BACKGROUND: Individuals with an increased body mass index (BMI) (≥ 30 kg/m2) experience higher rates of perinatal mental health disorders than individuals with BMI < 30. Personal experience of decreased control over labor has been associated with the development postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. However, no studies have investigated the association between BMI and experience of control over labor. This study aimed to assess perceived control over labor and compare patients with BMI ≥ 30 to those with BMI < 30. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study of postpartum patients who delivered at term (37-41 weeks gestation). Postpartum, participants completed the Labour Agentry Scale (LAS), a validated tool to assess perceived control over labor/birth. Demographic, maternal health history and obstetric/neonatal outcomes were abstracted from the patient chart. Bivariate analyses were performed between those with BMI < 30 and those with BMI ≥ 30 using Fisher's exact test. Continuous LAS scores were compared between patients with BMI < 30 and BMI ≥ 30 using Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Higher LAS scores indicate higher perceived control over labor. Multivariable linear regression was then performed to account for confounding factors identified a priori. RESULTS: There was no difference in LAS between those with BMI ≥ 30 and BMI < 30. When stratified by World Health Organization (WHO) class of BMI, those with BMI ≥ 40 had a significantly lower LAS scores than those with BMI < 30 (147 vs. 163, p = 0.02), however, this finding was no longer significant after controlling for length of labor and cesarean birth. CONCLUSION: Only participants with the highest BMI experienced decreased control over labor, and this finding was no longer significant after controlling for mode of delivery and length of labor. Further research into the experience of birthing people with BMI ≥ 30 is critical to understand the increased risk of perinatal mood disorders among this population.

The dairy industry uses enzymes to make cheese, alter product flavor, and eliminate lactose. The activities of these enzymes have been measured in clear buffered solutions, but because of the limitations of spectrophotometric methods, enzyme activities have not been measured in opaque or colored dairy products where they are used. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can be used to determine reaction kinetics in opaque and colored solutions by measuring the heat rate (thermal power) from enzyme-catalyzed reactions as a function of time. This study used ITC to measure ß-galactosidase activity in opaque solutions of milk, sweet whey, sweet whey permeate, acid whey, and acid whey permeate with 2 ß-galactosidase (Enzyme Commission number 3.2.1.23) isozymes derived from Aspergillus oryzae and Kluyveromyces lactis. The components of the dairy fluids alter the enzyme kinetics and reaction thermodynamics, and the reactions catalyzed by the 2 homologues differ as shown by differing thermodynamic profiles. The study demonstrates that ITC can be used to measure enzyme activity in opaque and colored dairy fluids and identify reactions by their thermodynamic properties.

There is limited data on how weight stigma impacts patient's experience of obstetric care. This study aims to assess perceived control over the birth process and compare patients with BMI ≥ 30 to those with BMI < 30. This article covers historical and recent efforts to catalyse the dehydrocoupling of amines and silanes, a direct method for Si-N bond formation that offers hydrogen as a byproduct. In some applications, this transformation can be used as a sustainable replacement for traditional aminosilane synthesis, which demands corrosive chlorosilanes while generating one equivalent of ammonium salt waste for each Si-N bond that is formed. These advantages have driven the development of Si-N dehydrocoupling catalysts that span the periodic table, affording mechanistic insight that has led to advances in efficiency and selectivity. Given the divergence in precursors being used, characterization methods being relied on, and applications being targeted, this article highlights the formation of monomeric aminosilanes separately from oligomeric and polymeric aminosilanes. A recent study that allowed for the manganese catalysed synthesis of perhydropolysilazane and commercial chemical vapor deposition precursors is featured, and key opportunities for advancing the field of Si-N dehydrocoupling catalysis are discussed.

In the United States, prostate cancer (CaP) remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men. CaP is predominantly indolent at diagnosis, with a small fraction (25-30%) representing an aggressive subtype (Gleason score 7-10) that is prone to metastatic progression. This fact, coupled with the criticism surrounding the role of prostate specific antigen in prostate cancer screening, demonstrates the current need for a biomarker(s) that can identify clinically significant CaP and avoid unnecessary biopsy procedures and psychological implications of being diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer. Although several diagnostic biomarkers are available to clinicians, very few comparative trials have been performed to assess the clinical effectiveness of these biomarkers. It is of note, however, that a majority of these clinical trials have been over-represented by men of Caucasian origin, despite the fact that African American men have a 1.7 times higher incidence and 2.1 times higher rate of mortality from prostate cancer. Biomarkers for CaP diagnosis based on the tissue of origin include urine-based gene expression assays (PCA3, Select MDx, ExoDx Prostate IntelliScore, Mi-Prostate Score, PCA3-PCGEM1 gene panel), blood-based protein biomarkers (4K, PHI), and tissue-based DNA biomarker (Confirm MDx). Another potential direction that has emerged to aid in the CaP diagnosis include multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and bi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (bpMRI), which in conjunction with clinically validated biomarkers may provide a better approach to predict clinically significant CaP at diagnosis. In this review, we discuss some of the adjunctive biomarker tests along with newer imaging modalities that are currently available to help clinicians decide which patients are at risk of having high-grade CaP on prostate biopsy with the emphasis on clinical utility of the tests across African American (AA) and Caucasian (CA) men.

Human rabies remains a globally significant public health problem. Replacement of polyclonal anti-rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), a passive component of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), with a monoclonal antibody (MAb), would eliminate the cost and availability constraints associated with RIG. Our team has developed and licensed a human monoclonal antibody RAB1 (Rabishield©), as the replacement for RIG where canine rabies is enzootic. However, for the highly diverse rabies viruses of North America, a cocktail containing two or more MAbs targeting different antigenic sites of the rabies glycoprotein should be included to ensure neutralization of all variants of the virus. In this study, two MAb cocktails, R172 (RAB1-RAB2) and R173 (RAB1-CR57), were identified and evaluated against a broad range of rabies variants from North America. R173 was found to be the most potent cocktail, as it neutralized all the tested North American RABV isolates and demonstrated broad coverage of isolates from both terrestrial and bat species. R173 could be a promising candidate as an alternative or replacement for RIG PEP in North America.
