RESUMEN

The 44Ti(t1/2=59 yr) nuclide, an important signature of supernova nucleosynthesis, has recently been observed as live radioactivity by gamma-ray astronomy from the Cas A remnant. We investigate in the laboratory the major 44Ti production reaction 40Ca(alpha, gamma)44Ti (Ec.m. approximately 0.6-1.2 MeV/u by direct off-line counting of 44Ti nuclei. The yield, significantly higher than inferred from previous experiments, is analyzed in terms of a statistical model using microscopic nuclear inputs. The associated stellar rate has important astrophysical consequences, increasing the calculated supernova 44Ti yield by a factor approximately 2 over previous estimates and bringing it closer to Cas A observations.

RESUMEN

The analysis of the time-dependence of autonomic response requires: 1. A reliable procedure for the quantification of autonomic activity under nonsteady conditions, such as an algorithm for time-frequency decomposition (ex. SDA. Wigner-Ville, or others). 2. The choice of an adequate time scale for focusing on the data: (a) the regular, universal time scale, independent of the unsteady physiological conditions, or (b) a time axis defined by specific events related to an applied perturbation, as the indicators of specific experimental or physiological conditions, so that each individual is considered according to his own intrinsic time scale. The alignment of the various subjects according to their intrinsic time scale, reflecting their individual response mechanisms, may help to disclose a common pattern of autonomic function. Using an absolute time scale to align and average results for different subjects may obscure the underlying mechanisms. Several examples of autonomic challenges are presented, in which the use of an individual time scale contributes to unveil a typical response pattern: tilt test in vasovagal syncope, the autonomic effect of active standing on hypertension, and the autonomic response to acute hypoxia.

RESUMEN

A series of structural analogs of (s+)-cis-(1R)-3-isopropenyl-2,2-dimethylcyclobutanemethanol acetate, sex pheromone of the citrus mealybug,Planococcus citri (Risso), was synthesized. The analogs were tested in a field bioassay in order to determine the structure-activity relationships of the pheromone. All changes in structure reduced the activity of the test compounds, to various degrees. The most active analog tested was the homolog (+)-cis-(1R)-3-isopropenyl-2,2-dimethylcyclobutaneethanol acetate (IV), whose activity, at a higher dosage, was comparable to that of the pheromone. The alcohol (+)-cis-(1R)-3-isopropenyl-2,2-dimethylcyclobutanemethanol was tested in mixtures with the pheromone and found to be neither an inhibitor nor a Synergist. The results show that all functional groups of the pheromone molecule are essential for optimal biological activity.

RESUMEN

Spontaneous remission of the protein-losing gastropathy of Menetrier's disease occurred after four months of disease activity. Because the natural history and cause of Menetrier's disease is unclear, we suggest a more conservative approach to the management of this condition, despite recent publications to the contrary.
