RESUMEN

Quantum emitters located in proximity to a metal nanostructure individually transfer their energy via near-field excitation of surface plasmons. The energy transfer process increases the spontaneous emission (SE) rate due to plasmon-enhanced local field. Here, we demonstrate a significant acceleration of the quantum emitter SE rate in a plasmonic nanocavity due to cooperative energy transfer (CET) from plasmon-correlated emitters. Using an integrated plasmonic nanocavity, we realize up to sixfold enhancement in the emission rate of emitters coupled to the same nanocavity on top of the plasmonic enhancement of the local density of states. The radiated power spectrum retains the plasmon resonance central frequency and line shape, with the peak amplitude proportional to the number of excited emitters indicating that the observed cooperative SE is distinct from superradiance. Plasmon-assisted CET offers unprecedented control over the SE rate and allows us to dynamically control the spontaneous emission rate at room temperature which can enable SE rate based optical modulators.

RESUMEN

The use of nano/microspheres or beads for optical nanolithography is a consolidated technique for achieving subwavelength structures using a cost-effective approach; this method exploits the capability of the beads to focus electromagnetic waves into subwavelength beams called photonic nanojets, which are used to expose the photoresist on which the beads are placed. However, this technique has only been used to produce regular patterns based on the spatial arrangement of the beads on the substrate, thus considerably limiting the pool of applications. Here, we present a novel microsphere-based optical lithography technique that offers high subwavelength resolution and the possibility of generating any arbitrary pattern. The presented method consists of a single microsphere embedded in an AFM cantilever, which can be controlled using the AFM motors to write arbitrary patterns with subwavelength resolution (down to 290 nm with a 405 nm laser). The performance of the proposed technique can compete with those of commercial high-resolution standard instruments, with the advantage of a one-order-of-magnitude reduction in costs. This approach paves the way for direct integration of cost-effective, high-resolution optical lithography capabilities into several existing AFM systems.

RESUMEN

In this review we present the state of the art and the most recent advances in the field of optical sensing with hybrid plasmonic-photonic whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators. After a brief introduction on the basic physics behind photonic WGM resonators and localized surface plasmon (LSP) nanostructures, we analyze the different types of optical sensors specifically designed for bulk refractive index sensing, molecular binding and single object detection. We point out the physical and technological key points of the different approaches proposed in the literature, and we systematically compare hybrid sensors and purely photonic WGM sensors. This comparative analysis points out the real advantages brought by LSP nanostructures, and it identifies the most promising hybrid architectures.

RESUMEN

We fabricated and investigated a new configuration of 3D coaxial metallic antennas working in the infrared which combines the strong lateral light scattering of vertical plasmonic structures with the selective spectral transmission of 2D arrays of coaxial apertures. The coaxial structures are fabricated with a top-down method based on a template of hollow 3D antennas. Each antenna has a multilayer radial structure consisting of dielectric and metallic materials not achievable in a 2D configuration. A planar metallic layer is inserted normally to the antennas. The outer dielectric shell of the antenna defines a nanometric gap between the horizontal plane and the vertical walls. Thanks to this aperture, light can tunnel to the other side of the plane, and be transmitted to the far field in a set of resonances. These are investigated with finite-elements electromagnetic calculations and with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. The spectral position of the resonances can be tuned by changing the lattice period and/or the antenna length. Thanks to the strong scattering provided by the 3D geometry, the transmission peaks possess a high signal-to-noise ratio even when the illuminated area is less than 2 × 2 times the operation wavelength. This opens new possibilities for multispectral imaging in the IR with wavelength-scale spatial resolution.

RESUMEN

We have investigated the influence of Rabi splitting tuning on the dynamics of strongly coupled J-aggregate/surface plasmon polariton systems. In particular, the Rabi splitting was tuned by modifying the J-aggregate molecule concentration while a polaritonic system was provided by a nanostructure formed by holes array in a golden layer. From the periodic and concentration changes we have identified, through numerical and experimental steady-state analyses, the best geometrical configuration for maximizing Rabi splitting, which was then used for transient absorption measurements. It was found that in transient absorption spectra, under upper band excitation, two bleaching peaks appear when a nanostructured polaritonic pattern is used. Importantly, their reciprocal distance increases upon increase of J-aggregate concentration, a result confirmed by steady-state analysis. In a similar manner it was also found that the lifetime of the upper band is intimately related to the coupling strength. In particular, we argue that with strong coupling strength, i.e. high J-aggregate concentration, a short lifetime of the upper band has to be expected due to the suppression of the bottleneck effect. This result supports the idea that the dynamics of hybrid systems is profoundly dependent on Rabi splitting.

RESUMEN

With the objective to conceive a plasmonic solar cell with enhanced photocurrent, we investigate the role of plasmonic nanoshells, embedded within a ultrathin microcrystalline silicon solar cell, in enhancing broadband light trapping capability of the cell and, at the same time, to reduce the parasitic loss. The thickness of the considered microcrystalline silicon (µc-Si) layer is only ~1/6 of conventional µc-Si based solar cells while the plasmonic nanoshells are formed by a combination of silica and gold, respectively core and shell. We analyze the cell optical response by varying both the geometrical and optical parameters of the overall device. In particular, the nanoshells core radius and metal thickness, the periodicity, the incident angle of the solar radiation and its wavelength are varied in the widest meaningful ranges. We further explain the reason for the absorption enhancement by calculating the electric field distribution associated to resonances of the device. We argue that both Fabry-Pérot-like and localized plasmon modes play an important role in this regard.

RESUMEN

We present a theoretical optimisation of 1D apodized grating couplers in a "pure" Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) architecture, i.e. without any bottom reflector element, by means of a general mutative method. We perform a comprehensive 2D Finite Difference Time Domain study of chirped and apodized grating couplers in 220 nm SOI, and demonstrate that the global maximum coupling efficiency in that platform is capped to 65% (-1.9 dB). Moving to designs with thicker Si-layers, we identify a new record design in 340 nm SOI, with a simulated coupling efficiency of 89% (-0.5 dB). Going to thicker Si layers does not further improve the efficiency, implying that -0.5 dB may be a global maximum for a grating coupler in SOI without a bottom-reflector. Even after allowing for 193 nm UV-lithographic fabrication constraints, the 340 nm design still offers -0.7 dB efficiency. These new apodized designs are the first pure SOI couplers compatible with deep-UV lithography to offer better than -1 dB insertion losses. With only very minor changes to existing deposition and lithography recipes, they are compatible with the multi-project wafer runs already offered by Si-Photonics foundries.

RESUMEN

We propose a new figure of merit to assess the performance of light trapping nanostructures for solar cells, which we call the light trapping efficiency (LTE). The LTE has a target value of unity to represent the performance of an ideal Lambertian scatterer, although this is not an absolute limit but rather a benchmark value. Since the LTE aims to assess the nanostructure itself, it is, in principle, independent of the material, fabrication method or technology used. We use the LTE to compare numerous proposals in the literature and to identify the most promising light trapping strategies. We find that different types of photonic structures allow approaching the Lambertian limit, which shows that the light trapping problem can be approached from multiple directions. The LTE of theoretical structures significantly exceeds that of experimental structures, which highlights the need for theoretical descriptions to be more comprehensive and to take all relevant electro-optic effects into account.

RESUMEN

We theoretically investigate the light-trapping properties of one- and two-dimensional periodic patterns etched on the front surface of c-Si and a-Si thin film solar cells with a silver back reflector and an anti-reflection coating. For each active material and configuration, absorbance A and short-circuit current density Jsc are calculated by means of rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA), for different active materials thicknesses in the range of interest of thin film solar cells and in a wide range of geometrical parameters. The results are then compared with Lambertian limits to light-trapping for the case of zero absorption and for the general case of finite absorption in the active material. With a proper optimization, patterns can give substantial absorption enhancement, especially for 2D patterns and for thinner cells. The effects of the photonic patterns on light harvesting are investigated from the optical spectra of the optimized configurations. We focus on the main physical effects of patterning, namely a reduction of reflection losses (better impedance matching conditions), diffraction of light in air or inside the cell, and coupling of incident radiation into quasi-guided optical modes of the structure, which is characteristic of photonic light-trapping.
