RESUMEN

We observe the effect of the Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference on the spectrum of a superconducting system containing a symmetric Cooper pair box (CPB) and a large inductance. By varying the charge n_{g} induced on the CPB island, we observe oscillations of the device spectrum with the period Δn_{g}=2e. These oscillations are attributed to the charge-controlled AC interference between the fluxon tunneling processes in the CPB Josephson junctions. The measured phase and charge dependences of the frequencies of the |0⟩→|1⟩ and |0⟩→|2⟩ transitions are in good agreement with our numerical simulations. Almost complete suppression of the single fluxon tunneling due to destructive interference is observed for the charge n_{g}=e(2n+1). The CPB in this regime enables fluxon pairing, which can be used for the development of parity-protected superconducting qubits.

RESUMEN

We report on the realization of a superinductor, a dissipationless element whose microwave impedance greatly exceeds the resistance quantum R(Q). The design of the superinductor, implemented as a ladder of nanoscale Josephson junctions, enables tuning of the inductance and its nonlinearity by a weak magnetic field. The Rabi decay time of the superinductor-based qubit exceeds 1 µs. The high kinetic inductance and strong nonlinearity offer new types of functionality, including the development of qubits protected from both flux and charge noises, fault tolerant quantum computing, and high-impedance isolation for electrical current standards based on Bloch oscillations.

RESUMEN

A continuous wave quantum cascade laser (cw-QCL) operating at 10 µm has been used to record absorption spectra of low pressure samples of OCS in an astigmatic Herriott cell. As a result of the frequency chirp of the laser, the spectra show clearly the effects of rapid passage on the absorption line shape. At the low chirp rates that can be obtained with the cw-QCL, population transfer between rovibrational quantum states is predicted to be much more efficient than in typical pulsed QCL experiments. This optical pumping is investigated by solving the Maxwell Bloch equations to simulate the propagation of the laser radiation through an inhomogeneously broadened two-level system. The calculated absorption profiles show good quantitative agreement with those measured experimentally over a range of chirp rates and optical thicknesses. It is predicted that at a low chirp rate of 0.13 MHz ns(-1), the population transfer between rovibrational quantum states is 12%, considerably more than that obtained at the higher chirp rates utilised in pulsed QCL experiments.

Two 5 µm continuous wave quantum cascade lasers are used to perform a counterpropagating pump and probe experiment on a low pressure sample of nitric oxide. The strong pump field excites a fundamental rovibrational transition and the weaker probe field is tuned to the corresponding rotationally resolved hot band transition. When both light fields are in resonance, rapid passage is observed in the hot band absorption lineshape arising from a minimally damped and velocity-selected sample of molecules in the v=1 state. The measured rapid passage signals are well described by a two-level model based on the optical Bloch equations.

RESUMEN

The production of a translationally cold (T < 1 K) sample of bromine atoms with estimated densities of up to 10(8) cm(-3) using photodissociation is presented. A molecular beam of Br(2) seeded in Kr is photodissociated into Br + Br* fragments, and the velocity distribution of the atomic fragments is determined using (2 + 1) REMPI and velocity map ion imaging. By recording images with varying delay times between the dissociation and probe lasers, we investigate the length of time after dissociation for which atoms remain in the laser focus, and determine the velocity spread of those atoms. By careful selection of the photolysis energy, it is found that a fraction of the atoms can be detected for delay times in excess of 100 µs. These are atoms for which the fragment recoil velocity vector is directly opposed and equal in magnitude to the parent beam velocity leading to a resultant lab frame velocity of approximately zero. The FWHM velocity spreads of detected atoms along the beam axis after 100 µs are less than 5 ms(-1), corresponding to temperatures in the milliKelvin range, opening the possibility that this technique could be utilized as a slow Br atom source.

RESUMEN

The DEPRESSION Awareness, Recognition and Treatment (D/ART) program under the sponsorship of the National Institutes of Health has made consistent efforts to help educate many communities around the nation about depression. One important aspect of this effort includes offering free screening for depression to the general public. Since new technology often promotes curiosity and interest, a computerized depression screening and awareness program was created to use at fairs and other local events. Individuals who participated completed a computerized version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depressed Mood Scale (CES-D) and then received a one page printout that described the common symptoms of depression, a score indicative of their level of depressed mood, a brief explanation of the score, and a telephone number where additional information could be obtained. This paper details the construction of the computerized version of the CES-D including an evaluation of psychometric properties and consumer satisfaction with the program.
