RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate quality of life (QoL) and anxiety level in Turkish children with anorectal malformation as well as the anxiety level of their mothers and the support group effects on anxiety. METHODS: A total of 87 children and their parents were included. They were grouped according to children's age: <8 years (group 1), 8-12 years (group 2) and >12 years (group 3). The anxiety of all mothers and of children in group 3 was assessed by Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Index-2. The QoL of children in groups 2 and 3 was evaluated with the Ped-QL 4.0 test by self-report and proxy report. The QoL results in groups 2 and 3 were compared with age-matched controls. RESULTS: Mothers in groups 1 and 3 were more anxious than were those in group 2. Adolescents in group 3 had poorer QoL compared with controls by self- and proxy reports. A significant difference was observed in QoL between the children who did and those who did not soil. The anxiety level was significantly lower in parents who attended more than one meeting. CONCLUSIONS: High anxiety and poor QoL levels in adolescence may have been related to the growing importance of body image. The higher anxiety levels of mothers in group 1 could be explained by an encounter with a baby who was different from the imagined baby and the newness of illness. QoL may have been perceived as being worse than what it was for psychological reasons.

RESUMEN

Familial Wilms tumor is a rare entity that accounts for only 1-2% of all Wilms tumor cases, with an earlier age of onset and an increased frequency of bilateral tumors. Teratoid Wilms tumor is a variant of nephroblastoma with a predominance of heterologous tissues comprising more than 50% of the tumor volume. Wilms tumor does not usually secrete any specific tumor marker and all teratoid Wilms tumor cases previously reported were sporadic non-secreting neoplasms. Here we describe an infant with familial synchronous bilateral teratoid Wilms tumor whose serum alpha-fetoprotein level was elevated. To our knowledge, this extremely rare type of case is reported for the first time in the literature.

RESUMEN

It is not known whether there is an impairment in vas deferens motility after unilateral testicular torsion/detorsion. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether the electrical field stimulation (EFS)-evoked biphasic contractions are altered in ipsilateral and contralateral rat vasa deferentia obtained from animals exposed to the unilateral testicular torsion/detorsion procedure. We also evaluated the effects of melatonin (MLT), which is a strong antioxidant, on these contractile responses. Rats were subjected to torsion of the left testis for 2 h and then detorsion was performed. Contractility studies were carried out 2 h or 24 h after detorsion. Vas deferens strips were prepared from both the ipsilateral and the contralateral site 2 h or 24 h after the detorsion procedure to record EFS-evoked biphasic twitch responses. The same experimental protocol was repeated for the MLT-treated rats. Both phases of EFS-evoked contractions were decreased after torsion/detorsion in the ipsilateral vas deferens. MLT treatment increased torsion/detorsion-induced reduction of both phases of contractions after 2 h and 24 h. In the contralateral vas deferens, the first phase of EFS-evoked contractions was not changed, while the second phase of contractions was diminished 2 h and 24 h after detorsion. Although MLT decreased the second phase of contractions 2 h and 24 h after detorsion, it reduced the first phase of contractions only 2 h after detorsion. These results suggest that MLT produces an inhibition on EFS-evoked biphasic twitch responses in the ipsilateral and contralateral rat vasa deferentia following unilateral testicular torsion/detorsion in the rat.

RESUMEN

Solitary neurofibroma unassociated with neurofibromatosis type I (NFI) arising within the scrotum is an extremely rare benign tumor. There are 8 cases reported in the literature with only 1 that occurred in childhood. In the current report the authors describe an additional adolescent patient, the second case encountered in childhood and the ninth case reported in the literature, together with a review of the related articles.
