BACKGROUND & AIMS: A dysfunctional hypothalamus may result in decreased feelings of satiety (hyperphagia), decreased energy expenditure, and increased fat storage as a consequence of hyperinsulinemia. Hypothalamic dysfunction may thus lead to morbid obesity and can be encountered in childhood as a consequence of congenital, genetic, or acquired disorders. There is currently no effective treatment for hypothalamic obesity (HO). However, comparable to alimentary obesity, dietary and lifestyle interventions may be considered the cornerstones of obesity treatment. We questioned the effect of dietary or lifestyle interventions for HO and systematically searched the literature for evidence on feasibility, safety, or efficacy of dietary or lifestyle interventions for childhood hypothalamic overweight or obesity. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE (including Cochrane Library), EMBASE, and CINAHL (May 2023). Studies assessing feasibility, safety, or efficacy of any dietary or lifestyle intervention in children with hypothalamic overweight or obesity, were included. Animal studies, studies on non-diet interventions, and studies with no full text available were excluded. Because the number of studies to be included was low, the search was repeated for adults with hypothalamic overweight or obesity. Risk of bias was assessed with an adapted Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Level of evidence was assessed using the GRADE system. Descriptive data were described, as pooled-data analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity of included studies. RESULTS: In total, twelve studies were included, with a total number of 118 patients (age 1-19 years) of whom one with craniopharyngioma, one with ROHHAD-NET syndrome, 50 with monogenic obesity, and 66 with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Four studies reported a dietary intervention as feasible. However, parents did experience difficulties with children still stealing food, and especially lowering carbohydrates was considered to be challenging. Seven studies reported on efficacy of a dietary intervention: a well-balanced restrictive caloric diet (30% fat, 45% carbohydrates, and 25% protein) and various hypocaloric diets (8-10 kcal/cm/day) were considered effective in terms of weight stabilization or decrease. No negative effect on linear growth was reported. Four studies reported on specific lifestyle interventions, of which three also included a dietary intervention. Combined dietary and lifestyle intervention resulted in decreased BMI, although BMI returned to baseline values on long-term. One additional study was identified in adults after brain trauma and showed a significant reduction in BMI in one out of eight patients after a combined dietary and lifestyle intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Hypocaloric diet or restrictive macronutrient diet with lower percentage of carbohydrates seems feasible and effective for childhood HO, although most of the studies had a high risk of bias, small cohorts without control groups, and were conducted in children with PWS only, compromising the generalizability. Lifestyle interventions only resulted in BMI decrease in short-term, indicating that additional guidance is needed to sustain its effect in the long-term. Literature on feasibility and efficacy of a dietary or lifestyle intervention for hypothalamic overweight or obesity is scarce, especially in children with acquired HO (following treatment for a suprasellar tumor). There is need for prospective (controlled) studies to determine which dietary and lifestyle intervention are most helpful for this specific patient group.

MYC oncogene rearrangements (MYC-R) negatively affect survival in patients with Ann Arbor stage III-IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), but their impact in limited stage (LS) I-II is unclear. Therefore, we assessed the impact of MYC-R on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in LS DLBCL patients at the population level. We identified 1,434 LS DLBCL patients with known MYC-R status diagnosed between 2014 and 2020, who received R-CHOP(-like) regimens using the Netherlands Cancer Registry, with survival follow-up until February 2022. Stage I patients with (n = 83, 11%) and without (n = 650, 89%) a MYC-R had similar 2-years PFS (89% and 93%, p = 0.63) and OS (both 95%, p = 0.22). Conversely, stage II DLBCL patients with a MYC-R (n = 90, 13%) had inferior survival outcomes compared to stage II patients without a MYC-R (n = 611, 87%) (PFS 70% vs. 89%, p = 0.001; OS 79% vs. 94%, p < 0.0001). Both single MYC-R (single hit, n = 36) and concurrent BCL2 and/or BCL6 rearrangements (double/triple hit, n = 39) were associated with increased mortality and relapse risk. In conclusion, in stage II DLBCL a MYC-R is negatively associated with survival. In stage I DLBCL, however, survival outcomes are excellent irrespective of MYC-R status. This challenges the diagnostic assessment of MYC-R in stage I DLBCL patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: More insight into the incidence of and factors associated with progression following a first episode of acute pancreatitis (AP) would offer opportunities for improvements in disease management and patient counseling. METHODS: A long-term post hoc analysis of a prospective cohort of patients with AP (2008-2015) was performed. Primary endpoints were recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP), chronic pancreatitis (CP), and pancreatic cancer. Cumulative incidence calculations and risk analyses were performed. RESULTS: Overall, 1184 patients with a median follow-up of 9 years (IQR: 7-11) were included. RAP and CP occurred in 301 patients (25%) and 72 patients (6%), with the highest incidences observed for alcoholic pancreatitis (40% and 22%). Pancreatic cancer was diagnosed in 14 patients (1%). Predictive factors for RAP were alcoholic and idiopathic pancreatitis (OR 2.70, 95% CI 1.51-4.82 and OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.40-3.02), and no pancreatic interventions (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.10-3.01). Non-biliary etiology (alcohol: OR 5.24, 95% CI 1.94-14.16, idiopathic: OR 4.57, 95% CI 2.05-10.16, and other: OR 2.97, 95% CI 1.11-7.94), RAP (OR 4.93, 95% CI 2.84-8.58), prior pancreatic interventions (OR 3.10, 95% CI 1.20-8.02), smoking (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.14-4.78), and male sex (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.05-4.05) were independently associated with CP. CONCLUSION: Disease progression was observed in a quarter of pancreatitis patients. We identified several risk factors that may be helpful to devise personalized strategies with the intention to reduce the impact of disease progression in patients with AP.

For elderly frail patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), an attenuated chemo-immunotherapy strategy of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (R-miniCHOP) was introduced as a treatment option as from 2014 onward in the Netherlands. Although R-miniCHOP is more tolerable, reduction of chemotherapy could negatively affect survival compared to R-CHOP. The aim of this analysis was to assess survival of patients treated with R-miniCHOP compared to R-CHOP. DLBCL patients ≥65 years, newly diagnosed in 2014-2020, who received ≥1 cycle of R-miniCHOP or R-CHOP were identified in the Netherlands Cancer Registry, with survival follow-up through 2022. Patients were propensity-score-matched for baseline characteristics. Main endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and relative survival (RS). The use of R-miniCHOP in DLBCL increased from 2% in 2014 to 15% in 2020. In total, 384 patients treated with R-miniCHOP and 384 patients treated with R-CHOP were included for comparison (median age; 81 years, stage 3-4; 68%). The median number of R-(mini)CHOP cycles was 6 (range, 1-8). The 2-year PFS, OS and RS were inferior for patients treated with R-miniCHOP compared to R-CHOP (PFS 51% vs. 68%, p < .01; OS 60% vs. 75%, p < .01; RS 69% vs. 86%, p < .01). In multivariable analysis, patients treated with R-miniCHOP had higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to patients treated with R-CHOP (HR 1.73; 95%CI, 1.39-2.17). R-miniCHOP is effective for most elderly patients. Although survival is inferior compared to R-CHOP, the use of R-miniCHOP as initial treatment is increasing. Therefore, fitness needs to be carefully weighed in treatment selection.

Excess loading of nitrogen and phosphorus to river networks causes environmental harm, but reducing loads from large river basins is difficult and expensive. We develop a new tool, the River Basin Export Reduction Optimization Support Tool (RBEROST) to identify least-cost combinations of management practices that will reduce nutrient loading to target levels in downstream and mid-network waterbodies. We demonstrate the utility of the tool in a case study in the Upper Connecticut River basin in New England, USA. The total project cost of optimized lowest-cost plans ranged from $18.0 million to $41.0 million per year over 15 years depending on user specifications. Plans include both point source and non-point source management practices, and most costs are associated with urban stormwater practices. Adding a 2% margin of safety to loading targets improved estimated probability of success from 37.5% to 99%. The large spatial scale of RBEROST, and the consideration of both point and non-point source contributions of nutrients, makes it well suited as an initial screening tool in watershed planning.

1. Litter quality has been related to broiler performance, behaviour, welfare, dust and ammonia (NH3) emissions. Drier litter leads to a reduction in NH3 emissions and reduces the formation of foot- and hock lesions. However, maintaining good litter quality is often challenging. This study investigated the effects of different bedding materials on litter quality and NH3 concentrations at litter level, broiler performance, foot- and hock lesions, plumage cleanliness and breast skin irritation.2. A total of 2160 Ross 308 male broilers were randomly assigned to 36 floor pens. There were six replications for each of the following six litter treatments: wood shavings, flax, peat, maize silage, chopped wheat straw and flax pellets.3. For the total period, the highest feed intake and body weight was obtained for broilers housed on peat. The NH3 concentrations measured at litter level was highest for peat and chopped wheat straw at 36 d of age and numerically the lowest for flax at 30 and 36 d of age. Maize silage remained friable, but did not result in lower NH3 concentrations compared to wood shavings. Chopped wheat straw and wood shavings gave rise to the highest incidence of foot lesions at 38 d of age, while broilers kept on flax, peat, maize silage and flax pellets had the lowest incidence of foot lesions at the end of the rearing period.4. The results of the current study suggest a complicated relationship between the type of bedding material, litter conditions and NH3 volatilised from the litter.

We benchmark a set of quantum-chemistry methods, including multitrajectory Ehrenfest, fewest-switches surface-hopping, and multiconfigurational-Ehrenfest dynamics, against exact quantum-many-body techniques by studying real-time dynamics in the Holstein model. This is a paradigmatic model in condensed matter theory incorporating a local coupling of electrons to Einstein phonons. For the two-site and three-site Holstein model, we discuss the exact and quantum-chemistry methods in terms of the Born-Huang formalism, covering different initial states, which either start on a single Born-Oppenheimer surface, or with the electron localized to a single site. For extended systems with up to 51 sites, we address both the physics of single Holstein polarons and the dynamics of charge-density waves at finite electron densities. For these extended systems, we compare the quantum-chemistry methods to exact dynamics obtained from time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations with local basis optimization (DMRG-LBO). We observe that the multitrajectory Ehrenfest method, in general, only captures the ultrashort time dynamics accurately. In contrast, the surface-hopping method with suitable corrections provides a much better description of the long-time behavior but struggles with the short-time description of coherences between different Born-Oppenheimer states. We show that the multiconfigurational Ehrenfest method yields a significant improvement over the multitrajectory Ehrenfest method and can be converged to the exact results in small systems with moderate computational efforts. We further observe that for extended systems, this convergence is slower with respect to the number of configurations. Our benchmark study demonstrates that DMRG-LBO is a useful tool for assessing the quality of the quantum-chemistry methods.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the costs and non-inferiority of a strategy starting with the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) compared with endometrial ablation (EA) in the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). DESIGN: Cost-effectiveness analysis from a societal perspective alongside a multicentre randomised non-inferiority trial. SETTING: General practices and gynaecology departments in the Netherlands. POPULATION: In all, 270 women with HMB, aged ≥34 years old, without intracavitary pathology or wish for a future child. METHODS: Randomisation to a strategy starting with the LNG-IUS (n = 132) or EA (n = 138). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was estimated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Direct medical costs and (in)direct non-medical costs were calculated. The primary outcome was menstrual blood loss after 24 months, measured with the mean Pictorial Blood Assessment Chart (PBAC)-score (non-inferiority margin 25 points). A secondary outcome was successful blood loss reduction (PBAC-score ≤75 points). RESULTS: Total costs per patient were €2,285 in the LNG-IUS strategy and €3,465 in the EA strategy (difference: €1,180). At 24 months, mean PBAC-scores were 64.8 in the LNG-IUS group (n = 115) and 14.2 in the EA group (n = 132); difference 50.5 points (95% CI 4.3-96.7). In the LNG-IUS group, 87% of women had a PBAC-score ≤75 points versus 94% in the EA group (relative risk [RR] 0.93, 95% CI 0.85-1.01). The ICER was €23 (95% CI €5-111) per PBAC-point. CONCLUSIONS: A strategy starting with the LNG-IUS was cheaper than starting with EA, but non-inferiority could not be demonstrated. The LNG-IUS is reversible and less invasive and can be a cost-effective treatment option, depending on the success rate women are willing to accept. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding starting with LNG-IUS is cheaper but slightly less effective than endometrial ablation.

RESUMEN

We describe design, implementation, and performance of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) package for superconducting qubit chips or other surface sensitive quantum devices. The UHV loading procedure allows for annealing, ultra-violet light irradiation, ion milling, and surface passivation of quantum devices before sealing them into a measurement package. The package retains vacuum during the transfer to cryogenic temperatures by active pumping with a titanium getter layer. We characterize the treatment capabilities of the system and present measurements of flux tunable qubits with an average T1 = 84 µs and T2 echo=134µs after vacuum-loading these samples into a bottom loading dilution refrigerator in the UHV-package.

OBJECTIVES: Hamstring injuries are common among soccer players. The hamstring outcome score (HaOS) might be useful to identify amateur players at risk of hamstring injury. Therefore the aims of this study were: To determine the association between the HaOS and prior and new hamstring injuries in amateur soccer players, and to determine the prognostic value of the HaOS for identifying players with or without previous hamstring injuries at risk of future injury. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: HaOS scores and information about previous injuries were collected at baseline and new injuries were prospectively registered during a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 400 amateur soccer players. Analysis of variance and t-tests were used to determine the association between the HaOS and previous and new hamstring injury, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated the prognostic value of the HaOS for predicting new hamstring injuries. RESULTS: Analysis of data of 356 players indicated that lower HaOS scores were associated with more previous hamstring injuries (F=17.4; p=0.000) and that players with lower HaOS scores sustained more new hamstring injuries (T=3.59, df=67.23, p=0.001). With a conventional HaOS score cut-off of 80%, logistic regression models yielded a probability of hamstring injuries of 11%, 18%, and 28% for players with 0,1, or 2 hamstring injuries in the previous season, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The HaOS is associated with previous and future hamstring injury and might be a useful tool to provide players with insight into their risk of sustaining a new hamstring injury risk when used in combination with previous injuries.

Purpose The aim of this research was to study the effectiveness on return to work (RTW) of an early tailored work-related support intervention in patients diagnosed with curative gastrointestinal cancer. Methods A multicenter randomized controlled trial was undertaken, in which patients were assigned randomly to the intervention or the control group (usual care). The intervention encompassed three psychosocial work-related support meetings, starting before treatment. Five self-reported questionnaires were sent over twelve months of follow-up. Primary outcome was days until RTW (fulltime or partial) and secondary outcomes included work status, quality of life, work ability, and work limitations. Descriptive analysis, Kaplan-Meier analysis, relative risk ratio and linear mixed models were applied. Results Participants (N = 88) had a mean age of 55 years; 67% were male and the most common cancer type was colon cancer (66%). Of the participants, 42 were randomized to the intervention group. The median time from sick leave until RTW was 233 days (range 187-279 days) for the control group, versus 190 days (range 139-240 days) for the intervention group (log-rank p = 0.37). The RTW rate at twelve months after baseline was 83.3% for the intervention group and 73.5% for the control group. Work limitations did statistically differ between the groups over time (p = 0.01), but quality of life and work ability did not. Conclusion Patients in the intervention group seem to take fewer days to RTW, albeit not to a statistically significant extent.Trial registration Trial NL4920 (NTR5022) (Dutch Trial Register https://www.trialregister.nl ).

In professional soccer, increasing amounts of data are collected that harness great potential when it comes to analysing tactical behaviour. Unlocking this potential is difficult as big data challenges the data management and analytics methods commonly employed in sports. By joining forces with computer science, solutions to these challenges could be achieved, helping sports science to find new insights, as is happening in other scientific domains. We aim to bring multiple domains together in the context of analysing tactical behaviour in soccer using position tracking data. A systematic literature search for studies employing position tracking data to study tactical behaviour in soccer was conducted in seven electronic databases, resulting in 2338 identified studies and finally the inclusion of 73 papers. Each domain clearly contributes to the analysis of tactical behaviour, albeit in - sometimes radically - different ways. Accordingly, we present a multidisciplinary framework where each domain's contributions to feature construction, modelling and interpretation can be situated. We discuss a set of key challenges concerning the data analytics process, specifically feature construction, spatial and temporal aggregation. Moreover, we discuss how these challenges could be resolved through multidisciplinary collaboration, which is pivotal in unlocking the potential of position tracking data in sports analytics.

The aim of this study was to evaluate secretory antibodies to citrullinated proteins (ACPA) in plasma and immunoglobulin (Ig)A ACPA in saliva from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their unaffected first-degree relatives (FDRs). Patients with RA (n = 194) and first-degree relatives unaffected by RA (n = 191) were recruited for analysis of secretory antibodies to second-generation cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) in plasma. From a subpopulation (25 RA patients, 21 first-degree relatives and 11 controls), saliva samples were obtained for IgA anti-CCP analysis. The presence of secretory ACPA was compared between subject categories, and related to genetic and environmental risk factors. Secretory ACPA occurred in 37 (19%) plasma samples from patients with RA, but only in two (1%) of FDRs. IgA ACPA in saliva was found in three of 25 (12%) patients with RA, but not in any of the 21 FDRs (< 5%). No significant associations were seen between the presence of secretory ACPA and SE or smoking, either among RA patients or among FDRs. Despite occurring in 19% of RA plasma, secretory ACPA was rare in both saliva and plasma among FDRs, even among those positive for conventional ACPA of non-mucosal origin. Longitudinal studies are warranted to determine whether circulating secretory ACPA occurs before or in parallel with the development of clinical arthritis.

Sea urchins, including Tripneustes gratilla, are susceptible to a disease known as bald sea urchin disease, which has the potential to lead to economic losses in this emerging aquaculture industry in South Africa. This disease is characterized by lesions that form on sea urchin exoskeletal surfaces. This study aimed to characterize the body surface bacterial communities associated with T. gratilla, using a 16S rDNA gene metagenomics approach, to provide insight into the bacterial agents associated with this aquaculture species, as well as with this balding disease. Bacterial samples were collected from non-lesioned healthy animals obtained from natural locations along the eastern coast of South Africa, as well as from different cultured cohorts: non-lesioned healthy-, lesioned diseased- and non-lesioned stressed animals. A total of 1,067,515 individual bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified, belonging to 133 family-, 123 genus- and 113 species level OTU groups. Alpha diversity analyses, based on Chao1, Shannon and Simpson indices, showed that there were no statistically significant differences (ANOVA; P > 0.05) between the respective cohorts, as all cohorts displayed a high degree of bacterial diversity. Similarly, beta diversity analyses (Non-metric multidimensional scaling) showed a large degree of overlapping OTUs across the four cohorts. Within each cohort, various OTUs commonly associated with marine environments were found, predominantly belonging to the families Vibrionaceae, Saprospiraceae, Flavobacteriaceae and Sphingomonadaceae. Differential abundance analysis (DESeq2) revealed that OTUs that are differentially abundant across cohorts were likely not responsible for this balding disease, suggesting that complex bacterial agents, rather than a specific pathogenic agent, are likely causing this disease. Furthermore, the putative metabolic functions assigned to the bacterial communities showed that heterotrophic bacteria appear to be responsible for tissue lysis of degrading animal matter. The results from this study, obtained through univariate and multivariate-based approaches, contributes to future management strategies of this emerging aquaculture species by providing insight into the bacterial communities associated with both natural and cultured environments.

OBJECTIVES: Studies on the impact of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) during endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) of lymph nodes are retrospective and have shown conflicting results. We aimed to compare the diagnostic yield of EUS-FNA of lymph nodes with ROSE (ROSE+) and without ROSE (ROSE-). METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized controlled trial. Consecutive patients who were scheduled to undergo EUS-FNA of mediastinal or abdominal lymph nodes were randomized to ROSE+ or ROSE-. In the ROSE+ group, the number of passes was dictated by the on-site cytotechnician. In the ROSE- group, five passes were performed without interference from the cytotechnician. All samples were reviewed by a single-expert cytopathologist, blinded to group allocation. Primary endpoint was diagnostic yield with and without ROSE. RESULTS: After inclusion of 90 patients, interim analysis showed futility of study continuation since diagnostic yield of ROSE+ and ROSE- were comparable. A total of 91 patients were randomized to ROSE+ (N = 45) or ROSE- (N = 46). Diagnostic yield of ROSE+ and ROSE- and diagnostic accuracy were comparable: 93.3% vs. 95.7% (P = 0.68) and 97.6% vs. 93.2% (P = 0.62), respectively. Two major complications (one per group) occurred (p = 0.99). ROSE- patients more often reported self-limiting post-procedural pain (p < 0.001). Median procedure time for ROSE+ (20 min) and ROSE- (23 min) was comparable (P = 0.06). Median time to review slides in the ROSE- group (12:47 min) was longer than with ROSE+ (7:52 min) (P < 0.001). Mean costs of ROSE- and ROSE+ were comparable: €938.29 (±172.70) vs. €945.98 (±223.38) (P = 0.91), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Diagnostic yield and accuracy of EUS-FNA of mediastinal and abdominal lymph nodes with and without ROSE are comparable. Time needed to review slides was shorter and post-procedural pain was less often reported in the ROSE+ group. Based on the primary outcome, the implementation of ROSE during EUS-FNA of mediastinal and abdominal lymph nodes cannot be advised. (Dutch Trial Register: NTR4876).

CD34+ cell selection significantly improves GvHD-free survival in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). However, specific information regarding long-term prognosis and risk factors for late mortality after CD34+ cell-selected allo-HSCT is lacking. We conducted a single-center landmark analysis in 276 patients alive without relapse 1 year after CD34+ cell-selected allo-HSCT for AML (n=164), ALL (n=33) or myelodysplastic syndrome (n=79). At 5 years' follow-up after the 1-year landmark (range 0.03-13 years), estimated relapse-free survival (RFS) was 73% and overall survival (OS) 76%. The 5-year cumulative incidence of relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) were 11% and 16%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Comorbidity Index score⩾3 correlated with marginally worse RFS (hazard ratio (HR) 1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.97-3.28, P=0.06) and significantly worse OS (HR 2.53, 95% CI 1.26-5.08, P=0.004). Despite only 24% of patients with acute GvHD within 1 year, this also significantly correlated with worse RFS and OS, with increasing grades of acute GvHD associating with increasingly poorer survival on multivariate analysis (P<0.0001). Of 63 deaths after the landmark, GvHD accounted for 27% of deaths and was the most common cause of late mortality, followed by relapse and infection. Although prognosis is excellent for patients alive without relapse 1 year after CD34+ cell-selected allo-HSCT, risks of late relapse and NRM persist, particularly due to GvHD.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring injuries are the most common muscle injury in amateur and professional soccer. Most hamstring injuries occur in the late swing phase, when the hamstring undergoes a stretch-shortening cycle and the hamstring does a significant amount of eccentric work. The incidence of these injuries has not decreased despite there being effective injury prevention programmes focusing on improving eccentric hamstring strength. As this might be because of poor compliance, a more functional injury prevention exercise programme that focuses on the stretch-shortening cycle might facilitate compliance. In this study, a bounding exercise programme consisting of functional plyometric exercises is being evaluated. METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT). Male amateur soccer teams (players aged 18-45 years) have been randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. Both groups are continuing regular soccer training and the intervention group is additionally performing a 12-week bounding exercise programme (BEP), consisting of a gradual build up and maintenance programme for the entire soccer season. The primary outcome is hamstring injury incidence. Secondary outcome is compliance with the BEP during the soccer season and 3 months thereafter. DISCUSSION: Despite effective hamstring injury prevention programmes, the incidence of these injuries remains high in soccer. As poor compliance with these programmes may be an issue, a new plyometric exercise programme may encourage long-term compliance and is expected to enhance sprinting and jumping performance besides preventing hamstring injuries.
