RESUMEN

We investigate the harmonic generation induced by the interaction of a laser field with a solid target. The harmonic spectra is composed of the contribution of two processes interpreted as interband and intraband transitions. The interband process corresponds to the recombination from an upper band, populated during the laser interaction, to a lower band. The intraband process originates from nonlinear processes of the current in individual bands. In this Letter, we develop a theory based on Wannier states and reveal in depth the underlying physics of intraband dynamics. In particular, this approach highlights the determinant role of transitions between different lattice wells. Furthermore, our approach provides quantitative predictions concerning high-order harmonic energy cutoffs, harmonic yields, and emission times.

RESUMEN

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Budesonide, an oral glucocorticoid indicated for the treatment of Crohn's disease, rarely interferes with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis because more than 80% of it is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes. CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old female patient diagnosed with Crohn's disease, treated with oral budesonide, was admitted for Cushingoid symptoms and signs. The onset coincided with the use of fluvoxamine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and also a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzymes that presumably led to budesonide accumulation. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Practitioners should take into consideration the possibility of iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome caused by the association of oral budesonide with a P450 cytochrome inhibitor.

RESUMEN

The aim of this research was to optimize the extraction condition of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenols from the red grape of Vranac variety (Vitis vinifera L.) pomace seeds. The minimum experiments needed for optimization of UAE by response surface methodology (RSM) were obtained by spectrophotometric and HPLC analyses of seed extracts. UAE greatly depends on three independent variables: extraction temperature, time and liquid/solid ratio. The RSM can be used for optimization of UAE conditions to obtain maximum responses such as extraction yield, TPC, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin and proanthocyanidin content. The predicted values of the model were in accordance with experimental data under the same conditions (RSD was 0.74%). Experimental data also confirmed that UAE gives a better yield of phenolics than conventional solvent extraction (23.76% increase). The UAE under optimal extraction conditions is suitable for obtaining extracts that are rich in phenolic content, and have strong antioxidant activity which could be used as additives in food and medicaments.

RESUMEN

A calculation of the second-order (rescattering) term in the S-matrix expansion of above-threshold ionization is presented for the case when the binding potential is the unscreened Coulomb potential. Technical problems related to the divergence of the Coulomb scattering amplitude are avoided in the theory by considering the depletion of the atomic ground state due to the applied laser field, which is well defined and does not require the introduction of a screening constant. We focus on the low-energy structure, which was observed in recent experiments with a midinfrared wavelength laser field. Both the spectra and, in particular, the observed scaling versus the Keldysh parameter and the ponderomotive energy are reproduced. The theory provides evidence that the origin of the structure lies in the long-range Coulomb interaction.

RESUMEN

Intense, 100 fs laser pulses at 3.2 and 3.6 µm are used to generate, by multiphoton ionization, broadband wave packets with up to 400 eV of kinetic energy and charge states up to Xe(+6). The multiple ionization pathways are well described by a white electron wave packet and field-free inelastic cross sections, averaged over the intensity-dependent energy distribution for (e, ne) electron impact ionization. The analysis also suggests a contribution from a 4d core excitation, or giant resonance, in xenon.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of Serbian red wines produced from different international Vitis vinifera grape varieties and their correlation with contents of phenolic compounds were studied by spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods. The antioxidant activity of red wines was estimated through their ability to scavenge 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical (DPPH(•) ). The red wines, gallic acid, (+)-catechin and quercetin were screened in vitro for antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains using microdilution and disc diffusion techniques. RESULTS: Excellent correlations between the contents of quercetin-3-glucoside (R(2) = 0.9463) and quercetin (R(2) = 0.9337) and DPPH(•) -scavenging ability of the red wines were found. Serbian red wines exhibited significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria inocua, Micrococcus flavus, Sarcina lutea, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis and Shigella sonnei strains, which was in correlation with their phenolic composition and antioxidant activity. The compounds gallic acid, quercetin and (+)-catechin showed high activity against B. subtilis, S. aureus, S. lutea and M. flavus Gram-positive and S. enteritidis and P. aeruginosa Gram-negative strains. CONCLUSION: The results show that quercetin-3-glucoside and quercetin concentrations can be used as markers for the determination of antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of red wines.

RESUMEN

The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated. The production of Ne(9+) is observed at x-ray frequencies below the Ne(8+), 1s(2) absorption edge and demonstrates a clear quadratic dependence on fluence. Theoretical analysis shows that the production is a combination of the two-photon ionization of Ne(8+) ground state and a high-order sequential process involving single-photon production and ionization of transient excited states on a time scale faster than the Auger decay. We find that the nonlinear direct two-photon ionization cross section is orders of magnitude higher than expected from previous calculations.

RESUMEN

Sequential multiple photoionization of the prototypical molecule N2 is studied with femtosecond time resolution using the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). A detailed picture of intense x-ray induced ionization and dissociation dynamics is revealed, including a molecular mechanism of frustrated absorption that suppresses the formation of high charge states at short pulse durations. The inverse scaling of the average target charge state with x-ray peak brightness has possible implications for single-pulse imaging applications.

RESUMEN

The Linac Coherent Light Source free electron laser is a source of high brightness x rays, 2×10(11) photons in a ∼5 fs pulse, that can be focused to produce double core vacancies through rapid sequential ionization. This enables double core vacancy Auger electron spectroscopy, an entirely new way to study femtosecond chemical dynamics with Auger electrons that probe the local valence structure of molecules near a specific atomic core. Using 1.1 keV photons for sequential x-ray ionization of impulsively aligned molecular nitrogen, we observed a rich single-site double core vacancy Auger electron spectrum near 413 eV, in good agreement with ab initio calculations, and we measured the corresponding Auger electron angle dependence in the molecular frame.

RESUMEN

The first time-resolved x-ray/optical pump-probe experiments at the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) used a combination of feedback methods and post-analysis binning techniques to synchronize an ultrafast optical laser to the linac-based x-ray laser. Transient molecular nitrogen alignment revival features were resolved in time-dependent x-ray-induced fragmentation spectra. These alignment features were used to find the temporal overlap of the pump and probe pulses. The strong-field dissociation of x-ray generated quasi-bound molecular dications was used to establish the residual timing jitter. This analysis shows that the relative arrival time of the Ti:Sapphire laser and the x-ray pulses had a distribution with a standard deviation of approximately 120 fs. The largest contribution to the jitter noise spectrum was the locking of the laser oscillator to the reference RF of the accelerator, which suggests that simple technical improvements could reduce the jitter to better than 50 fs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The phenolic profile, determined by the relative proportions of different phenolic compounds, is characteristic for each grape variety and its corresponding wine. The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic and hydroxycinnamate acid, flavan-3-ol and flavonol contents and free radical-scavenging activity of single-cultivar (Cabernet Sauvignon) wines from selected Balkan vineyard regions by spectrophotometric methods and high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array and fluorescence detection. RESULTS: The contents of phenolic compounds varied depending on the agroclimatic factors and oenological practices of the vineyard region. The antioxidant activity of wine samples was estimated by their ability to scavenge the stable 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical (DPPH). All wines showed high DPPH-scavenging activity (70.03-83.53%, mean 73.76%). Significant correlations between catechin (R(2) = 0.8504) and quercetin (R(2) = 0.8488) concentrations and DPPH-scavenging ability of the wines were found. CONCLUSION: The concentrations of the main components catechin and quercetin can be used as biochemical markers for the authentication of red grape cultivars and their corresponding single-cultivar wines.

RESUMEN

We report the compression of intense, carrier-envelope phase stable mid-IR pulses down to few-cycle duration using an optical filament. A filament in xenon gas is formed by using self-phase stabilized 330 microJ 55 fs pulses at 2 microm produced via difference-frequency generation in a Ti:sapphire-pumped optical parametric amplifier. The ultrabroadband 2 microm carrier-wavelength output is self-compressed below 3 optical cycles and has a 270 microJ pulse energy. The self-locked phase offset of the 2 microm difference-frequency field is preserved after filamentation. This is to our knowledge the first experimental realization of pulse compression in optical filaments at mid-IR wavelengths (lambda>0.8 microm).

RESUMEN

Electron energy distributions of singly and doubly ionized helium in an intense 390 nm laser field have been measured at two intensities (0.8 PW/cm2 and 1.1 PW/cm2, where PW is defined as 10(15) W/cm2). Numerical solutions of the full-dimensional time-dependent helium Schrödinger equation show excellent agreement with the experimental measurements. The high-energy portion of the two-electron energy distributions reveals an unexpected 5U(p) cutoff for the double ionization (DI) process and leads to a proposed model for DI below the quasiclassical threshold.
