Revision of fleas of the genus Plocopsylla belonging to the 'angusticeps-lewisi' complex in the Andean biogeographic region, with the description of a new species.

In Argentina, the Andean biogeographic region accommodates the most diverse population of fleas in the country. The Craneopsyllinae (Siphonaptera: Stephanocircidae) represent one of the most commonly found subfamilies in this region and show some endemism and high diversity. Plocopsylla is the most diverse genus of Craneopsyllinae; it includes 10 species mainly distributed in the Patagonian subregion, which parasitize sigmodontine rodents (Rodentia: Cricetidae). We describe and illustrate the morphology of the aedeagus in species of Plocopsylla that belong to the 'angusticeps-lewisi' complex. This character is of diagnostic value in differentiating among species. A new species of this complex, Plocopsylla (Plocopsylla) linardii sp. n., is described and identified by the shape and chaetotaxy of the distal arm of sternite IX, as well as by the shape of the median dorsal lobe of the aedeagus. New host associations for this complex and range extensions for most of its species are reported. Plocopsylla (P.) silewi is recorded for the first time in Argentina. The southern limits of the distributions of Plocopsylla (P.) lewisi and Plocopsylla (P.) wilesi are extended to Santa Cruz Province. The angusticeps-lewisi complex is found for the first time in San Juan Province. The information may be useful in epidemiological studies of flea-borne diseases.

Smit (1968) misreported Tunga libis from Chile. Here we describe this flea as a new species. We analyzed free life females, male and embedded females. Moreover, we include data about its natural history and biology. These data will allow a better understanding about other Tunga fleas, and particularly for collecting males, which remain unknown to date.

Agastopsylla guzmani n. sp. (Ctenophthalmidae) and Delostichus degus n. sp. (Rhopalopsyllidae) are described. A key is proposed for the genus Agastopsylla; for the genus Delostichus, a brief comparison is made with D. incisus and D. ojedai described after the issue of the Catalogue of Smit (1987).

A new genus and a new species are described from fleas of occupied nest from humming bird, Oreotrichulus estella (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838). This taxa shows, in particular, some affinities with Dasypsyllus Baker, 1908, parasite on birds, cosmopolitan except in afrotropical and austral regions, and Smitipsylla Lewis, 1971, parasite on flying squirrels (Anomaluridae) in oriental region.

New taxa, known only by the male, are added to chilio-andean fauna. These fleas belong to sub-genus Neornipsyllus, parasites of Birds, essentially "Passeriforms". D. (N.) huinayensis sp. n. is, inter alia, characterized by the place of large setae on telomere; D. (N.) tapaculensis sp. n. show a tergit XI (or proctiger) unusual for the entire Order by the form and the chaetotaxy composed, essentially, of forked setae.

Doasypsyllus (Neomipsyllus) aedon n. sp. is described from specimens obtained from Passeriform's nests (Troglodytidae and Furnariidae).

Ectinorus (E.) uspallatae n. sp. and Delostichus ojedai n. sp. are described from the rodent Abrocomid, Abrocoma uspallata Braun and Mares, 2002, a new small mammal of Argentina.

A new subgenus of Plocopsylla is raised, Schrammapsylla Beaucournu and Ménier from the entire group B of Schramm & Lewis, 1988 and two new fleas from Chile and Argentina are described: Plocopsylla (S.) muruai n. sp. Beaucournu and Gallardo and Ectinorus (E.) mimacydis n. sp. Beaucournu and Gallardo. These two taxa are only known by the male sex.

Fleas in French Guiana (Insecta: Siphonaptera).

Based on a collection of approximately 760 fleas, of which 520 were collected in 1994-1995 during scientific studies at the Petit Saut dam site in French Guiana, 12 species and subspecies are discussed. Two taxa, Rhopalopsyllus garbei Guimarães, 1940 and Adoratopsylla intermedia copha (Jordan, 1926), are new records for French Guiana. The fleas collected during the 1994-1995 study were obtained from 35 species of mammals (3,484 specimens); of which, 21 (60%) species were negative for fleas. The mammals were captured primarily by live-trapping during a capture-release study along a portion of the Sinnamary River and its tributaries up to a distance of 70 km upstream from the Petit Saut dam site.

The collect of 973 Fleas on various small terrestrial mammals, from December 1987 till May 1988, in the Neuquén Province (Argentina), has given 20 taxa. Hectopsylla pascuali n. sp., Plocopsylla consobrina n. sp., Agastopsylla boxi gibbosa n. ssp., Chiliopsylla allophyla tonnii n. ssp. are described. Plocopsylla diana Beaucournu, Gallardo and Launay, 1986, Ctenoparia inopinata Rothschild, 1909, Neotyphloceras crassispina chilensis Jordan, 1936, Tetrapsyllus satyrus Beaucournu and Torrés-Mura, 1986, Ectinorus martini Lewis, 1976, are new from Argentina.

[New or little known fleas (Siphonaptera) from Chile: description of Plocopsylla diana n. sp. (Stephanocircidae)]. / Puces (Siphonaptera) nouvelles ou peu connues du Chili: description de Plocopsylla diana n. sp. (Stephanocircidae).

Plocopsylla diana n. sp. from the Chiloë and Malleco Provinces is distinguished from all species of this genus by the helmet-comb (18 to 19 teeth) and the genitalic parts of male. The male of Ctenoparia inopinata Rothschild 1909 is described, and for the first time, Ctenoparia jordani Smit 1955 and C. topali Smit 1963 are cited from Chile.

[Some new fleas of Chile (Siphonaptera) parasites of Ctenomys (Rod., Octodontidae)]. / Quelques nouvelles puces du Chili (Siphonaptera) parasites de Ctenomys (Rod., Octodontidae).

The authors examined 355 fleas of 9 species from Chili. These were collected from 7 species or subspecies of Ctenomys (Rod., Octodontidae). Tiamastus callens and Polygenis platensis cisandinus are new for this country; Tetrapsyllus maulinus sp. n., Plocopsylla fuegina sp. n. and Plocopsylla reigi sp. n. are described in this work.
