Noise from shipping activity in North Atlantic coastal waters has been steadily increasing and is an area of growing conservation concern, as it has the potential to disrupt the behaviour of marine organisms. This study examines the impacts of ship noise on bottom foraging humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the western North Atlantic. Data were collected from 10 foraging whales using non-invasive archival tags that simultaneously recorded underwater movements and the acoustic environment at the whale. Using mixed models, we assess the effects of ship noise on seven parameters of their feeding behaviours. Independent variables included the presence or absence of ship noise and the received level of ship noise at the whale. We found significant effects on foraging, including slower descent rates and fewer side-roll feeding events per dive with increasing ship noise. During 5 of 18 ship passages, dives without side-rolls were observed. These findings indicate that humpback whales on Stellwagen Bank, an area with chronically elevated levels of shipping traffic, significantly change foraging activity when exposed to high levels of ship noise. This measureable reduction in within-dive foraging effort of individual whales could potentially lead to population-level impacts of shipping noise on baleen whale foraging success.

RESUMEN

Pseudogymnoascus destructans is a psychrophilic fungus that infects cutaneous tissues in cave dwelling bats, and it is the causal agent for white nose syndrome (WNS) in North American (NA) bat populations. Geomyces pannorum is a related psychrotolerant keratinolytic species that is rarely a pathogen of mammals. In this study, we grew P. destructans and G. pannorum in static liquid cultures at favourable and suboptimal temperatures to: 1) determine if triacylglyceride profiles are species-specific, and 2) determine if there are differences in fatty acyl (FA) saturation levels with respect to temperature. Total lipids isolated from both fungal spp. were separated by thin-layer chromatography and determined to be primarily sterols (∼15 %), free fatty acids (FFAs) (∼45 %), and triacylglycerides (TAGs) (∼50 %), with minor amounts of mono-/diacylglycerides and sterol esters. TAG compositions were profiled by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). Total fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) and acyl lipid unsaturation levels were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Pseudogymnoascus destructans produced higher proportions of unsaturated 18C fatty acids and TAGs than G. pannorum. Pseudogymnoascus destructans and G. pannorum produced up to a two-fold increase in 18:3 fatty acids at 5 °C than at higher temperatures. TAG proportion for P. destructans at upper and lower temperature growth limits was greater than 50 % of total dried mycelia mass. These results indicate fungal spp. alter acyl lipid unsaturation as a strategy to adapt to cold temperatures. Differences between their glycerolipid profiles also provide evidence for a different metabolic strategy to support psychrophilic growth, which may influence P. destructans' pathogenicity to bats.

The effects of oral carbohydrate on modulating counterregulatory responses in humans remain undecided. This study's specific aim was to determine the effects of oral carbohydrate on autonomic nervous system (ANS) and neuroendocrine responses during hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia and euglycemia. Nineteen healthy volunteers were studied during paired, single blind experiments. Nine subjects underwent two-step glucose clamps consisting of 60 min of euglycemia (5.0 mmol/l) followed by either 15 g of oral carbohydrate (cal) as orange juice or a noncaloric control (nocal) and subsequent 90 min of clamped hypoglycemia (2.9 mmol/l). Ten other subjects underwent two randomized 150-min hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps with cal or nocal control administered at 60 min. Oral carbohydrate initially blunted (P < 0.05) epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, glucagon, pancreatic polypeptide, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), symptom, and systolic blood pressure responses during hypoglycemia. However, by the end of 90 min of hypoglycemia, plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine responses had rebounded and were increased (P < 0.05) compared with control. MSNA and cortisol levels remained suppressed during hypoglycemia (P < 0.05) after cal, whereas pancreatic polypeptide, glucagon, symptom, and blood pressure responses increased similar to control following initial suppression. Oral carbohydrate had no effects on neuroendocrine or ANS responses during hyperinsulinemic euglycemia. These results demonstrate that oral carbohydrate can have differential effects on the time course of ANS and neuroendocrine responses during hypoglycemia. We conclude that gastro-splanchnic-portal sensing of an amount of carbohydrate recommended for use in clinical practice for correction of hypoglycemia can have widespread and significant effects on central nervous system mediated counterregulatory responses in healthy humans.
