RESUMEN

A case of urethral leiomyoma in a 39 year old woman is reported. It is always a benign neoplasia, frequently hormone-dependent, rarely relapsing after excision. An accurate review of the literature has found over 110 cases up to date, in opposition to a recent publication in the Journal of Urology in 1992, which reported only 36 cases up to that year.

RESUMEN

A case of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma in a 67-year-old woman is reported, associated with a microinvasive vulvar carcinoma. The cystic tumor measured about 30x20x10 cm and the ovaries appeared normal. The histogenesis of this rare tumor is uncertain: most Authors suggest that it develops through mucinous metaplasia in a pre-existing mesothelium-lined cyst.

RESUMEN

A 29-year-old woman with tubal adenocarcinoma stage IA was treated only with bilateral salpingectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy, and omentectomy. Two years later the patient successfully underwent in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, and at 39 weeks gave birth to a healthy son by cesarean section. The result of oncologic follow-up 3 years after surgery is negative.

RESUMEN

Twenty-seven patients with carcinoma of the fallopian tube were treated at the First Obstet. Gynecol. Clinic, University of Milan. Nineteen of them had the primary surgical procedure in our center and accounted for 2% of tubal and ovarian carcinomas. The others had been operated elsewhere. Another primary genital cancer occurred in 7 of these women and a breast carcinoma was recorded in the history of other 2. At laparotomy, 11 tumors were Stage I, 9 Stage II, and 7 Stage III. Postoperative adjuvant therapy was not homogenous, however chemotherapy was given to about 59% of patients. Five years survival rate was 65% for Stage I, 34% for Stage II and 17% for Stage III. The discussion deals with early diagnosis, prognostic and/or therapeutic role of pelvic and/or aortic lymphadenectomy and effectiveness of adjuvant therapy.

RESUMEN

In a double-blind trial the effect of ICRF 159 or placebo associated with radiotherapy was compared in 70 patients with cervical carcinoma. No significant differences were found on histopathological examination of surgical specimens obtained 6 weeks after the end of the treatment. Clinical evaluation after a follow-up of 46 +/- 5 months, also showed no significant effect of ICRF 159 with radiotherapy.

RESUMEN

The Authors report survival data concerning 40 patients affected by cervicocarcinoma who, between 1970 and 1979, underwent exploratory laparotomy after pelvic radiotherapy, with detection of paraaortic lymphnode metastases. The patients subjected to laparotomy only (21 cases) have a 9-month average survival, which increases to 24 months in those with lymphadenectomy and complete pelvic surgery. While all the patients in the first group have died, in the second 3 survive at 5 years and 3 show no evidence of disease at 52,46 and 35 months from surgery. Hysterectomy with pelvic and lomboaortic lymphadenectomy, whether therapeutical or palliative, seems to be in patients with paraortic metastases provided surgery is feasable.

RESUMEN

Biopsy of the left supraclavear area was performed on 20 patients affected by uterine cervical carcinoma at an advanced stage and showing positivity in the pelvic or para-aortic lymph nodes. The aim was revealing clinically occult metastasis to the prescalene lymph nodes. The histologic examination revealed no metastasis in the 98 lymph nodes that were examined. Despite the negligible morbility of this minor surgical intervention, the Authors believe it to be useless as a common practice examination at the beginning of a therapeutical program. In their opinion, it may be useful in cases of clear positivity in lombo-aortic lymph nodes, with no abdominal metastasis, for which radical pelvic surgic therapy is planned.

RESUMEN

After intensive staging 74 ovarian cancer patients were randomized to two arms balanced for stage and post-surgery residual tumor. The two regimens were CTX 100 mg/day continuously and ADM 50 mg/m2 IV every 4 weeks plus CTX 100 mg/day. The response rates were respectively 42% and 52%. Median survival times were 13 and 14 months. The incidence of side effects was significantly higher in the combination-treatment arm. No other statistical differences were found.
