RESUMEN

Due to extreme weather events and deforestation the physical and chemical characteristics of watersheds in mountain areas could exceed the known variations. Therefore, the spring water of the Innerste river in the Western Harz Mountains (Germany) was monitored from 2020 to 2023. The monitoring approach is simple and can be directly transferred to other watersheds of springs which are connected to the meteoric water cycle. The specific electrical conductivity (SEC) of the water is compared to daily precipitation data. The SEC values range between 50 and 100 µS/cm. In September 2020 and July 2022 the spring dried out. A hysteretic relationship between spring runoff and spring water mineralisation was found. The SEC values of the spring water are rising during dry periods or in winter seasons with a long ice cover in the catchment area. The highest SEC values are typical for long dry periods and flush events after the drying out of the spring. The relationship of SEC and major ions of the spring water (especially bicarbonate) indicates that biogeochemical processes within the soil zone and water-rock interactions in fractured shales and greywackes of the catchment area control the chemical composition of the spring water. Comparing the obtained results with data measured before the first observed drying out of the spring, no unexpected new values and correlations of runoff, SEC values and ion concentrations were found.

RESUMEN

Sphagnum mosses are used for biomonitoring air pollution. In 2019, samples were taken from two peat bogs areas in Germany and two in Slovenia to determine differences in their levels of potentially toxic elements (PTE). The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) lockdown caused a global decrease in air pollution. Therefore, we repeated the monitoring in 2020 to see if this was also reflected in moss composition. Despite the variability within bogs and the areas, it is possible to distinguish the degree of air pollution between the two countries. In comparison to 2019, the German mosses have higher contents of almost all elements and the Slovenian are enriched in Cr and Hg in 2020. Comparison of the PTE contents, their ratios to Sc, and the enrichment factors show that the COVID-19 lockdown led to a decrease in long-range pollutants bound to finest particles and increased the influence of local soil dusting. The effect prevailed over lower precipitation in 2020 compared to 2019. Transport and industry continued to contribute significantly to contamination. Sphagnum mosses proved to be good indicators of the spatial and temporal extent of pollution. Even relatively short periods of lower air pollution are reflected in moss PTE contents.

RESUMEN

A strategy to neutralize acidic pit lakes was tested in a field mesocosm of 4500 m(3) volume in the Acidic Pit Mine Lake 111 in Germany. Carbokalk, a byproduct from sugar production, and wheat straw was applied near to the sediment surface to stimulate in lake microbial alkalinity generation by sulfate and iron reduction. The biogeochemical processes at the sediment-water interface were studied over 3 years by geochemical monitoring and an in situ microprofiler. Substrate addition generated a reactive zone at the sediment surface where sulfate and iron reduction proceeded. Gross sulfate reduction reached values up to 10 mmol m(-2) d(-1). The neutralization rates between 27 and 0 meq m(-2) d(-1) were considerably lower than in previous laboratory experiments. The precipitation of ferric iron minerals resulted in a growing acidic sediment layer on top of the neutral sediment. In this layer sulfate reduction was observed but iron sulfides could not precipitate. In the anoxic sediment H2S was oxidized by ferric iron minerals. H2S partly diffused to the water column where it was oxidized. As a result the net formation of iron sulfides decreased after 1 year although gross sulfate reduction rates continued to be high. The rate of iron reduction exceeded the sulfate reduction rate, which resulted in high fluxes of ferrous iron out of the sediment.

RESUMEN

Water samples from three quarry lakes and the surrounding fractured rock aquifer were investigated for delta18O and delta2H (H2O), delta15N and delta18O (NO3-), as well as anions and cations. Lake water and groundwater can be distinguished by their different chemical and isotopic composition. Because of evaporation processes, 18O and 2H are enriched in the lake water and can be used as natural tracers for the water dynamic of the lakes. The groundwater is characterised by high nitrate concentrations (up to 120 mg/l). Lake internal processes reduce the nitrate concentration in the quarry lakes. However, no enrichment of delta15N and delta18O in nitrate, typical for microbial nitrate degradation, is observed in the lake water. Because of the complex flow paths in the fractured rock aquifer and the intense chemical transformations at the interface between groundwater and lake water, isotopic and hydrochemical data of lake water and groundwater alone do not conclusively explain hydrological and hydrochemical processes of the investigated lake-groundwater system.
