Chirp transfer between the incident signal and the recovered clock signal is investigated using the SHG-FROG method. Results demonstrate that this clock recovery technique is invariant to input dispersion varying between +/-75 ps/nm, making it ideal for use in 3R regenerators.

We show the importance of achieving an acceptable level of output side-mode-suppression ratio when generating pulses by using the self-seeded gain-switched technique. Experiments carried out on such pulses exhibiting poor side-mode-suppression ratios that are subsequently filtered to improve the latter demonstrate that they possess an associated level of noise. This buildup of noise with a decreasing inherent side-mode-suppression ratio is noted regardless of the improved output-filtered side-mode-suppression ratio of 35 dB that is maintained. The degradation of the signal is due to the mode partition effect and may render these pulses unsuitable for use in high-speed optical communications systems.

RESUMEN

Cross-phase modulation in optical fibers has been used for complete characterization of ultrashort pulses by a modified frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) measurement technique. This technique has been used for characterization of picosecond pulses at 1.5mum with energy as low as 24 pJ, and the results are in excellent agreement with second-harmonic generation (SHG)-FROG characterization. The use of an optical waveguide gives measurement sensitivity comparable with that of SHG-FROG but without any temporal ambiguity in the retrieved pulse.

RESUMEN

The technique of frequency-resolved optical gating is used to characterize the intensity and the phase of picosecond pulses after propagation through 700 m of fiber at close to the zero-dispersion wavelength. Using the frequency-resolved optical gating technique, we directly measure the severe temporal distortion resulting from the interplay between self-phase modulation and higher-order dispersion in this regime. The measured intensity and phase of the pulses after propagation are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of numerical simulations with the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
