RESUMEN

Automated head chamber systems (AHCS; GreenFeed, C-Lock inc., Rapid City, SD) increasingly are being used for measuring gas flux of unrestrained cattle. There are a wide range of recommendations for what constitutes a "good" visit (i.e., duration) to an AHCS and how many visits are required for the AHCS to quantify gas fluxes accurately and precisely. Accordingly, the purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of visit duration thresholds and the subsequent effects of these thresholds on the number of visits needed to provide adequate estimates of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions, and oxygen (O2) consumption by beef cattle. This analysis utilized data from 3 previously published experiments with grazing beef steers and 1 experiment with finishing beef steers, with 103 steers total. When comparing all available visits, there was excellent agreement [Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) ≥ 0.96] between visits ≥3 min in duration and those ≥2 min for the three gases in all four experiments. When data from all 4 experiments were pooled, there was excellent agreement between visits ≥3 min and those ≥2 min and ≥1 min for all gases (CCC ≥ 0.96). These results suggest that estimates from visits ≥2 min are like those from visits ≥3 min. Next, we investigated if including visits ≥2 min or ≥1 min would increase the minimal number of visits required to provide excellent agreement with the "gold-standard" (mean of all visits ≥3 min). For this, we used only one of the experiments and randomly selected visits per animal ranging from n = 5-60, in increments of 5. The sole experiment was used because all animals had more than 60 visits. We then assessed the agreement between the "gold-standard" [mean of all visits ≥3 min (144 ± 55.01 visits per steer)] estimates of CO2, O2, and CH4. The minimum number of visits required to achieve excellent agreement (CCC ≥ 0.90) to the "gold-standard" estimate for all gases was 30 visits ≥3 min in duration, or 40 visits ≥2 min in duration. Visits ≥1 min in duration did not achieve excellent agreement, even when 60 were used. Based on these results, we recommend excluding visits < 3 min in duration with 30 minimum visit records per animal. However, if researchers choose to implement a 2-min visit duration threshold then 40 visit records are needed per animal.

Background: Current segmentation approaches for radiation treatment planning in head and neck cancer patients (HNCP) typically consider the entire mandible as an organ at risk, whereas segmentation of the maxilla remains uncommon. Accurate risk assessment for osteoradionecrosis (ORN) or implant-based dental rehabilitation after radiation therapy may require a nuanced analysis of dose distribution in specific mandibular and maxillary segments. Manual segmentation is time-consuming and inconsistent, and there is no definition of jaw subsections. Materials and methods: The mandible and maxilla were divided into 12 substructures. The model was developed from 82 computed tomography (CT) scans of HNCP and adopts an encoder-decoder three-dimensional (3D) U-Net structure. The efficiency and accuracy of the automated method were compared against manual segmentation on an additional set of 20 independent CT scans. The evaluation metrics used were the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), 95% Hausdorff distance (HD95), and surface DSC (sDSC). Results: Automated segmentations were performed in a median of 86 s, compared to manual segmentations, which took a median of 53.5 min. The median DSC per substructure ranged from 0.81 to 0.91, and the median HD95 ranged from 1.61 to 4.22. The number of artifacts did not affect these scores. The maxillary substructures showed lower metrics than the mandibular substructures. Conclusions: The jaw substructure segmentation demonstrated high accuracy, time efficiency, and promising results in CT scans with and without metal artifacts. This novel model could provide further investigation into dose relationships with ORN or dental implant failure in normal tissue complication prediction models.

On the basis of revisions of some of the systematic errors, we reanalyzed the electron-antineutrino angular correlation (a coefficient) in free neutron decay inferred from the recoil energy spectrum of the protons which are detected in 4π by the aSPECT spectrometer. With a=-0.104 02(82) the new value differs only marginally from the one published in 2020. The experiment also has sensitivity to b, the Fierz interference term. From a correlated (b,a) fit to the proton recoil spectrum, we derive a limit of b=-0.0098(193) which translates into a somewhat improved 90% confidence interval region of -0.041≤b≤0.022 on this hypothetical term. Tighter constraints on b can be set from a combined [shown as superscript (c)] analysis of the PERKEO III (ß asymmetry) and aSPECT measurement which suggests a finite value of b with b^{(c)}=-0.0181±0.0065 deviating by 2.82σ from the standard model.

Planets with radii between that of the Earth and Neptune (hereafter referred to as 'sub-Neptunes') are found in close-in orbits around more than half of all Sun-like stars1,2. However, their composition, formation and evolution remain poorly understood3. The study of multiplanetary systems offers an opportunity to investigate the outcomes of planet formation and evolution while controlling for initial conditions and environment. Those in resonance (with their orbital periods related by a ratio of small integers) are particularly valuable because they imply a system architecture practically unchanged since its birth. Here we present the observations of six transiting planets around the bright nearby star HD 110067. We find that the planets follow a chain of resonant orbits. A dynamical study of the innermost planet triplet allowed the prediction and later confirmation of the orbits of the rest of the planets in the system. The six planets are found to be sub-Neptunes with radii ranging from 1.94R⊕ to 2.85R⊕. Three of the planets have measured masses, yielding low bulk densities that suggest the presence of large hydrogen-dominated atmospheres.

In shock there is a significant mismatch between oxygen supply and consumption. In recent years the classification of forms of shock has been established based on pathophysiological and clinical aspects. The term distributive shock includes septic, anaphylactic and neurogenic shock. All these forms share a distinct vasoplegia with a relative volume deficiency. The adequate treatment of patients with distributive shock includes a rapid diagnosis and a consistent emergency treatment consisting of volume and catecholamine administration as well as additional specific emergency procedures when necessary.

We study the performance of a hot-electron bolometer (HEB) operating at THz frequencies based on superconducting niobium nitride films. We report on the voltage response of the detector over a large electrical detection bandwidth carried out with different THz sources. We show that the impulse response of the fully packaged HEB at 7.5 K has a 3 dB cutoff around 2 GHz. Remarkably, detection capability is still observed above 30 GHz in an heterodyne beating experiment using a THz quantum cascade laser frequency comb. Additionally, the HEB sensitivity has been evaluated and an optical noise equivalent power NEP of 0.8 pW/√H z has been measured at 1 MHz.

AIM: In the CheckRad-CD8 trial patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell cancer are treated with a single cycle of induction chemo-immunotherapy (ICIT). Patients with pathological complete response (pCR) in the re-biopsy enter radioimmunotherapy. Our goal was to study the value of F-18-FDG PET/CT in the prediction of pCR after induction therapy. METHODS: Patients treated within the CheckRad-CD8 trial that additionally received FDG- PET/CT imaging at the following two time points were included: 3-14 days before (pre-ICIT) and 21-28 days after (post-ICIT) receiving ICIT. Tracer uptake in primary tumors (PT) and suspicious cervical lymph nodes (LN +) was measured using different quantitative parameters on EANM Research Ltd (EARL) accredited PET reconstructions. In addition, mean FDG uptake levels in lymphatic and hematopoietic organs were examined. Percent decrease (Δ) in FDG uptake was calculated for all parameters. Biopsy of the PT post-ICIT acquired after FDG-PET/CT served as reference. The cohort was divided in patients with pCR and residual tumor (ReTu). RESULTS: Thirty-one patients were included. In ROC analysis, ΔSUVmax PT performed best (AUC = 0.89) in predicting pCR (n = 17), with a decline of at least 60% (sensitivity, 0.77; specificity, 0.93). Residual SUVmax PT post-ICIT performed best in predicting ReTu (n = 14), at a cutpoint of 6.0 (AUC = 0.91; sensitivity, 0.86; specificity, 0.88). Combining two quantitative parameters (ΔSUVmax ≥ 50% and SUVmax PT post-ICIT ≤ 6.0) conferred a sensitivity of 0.81 and a specificity of 0.93 for determining pCR. Background activity in lymphatic organs or uptake in suspected cervical lymph node metastases lacked significant predictive value. CONCLUSION: FDG-PET/CT can identify patients with pCR after ICIT via residual FDG uptake levels in primary tumors and the related changes compared to baseline. RESUMEN

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) based on quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) have transformed mid-infrared spectroscopy. However, QCL-OFCs have not yet been exploited to provide a broadband absolute frequency reference. We demonstrate this possibility by performing comb-calibrated spectroscopy at 7.7 µm (1305 cm-1) using a QCL-OFC referenced to a molecular transition. We obtain 1.5·10-10 relative frequency stability (100-s integration time) and 3·10-9 relative frequency accuracy, comparable with state-of-the-art solutions relying on nonlinear frequency conversion. We show that QCL-OFCs can be locked with sub-Hz-level stability to a reference for hours, thus promising their use as metrological tools for the mid-infrared.

Environmental degradation has been attributed to inefficient nitrogen utilization from pastoral dairy production systems. This degradation has especially been associated with the urine patch, which has been identified as a key component of nitrate leaching to waterways. However, a lack of information exists regarding the pattern of urination events and individual urination characteristics across the day, which would help inform strategic management decisions. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate and report the patterns and characteristics of fecal and urination events throughout the day for cows divergent for milk urea nitrogen breeding values (MUNBV) on either a plantain [Plantago lanceolata L. (PL)] or ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. (RG)] diet as ways to reduce environmental impact. Sixteen multiparous lactating Holstein Friesian × Jersey cows divergent for MUNBV were housed in metabolism crates for 72 h, with all excretion events captured and analyzed. Cows selected as low for MUNBV consistently had a 65.2-kg lower urinary urea nitrogen (UUN) load (kg/ha) than high MUNBV cows for all hours of the day when consuming RG. The association between lower urinary urea loading rates and less N leaching implies a reduced environmental impact from low MUNBV cows consuming RG. When cows consumed PL, regardless of MUNBV, they had on average a 137.5-kg (UUN/ha) lower loading rate compared with high MUNBV cows on RG and a 72.2-kg (UUN/ha) lower loading rate compared with low MUNBV cows consuming RG across the day. Cows on PL also exhibited a different diel pattern of UUN load compared with cows consuming RG. Differences in the diel pattern of N excreted in feces were also detected based on MUNBV and by diet, with low MUNBV cows excreting on average 3.06 g more N in feces per event for the majority of the day compared with high MUNBV cows when consuming RG. Lower UUN loading rates and more N excreted in feces indicate a potentially lower environmental impact from low MUNBV cows when consuming RG compared with high MUNBV cows. The use of the PL diet also resulted in lower UUN loading rates and greater levels of N excreted in feces compared with RG, therefore also indicating its ability to reduce environmental impact compared with RG.

Red tide blooms of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (K. brevis) produce toxic coastal conditions that can impact marine organisms and human health, while also affecting local economies. During the extreme Florida red tide event of 2017-2019, residents and visitors turned to social media platforms to both receive disaster-related information and communicate their own sentiments and experiences. This was the first major red tide event since the ubiquitous use of social media, thus providing unique crowd-sourced reporting of red tide impacts. We evaluated the spatial and temporal accuracy of red tide topic activity on Twitter, taking tweet sentiments and user types (e.g. media, citizens) into consideration, and compared tweet activity with reported red tide conditions, such as K. brevis cell counts, levels of dead fish and respiratory irritation on local beaches. The analysis was done on multiple levels with respect to both locality (e.g., entire Gulf coast, county-level, city-level, zip code tabulation areas) and temporal frequencies (e.g. daily, every three days, weekly), resulting in strong correlations between local per-capita Twitter activity and the actual red tide conditions observed in the area. Moreover, an association was observed between proximity to the affected coastal areas and per-capita counts for relevant tweets. Results show that Twitter presents a trustworthy reflection of the red tide's local impacts and development over time, and can potentially augment the already existing tools for efficient assessment and a more coordinated response to the disaster.

We demonstrate coherent averaging of the multi-heterodyne beat signal between two quantum cascade laser frequency combs in a master-follower configuration. The two combs are mutually locked by acting on the drive current to control their relative offset frequency and by radio-frequency extraction and injection locking of their intermode beat signal to stabilize their mode spacing difference. By implementing an analog common-noise subtraction scheme, a reduction of the linewidth of all heterodyne beat notes by five orders of magnitude is achieved compared to the free-running lasers. We compare stabilization and post-processing corrections in terms of amplitude noise. While they give similar performances in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, real-time processing of the stabilized signal is less demanding in terms of computational power. Lastly, a proof-of-principle spectroscopic measurement was performed, showing the possibility to reduce the amount of data to be processed by three orders of magnitude, compared to the free-running system.

Fodder beet (FB) is a source of readily fermentable carbohydrate that can mitigate early spring herbage deficits and correct the negative energy balance experienced during early lactation in pastoral dairy systems of New Zealand. However, the low-fiber and high-soluble carbohydrate content of both FB bulb and spring herbage are factors that promote subacute ruminal acidosis, impairing rumen function and limiting the marginal milk production response to supplement. In a crossover experiment, 8 Holstein Friesian × Jersey early-lactation dairy cows were used to test the effect of supplementing 16 kg of dry matter (DM) of a grazed perennial ryegrass herbage with 6 kg of DM/d of FB bulb (FBH) versus herbage only (HO) on changes in rumen function and grazing behavior. Following 20 d of adaptation to diets, DM disappearance (%) of FB bulb (FBH cows only) and herbage were measured in sacco, separately. Cows were fasted overnight, and the ruminal contents were bailed the following morning (~0930 h) again to determine the pool size of volatile fatty acids, ammonia, and particle size of digesta, as well as to estimate the rate of ruminal outflow and degradation of neutral detergent fiber. The FBH diet did not alter DM intake, milk yield, or milk solid (fat + protein) production compared with HO. Supplementation of herbage with FB reduced ruminal pH compared with HO between ~0800 h and 1300 h each day. During each period, 1 cow experienced severe subacute ruminal acidosis (pH <5.6 for >180 min/d) during final adaptation to the target FB allocation. The FBH diet reduced the ruminal pool of acetate and ammonia, but increased the ruminal pool of butyrate and lactate compared with HO. When fed FB, rumination and grazing time increased and grazing intensity declined compared with cows fed HO. Despite increased rumination, the comminution of large particles declined 28% between the first and second rumen bailing when cows were fed FB, and in sacco DM disappearance of perennial ryegrass declined 18% compared with cows fed HO. These results indicate that grazing dairy cows supplemented with FB (40% of daily intake) increase rumination and mastication intensity to counteract reduced ruminal degradation of ryegrass herbage due to low ruminal fluid pH.

BACKGROUND: Recent years have witnessed a considerable increase in clinical trials of new investigational agents for Fabry disease (FD). Several trials investigating different agents are currently in progress; however, lack of standardisation results in challenges to interpretation and comparison. To facilitate the standardisation of investigational programs, we have developed a common framework for future clinical trials in FD. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A broad consensus regarding clinical outcomes and ways to measure them was obtained via the Delphi methodology. 35 FD clinical experts from 4 continents, representing 3389 FD patients, participated in 3 rounds of Delphi procedure. The aim was to reach a consensus regarding clinical trial design, best treatment comparator, clinical outcomes, measurement of those clinical outcomes and inclusion and exclusion criteria. Consensus results of this initiative included: the selection of the adaptative clinical trial as the ideal study design and agalsidase beta as ideal comparator treatment due to its longstanding use in FD. Renal and cardiac outcomes, such as glomerular filtration rate, proteinuria and left ventricular mass index, were prioritised, whereas neurological outcomes including cerebrovascular and white matter lesions were dismissed as a primary or secondary outcome measure. Besides, there was a consensus regarding the importance of patient-related outcomes such as general quality of life, pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Also, unity about lysoGb3 and Gb3 tissue deposits as useful surrogate markers of the disease was obtained. The group recognised that cardiac T1 mapping still has potential but requires further development before its widespread introduction in clinical trials. Finally, patients with end-stage renal disease or renal transplant should be excluded unless a particular group for them is created inside the clinical trial. CONCLUSION: This consensus will help to shape the future of clinical trials in FD. We note that the FDA has, coincidentally, recently published draft guidelines on clinical trials in FD and welcome this contribution.

We describe the setup and the performance of a new pulsed Stern-Gerlach deflector and present results for small sodium-doped ammonia clusters Na(NH3)n (n = 1-4) in a molecular beam. NaNH3 shows the expected deflection of a spin ½ system, while all lager clusters show much smaller deflections. Experimental deflection ratios are compared with the values calculated from molecular dynamics simulations. The comparison reveals that intracluster spin relaxation in NaNH3 takes place on a time scale significantly longer than 200 µs. Assuming that intracluster relaxation is the cause of the reduced deflection, relaxation times seem to be on the order of 200 µs for all larger clusters Na(NH3)n (n = 2-4). Our work is a first attempt to understand the magnetic properties of isolated, weakly-bound clusters with relevance to the variety of diamagnetic and paramagnetic species expected in solvated electron systems.

Due to environmental concerns around N leaching and NO2 emissions from intensive pastoral dairying systems, there has been an increase in research focused on mitigation strategies and on-animal technologies to evaluate urination behavior of grazing dairy cows. Nitrogen leaching and NO2 emissions are associated with urine nitrogen loading onto pasture, which is a function of urine nitrogen concentration and urine volume per urination event. The PEETER V1.0 urine sensor (Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand) is a promising on-animal measurement technology; however, it has yet to be validated in vivo. The objective of this work was to validate the PEETER V1.0 urine sensor's estimations of individual urination events (i.e., urine volume). We fitted 15 Holstein-Friesian × Jersey lactating dairy cows (506 ± 35 kg of live weight, body condition score of 3.75 ± 0.25, and 150.4 ± 20.7 d in milk) with individual PEETER V1.0 sensors and placed them in metabolism crates for 72 h. Every urination event (n = 480) was collected manually and compared with the urine volume estimated by the PEETER V1.0 sensor to determine precision and accuracy using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). The CCC is calculated as a function of the Pearson's correlation (precision) and bias correction factor (Cb; Cb = 1 is perfect), and it demonstrates how far the values of the 2 methods are from perfect agreement (accuracy; i.e., a 45° line). The mean urination event volume (mean ± standard deviation) was 2.7 ± 0.94 and 2.6 ± 0.92 L for the actual and PEETER V1.0 sensor, respectively. The PEETER V1.0 sensor showed excellent precision (r = 0.90) with near-perfect accuracy (Cb = 1.00), and the CCC value was high (CCC = 0.90), indicating excellent agreement. Based on these results, the PEETER V1.0 urine sensor provides estimates that are precise and accurate. We conclude that the PEETER V1.0 sensor can be used to evaluate urination behavior of grazing dairy cows.

Perturbation facilitated double-resonant four-wave mixing is applied to access high-lying vibrational levels of the X 1Σg + (0g +) ground state of Cu2. Rotationally resolved transitions up to v″ = 102 are measured. The highest observed level is at 98% of the dissociation energy. The range and accuracy of previous measurements are significantly extended. By applying the near dissociation equation developed by Le Roy [R. J. Le Roy, J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Transfer 186, 197 (2017)], a dissociation energy of De = 16 270(7) hc cm-1 is determined, and an accurate potential energy function for the X 1Σg + (0g +) ground state is obtained. Molecular constants are determined from the measured transitions and by solving the radial Schrödinger equation using this function and are compared with results from earlier measurements. In addition, benchmark multi-reference configuration interaction computations are performed using the Douglas-Kroll-Hess Hamiltonian and the appropriate basis of augmented valence quadruple ζ type. Coupled-cluster single, double, and perturbative triple calculations were performed for comparison.

In most cases periprosthetic fractures of the acetabulum are complex injuries and are extremely challenging for the treating medical team. Over the years the frequency of this overall rare entity has increased due to demographic changes. In recent years several treatment algorithms were published and provided the possibility of developing standardized treatment concepts. The classification of the fractures and a dedicated preoperative strategy are highly important for the quality of patient-centered care. In the literature the frequency of intraoperative fractures was initially given as 0.4%; however, several studies have been published in which a far higher rate of intraoperative fractures was detected by computed tomography (CT), often referred to as so-called occult fractures. The causes are multifactorial and there is significant association with whether cement-free press-fit acetabular cups were used or cemented forms. In approximately 75% of the cases a low energy impact was the cause of the fracture. In these patients systemic processes, such as osteoporotic alterations of the bony substance or the possible presence of low-grade infections should be considered. This article gives an overview of the diagnostics, planning, challenges and osteosynthetic treatment options for periprosthetic fractures of the acetabulum.

Human traffic along roads can be a major vector for infectious diseases and invasive species. Though most road traffic is local, a small number of long-distance trips can suffice to move an invasion or disease front forward. Therefore, understanding how many agents travel over long distances and which routes they choose is key to successful management of diseases and invasions. Stochastic gravity models have been used to estimate the distribution of trips between origins and destinations of agents. However, in large-scale systems, it is hard to collect the data required to fit these models, as the number of long-distance travellers is small, and origins and destinations can have multiple access points. Therefore, gravity models often provide only relative measures of the agent flow. Furthermore, gravity models yield no insights into which roads agents use. We resolve these issues by combining a stochastic gravity model with a stochastic route choice model. Our hybrid model can be fitted to survey data collected at roads that are used by many long-distance travellers. This decreases the sampling effort, allows us to obtain absolute predictions of both vector pressure and pathways, and permits rigorous model validation. After introducing our approach in general terms, we demonstrate its benefits by applying it to the potential invasion of zebra and quagga mussels (Dreissena spp.) to the Canadian province British Columbia. The model yields an R 2-value of 0.73 for variance-corrected agent counts at survey locations.

There is an increasing pressure on temperate pastoral dairy production systems to reduce environmental impacts, coming from the inefficient use of N by cows in the form of excessive urinary N excretion and subsequent N leaching to the waterways and NO2 emissions to the atmosphere, these impacts have spurred research into various mitigation strategies, which have so far overlooked animal-based solutions. The objectives of this study were first, to investigate the relationship between MUN breeding values (MUNBV) and urinary urea N (UUN) concentrations and total excretion in grazing dairy cows; and secondly, to evaluate such a potential relationship in the context of different sward compositions and stage of lactation. Forty-eight multiparous, lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows genetically divergent for MUNBV were strip-grazed on either a ryegrass-white clover (24 cows) or ryegrass, white clover and plantain sward (24 cows), during both early and late lactation. Cows were fitted with Lincoln University PEETER sensors to evaluate urination behaviour by measuring frequency and volume of urination, as well as daily urine excretion. Urine and faeces were sampled for urea N content. Milk yield and composition were measured for individual cows in both periods. There was a positive relationship between MUNBV and MUN (R2 = 0.67, P ≤ 0.05), with MUN decreasing 1.61 ± 0.19 mg/dL per unit decrease in MUNBV across both sward types and stages of lactation. Urinary urea N concentration decreased 0.67 ± 0.27 g/L (R2 = 0.46, P ≤ 0.05) per unit decrease of MUNBV, with no effect on urine volume or frequency (number of urination events per day), which resulted in a 165.3 g/d difference in UUN excretion between the animal with the highest and the lowest MUNBV. At the same milk yield, percentage of protein in milk increased by 0.09 ± 0.03 (R2 = 0.61, P ≤ 0.05,) per unit decrease in MUNBV. Our results suggest that breeding and selecting for dairy cows with low MUNBV can reduce urinary urea N deposition onto pasture and consequently the negative environmental impact of pastoral dairy production systems in temperate grasslands. Moreover, reducing MUNBV of dairy cows can potentially increase farm profitability due to greater partitioning of N to milk in the form of protein.

We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic end point at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of (-1.0_{-1.1}^{+0.9}) eV^{2}. From this, we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of 2 and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.
