OBJECTIVE: Assess femorotibial features in foals with and without medial femoral condyle (MFC) subchondral radiolucencies (SR+ and SR-). METHODS: 3 independent, sequential radiographic studies were performed. Study 1 retrospectively measured femorotibial morphological parameters in repository radiographs (SR- and SR+). Study 2 qualitatively compared drawings of intercondylar notch shape in postmortem radiographs (SR-). Study 3 prospectively measured femorotibial parameters in 1-month-old foals (SR-). In studies 1 and 3, 13 morphologic parameters were measured. Limb directional asymmetry was assessed in 2 age groups (< 7 or ≥ 7 months). RESULTS: Study 1 (SR- group; n = 183 radiographs) showed increased femoral measurements with maturation, except the distal femoral intercondylar notch width (FINwal), which decreased. In contrast, in SR+ stifles (53 radiographs), 3 femoral parameters (MFC width [MFCwpf], MFC height, or FINwal) showed no changes. Tibial plateau width alone increased with maturation in both groups. Interobserver reliability was good to excellent. Study 2 (n = 53 radiographs) confirmed a distal FINw decrease in SR- foals. In study 1, left SR- stifles in greater than or equal to 7-month-old fillies had significantly larger femoral bicondylar width and FINw, while right SR+ stifles in fillies greater than or equal to 7 months had a significantly larger MFCw. In study 3 of 1-month-old foals (n = 94 SR- radiographs), the MFCw, femoral condyle bicondylar width, and lateral femoral condyle height were all greater on the left, whereas the intercondylar intereminence space width was larger on the right. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In SR+ stifles, the distal femur exhibited divergent maturation, indicating a wider MFC in the right stifle in older foals. As SR lesions are more common on the right, this suggests a potential association with MFC morphology.

BACKGROUND: Stifle osteoarthritis (OA) lesions are most common in the medial femorotibial (MFT) compartment. Their characterisation and mapping will inform equine veterinarians towards an accurate diagnosis of OA. OBJECTIVES: Investigate and map micro-CT (µCT) changes in the hyaline articular cartilage (HAC) in the medial femoral condyle (MFC) and medial tibial plateau (MTP). STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo cadaveric. METHODS: Stifles (n = 7 OA and 17 control [CO]) were retrieved from a tissue bank. The MFC and MFT were imaged with µCT. Regions of interest (ROIs) were cranial (MFCcr; MTPcr) and caudal (MFCca; MTPca) sites. In each ROI, µCT images were scored for HAC fibrillation, surface mineralisation and for the presence of high-density mineralised protrusions (HDMP). The lesions were mapped, and site-matched histology was performed. RESULTS: The microstructure of healthy and abnormal HAC was discernible on µCT images and confirmed with histology. HAC fibrillation was more prevalent (p = 0.019) in the MFCcr of the OA group (n = 7/7, 100%) when compared with the CO group (n = 7/17, 41%). Score 1 HAC surface mineralisation was more prevalent (p = 0.038) in the OA MFCca (n = 4/7, 57%) when compared with the CO group (n = 2/17, 12%). HDMP were heterogenous and hyperdense mineralised material protruding into the HAC and were more frequent (p = 0.033) in MFCs (n = 12/24, 50%) compared with MTPs (n = 5/24, 20%). Score 3 HDMPs were also more prevalent (p = 0.003) in the MFCcr (n = 7/24, 29%) compared with MFCca (n = 0/24, 0%) and in MFCs (n = 7/24, 29%) compared with MTPs (n = 3/24, 12.5%) (p = 0.046). MAIN LIMITATIONS: Clinical history was not available for all specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Equine HDMP and HAC surface mineralisation are imaged for the first time in the MFT joint. HAC fibrillation and erosion and HDMP are more frequent in the cranial aspect of the MFC. µCT images of OA in equine stifle joints provide a novel perspective of lesions and improve understanding of OA.

BACKGROUND: Reducing inhaled dust particles improves lung function in horses with severe asthma. Soaked hay is commonly used by owners, but its efficacy in improving lung function and inflammation has not been documented. OBJECTIVES: To measure the effects of soaked hay and alfalfa pellets in horses with severe asthma. ANIMALS: Ten adult horses with severe asthma from a research colony. METHODS: Prospective controlled trial. Horses in clinical exacerbation were housed indoors and allocated to be fed either soaked hay (n = 5) or alfalfa pellets (n = 5) for 6 weeks. Soaked hay was immersed for 45 minutes and dried out hay was discarded between meals. Pulmonary function and clinical scores were measured before and after 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Tracheal mucus scores and bronchoalveolar lavages were performed before and after 6 weeks. Lung function was analyzed with a linear mixed model using log-transformed data. RESULTS: Lung resistance decreased from (median (range)) 2.47 (1.54-3.95) to 1.59 (0.52-2.10) cmH2 O/L/s in the pellets group and from 1.89 (1.2-3.54) to 0.61 (0.42-2.08) cmH2 O/L/s in the soaked hay group over the 6-week period for an average difference of 1.06 cmH2 O/L/s for pellets (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.09-2.04, P = .03, not significant after correction) and 1.31 cmH2 O/L/s for soaked hay (95% CI: -0.23 to 2.85, P < .001, significant). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Soaked hay can control airway obstruction in horses with severe asthma. The strict protocol for soaking and discarding dried-out hay in this study could however be considered too great of an inconvenience by owners.

Background: In dogs, corticosteroid administration is known to decrease adrenal gland height when measured ultrasonographically. However, comparable information is lacking in cats. Objectives: i) Validate that the adrenal height of our control population without corticosteroid administration was similar to previous data, ii) determine effects of dose and duration of oral corticosteroid therapy on adrenal height, and iii) determine an adrenal size threshold to differentiate cats receiving corticosteroids or not. Animals and procedures: Adult cats (N = 308) that received abdominal ultrasonographic examination(s) were retrospectively recruited and allocated into 2 groups: those with and without oral corticosteroid use. Cats receiving corticosteroids were subdivided into 6 subgroups by dose (supraphysiologic, anti-inflammatory, or immunosuppressive) and duration of therapy (≤ 1 mo or > 1 mo). Results: Adrenal height in cats without corticosteroid therapy was comparable to previous studies. An anti-inflammatory corticosteroid dose for > 1 mo caused a 21.4% decrease in adrenal height (mean difference of 0.8 mm; P = 0.009). However, no difference in adrenal height was noted in the other subgroups (P > 0.21), and no useful adrenal height threshold was established. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Feline iatrogenic adrenal atrophy may be difficult to establish with ultrasonography, as only cats receiving anti-inflammatory corticosteroid doses for > 1 mo had a modest (< 1 mm) decrease in adrenal height.


L'atrophie iatrogène des surrénales consécutive à une corticothérapie orale n'est pas identifiée de manière fiable par échographie chez le chat. Contexte: Chez le chien, l'administration de corticostéroïdes est connue pour diminuer la taille des glandes surrénales lorsqu'elle est mesurée par échographie. Cependant, des informations comparables manquent chez les chats. Objectifs: i) Valider que la taille des surrénales de notre population témoin sans administration de corticostéroïdes était similaire aux données précédentes, ii) déterminer les effets de la dose et de la durée de la corticothérapie orale sur la taille des surrénales, et iii) déterminer un seuil de taille des surrénales pour différencier les chats recevant des corticostéroïdes ou pas. Animaux et procédures: Des chats adultes (N = 308) qui ont subi un ou plusieurs examens échographiques abdominaux ont été recrutés rétrospectivement et répartis en 2 groupes : ceux avec et sans corticothérapie orale. Les chats recevant des corticostéroïdes ont été subdivisés en 6 sous-groupes selon la dose (supraphysiologique, anti-inflammatoire ou immunosuppresseur) et la durée du traitement (≤ 1 mois ou > 1 mois). Résultats: La taille des surrénales chez les chats sans corticothérapie était comparable à celle des études précédentes. Une dose de corticoïdes anti-inflammatoires pendant > 1 mois a entraîné une diminution de 21,4 % de la taille des surrénales (différence moyenne de 0,8 mm; P = 0,009). Cependant, aucune différence de taille surrénalienne n'a été notée dans les autres sous-groupes (P > 0,21) et aucun seuil de taille surrénalienne utile n'a été établi. Conclusion et pertinence clinique: L'atrophie surrénalienne iatrogène féline peut être difficile à établir par échographie, car seuls les chats recevant des doses de corticostéroïdes anti-inflammatoires pendant > 1 mois ont présenté une diminution modeste (< 1 mm) de la taille des surrénales.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Group living has long been viewed as an adaptation to reduce predation risk. Earlier comparative analyses provided support for the hypothesis but typically ignored variation in group size at the local scale and included proxies of predation risk rather than more direct estimates. Here, we related variation in group size at the scale of a study site in various species with the diversity and abundance of local predators. If larger groups provide protection against predators, we expected larger groups to evolve in species facing locally more diverse and abundant predators. We examined this hypothesis in one avian family, the Paridae, which are small arboreal birds that include some of the better studied species in ecology. From the literature, we gathered 275 flock size estimates from 34 species. In a phylogenetic framework and controlling for the potential confounding effect of latitude, we found that flock size increased with predation risk but only in flocks that included more than one species. We suggest that competition sets an upper limit to the size of flocks including conspecifics only. Joining flocks with other species, thus, allows individuals to increase flock size in response to higher predation risk without a substantial increase in competition. Overall, our results based on more direct estimates of predation risk provide further comparative evidence for an association between predation and the evolution of flocking in birds.

Sentinels can detect predators and rivals early by monitoring their surroundings from vantage points. Multiple sentinels in a group may reduce the perceived predation risk by diluting the risk and increasing collective detection, especially if sentinels monitor different areas at the same time. We investigated sentinel behavior in groups of the Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma caerulescens). Sentinels in this species turn their heads frequently to monitor different areas for threats. As predicted, we found that sentinels turned their heads less frequently in the presence of other sentinels. Multiple sentinels, however, tended to gaze in the same direction at the same time more often than predicted by chance alone. Gaze synchronization reduces the efficiency of collective detection by reducing visual coverage at any one time at the group level. Despite the benefits of the presence of other sentinels, our results highlight the limits to collective detection when multiple individuals are vigilant at the same time.

Trazodone is a dose-dependent serotonin antagonist and agonist used to treat anxiety-related conditions. Trauma has been identified as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in several nondomestic ruminant species and can be exacerbated by stress. In a recent study in domestic goats (Capra aegagrus hircus), trazodone reduced activity levels without adverse effects. Trazodone could allow for safer capture and handling in nondomestic ruminant species. The objectives of this study were to identify a dose of trazodone that decreases activity levels in captive blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and to evaluate its safety and its effects on serum cortisol levels following a routine veterinary procedure. A pilot study using ethograms identified a group fed 15 mg/kg oral dose of trazodone as effective to reduce activity levels. Over 6 h, this dose resulted in a 111% increase in time spent sleeping or resting (P = 0.0003), a 41% increase in time spent lying down (P = 0.0016), a 64% reduction in time spent moving (P= 0.005), and a 65% reduction in time spent being vigilant (P= 0.026). Systemic absorption of trazodone was identified when plasma concentrations were measured after 2 h (95 ± 48 µg/L). Serum cortisol levels during a routine venipuncture event were not significantly different following trazodone administration (P > 0.05). Mild hyporexia was the only adverse effect noted at 15 mg/kg and was absent at a 12 mg/kg dose. Trazodone appears safe and promising to decrease activity in blue wildebeest and might thus have a positive effect on nondomestic ruminant welfare and the safety of veterinary procedures.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of equine lameness. Cannabinoid (CB) receptors are now considered to be promising therapeutic targets in human rheumatology for pain and inflammation, however, little is known about the equine endocannabinoid system. OBJECTIVES: The primary goal was to assess the presence and expression pattern of CB1 and CB2 in the synovium of healthy joints. A secondary goal was to explore the relationship between the CB expression, degree of synovitis and OA pathology. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo experimental study. METHODS: Metacarpophalangeal joints (n = 25) from a tissue bank were studied. The joints were dissected, and the articular cartilage lesions were scored. Synovial membrane specimens (n = 45) were harvested, fixed and the degree of synovitis was graded on histological sections. Colocalised synovial sections were also immunostained with antibodies to CB1 and CB2. Five regions of interest were randomly selected from digital images of manually segmented synovial intima and scored blindly for positive cellular immunoreactive staining by two independent observers. Interobserver agreement was calculated with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Relationships between CB1 and CB2 immunoreactive scores and synovitis or joint OA grade were explored with mixed linear models. RESULTS: CB1 was expressed in synovial intimal cells in all specimens studied whereas CB2 expression was identified in 94%. Both receptors were also expressed in the subintimal blood vessel walls. ICCs were 84.6% (CB1) and 92.9% (CB2) for the immunoreactivity scores. Both CB1 and CB2 expression were significantly upregulated (p = 0.04 and p = 0.03, respectively) with increasing degree of synovitis. Conversely, CB1 expression significantly decreased (p = 0.03) with increasing severity of OA. MAIN LIMITATIONS: The type of synovial cell expressing CB1 or CB2 was not investigated. CONCLUSION: Equine synovial intimal cells constitutively express both CB1 and CB2 receptors that are upregulated with synovitis and may have a role in joint pain. They are potential targets for therapy with cannabinoid molecules or their derivatives.

BACKGROUND: Focal bone microcracks with osteoclast recruitment and bone lysis, may reduce fracture resistance in racehorses. As current imaging does not detect all horses at risk for fracture, the discovery of novel serum biomarkers of bone resorption or osteoclast activity could potentially address this unmet clinical need. The biology of equine osteoclasts on their natural substrate, equine bone, has never been studied in vitro and may permit identification of specific biomarkers of their activity. OBJECTIVES: (1) Establish osteoclast cultures on equine bone, (2) Measure biomarkers (tartrate resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b [TRACP-5b] and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen [CTX-I]) in vitro and (3) Study the effects of inflammation. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro experiments. METHODS: Haematopoietic stem cells, from five equine sternal bone marrow aspirates, were differentiated into osteoclasts and cultured either alone or on equine bone slices, with or without a pro-inflammatory stimulus (IL-1ß or LPS). CTX-I and TRACP-5b were immunoassayed in the media. Osteoclast numbers and bone resorption area were assessed. RESULTS: TRACP-5b increased over time in osteoclast cultures without bone (p < 0.0001) and correlated with osteoclast number (r = 0.63, p < 0.001). CTX-I and TRACP-5b increased with time for cultures with bone (p = 0.002; p = 0.02 respectively), correlated with each other (r = 0.64, p < 0.002) and correlated with bone resorption (r = 0.85, p < 0.001; r = 0.82, p < 0.001 respectively). Inflammation had no measurable effects. MAIN LIMITATIONS: Specimen numbers limited. CONCLUSIONS: Equine osteoclasts were successfully cultured on equine bone slices and their bone resorption quantified. TRACP-5b was shown to be a biomarker of equine osteoclast number and bone resorption for the first time; CTX-I was also confirmed to be a biomarker of equine bone resorption in vitro. This robust equine specific in vitro assay will help the study of osteoclast biology.

Vigilance is important for early detection of threats. Previous studies have focused on the allocation of time to vigilance but neglected how animals monitor their surroundings during vigilance. Where animals look and how long each look lasts can affect the quality of visual monitoring and thus the ability to detect threats during vigilance. We examined visual monitoring strategies in the Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens), a cooperative breeder with sentinel behaviour. Sentinels in this species make head turns from vantage points to detect the arrival of predators and intruding neighbours. We found that sentinels initiated head turns at regular intervals and also returned their gaze to areas previously monitored at regular intervals, which is predicted when predators and intruders rely on surprise rather than stealth to approach. Sentinels made head turns in several directions, but often more frequently on one side of the body than the other, which was not predicted for regular vigilance. Average look duration during sentinel bouts was shorter in smaller groups and in juveniles. We argue that shorter looks are beneficial to increase visual coverage in more threatening situations. Our study highlights how visual monitoring strategies during vigilance reflect the risk posed by predators and intruders.

Published studies describing the effects of bilateral radiographic projections on the detection of equine pulmonary lesions are currently lacking. The objectives of this retrospective, single center, observational study were to compare unilateral and bilateral thoracic radiographic projections for the detection of pulmonary lesions in a group of horses. Based on their clinical diagnosis, 167 adults and foals with bilateral thoracic radiographs were classified as having pneumonia (n = 88), inflammatory or diffuse pulmonary disease (n = 72), and pulmonary masses (n = 7). After an initial interrater repeatability test, right-to-left and left-to-right projections were anonymized and independently interpreted by a radiologist blinded to the clinical diagnosis. Scores were attributed for each pattern/lesion (alveolar, interstitial, bronchial, nodules/masses, cavitary lesions) and each quadrant. Agreement between scores from each projection was evaluated with Bland-Altman plots. Lesions identified on one side but not on the contralateral projection were considered discordant. There was no preferential lateralization of pulmonary lesions. The prevalence of discordance was 14.4%, 9.0%, and 4.2% for alveolar pattern, nodules/masses, and cavitary lesions, respectively. Up to nine horses (10.2%) with pneumonia could have been misdiagnosed. A pulmonary mass would have been missed in one case. For inflammatory or diffuse disease, discordance was slight, and the addition of contralateral projections had no impact on radiographic interpretation. In conclusion, in horses with pneumonia or neoplasia, bilateral projections, or adding at least one contralateral caudoventral view, increased the probability of identifying pulmonary lesions. In horses with inflammatory or diffuse disease, bilateral thoracic radiography provided no additional benefit.

Published research on the health status of wild bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in Eastern Canada is limited. This study examined the health status of 53 nestling bald eagles on Prince Edward Island in the summers of 2012 and 2013, including biochemistry reference intervals, a summary of hematological parameters, and background lead accumulation. Baseline lead levels of greater than 0.02 ppm were noted in nine nestlings, and the odds of lead accumulation decreased with increased weight and body condition score. Biochemical reference intervals were developed using a method outlined by the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. These intervals can vary between populations based on age and geographic area. These findings will therefore be useful in further research and clinical cases within this population, as well as further research into subclinical lead accumulation in growing raptors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of electric pulp test (EPT), cold pulp test (CPT) and tooth transillumination (TTI) in the assessment of pulpal health in dog teeth. Forty-five client-owned dogs requiring tooth extraction or pulpectomy were included. For each patient, one affected and two control healthy teeth were evaluated with EPT, followed by CPT and TTI. Direct pulp inspection was used as a gold standard. The real pulpal health (vital or necrotic) was determined by the presence or absence of bleeding after creating access to the pulp chamber. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy of EPT, CPT and TTI were obtained for each pulp test using the binomial Clopper-Pearson exact method to establish confidence intervals. Forty-five affected teeth were tested. Forty-three were tested with EPT, CPT, and TTI, and two were tested solely with EPT and CPT. All dogs tested with EPT and TTI were included in the study whereas 21 out of 45 (47%) dogs tested with CPT were excluded. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were respectively 0.96, 1.00, 1.00, 0.96 and 0.98 for EPT; 1.00, 0.89, 0.92, 1.00 and 0.95 for CPT; and 0.59, 0.95, 0.94, 0.67 and 0.76 for TTI. This study concluded that EPT is a highly reliable diagnostic test to evaluate pulpal health in dogs. The high accuracy of CPT is conditional on the patient's responsiveness to stimulation applied to its control healthy teeth. TTI was the least reliable test in the study.

BACKGROUND: The amount of thrombin generated reflects the endogenous thrombin potential (ETP), which depends on the balance of pro- and anticoagulant factors. The calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) allows for the direct measurement of thrombin generation during the clotting process. OBJECTIVES: (1) To describe the results of the CAT assay in horses, (2) to establish intra-assay and intra- and interindividual variation of thrombin generation in healthy horses, and (3) to compare in vitro low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) sensitivity between healthy and sick horses. The hypothesis for the last objective is that inhibition of thrombin generation in sick horses requires higher heparin concentrations. METHODS: The plasma of 10 healthy mixed breed horses was used for the determination of normal thrombin generation parameters (lag time, time to peak, peak thrombin concentration, and ETP). Five of the healthy horses were compared with five horses with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). In vitro heparin sensitivity was determined using LMWH. RESULTS: The intra-assay variation was small (<5%) for all parameters. Relatively large intra- and interindividual variation were observed in healthy horses. Four of the five sick horses with SIRS had a thrombogram compatible with a hypercoagulable state. The in vitro heparin sensitivity test suggested decreased sensitivity to LMWH in hypercoagulable states. CONCLUSIONS: The CAT assay could detect coagulopathy in horses. In vivo experiments are needed to confirm that it can be used to monitor responses to LMWH therapy.

Acrylic columns are commonly used in external skeletal fixators, especially for fracture management or trans-articular fixations. To the authors' knowledge, there are no studies demonstrating if the number or position of the transfixation pins influence the ultimate strength and stiffness of the acrylic column. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the number and position of transfixation pins (concentric versus eccentric) on the strength and stiffness of acrylic columns placed in axial compression. We hypothesized that strength and stiffness of acrylic columns under axial compression would not be affected by the number or position of the transfixation pins through the column. Three different groups of 12 acrylic columns were constructed with 4, 6, and 8 pins. In each group, 6 columns were constructed with the pins placed concentrically and the remaining 6 columns with the pins placed eccentrically. Each column was then placed under axial compression using a biomechanical testing machine. No significant differences were observed in ultimate strength regarding the number or position of transfixation pins (P = 0.83 and P = 0.27, respectively). However, stiffness was significantly decreased for columns with 4 eccentric pins compared with columns with 6 and 8 eccentric pins (P < 0.01) and with columns with 4 concentric pins (P < 0.001). Although the effects of transfixation pins on the rigidity of acrylic columns do not appear to be clinically significant, these tests were performed only in compression and results might differ if complete external fixator systems are used with different models of testing. Future studies are recommended.


Les colonnes d'acrylique sont couramment utilisées dans les fixateurs externes, notamment pour la gestion des fractures ou les fixations transarticulaires. Selon les auteurs, aucune étude ne démontre si le nombre ou le positionnement des broches de transfixation influence la résistance ultime et la rigidité de la colonne d'acrylique. Les objectifs de cette étude étaient d'évaluer l'effet du nombre et du positionnement des broches de transfixation (concentriques versus excentriques) sur la résistance et la rigidité des colonnes d'acryliques placées en compression axiale. Nous avons émis l'hypothèse que la résistance et la rigidité des colonnes d'acryliques en compression axiale ne seraient pas affectées par le nombre ou le positionnement des broches de transfixation à travers la colonne. Trois groupes différents de douze colonnes acryliques ont été construits avec quatre, six, et huit broches. Dans chaque groupe, six colonnes ont été construites avec les broches placées concentriquement et les six colonnes restantes avec les broches placées de manière excentrique. Chaque colonne a ensuite été placée sous compression axiale à l'aide d'une machine de tests biomécaniques. Aucune différence significative n'a été observée pour la résistance ultime selon le nombre ou le positionnement des broches de transfixation (P = 0,83 et P = 0,27, respectivement). Cependant, la rigidité a été significativement diminuée pour les colonnes avec quatre broches excentriques par rapport aux colonnes avec six et huit broches excentriques (P < 0,01) et avec les colonnes avec quatre broches concentriques (P < 0,001). Bien que les effets des broches de transfixation sur la rigidité des colonnes acryliques ne semblent pas être cliniquement significatifs, ces tests ont été effectués uniquement en compression et les résultats pourraient différer si des systèmes complets de fixateurs externes sont utilisés avec différents modèles de test. BACKGROUND: There is a knowledge gap about how equine MFC subchondral radiolucencies (SR) arise and evolve. Osteoclasts are believed to have a role but have not been studied in situ. OBJECTIVES: To measure and compare osteoclast density and the percentage of chondroclasts in healthy and MFC SR specimens from juvenile Thoroughbreds. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric study. METHODS: Medial femoral condyles (MFC) from a tissue bank of equine stifles were studied. Inclusion criteria were MFCs (≤8 months old) with a computed tomography SR lesion and histological focal failure of endochondral ossification (L group). Contralateral, lesion-free, MFCs were a control group (CC). Osteochondral slabs were cut through the lesion (L), a healthy site immediately caudal to the lesion, (internal control; IC) and the contralateral, site-matched controls (CC). Histological sections were immunostained with Cathepsin K for osteoclast counting. Osteoclasts in contact with the growth cartilage (chondroclasts) were also counted. The sections were segmented into regions of interest (ROI) at different depths in the subchondral bone: ROI1 (0-1 mm), ROI2 (1-3 mm) and ROI3 (3-6 mm). Osteoclasts were counted and the bone area was measured in each ROI to calculate their density. Chondroclasts were counted in ROI1 . RESULTS: Sections were studied from L and IC (n = 6) and CC sites (n = 5). Osteoclast density was significantly higher in ROI1 when compared with ROI3 in all groups. Although higher osteoclast density was measured in ROI1 in the L group, no significant differences were detected when compared with control ROIs. The proportion of chondroclasts in ROI1 was lower in the L sections when compared with controls but no significant differences were detected. MAIN LIMITATIONS: Limited sample size. CONCLUSIONS: Osteoclasts are important actors in MFC subchondral bone development, digesting both growth cartilage (chondroclasts) and bone, but the pathophysiology of early MFC SRs cannot be explained solely by an increased osteoclast presence in the subchondral bone.

To assess the variation of sea star (Asteroidea) populations in the Northern Gulf of California and look for evidence of sea star ulcerative lesions, counts of sea star species were recorded in 2019 using a standard belt-transect technique of 30 m2. During surveys, scuba divers also measured sea stars' diameter and examined them for ulcerative lesions. Ulcerative lesions were noted on Phataria unifascialis only. To verify changes in abundance and size of the two most abundant species, P. unifascialis and Pharia pyramidata, historical data from 2009, 2010, and 2016 were used as comparison and using the same methodology. To evaluate differences in abundance or diameter in sea star species over time, analysis of variance tests were used. We found a significant reduction in diameter for the species P. unifascialis and P. pyramidata over time (<0.0001), but only P. unifascialis also showed a significant decrease in abundance (P=0.018). The decrease in diameter recorded for these two species, along with the signs of ulcerative lesions found on one of them in 2019, suggest that a potential mortality event occurred and, as a result, new younger (i.e., smaller) recruits could be recovering the population. These results highlight the importance of population monitoring to understand complex reef community dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is associated with formation of calcium oxalate (CaOx) uroliths in humans. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between obesity and hyperlipidemia with CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths in client-owned dogs. ANIMALS: Dogs with (n = 55, U [uroliths]-dogs) and without (n = 39, UF [uroliths-free]-dogs) CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths. METHODS: Case-control study. U-dogs were retrospectively enrolled and compared to UF-dogs. Body condition score (BCS; 1-9 scoring scale), serum triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (CH) concentrations and glycemia (after >12-hour food withholding) were recorded in both groups. RESULTS: On univariate logistic regression, when excluding Miniature Schnauzers, odds of having uroliths increased by a factor of 3.32 (95% CI 1.38-11.12) for each mmol/L of TG (P = .027), of 39 (95% CI 9.27-293.22) for each mmol/L of glycemia (P < .0001), and of 2.43 (95% CI 1.45-4.45) per unit of BCS (P = .002). In multivariable models, the effect of TG was retained when all breeds were included for analysis and odds of having uroliths increased by a factor of 4.34 per mmol/L of TG (95% CI 1.45-19.99; P = .02). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Serum lipid screening in dogs diagnosed with CaOx uroliths might be recommended to improve their medical staging and management.

BACKGROUND: Avian necrotic enteritis (NE) caused by Clostridium perfringens is a disease with a major economic impact, generating losses estimated to 6 billion of dollars annually for the poultry industry worldwide. The incidence of the disease is particularly on the rise in broiler chicken flocks eliminating the preventive use of antibiotics. To date, no alternative allows for the efficient prevention of NE and a control of the disease using a vaccinal strategy would be mostly prized. For this purpose, comparative and subtractive reverse vaccinology identifying putative immunogenic bacterial surface proteins is one of the most promising approaches. RESULTS: A comparative genomic study was performed on 16 C. perfringens strains isolated from healthy broiler chickens and from broilers affected with necrotic enteritis. Results showed that the analyzed genomes were composed of 155,700 distinct proteins from which 13% were identified as extracellular, 65% as cytoplasmic and 22% as part of the bacterial membrane. The evaluation of the immunogenicity of these proteins was determined using the prediction software VaxiJen®. CONCLUSIONS: For the most part, proteins with the highest scores were associated with an extracellular localisation. For all the proteins analyzed, the combination of both the immunogenicity score and the localisation prediction led to the selection of 12 candidate proteins that were mostly annotated as hypothetical proteins. We describe 6 potential candidates of higher interest due to their antigenic potential, their extracellular localisation, and their possible role in virulence of C. perfringens.

BACKGROUND: Benign ureteral obstructions (BUOs) present a therapeutic challenge in cats. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the outcome and complications associated with placement of subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) device in cats. ANIMALS: Eighty-one client-owned cats (117 kidneys) with BUO treated by placement of a SUB. METHODS: Retrospective study. Medical records of cats with BUO and treated by SUB device placement between 2013 and 2018 were reviewed. Outcome and complications were documented. RESULTS: Hospital discharge rate was 94% (76/81). Serum creatinine on admission and at the time of discharge was 5.3 mg/dL (range, 1.2 to >15 mg/dL) and 2.1 mg/dL (range, 1.1-12.5 mg/dL), respectively. Luminal obstructions were documented in 17% (18/109) of the SUB devices of 16 cats discharged from the hospital. Infection was documented in 26% (20/76) of discharged cats. Kink of the device was documented in 10% (12/117) of devices. Time to luminal obstruction and kink were 204 days (range, 21-1678 days) and 58 days (range, 2-601 days), respectively. Fourteen of 81 (17%) cats required a revision surgery in order to restore patency of the device. At the time of writing, 53% (43/81) of cats were alive, with a mean survival time of 821 days (range, 1-2170 days) after surgery. Of those that died, 52% (20/38) died of urinary related causes. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This study suggests that SUB device placement is associated with good outcomes and could be considered for the treatment of BUO in cats.
